"You only have 3 seconds left." "Given the answers remaining, and my knowledge on the subject, I do believe it is within my best interest to select D: To Kill a Mockingbird"
I like when Meredith tells her the correct answer and she says "that was my..." like she knew that was the answer the whole time. That was your WHAT? 3RD GUESS?
Actually it was "fitting" because the author of "Gone With the Wind" spent a ridiculous amount of time at the Atlanta library when she was alive and was very well known there, coupled with Atlanta playing a decent role in the book itself. Many of her personal possessions are on display at that library. Her grave is less than 2 miles from there as well.
I love how once she's told the correct answer at 1:22 she says, "Oh! That was my . . . ." As in "that was going to be my third choice! Dang it, if only I'd had more time! And more guesses!"
i love at the end when she says "oh, that was my..." ? 3rd guess out of 4 choices? i bet there would be a lot more millionaires if everyone had 3 guesses
The issue is normally they look for contestants that talk alot especially about the questions, it's just very counterintuitive in this format. She was just doing what she agreed upon for being selected on the show.
"You only have 3 seconds left." "I thought for certain it would be A: The sound and the Fury, but as it were, I was sorely mistaken and so I am now forced into a position where I will have to go forward with my best guess, and I believe that my best guess would be to go with D: To Kill a Mockingbird."
RoIIingStoned Let me rephrase; what do you believe is obscure about it? It's quite clear and concise for a trivia question. "Gone with the Wind" is recognized as one of the most known and translated stories on the planet, with strong ties to Atlanta (unlike the other choices). That is what makes it "fitting" that the typewriter used to write it would be displayed in an Atlanta library. Given that it's one of the most popular and well known classic stories, even today, it's a pretty straight forward question--that's why it was an easier-level question. There's a difference between just not knowing the answer vs. the question being obscure.
RoIIingStoned Your point seemed rather clear to me, I though the question was rather obscure as well. Actually, the first thought I had was, this must be worth a bit until the prize was revealed. I'm past 30 and have still never seen or read anything to do with the story but then again I prefer stories like the one by Dee Brown, maybe slightly different to what happens during 'Gone with the wind'. hahaha. Happy dnf
i always felt they shouldn't have started the clock until meredith finished reading the question, it can potentially screw over the contestant if the question is long or if Meredith stumbles. Remember Regis nearly blowing it for a contestant on the 10th anniversary special.
I do remember Regis ANGRILY glaring at producers offstage after he stopped laughing at the joke answer and they orange-locked the contestant's correct late answer even though the timer went to 0. He clearly hated the timers, and especially that they kept the joke D answer on top of them.
Yeah, she made the mistake of saying "I'm gonna go with" when there was only 3 seconds left on the clock, when you're that low on time just blurt out your next answer. She should've just said "D final" instead of "I'm gonna go with" (clock hits zero) "D, To Kill A Mockingbird...."
In an alternate universe..... "I'm going to use my Quadruple dip." Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. "I'm gonna go with..." Sorry times up, you lose. Thanks for playing.
All she needed to know to arrive at the correct answer is GWTW is set in Atlanta, Georgia. That's why Meredith said "Fittingly..." None of the other novels are in that setting.

@lemonrind The very first sentence on Wikipedia defines the concept of Linguistics: " Linguistics is the scientific study of human language." You have great insight! Great job!
True story: I once saw someone use Double Dip with just 2 seconds on the clock. He missed the first guess and I was like "Oh no..." The instant the clock started for the 2nd guess, he blurted out, as quickly as he could, "D, final answer."
That's two times someone ran out of time on a Double Dip. Explains another reason why they did away with the clock eventually. When you use that and know you HAVE to give two answers before time runs out-the guy who did it failed to grasp the concept, but at the time I did too-you need to make sure that you're able to think fast in both those moments. Also, even if she'd said "To Kill A Mockingbird. Final answer." in time, she still would've been wrong. The result would've been the same.
@Greenhelm64 Yep, they do, and they've been using it for a few years. They also only tape special celebrity shows now - general contestants aren't on the show anymore. Anything you've watched where they don't have the clock is an old rerun. Check a few videos around TH-cam that are recent.
@Brady2k10 Yes, the UK does have a clock - they've had it for awhile now, but they only have a few shows a year now and they are celebrities only. The US hasn't used a clock for almost two years now.
The only relief of failing like this is having done it early enough that it didn't cost her significantly. Make this kind of error above 100K, and you'd really look stupid.

@prettylidi14 What makes it "fitting" that the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library displays the Gone With the Wind typewriter is that a large part of the plot in Gone With the Wind is centered around Atlanta during the Civil War.

3 seconds left on the clock. "So........I'm.....gonna.......go......with........"

Yea cuz the answer was wrong. She was only guessing
That's what you say while you are still thinking instead of being quiet. There's even a dramatic pause in between.
yes because while you are saying it you are also still thinking.
Still the wrong choice though. It wouldn't have mattered if she had a million seconds left.

WTF was she gonna say? Oh that was my 3rd choice. Derp.
This comment was made when Derp was still a common phrase.

The issue is normally they look for contestants that talk alot especially about the questions, it's just very counterintuitive in this format. She was just doing what she agreed upon for being selected on the show.
She shouldn't have wasted two seconds by saying "I'm tonna go with". If I was her, I would cry for 1 year
And that's the downside with double dip. If time runs out, it's treated as a wrong answer.
And also the fact that you can't walk away and got to play it regardless the answer you select.
"You only have 3 seconds left."
