PS: I am really curious about the upcoming GasGas 400 Adventure. That might finally tick all the boxes for a lightweight adventure bike. CCM tried, but the one I had... Well, that's another story.
2:35 - I'm not buying any used bikes from Steve. I'm glad Steve's rib has healed. Busted ribs are usually a pain for six weeks. I fell off my G310GS mid April and my rib still hurts when I lie down or get out of bed, and more problematic, my left thumb hurts and has only half its previous range of motion. In my early 60s, I don't think that's going to get much better. :-( An inexpensive Amazon knock off air mesh seat pad greatly improved the comfort of my G310GS seat. I'm hoping the tall seat from Seat Concepts will fix some of my problems with the deep seat cutout on the G310GS, as well as improve the fit of the bike for my 6'2" frame. I'm currently a bit cramped. Coming from dual sport bikes, I long for a plank seat that allows me to move back and forth for better control and long range comfort, although I can do 400 mile back road days with reasonable comfort, although I stand a bit to stretch while riding and I take a nice break for lunch. In the comparison with the BMW G310GS, you forgot to mention that the 390 Adventure is orange. That convinced me to buy the Cosmic Black baby GS instead. Actually, my local KTM dealer only carries their off road dirt bikes, probably because of some weasel marketing arrangement with Suzuki or Yamaha which they also sell, so that put me off the 390. I was also a bit concerned with KTM reliability. After two years, I haven't needed the 3 year BMW factory warranty and I do all of my own maintenance. I love small thumper ADV bikes. I wish the manufacturers would offer up-spec models for 20% more money that had 5 gallon fuel tanks, proper aluminum bash plates, engine crash bars, good ground clearance, upgraded suspension, tubeless spoke wheels, etc. Motorcycle manufacturers seem to believe REAL adventure bikes start at 700cc, and the small ADV bikes are low cost beginner bikes or bikes for the Asian market. They don't realize that some of us have always preferred lighter bikes off road and some of us are getting older and now need lighter bikes off road... and the geezers have a pile of disposable income and would like something a bit upscale. Thanks for these very enjoyable videos.
Cheers for this, that’s the main reason Steve got the KTM, that seat on the GS isn’t great. Light thumpers are so much fun, bring back the Dominator, DR350 and Yam TY 175 :D
@@Motoeuro - I had a 1997 DR350 that I used as an urban assault vehicle. I'd ride it down a flight of outside concrete steps. I'd speed up for speed bumps. 55 MPH speed bumps in the parking lot at work were so fun. Duh-dut. Could barely feel them. The last time my wife rode with me was 1998 when I rode 50 yards down a 45 degree grass hill to take a short cut to the movie theater after she warned me not to ride on the sidewalk (which I did to get to the hill). :-)
It’s a wonderful little bike with plenty of power for those interested more about the meandering trail rather than how fast can you get to the end of it 🍻🍻 Very entertaining 😁
My brain would choose the Honda for its rock solid reliability and good finish quality. My only issue with it is that standard it weighs about 60lbs more all while having the same power. The one that looks great and would bring me peace of mind, but the KTM seems more fun. I’ve only owned at 390A and not a CB500X, so my opinion maybe flawed.
@@I_Santos_i have been temped to swap my cb500x for a ktm 390 adv. Tested one at the ABR fest and it felt much better ergonomically and was much lighter.
Great vid, as usual. I think the 390 got some unwarranted bad press on release. I had a go, it’s a good fit for UK green lanes that’s for sure. By the way I recently did the TET around Devon and covered the tricky parts across 2 videos. If u want a look. Great fun!
Great video. I think I'm going to go test ride a 390... not sure if i could part with my Thruxton though, but want to be able to explore a few off the beaten track places!
Great as always. Thanks! Ps. I've seen one vid about ktm390 in offroad and its traction control doesn't work well in offroad conditions. You should turn it off, probably this was causing shuting down in the 1st mud pit. The vid was from offroad-offcorse
Very good question - In short, the 250 has never let me down, its more capable than you might think. The CRF 300 is a little lighter and a litter more powerful, but for me, the 250 never stops surprising me :D If it 'aint broke......390 ADV is so much fun, but I love my little Rally - Cheers!
Nice video. I have a 2021 KTM 390 Adventure and love it. Done a little light off road and very good. Will fit some upgrades over time. Ohh the BMW sorry just not my cup of tea lol.
