I had never seen Zak Wyldes play, that I remember. And he was at Les Paul's club playing Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) on an ACOUSTIC! With like an 8 minute solo. Instant fan.
I know it's just my opinion but, I think the solo from "Diary of a Madman" was the most intense solo out of everything that Randy ever recorded. There is just something about the tonality of that solo that gets me every time.
Great video and I love your enthusiasm about that prolific live album. Also in the Tribute album, Randy's solos in Paranoid and Children of the Grave are like portals to another existence.
Indeed they are... I remember the first time I heard his live version of paranoid oh, I'm pretty sure that was my first introduction with Randy Rhoads playing live because the song was on a greatest hits album that I owned before I owned the tribute. And children of the Grave... I wish that solo would have never stopped LOL.

his tone was amazing, no one has ever sounded like him. People confuse not liking a tone for not be an amazing tone, He got exactly what he wanted, Max Norman raves about Randy being able to get the exact sound he wanted by doing little things.

Your point re solo's and and the "song within is song" is a term I first heard when someone was talking about the iconic solo in Hotel California. Great way to describe it. I also love how you mentioned solos you can actually hum and sing - unlike say, Yngwie. It's actually helped me not get too self conscious about playing within my abilities and not at a math rock level. I basically construct solos from my head, which I can 'sing' as I' never learned theory so I have to use the search & destroy method finding what I should play lol
Thank you very much, awesome video! My discovery of Rhodes is much like yours, I received a box of CDs from a friend and the tribute album was one of them. I grew up hearing a lot of 80s metal so I did not understand what it was about Randy's playing that made it different at first... Until I realized the fusion of classical Theory in his playing but the amount of feeling and energy put into it when he played live. To this day I still study his playing and the relationship of classical music in rock and Metal. I will also go out and say it as much as I hate to admit it, I love evh... but Randy Rhoads Spotlight solo in Suicide Solution beats the dirt out of eruption in terms of technicality, Melody and feeling... Like you said, his solos are like songs within a song.

Premier Hearing eruption when I was young never really did anything for me or made me want to play guitar but his playing in general was influential in a way though( my father bought me a hot for teacher single for me when I was five because I loved the music video)... But the first time I heard Randy's solo on the tribute album I was completely blown away because other people like Eddie did not have that classical influence or Melodic value. Because Randy was so well-versed in music theory, I could tell right away even at the age of 15 that when I first heard him play, if he was still alive today... I am certain that he would have did far greater things in music than Eddie. I believe the biggest difference between Eddie and Randy was that Eddie always seemed more content with his playing while Randy always seemed to strive to be better and learn more. My father seen Van Halen in 1981 and was the only concert he ever walked out on because of the sound was terrible.

If you search youtube for his last few live recordings of the solo he does some stuff that just completely blows me away everytime I come across it. It's better than the solo on tribute. In fact Imma go listen to it right now
Randy is one of my favourites too. I set out to learn all his stuff at one stage. I also like Jake and Zakk, plus that live album with Brad Gillis. One I forget about is Gary Moore before he went on the blues things. His solos like in Out In The Fields were amazing. What I have always aimed for but never quite got is to have the soloing sound composed and lyrical, but do it unplanned when improvising off the cuff. My fav improv player is still Jimmy Page. That guy was unbelievable. They could jam songs out and come up with al these interesting things on the night live on stage. Every night was different and now lots of the gigs are online. Blackmore is another fav. Really unique. Yngwie too of course. I am 51 now and still trying in vain to get his licks up to speed and have the same feel etc. He is incredible. I could not believe what I was hearing when i heard it first time (I wonder if people who say he has no feel also do not relate to the feel in classical music. Can't hit the notes he hits unless you are feeling them)

