      And 3 different dryers because you don't want the residue to coat the interior of the barrel and it will cause cross contamination. And because there will be airborne fibers when you open the dryer, to avoid cross contamination, you will need 3 different laundry rooms. But then, you have the issue of central air systems circulating the contaminated air to all the rooms so you will need 3 different houses. preferably in different zip codes. In different states. to make sure you don't get cross contamination.

    I simply don't understand the need to separate the colors. The whole purpose of washing the towels is to get the dirt, wax, product, etc. out of the microfiber. If I'm washing 6 green towels and 2 blue towels together, you're arguing that the debris from the green towels will somehow come clean but move over to the blue towels that are being cleaned in the exact same load?? That makes no sense. You're either cleaning your towels or you're not.

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  9 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Holadude96 You should re-watch the video.

    • @Holadude96
      @Holadude96 9 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Chemical Guys Why? I understood your explanation the first time, but I honestly just don't see how it makes any difference. It's an honest question. So you use the different colors for different purposes but the only physical difference between the towels is the color. Correct? One's not a heavier knap than the others or some such. So again if you're washing the towels to remove the contaminants, regardless of what part of the car they were picked up from, they should come clean no matter if they're washed with like colors or not. What you're essentially suggesting is that one color towel gets cleaner than the others for whatever reason, and that doesn't make any sense.

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  9 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Holadude96 What we are suggest is that you separate towels to avoid cross-contamination. Using Grey towels to clean wheels will fill the towel with brake dust. Green towels never touch the wheels, thus if you wash the brake dust filled towels and waxing towels together, there is a chance that brake dust may become impregnated in the green towel. Now if you go to wax your car, the small amount of brake dust maybe cause swirls and scratches on the paintwork. This does happen often, and when you are detailing sensitive paintwork, any particulate matter that is inside the microfiber fabric will scratch the paintwork. These problems can be prevented by washing towels in color-coded groups. Plus, if you are washing "6 green towels and 2 blue towel", you should really wait till more towels are dirt to wash a bigger load. Washing bigger towels together saves water and energy.

    • @Holadude96
      @Holadude96 9 ปีที่แล้ว +56

      Chemical Guys I understand that. I guess the point of contention here is that if you're worried about cross contamination, then your towels aren't getting completely cleaned, hence my comment in my original reply..."you're either cleaning your towels or you're not".
      Regarding towels being washed in my hypothetical, those numbers were picked completely arbitrarily for the sake of illustration.

    • @adamhudson5437
      @adamhudson5437 9 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      +Holadude96 it's one way to help make themselves look more professional, but completely unnecessary imo. like you said, either they're clean or not.

    Its just like the man says, different colored towels are intended for different areas of the vehicle. Take a brand new car drive it 2 miles. The grime and\or dirt on the lower part of the door will be different than that of the roof. Going the little extra distance to keep things clean is only assisting to reduce the risk of cross contamination of the tiny particles that may not get completely washed out. I have been detailing in different situations including body shops for a while (thats a whole different beast). Proper care of your equipment is essential BECAUSE OF:: #1. Stupid people wanting to use my stuff, #2. Flying micropieces of steel or dirt from people grinding, sanding, sweeping, and welding near me:----- realized pretty fast that I have no choice to PUT my towels, washing mitts (one just for black cars!,one for nasty dirty cars, & one for everything else), AND all buffing pads ALL in separate ziplock bags AFTER cleaning those. I also make sure im not dusty. May seem silly but I keep my buffer clean as well, wiping down the cord once in a while too. This all sounds like a lot but its worth it. Clean the stuff that cleans your stuff you know. Ignore the ignorant chemical guys, for you know what you're doing.

    • @zone4garlicfarm
      @zone4garlicfarm 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most fabric softeners are made from sheep fat with fake scents added. The scent agents might be toxic but the fat is not. The reason to avoid using them with microfiber towels is the fat will coat the fibers and make the cloth much less absorbent.

    I fill a bucket with warm water, place a dirt trap at the bottom put the detergent and the towels and just rub them gently for a few minutes and hang them dry.

      @ChemicalGuys  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Humberto, Microfiber Wash is designed to be used in the machine or by hand, so if you are successfully getting all of the dirt, embedded contaminants, and spent product out of the microfiber towels by hand washing, then that's totally fine! The problem can occur when you do not completely remove those things and they come back to haunt you on your next detail. So, just make sure to get everything totally out of the towel! We also recommend drying your towels in the dryer. Thanks for watching and make sure to check back tomorrow for a new video upload!

    It’s sounds silly, separating by grade but it works and the best I’ve found is to buy an inexpensive portable washer and simply use it for all my microfiber towels. You won’t use as much water and you have a dedicated washer to do it. I use a light detergent nothing special and I get perfect results. And it would be bad business not to have a product placement when doing an instructional video in your area of business so I get that but I’ve never let an ad dictate anything to me so I guess I’m different

Make sure to buff off immediately, don't let the chemicals sit as they absorb into the screen and damage the sensitive electronics underneath.

