Yay Lexi! Love the video quality! My Monster of the Week group recently did an arc set in Norway where they interacted with trolls, dwarves, nekker, ulfhednar and the like. Nordic lore is rich. This game Vaesen sounds very cool; never heard of it. The combat mechanics sound interesting.
Excellent review. I’ve been trawling yt for reviews and this is by far my favorite. I love how you focused on what makes Vaesen unique without burying the overview in mechanics!
Vaesen is a beautifully produced game with an interesting premise. I had the players play through the incident which granted them the sight, and the discovery of the society. Oh, and let's give thanks for the return of the lost art of including an INDEX!
Free League use of the 'Year Zero Engine' is great. The Mythic Britain and Ireland supplement is outstanding and the Adventures in 'A wicked Secret and Other mysteries' expands out the world in perfect ways. Been running with this game for a while and I have only good things to say about it. Thank you for the highlight and review.
Hey, I've recently found Vaesen and have found it perfectky fits the themes and adventure beats that I love the most, so I'm checking out some reviews. I am an Australian who didn't know about your channel, so this was a bonus surprise for me, and you get 1 new subscriber =)
Great explanations, you express your ideas and thoughts clearly, genuine and inviting presentation. I'm all in and I'm excited to check out Vaesen, as I've just ordered the core book.
Excellent! I have heard of Vassen before and always wanted to give it a try. I can never have enough horror games. I also appreciate that it gives tips on how to play in a way that will lead to the most fun in the game. Kind of a set of expectations on how to get the most out of the genre, which I think is important with horror games.
I’m really sold on this one, I love gothic horror and I’ve always wanted to try a dice pool system, I just like the sound of rolling all those dice. B-Roll looks great too
Quite a nice review; thank you! I very much agree with you on the quality of FLP books. Vaesen, One Ring, and Tales from the Loop are so satisfying to hold and page through. Since I use another RPG system, I bought these books for reference, and I would have usually just gotten them as PDFs. However, paper quality, layout, and art are excellent, and this series of books is worth having for those things alone. (I wish FLP's Blade Runner production was nearly as good; I sold my hard copy and kept the PDF since the PDF is easier to look at and use. The paper of the hard copy is too glossy and small white print on black background was not a good design choice for readability.)
It's a well put together game, and aesthetically it's amazing. Since folklore and horror are both my jam, this game is a slam-dunk. As for future expansions, really the world is covered fascinating locations in that time, and phenomenal folk-lore. Eastern Europe would be an obvious choice, but any part of the world would do: the Mediterranean region or African continent, the Middle East, China, Japan, Southeast Asia, South America, even the Western US, or Canada. All of them have fascinating lore just below the surface.
There is a thing that has been bugging me for some time... Why does every youtuber pronounced Vaesen as V[ɑː]sen (with sound of part) and not as V[æ]sen (with sound of pat)? I mean, the original ae hints at [æ] sound... Also, Swedish has [ɛ:] (can be heard in the Wiktionary).
I wish people who have never played a game would stop calling these sorts of videos “reviews,” and call them something more akin to “initial impressions.” How can you recite a game you’ve never played? I do appreciate the content; it’s just mislabeled.
@@jrodpaul thank you for your thoughts. I see my reviews as reviews of the books/manuals. I'm trying to communicate how easy I think it would be to play games after just reading the rules.
@@TheGamingTable Understandable, and as mentioned, I appreciate the content. The title says, Vaesen Roleplaying Game Review. A more accurate title would be, Vaesen Core Rulebook Review. Keep up the good work.

Vaesen = Væsen = Being or Beast.

My goodness an index can really sway me on a game, especially larger books.

Thanks for the super useful review! I'm happily awaiting the arrival of my Vaesen book:)
Oh and as for the art, there's also a lot of influence from Kay Nielsen, John Bauer, and Theodor Kittelsen.
This is one that's been on my radar for a hot second, and I've got a GM that would absolutely love this one.
I often have my eye caught by games I know my friends will want to play. it's a good way to get them on the table.

Here is a link to the first episode of the latest mini series we did. :)
I'm currently playing in a campaign of Vaesen, it's really quite good!

I recently got into free league. First started with Dragonbane and now looking to get into vasen and this video helped
I'm really glad. I've been thinking about purchasing dragon bane, it just looks so tempting
Free League has been making some gorgeous and thematic games. I'm excited to see their Blade Runner RPG.
They're making a lot of great stuff, I want it all!

I for one can't wait to bring my terrible Swedish accent to the table.
*Swedish chef noises*
Your amazing at explaining a rpg play book. Good job. Cat daddy approved 😁
Thank you. I hope that I can help people access and learn more about games they might be interested in.

Oh… this is a bit like the Grimm TV show!
Oh, you're right, you could do some really interesting things with this game!
Awesome video! Would you like to review my games as well? TTRPGs and a 1v1 miniatures game already published :)
