The most depressing part for me is that there is a real, human tragedy in all this. People who lost jobs, passions and years of hard work to EA.
All for it to be taken away once EA has milked said studio until there's nothing left.
Hopefully people who lose jobs from this get back on their feet eventually.
The biggest example I can found without googling was with George Fan creator of the original plants vs zombies he got fired as soon as PopCap was bought by you guessed it

EA: Cool story bro, but we want you to make it less scary, more like a mainstream garbage Call of Duty game. Also it needs microtransactions where you can buy resources even though that completely destroys the entire point of the game as a survival horror genre. And it needs to sell at least 5 million copies even thought it's never been able to gain anything near that amount of sales. Oh, and if it fails we're closing down your studio.

@@amogusinsuster9560 The ambitions were MUCH further than the actual release. I think Spore was a fantastic, Genre creating idea, hyped up to no man's sky levels, then executed badly.
EA didn't have a clue who their target audience was with spore, It's way too childish. I love the game despite it's shortcomings but they could've done ALOT better, have you seen the Spore E3 trailers and promo stuff?
The core game ideas are really unique and cool, but only the animal stage was executed well tbh. Not saying it's not fun or the other stages aren't fun, ive spent countless hours in the space stage but they all have massive flaws.
Cell stage is barely 10m long,
the tribal stage has lots of periods of just doing nothing and any strategy is shallowed down by everyone broadcasting their attacks and not interacting much with eachother,
The City stage has a win now button, natural resources arent good or decisive enough,
Space stage is tedious and has lots of endangered animal events etc which are a massive pain.

Sure the combat was rather bland and boring, but after playing ME1-3 the gameplay didn't really change as I found it just as bland and boring. I did like the infinite ammo Lazer guns the most though.

We stand on the brink of pre ordering call of duty world war 2: The fifth and I am afraid. For myself, for my sanity for my future gamer son - because if my time in the gamer corps taught me one thing: it’s that people never stop fucking pre ordering games from shitty companies that haven't released a good game in almost 5 god damn years.

Garrett Howard Honestly that’s a really good way to put it. I always loved Hardline but must admit it felt like it’s own game. Not like Cod or Battlefield, yet played like a mix of the two in a way.
Edit, just ramblin here: Hardline to me felt more focused than the others. Never really had multiple squads working together and actually properly prioritizing targets like in Hardline. One guy nails a sniper, another guy ziplines to the building where the sniper was and the objective is, another guy hits the lower floor with smoke or gas and then suppressive people push in. It was awesome!
For real dude. Dead Space is one of my favorite franchises and when I heard Visceral shut down, really hurt

So you are losing if you don't pay, but there's still "Epic Quest" where amazing paid level plants can be won, after replaying it again, there are no more epic quest where you can win op plants and they're all unlockable when paid for, like 4 or 5 dollars each plants

Just imagine, if they had properly managed these studios they could possibly have even more money, and more properties. They could potentially be so large that steam would be weak. @@mrmoon3250 Thats generally how they do it. Thats the point of my comment. If they allowed the studios to stay and managed them better than they could of made more money. One easy solution is to have studios make games and you just direct them to follow deadlines. Once a game is released you have a dedicated team that does the patching and bug fixing and expansions. Sometimes the full team will help out especially on major expansions. Ideally you limit yourself so you can guarentee profit. And the profits of the games goes into a account that pays ahead like 4 years or so and the rest goes to ea. If one studio strughles then ideally you make changes and the other studios cover. Going that route means you could have about a dozen studio EA title released every year along with whatever main EA does. Main EA will do its own thing along with helping with patching, bug fixing and expansions. New games would be made, new concepts would be done. We could have a 1,000 ea games in the store right now if done like that. More games do mean more failures. But they would likely have more success. If game is not working out during development then you could spend m9re time on it. Like mass effect andromeda. Because delayinf one game is easier when you are releasing anywhere from a dozen to 20 games total a year.
If EA did that, I would say they would eventually become a monopoly of the gaming world

The issue is their growth would be lower for the short term, their gains be less for the short term, and their investors would be mad for the short term. Which is likely why they wont do it. Because one studio flops with one game the investors demand a sacrifice.

It was definitely improving, like, a lot. But, then it just abruptly got abandoned. I don't think it was quite at the point where it can be considered any kind of success story, just not a total flop like it was at release. Which is sad, because another year or even another 6 months of actual development might have made it a real good game, if they continued the trend of improvement.

It’s sad to think that some already thriving company’s are following suit in this trend such as 343, activision, and blizzard. These company’s are turning what used to have a good franchise of games like modern warfare and halo and turn them into money hungry leaches that suck the money off any person with their moms debit card. In my opinion it’s Rockstar games that made it the worst by introducing shark cards into GTAV as a way of literally giving someone a flying bike with missiles. Many of the loot boxes that some games have are downright scams and trick little kids into gambling. It is an awful thing and should be made illegal.

John Sylvyn remember when rice gum did that scummy thing where he encouraged kids to gamble on his website. The website would say the more money you spend the higher the likely good you will get a house or some dumb shit like that, EA did almost the same thing. With battle front you used to be able to buy loot crates that’d say you have the chance of getting 100000 points or even downright win the game instantly. However these crates were only available if you were to spend at least $30 on it making it gambling, you are gambling on the sliver of a chance to get something that might not even be possible to get. It’s easier to program ways to keep kids playing these games by letting them win once every 5 crates. But that’s how you get sucked in. Slot machines work on the same premise.
Nathan GG if it were business than not as many people would have a problem with it. Business involves creating and making a deal where both sides know the terms and conditions to the product of which one side is either selling or buying. Gambling is buying the chance of getting what you want, the more you spend the higher the likely hood you will get a larger pay out. However this “large payout” might not be as valuable as you’d might think because you will lose money trying to make it. in gambling with cards it’s based off your hand and what someone else is giving you while slots are when you have zero clue to what you are going to get but the house does. Now that slot machines are almost 100% digital it’s as easy as cake to make the gambler lose money while at the same time keep him from leaving. This is why you see people talking about micro transactions with EA a lot because their “lootcrates" are practically based on slot machines.
Nathan GG I get that 100% but there are other ways to making money other than the ways that EA is doing. What EA does is manipulate the consumer into buying a product that will hurt them. (IE Gambling for children)

Galimeer5 luckily Battlefront II is good now. The devs actually listen to the feedback, and EA completely abandoned it. What that means is that DICE has full control over the game, mostly. Of course the content added needs to be approved by EA and Disney. That’s the only role EA fills. Battlefront II has also brought the TX-130 tank into Star Wars canon again. The devs are really passionate Star Wars fans. The game has made a complete 180.

I think the best example is literally turning Sims and Spore - two extremely creative titles that were basically design tools at their core, into either a DLC collection simulator with some glaring gameplay issues or a forsaken game that had potential to develop into something big, respectively. All because profits are more important than the fanbase.

I hate it when you buy things, expect it to be a complete product only to find that you gotten 10% of it, while the remaining 90% are sold seperately. Games like BOTW had a complete game (100%) with DLC being extras.

It’s common that MTX (microtransactions) in $60 are in a state where you “grind up or pay up”, games deliberately made crappy to coherce player to pay up, or grind for a long time, by law in the eyes of AAA industry.
EA recently infringed a law in Belgium about its gambling nature on FIFA18, 2K games begging players to remove such a law so they can continue loot boxes in NBA2K19.
Very late thing to say: EA also ruin indie game, Plants vs Zombies developer was coherced into adding P2W or get fired. The dev choose the latter
