    I compiled a list of all swedish vassen/väsen names. I wrote the anme in swedish (put a short description of the illustration in parenthesis) and then a direct translation to provide a feeling of what the words communicate. have I written no translation, the directtranslation is the englis name (such as troll and giant).
    Askefroa (green elf-looking-thing in tree), - Ash lady (ash as the tree)
    Bäckahäst (the horse on an isle), - stream horse
    Gast (ghoul-looking fellow), - Ghost
    Gengångare (the ghost looking one), - walks again
    Havsfru (mermaid), - sea lady
    Jätte (Giant), - Giant
    Kyrkogrim(the black cat), Church grim
    Lindorm (the dragon-snake), -
    Lyktgubbe (the creepy gnome with a lantern), old Lantern man
    Mara (the nightmare hag/harpy lady), - Mare
    Myling (the dead child), - not translatable
    Nattramn (raven), - Night raven
    Näcken (the fiddler in the river), - Nude
    Sjöorm (sea-monster), Sea serpent
    Skogsrå (the forest lady with deer-legs), - forest adviser
    Spiritus (the bug thing),
    Tomte (the tiny fella with a big axe), tomte is the same word as Santa Claus
    Troll,
    Varulv (werewolf),
    Vätte (the cute one with a frog),
    Älva (Fairy),

Great choice of music to fit the mood of the game and the visuals. Love the look and feel of the game. Might just give this to myself for my birthday, despite the quite hefty price tag. 7:05 - Even Magnus pronouncing Bäcklund wrong 😂
    I assume they spellt the name as Backlund when they sent Magnus the message.
    For non-Swedish speakers:
    • _Bäcklund_ = Brook-Grove
    • _Backlund_ = Slope-Grove
    They used the first letter of the alphabet (a) instead of the 28th letter (ä).
    Pronounciaton of Bäcklund is closer to "Becklund" than "Backlund

    Vaesen is my next purchase from Free League, who have rapidly become my favorite RPG publisher. My group and I greatly enjoyed Forbidden Lands, Mutant Year Zero and Coriolis - although all of these are more conducive to smaller groups (3 was the ideal number for Forbidden Lands and MYZ for us) and shorter campaigns (8-12 sessions). My players aren't very much into Alien, which also uses MYZ system, so Vaesen is the next one on the list!

    I wonder if they will release a source book set in Portland, Oregon in the 2010's? I loved the Grimm TV series. Also, I guess that this could form the basis of a more general horror investigation game, or for a wider range of Gothic Romance games.

    Dane here! This looks super interesting! And the pop-up was the right choice. If you speak English natively, the æ sound is almost impossible to get right. Væsen means "Creature", and yes, refers to supernatural beings. But another meaning is "department", leading to a pun l heard once: "What kind of creature are you? Oh, a fire department!"

    • @battlemaster4208
      @battlemaster4208 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Subbed! In MY sorting eyes Nisser is separate from Gnomes, Halflings, Dwarfs. Redcaps from D&D is basically evil nisser! Nisser is Imo a bit smaller than even gnomes or halflings, live in different environments ( mountains/ farms.grasslands/ woods.forests/ coasts). They help out and are really nice IF you treat them, your closests and any fellow animal well. Tusser is Goblins, translated. Vetter is an umbrella term for any supernatural being, be it etheral or of flesh and bone.
    I agree as a norwegian I would love to see our swedish Frie Ligan solidify swedish names for beings and such too instead of englishfy/americanize such a wealth of nordic culture, have a spine darnit. Non scandinavians could at least pay the respect of learning our languages, norse, pre-christian traditions and we too should do a better job showcasing say language and translations or worst case, as a whole die totally out..

    I am really looking forward to running a game of Vaesen for my regular D&D group, and this video has been a great help with wrapping my head around it that bit more. So thank you for that.
    The only thing I'm planning to do differently is to set the game in 19th century Ireland instead, as we have some nice twists of our own on a lot of these mythological and faerie creatures that appear in the book. While I would appreciate the Swedish names being included, I'll likely end up using the Irish and Celtic versions where I can for my own game.

  • @hightde13
    @hightde13 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think the base Y0 engine is pretty solid but my experience so far has been a slight limit on how long one game can last. Unlike a lot of other systems what you have to spend xp on tends to be a bit limited which does curtail lengthy game play which my group tends to lean toward. However if you are doing one shots or want something to do for a few months vs a year or more, they have all treated my group quite well.

    I love GM screens. The "privacy" is so-so. In some games it's nice for keeping your notes behind so that players don't accidentally get a glimpse of something that gives the mystery away. But _mostly_ I like them for the easy reference. I've even made my own custom GM screen for games that don't have them -- it's how I played Scum And Villainy, a Forged in the Dark game that was the first I ran or that my players played, so that anything I might need was probably already there for me to see. Makes things go a lot smoother and swifter.
    Also, _sometimes_ there are rolls I want to keep secret (that is, if the system I'm running even has GM rolls). Typically these are informational like perception or reading people or similar things where the player knowing they failed or succeeded would give away the truth. I trust my players not to metagame those moments, but it's more genuine if they actually don't know.
    ========================================
    I really need to do a Vaesen game... I've gotta finish up my current game (maybe 5 to 6 more sessions?), then later I'll run a Fate game I promised to do over a year ago -- the Secrets of Cats. And then... well, it's a long list of stuff. Vaesen is competing with Heart: The City Beneath, Dragon Bane [or] Forbidden Lands, RuneQuest Glorantha, 7th Sea, Wildsea, Mausritter, Brinkwood: The Blood of Tyrants, Symbroum, Cyberpunk Red [OR] The Veil, Coriolis, and Blades in the Dark [OR] Band of Blades.
    It's a lot. I wish I could retire right now and just have 2 or maybe 3 game nights a week.

      It’s just a tabletop role playing game. It’s primarily just a book with extra stuff like themed dice and maybe a map. It’s not a board game. Free League sells everything for this RPG at any rate.

      Yeah. Its not like Dragonbane, Forbidden Lands or Symborium which come in a chunky box set. Wish it were though

      @@DaveThaumavore yeah I ended up buying it, love it but the way it's advertised makes it look like it's coming in a standard campaign board box

    they call disabilities “defects” and then the use game mechanics to enact social stigma and prejudice for having those disabilities. You could argue they are trying to capture how the Victorian era is, but as someone with disabilities all I see is yet another rpg that that’s shitty with its tropes and unwelcoming. This was a great review though. Vaesen angers me because I wanted to like it. doubt I’ll buy any more free league after this