Regarding the Marshall 1960 cabinets. They started using Celestion G12T-75s around '85 or '86 so Randys cabinets would propably have originally had G12-65 speakers, if he bought them new for the Ozzy gig. If they were older from his Quiet Riot days they were most likely some variation of the Greenback.
It's also obvious that marshall and celestion are allowed to reinvent randy's equipment. The RR family authorized it. Those old speakers no longer matter.
Have you guys heard the final Rhoads solo recorded the day before he died? its very much the same from suicide solution from Tribute but he uses some really wide delays in the Melodic part then then it breaks into this track that I've never heard before. I remember many years ago when I first bought the Blizzard of Ozz album right after it was released here, my mind was completely blown, and it had everything to do with Randy's guitar work. I am curious, why did you choose to use the Freidman pedal instead of that very nice JCM 800 for the base overdriven tone? Also, do you use the Boss chorus pedal only for the clean sounds? Thanks! Euge did you hear the bonus live tracks from the reissue of the Blizzard of Oz album. Some amazing earlier live stuff . maybe even better than the versions on tribute
Have you ever heard the original untouched version of Blizzard of Oz? The tone is way better. I'm getting his live tone from Tribute through. Jackson RR5 Seymour Duncan JB Pickups > Maxon 808 OD > EVH Wah (Overdrive into the Wah for that loud pickup switching mute trick) > Boss Compressor Sustain > Donner Fall Delay > JCM 2000 TSL 100 Lead channel. Caline 10 Band EQ in FX loop > Boss Chorus Ensemble. JCM settings, Eq's all at 12 o'clock. Gain about 3-4 o'clock. Volume above 8 o'clock. I use the built in reverb. 10 band EQ I would say is the key. mids boosted, lows dropped and a little highs. and a 1960 4x12 of course. I'd be happy to send you a picture of my setup if it helps your research purposes! haha

IMO Jake E Lee is Ozzy's best guitar player BUT Randy is the most revolutionary because he was different from all the others, he was doing his own thing, he was unique...In the 80s everyone was jumping on Eddie's hype train, the hair style, the guitars, the phrasing...Randy on the other hand was completely different, he was like a classical guitarist on steroids.. he was not like Malmsteen playing one million notes per second, just shredding.... he used his classical knowledge on riffing, chords, melodies and writing beautiful solos as well.. His style matched Ozzy's voice somehow and put Ozzy on a different level on the shelf of metal... when he died Ozzy basically became a hard rock artist until he went metal again with Zakk in the mid 90s. I think that's why Jake never got the recognition as a side man, because to be honest he didn't do much for Ozzy's career as in potting towards a new direction, the two albums he wrote have like 5 brilliant songs and the rest is basically the typical major A hard rock bs that all bands were doing in the 80s...( even tho IMO he's the best guitar player Ozzy ever had).

One thing, Randy recorded two Quiet Riot lp's so not his first time in the studio for Blizzard. But am sure with Oz the studio was head above better than what Randy ever saw prior. But yes the sound is a bit muddy and feels less sharp on Blizzard vs Diary. You are an amazing player!

Yeah I was joking a bit but Randy used a Plexi boosted with MXR Distortion +, which is, despite the name, an overdrive so yes 👌. BOSS SD-1 into an 800 works always for pretty much anything 🤟.
Something that frustrates me about no-nothings on the internet is they slam Zakk Wylde for adding all kinds of fills and flourishes to Randy's tunes, saying it's disrespectful, when in fact the inverse is true: Zakk is replicating all of the fills Randy played on stage. Pinch harmonics? That's Randy all the way. Of course these people have no idea because they've only heard Crazy Train on the radio and never listened to Tribute. Have you listened to the "Ozzy Live" album that came with the anniversary set? Randy's playing is if anything even more insane and wild than on Tribute. Just tremendous.

I would recommend the expanded re-release Diary of a Madman 2disc has an incredible live performance, In my opinion far better than tribute, they say Sharron is sitting on a treasure trove of Randy’s performances
I would like to hear this, I have heard about it in the past. I have also heard that Sharon is sitting on a lot of Randy's live recordings as well as possible live video recordings... Something I wish there was a lot more of. Hard for me to believe that they did not ever record a single video during a full tour.

My 800 is a special one. It’s stock but it has more everything than most 800s 👍😎. But it might be more than 6 ’cos like I said it’s been a while since I shot the video and don’t remember.

