Clarification on Testament's gender because I've gotten a few comments about calling them "he" in this video: Testament was always written to be nonbinary in some fashion starting all the way back in GG1 in 1998, where they were written to be both male and female. This was confirmed by Daisuke in a newsletter from the time of the game's release. The Guilty Gear series has historically had some spotty translations over the years, and Testament is one such case. Because of their appearance and voice (at least, their voice after GG1), the localizers mistakenly referred to them as male (this isn't an isolated incident, Justice is also called "he" in that game). This stems from the fact that Japanese rarely if ever uses pronouns to refer to people, and the studio probably didn't give them many notes to prevent easy mistakes like that. By the time more accurate translations came out in later games, the common understanding was that Testament was male and just sometimes called "they" because you can do that in English. Even the Dustloop page called them "he/him," lol. Testament also skipped out on Xrd, which is where a majority of the English speaking fanbase first jumped onto the series, so they didn't have a modern appearance with a proper translation. By the time of Strive, Testament considers themself genderless, and still goes by "they," now accurately translated in-house. This video was made 7 months before the reveal trailer, so I was still writing under the assumption that Testament was male. To be clear, I have no issue with nonbinary people or anything related to that stuff; if I wrote this today, I'd refer to them with neutral pronouns.
Hey, non-binary person here. Thats completely fair and I also thought for ages that Testament was Male based on the given translations and assumptions. The video is amazing by the way! ❤
Guilty Gear really is one of the most lived in fighting games of all time. Every character has goals and motivations. They all have clashing worldviews and contradicting lifestyles. It's mysterious but familiar, chaotic but calm. It looks like how Metal sounds like.
Guilty Gear is proof that if you have an idea for a work of art or a story or anything at all that you're really passionate about, you should just say "fuck it" and make it with all the passion you can muster.
Daisuke's art is always so nice to look at. One of my favourites is actually his most recent work to commemorate season 3 of Strive. Sol and Ky look awesome in that drawing
God I got into guilty gear this year thanks to woolie's summary of the series and jesus christ it's one of the best pieces of fiction I have ever seen. I also feel like everyone has a character that they can relate to/vibe with (mine is axl), thanks to ishiwatari's great character writing.
I always love the Guilty Gear art where the characters are doing mundane things or doing nothing important at all. The characters of Guilty Gear are always so bombastic and striking that seeing them in such normal situations feels really special. The one of Dizzy getting dressed in a very mundane outfit with Necro next to her is one of my favorites.
Daisuke is one of my greatest creative influences and I strive to be like him, not to stand in his shadow, but to show the world the art and characters I have and share the love of stories I have with the rest of the world.
Weird to think he could have ended up just making shooting games, wonder how his life would have turned out. Glad he did, his work is amazing and immaculate, honestly astounding.
damn, I never knew Daisuke was the illustrator behind all those pieces. now that I do it gives me a sort of feeling that as I sit down to draw his characters while listening to his music and thinking about his games I'm sharing in a part of his vision and that as I slowly work on the little fighting game that I'm making it somewhat follows in the same path as Guilty Gear and other ArcSys games that I love. thanks for making such an incredible video running through his artworks and method as an illustrator
12:15 This is the reason why I fell DEEPLY in love with this series. I bought every single game on steam, listen to the soundtrack of pretty much all the games endlessly, finding new things to love in each one, drawn some characters here and there, and recently I've even started a little passion project where I write a short story and dedicate it to every single playable character in the series! Every single character in the entire series has so much charm and personality, they ooze so much uniqueness and originality that I feel like you could make a game revolve around any of them and it would be just as good. It's not perfect, but it's such a mesmerizing and compelling world to me, and I simply can't ever get enough of it.

I can see why Daisuke would deny that he took inspiration from any other artists because the works that he made himself really do look like something truly there own and maybe the he may have been influenced but im sure there is a ton of artists out there that he's seen that he also likes and is maybe taken just a tiny bit of influence from everyone of them. I wouldn't say he would be inspired by jojos though because that just doesn't sound right. His art seems to only have curves in regards to line of actions but Daisuke's art seems to be vary angular and curvy when he does it. Daisuke's art in general also seems to always have tons of implied rectangles and squares while Jojos tends to mostly consist of tons of implied circles with occasionally have something rectangular or square in it but sometimes there is a way he draws the body to be rectangular at times. I find Daisuke's art truely cool and one of the best because his designs always tend to have tons of implied rectangles with lots of curves and in general has very angular designs when he makes his characters with details that actually look meaningful. I mention the detail parts because there's tons of anime designs out there have lots of details but they tend to always never add to the character it's just there and i mostly mean that as in the accessories they wear. Oh ya great video also

Oh no worries, Testament used to get translated as male because pronouns are weird in Japanese, and most of the English speaking audience was under the impression they were male. It wasn't until Strive when they were reintroduced that people outside of Japan became aware of their actual gender
@@TheCellarTaigenMoon Alright but what if he was born in America. Then he moved to Africa and became the president of all Africa... Then he started teaching all the Africans Japanese.......
Testament was frequently translated as being male to the point the English speaking community almost unanimously referred to them as such (including Dustloop) for years, that was my understanding until their reveal in Strive like a year after I made this

@@TheCellarTaigenMoon Havent they always been like that though? The old videos i saw described them as unknown gender. If im wrong, im sorry.
Oh no worries, Testament used to get translated as male because pronouns are weird in Japanese, and most of the English speaking audience was under the impression they were male. It wasn't until Strive when they were reintroduced that people outside of Japan became aware of their actual gender
@@TheCellarTaigenMoon That makes sense actually, i started with Strive so i just assumed its how theyve always been.
Technically it is how they've always been lol. Even Dustloop called them a he before they came back

@@TheCellarTaigenMoon fair but they have been using they/them canonicaly before strive
Testament was frequently translated as being male to the point the English speaking community almost unanimously referred to them as such (including Dustloop) for years, that was my understanding until their reveal in Strive like a year after I made this
