I've heard the stand under lights called a "plinth". That's what they call the stands under statues. Great video. I love your progress. Anyone who can modify or repair top irons is probably good at chess too. Both take a lot of thought.

You'll find that most if not all pre-war and early post-war bumpers are made of high carbon spring steel. This was so that the didn't dent or bend when bumpers met. You're right to heat it, but next time getting a Harbor Freight fiberglass welding blanket to wrap it in while it cools down. Really helps to control heat. Fiberglass insulation also works.

Dang, those chopped stanchions are almost as impressive as that Sam Elliott style 'stache. NICE-NICE! Cool info on the high carbon steel bumper,

The rear bumper from the speed shop is for sedan delivery only.(rare & hard to find). A woody uses the standard 35-36 bumper with the dip in the center.

    • @RACGARAGE
      @RACGARAGE  ปีที่แล้ว

ah ok yes i knew it was rare, i had to pick it up

Saw the same happen: Our heat treater seasoned a broken 420 stainless steel plastic mold component much like a 6 inch C clamp frame over the flame from his oven. Clamping the Vee cracked segment in place he welded the repair. A perfect stack of dimesl
As it cooled a crack developed from the weld start following to the finish.
He used stainless filler but the thin web broke away from the thicker frame.
I had my fingers crossed on your weld.
    The taillights look factory!

You have a good lad working for you there.. When I had my classic car restoration business here in the UK, I often had school leavers work for me.. I could tell half way through the first day if they were going to cut the mustard... Not many did.. I'm about to retire and emigrate to Spain and take my 1941 Cadillac Coupe Custom with me so I can finish it off..
Great update.. Love your attention to detail.. That's what its about.

ps. The A truck with the fenders is the only way to go...not easy to find I'm sure... All the rest without just look like cobbled together Rat Rods. and there's more than enough of THOSE to go around - the full fenders make it a much nicer finished Shop Truck...looks Cool !

  • @midgetrace

Because bumpers and bumper brackets are made of spring steel ,it is better to bend and reshape the pieces and cut off the excess . Welding is seldom completely successful. when finished they still tend to brake '

Beautiful work on the '36..assume it's a customer's car. Think I would've opted for a bit less severe chop on the windshield - but hey- that's just one guy's opinion

Me thinks you need one of those "heat wrap blankets", they are handy to have around when you to slow the cooling of a weld no matter what the material. The "36" is looking sweet. 👍 ✌
PS Get in touch with Matt or Mike at Iron Trap Garage they have a pot load of Ford stuff.

Little man's funny, best time when there Little. Trav mount hinges on deck lid first, put paint sticks 4 gaps then u have perfect bracket spot. Good luck