I'm a big fan of CyHra and I really wanted to see you play at a venue near me back in 2018, but you were only doing gigs in SE and FI (correct me if I'm wrong) so I actually flew all the way from Germany to see you in On The Rocks Helsinki in Nov 2018. Have you guys heard the final Rhoads solo recorded the day before he died? its very much the same from suicide solution from Tribute but he uses some really wide delays in the Melodic part then then it breaks into this track that I've never heard before. Thanks Euge! This is the most informative video I've ever seen on creating a legendary guitarist's tone with current gear. I remember many years ago when I first bought the Blizzard of Ozz album right after it was released here, my mind was completely blown, and it had everything to do with Randy's guitar work.
I am curious, why did you choose to use the Freidman pedal instead of that very nice JCM 800 for the base overdriven tone? Also, do you use the Boss chorus pedal only for the clean sounds?

Have you ever heard the original untouched version of Blizzard of Oz? The tone is way better.
I'm getting his live tone from Tribute through. Jackson RR5 Seymour Duncan JB Pickups > Maxon 808 OD > EVH Wah (Overdrive into the Wah for that loud pickup switching mute trick) > Boss Compressor Sustain > Donner Fall Delay > JCM 2000 TSL 100 Lead channel. Caline 10 Band EQ in FX loop > Boss Chorus Ensemble. JCM settings, Eq's all at 12 o'clock. Gain about 3-4 o'clock. Volume above 8 o'clock. I use the built in reverb. 10 band EQ I would say is the key. mids boosted, lows dropped and a little highs. and a 1960 4x12 of course. I'd be happy to send you a picture of my setup if it helps your research purposes! haha
What is untouched version? :-) I have the vinyl, the remastered CD and the re-recorded & mixed CD and of course the digital streaming services etc :-D

IMO Jake E Lee is Ozzy's best guitar player BUT Randy is the most revolutionary because he was different from all the others, he was doing his own thing, he was unique...In the 80s everyone was jumping on Eddie's hype train, the hair style, the guitars, the phrasing...Randy on the other hand was completely different, he was like a classical guitarist on steroids.. he was not like Malmsteen playing one million notes per second, just shredding.... he used his classical knowledge on riffing, chords, melodies and writing beautiful solos as well.. His style matched Ozzy's voice somehow and put Ozzy on a different level on the shelf of metal... when he died Ozzy basically became a hard rock artist until he went metal again with Zakk in the mid 90s. I think that's why Jake never got the recognition as a side man, because to be honest he didn't do much for Ozzy's career as in potting towards a new direction, the two albums he wrote have like 5 brilliant songs and the rest is basically the typical major A hard rock bs that all bands were doing in the 80s...( even tho IMO he's the best guitar player Ozzy ever had).

One thing, Randy recorded two Quiet Riot lp's so not his first time in the studio for Blizzard. But am sure with Oz the studio was head above better than what Randy ever saw prior. But yes the sound is a bit muddy and feels less sharp on Blizzard vs Diary. You are an amazing player!

@@EugeValovirta230V yea tone is in the fingers hehe. I know I will never play like him because no one will, but you still need some kind of base to get close to the tone, I maen even he wouldn't be able to play crazy train on clean tone like he played normally.
Yeah I was joking a bit but Randy used a Plexi boosted with MXR Distortion +, which is, despite the name, an overdrive so yes 👌. BOSS SD-1 into an 800 works always for pretty much anything 🤟.
They might've been those G12-65 speakers. Those are kind of like a higher watt, sorta dark Greenback esque speaker.

Something that frustrates me about no-nothings on the internet is they slam Zakk Wylde for adding all kinds of fills and flourishes to Randy's tunes, saying it's disrespectful, when in fact the inverse is true: Zakk is replicating all of the fills Randy played on stage. Pinch harmonics? That's Randy all the way. Of course these people have no idea because they've only heard Crazy Train on the radio and never listened to Tribute.
Have you listened to the "Ozzy Live" album that came with the anniversary set? Randy's playing is if anything even more insane and wild than on Tribute. Just tremendous.

It’s a been a while since I shot that video but probably my usual: Presence 5-7, Bass 9, Mids 4-6, Treble 6, Master 2-3 (=5-6 -> the usual JCM800 Master values /numbers don’t apply on this amp), Preamp 7 (=10 -> same thing than with Master control). Thanks! 🙏🤘

My 800 is a special one. It’s stock but it has more everything than most 800s 👍😎. But it might be more than 6 ’cos like I said it’s been a while since I shot the video and don’t remember.