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Alex. that's a great question. The microfiber towels are all 70/30 blend microfiber with laser cut edges to prevent scratching. They were color coded so that you wouldn't mix them up. Green for paint, blue for windows , yellow for interior, black for wheels, tires, engine bays, and grey for leather. You don't want to use the towels you used for your wheels on your paint because wheels have abrasive break dust that can damage your clear coat. You can use the towels in any order you see fit, in any color combination you see fit as long as you don't confuse them. Stay tuned Alex, we've got more great videos launching this week.

Time to get yourself a new one. I just read below and I see this ? was somewhat answered :o/ Anyways I guess this video is your suggestion and how you wash them, So we have to respect that. It is also not a bad idea for places that do alot of Detail and have Employees, This way they all follow a pattern. Thanks for taking the time to make the video :o) I have a set of LG Modern Front Load Washing Machine and Dryer. I don't have to wait for a large load, I can just do one piece at a time, Since it has Sensors that detect , how many pieces it has and how much water to use. My question is, since I DO use dryer sheets (fabric softener) for my normal day to day clothing, etc., am I still ok to put the microfiber towels in my same dryer just without a dryer sheet? Or will the any "leftover" from past dryer sheets affect the micro fibers?

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey there, I'll be glad to answer that for you. You should be fine to use the dryer without the sheets, it won't damage the towels as long as you dry on low, and wash on hot.

    What's your preference in drying your car after washing; microfiber towel or the typical chamois ?

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Andre! Thanks for tuning in. Microfiber towels are recommended for a scratch-free finish. The fibers lift and trap water drops and particles to carry it off of the surface of the vehicle whereas a chamois drags the water across the surface leaving the potential to scratch or swirl the finish. - Happy detailing!!

    What if I only have a few towels from you guys? Like 5 total, and they are all different colors. What should I do then? Wash each towel separately ???? Or can I just put it all together in the wash?
    The only towels I have is a grey "waffle weave drying towel" and a "red happy ending" towel for wax and clay bar lubricant and a black regular microfiber towel to dry the tires and sometimes another happy ending towel for my quick detail spray.
    They are 1 towel each for different purposes. What should I do? I don't wanna waste water and soap for 1 towel but you guys are saying not to gross contaminate either. So what's the best option?
    Also I have a front facing facing wash. How would I add the soap in?

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you don't want to use a washing machine, you can wash them in a bucket of warm water and scrub them on a grit guard or with a brush. Once they're done, you can hang dry them but it won't have the best results as it would with a washer and dryer.

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Jeff, thanks for sharing that with us. The main items not use when washing microfiber towels are bleaches and fabric softeners. Microfiber towels are the perfect drying towel for detailing because they are ultra soft laser cut strands, and they have a static cling that attracts dirt when the towel makes contact with the paint. Bleaches burns the fibers causing them to become hard and abrasive, the coarse fibers end up scathing your paint which will then need to be polished later. Always wash in hot, and dry on low to maximize the life of your towels. I think one soap is enough as well, we have a microfiber detergent available on our website if you want the perfect detergent that's completely safe for your towels.

    Cleaning garage towels separately from household is good enough for me. The key is a detergent that breaks down the buildup with hot water and an extra rinse cycle. That color separation is OCD unless you have to clean a full load of each at a time. Notice the use of ALL or any other good laundry detergent. HOT WATER is key.

    Hey guys, outstanding channel with many great vids! Question: How many washes will your microfibers hold up through? Not so much concerning the staining and soiling which can vary to use/application (I did kill one with a single use cleaning up a differential!) ... but more over the life of the towels under normal use. How to know what the "life span" is?

    • @LUk3.M.
      @LUk3.M. ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on how they're used and depends on how they're washed. But, with regular use I would say 6-8 months. Maybe 15 cleaning cycles before they should be replaced, the fibers are not nearly as effective after that point.

    So let me get this straight. When washing microfiber towels that have been used for different purposes, the dirt will come loose and attach it self to another towel? You should probably buy a new washing machine, it sounds like the one you have now is broken since it won't remove the dirt from the microfiber towels you are washing.

    • @ChemicalGuys
      @ChemicalGuys  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      HI Ivan, I can tell you our process of washing microfiber towels. First, separate microfiber towels by type into designated wash & dry loads. Keep grimy towels separate from cleaner paint towels,. Start by washing "cleaner" towels first, then finish with the grimier ones. Hot water is able to open up the fibers to better release dirt and grease. Don't use fabric softener because then it'll clog up and render them nonabsorbent. Machine dry in LOW heat because as you said, high heat cooks the fibers, making them hard and prone to scratching paint. Again, don't use fabric softener because it'll clog and render them useless.

I throw them in the washing machine, choose the hot water setting, use a small amount of a non scented detergent and then dry them immediately. I them fold them and put them in a $10 plastic tub from home depot. I wash my cars every couple weeks and do a good interior clean once a month or so. Honestly, the cars stay pretty spotless and at the end of the day thats why i do it.

      It's recommended to separate the various towels because each towel comes into contact with different areas of the car, exposing the towels to dirt and chemicals unique to that section. You don't want break dust on your paint due to break dust's corrosive nature. Also you don't want waxes and glazes mixing with your towels, I've had a window towel with glaze or wax on it and smeared on my windshield. There's a logical reason for all of this, you should do your best to keep them apart. Stay tuned for more great videos!