Serious challenger to the Suzuki DR-Z400? I've a Husaberg FE390, more than enough, it keeps trying to kill me, though it'll pull you up or though stuff that other bikes won't due to it's engine configuration! I might do a swap, needing something lower!
Thanks again for some great entertainment! Love the easy watching style and also that Steve appears to be the "fall guy" again!! Keep them coming gents!! ......... Still waiting for you to sell some sticker.......
Like every chuffed Steve's ribs have healed, sorry to have missed you lot at the ABR Festival...couple of unicorn bikes that might appear in the future...new honda dommy and a honda CL ...we will see I had a go on the KTM 690 and the crf 300 rally at the ABR show really struggled to stand up on the rally...just did not feel comfortable which so surprised me, but the KTM was lovely if lacking in any form of weather pretection....still no closer for next years bike but that just gives me more time on the africa twin....Belgium TET is so much easier! Anyway thanks again for the video really enjoying them...
There’s probably physics in there somewhere, not our strong point, but having a laugh with your mates on bikes is brilliant, clearly, we’ve no idea what we’re doing!
Thank you heaps for another entertaining vlog. As id mentioned before, I was tempted to get one but after the test ride, I have reservations about it being able to do the enduro trails we get here in Queensland. Out of interest, I would have gone your route and got a Honda CRF 300 than the KTM. Does it compare with your bike off road ?.
Cheers Kev, the KTM shines on the road and does a good job on the trails, the CRF is probably better on the trails with it's 21" front, but a real pain on roads! You just cant win!
Fab as always gentlemen and good to hear Steve is mended…well, prior to the mud pit of doom of course. Never trust a cameraman looking for a shot is my motto…Oh wait….

By your looking very classy there. Another excelent entertaining and of course educational video. Hope to see another one soon. The cat has gone back to her owner so I can have late nights, no more earlies to let her out.
Unfortunately, regarding Ground clearance, it is all about priorities in life. A decent seat height for the common mortals with a good rider triangle and the seating position is the price for that, But a least a beefy aluminum skid plate will do the trick to safeguard the engine sump and other parts of the engine, after all with that weight it not that you are going to ride it like a full enduro machine. If you want good ground clearance but with a nice narrow low seat there are motorcycle like Beta alp 200 but then the distance from the footpegs to the seat is very low so you end up riding with the knees a bit higher which result in a cramped like riding position.
What would you consider "mandatory" upgrades for a 250 pound rider with gear, riding mostly street but often off of pavement (nothing crazy though lol)? I'm gonna start say start with Risers and/or a new Bar, Wider/lower Foot Pegs (anyone found an economical yet good set?), but what about Suspension? Way too soft at that weight? Anyone have an Economical yet worthy front and rear suspension recommendation? Anything else to consider while deciding to purchase a 2022 or not?
Good fun fellas, thats what its all about. And yeah lose that stupid splash guard before your go through a deep puddle at speed, it will act like an anchor and and rip the wheel back on the spindle. awesome bikes once youve got the adv mods and even with the low ground clearance if you pick your lines carefully you can ride some pretty knarly trails without issues. I find rider skill reaches its limit long before the bike does...😀 greetings from NZ
I dunno guys....I worship thé ground you walk on but for the kind of biking you guys do....trading in a rally raid gs for a ground huggin KTM....even with a "jungle munchin bash plate" as Steve put it....that crf is probably the best for it.
I am really happy to see a heavy boy on the 390 getting stocked in the deep water and mud.
Put the hyperpro fork springs in. Will lift the front nearly 2 inches ride height and give about 40mm more ground clearance.
PS: I am really curious about the upcoming GasGas 400 Adventure. That might finally tick all the boxes for a lightweight adventure bike. CCM tried, but the one I had... Well, that's another story.
I hear ya, the GG looks good, as long as it doesn't need a rebuild every 50 hrs...
Recently Bajaj India given a statement that next year GasGas ktm's are coming. :)
CCMs still get advertised for stupid money...I've a brace of 644's
Do you think the KTM 390 would work for a rider 6’1” 230 lbs???
I got stuck in the same spot a few weeks ago. Luckily a nice man on a bicycle was passing to help!
Yeah, its horrible that stuff! Easy to get stuck, but still fun :D Cheers!
Great video. Where did you shoot it at? At first I thought it might be Hamsterley?

No insult to Steve, but I am asking myself if his body weight pushes the bike down in the mud or helps gaining friction? ;-)
