The back story is that during concerts in the 70's, inevitably someone in the audience would shout out "Whipping Post!" in request. Frank always thought wouldn't it be great if we could just, "Yeah, OK here, F U" and tear into the song. When Bobby Martin came into the band it was learned he could sing the snot out of it, and there ya go.

Robert "Bobby" Martin, 1984 at The Peir in NYC. Video marketed as "Does Humor Belong in Mucic."
    In Zappa's band '81 - '88
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Martin_%28singer%29?wprov=sfla1
Why did Zappa chose to play Whipping Post? A long time ago, he heard a guy in the audience yelled out "Whipping Post!" and he said to that guy "next time we're back we'll learn it for you". Once that boot was sufficiently circulated it really became a thing at all FZ shows, everyone yelling for wp. I'm sure I have that tape somewhere!

I enjoy Scott Tunes on bass, jumping around like a mad man. He was also in the band for several years. As for Bobby, he was often featured as the falsetto when Frank ordered up a doo-wop number.

Martin wasn’t singing falsetto according to him. Those high notes were part of his non-falsetto range. Recently The Zappa Band played at the Baked Potato in Studio City, CA. Three of the five in this band were in this video: Martin, Thunes and Ray White. Mike Keneally played keyboards and lead guitar while Joe (the vaultmiester) Travers played drums. Robert Martin still has it; vocally, on keys and saxophone!

The story goes this was the result of an audience member in Europe calling out a request for the song during one of Frank's shows. They could not fill the request at the time, but he made the band learn the song and next time they rolled through the town where they first encountered the request it was on the set list. Frank must have liked the song, as they played it fairly straight, as compared to their covers of "Purple Haze" and "I Am The Walrus."

So I was fortunate enough to be at this show. But me and a few friends had to watch from a side section over the fence we scaled. (We couldn’t get tickets so we improvised). But I was at the show at the Jones Beach theater the month prior. This was an amazing year for Zappa shows. And since you asked out of curiosity, Frank favored a reggae style vamp to solo over in later years. You can also find that rhythm imbedded in many songs.

Zappa-esque. I find great humor in how Frank would have the whole band drop completely out of the song and give him some twisted pedestrian reggae beat to solo to, then dump right back into the song. He did that a lot. Blessings.

4 octave range B.Martin..plays all horns instruments and keyboard...i believe he led his school in all horn instruments..sax/french horn/trombone..Alan Zavod from Australia. on other keys...he ended up writing orchestral scores for ochestra/rock band concerto's....Was also the musical accompaniment to recently decease Bert Newton on morning show Australia...can play any style. Before his short spell with Zappa. He was a professor of music in Boston ..and was picked up by Duke Ellington to study at Berklee.Boston campus...so was no slouch..don't think he handled the discipline of Zappa but springboarded to other great things.Scored 40 movies and Tv shows and composed for orchestra's Australia ,Europe and US...HAD DOCTORATE IN MUSIC...hE IS SO BROAD MUSICALLY HE WOULD BLOW YOUR MIND TO SEE WHAT HE ACHIEVED IN HIS LIFE...go for a look yourself....he was a dynamo musically..composed for Olympic games..ect ect

That song was the reason I bought the album. 🙂 The US has plenty of culture. A lot of the countries that dispute that is usually based on arrogant jealousy. As an Australian I can attest to that.

Awesome concert, Bobby Martin is the singer and keyboard player here... if you can check out some of the other cuts from this concert in particular "Be in my video" because another vocalist Ray White does vocals on that and he's incredible too.... a great reaction from you guys, you were energised but this performance and it shows.... Thanks!

The reason for why you haven't seen Robert Martin is mainly because he was in the late 80's lineup and much of the stuff you've reacted to was older.

Love this track, shows the class of the whole band. If you watch the whole video and from the '88 tour also I think it puts to bed the ridiculous notion that the '74 band had more fun/humour. Great selection Wayne.

Hi, great choice, Bobby Martin mean sax player too. Drums Chad wakerman went on to play with one of franks favourite guitarist Allan holdsworth, now there's a path to take, sadly no longer with us, his early playing with soft machine/Bruford a good place to start
    Keep well
    Keep calm

See "Whipping Floss" from the Helsinki concert on 1988's You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol.2, where the audience member was calling out for "Whipping Post" as they were about to play "Montana". So Frank inserted mention of a whipping post into "Montana".

With some of Frank's bands, he could merely use a hand signal to change up any song. One story says that Frank was in such a reggae mode that he turned almost every song of his into a reggae version, at least partially. Adlibs were a part of his concert performance, even for his band.
