      @@ahqeeefyeah, sure, a lot of them. but as a political movement it’s more about protecting the first amendment and establishing a clear separation between church and state.
      their religion exists more as a form of activism than a direct response to christians. most christians, i’m sure, see the sense in it and are not actually offended. satan is just a powerful piece of rhetoric, a powerful counterpoint to the intrusion of religious doctrine on public grounds. it’s not about “pwning the christians.”
      americans are so used to christianity, we don’t really question it when we see it. but if you see a big baphomet statue, you do question it. and that leads to asking questions about the separation of church and state in general. often, their goal is to be removed in order to set a precedent for other religious icons.
      in short, they are just choosing the most powerful and culturally relevant counterpointed symbol that they can find. it’s not about hurting christians, or scaring them, it’s about preventing their political aims. which i do think is actually important.

    On the 'everyone deserves a friend who doesn't know what their job is thing', and knowing i'm doing exactly the kind of explaining you talked about but I can't stop myself, I think the key reason why it doesn't connect with you is because you have a creative job. I've jumped around a lot between different shitty minimum-wage blue-collar jobs and while people might have asked what I do when I first meet them, it'll be different in six months and the less they ask about my work as a janitor or cashier or factory worker or whatever the better for me; it's not an activity I have anything to say about. And having had that kind of work-life I also struggle with being interested in other people's jobs unless they bring it up, because for me "work" is purely a shitty, mindless necessity and I unfortunately tend to project that onto other people unless they actively show me otherwise.
    So I both like having such friends as mentioned in the tweet, and I frequently *am* that friend (for better or for worse). I don't even know if my sibling has a job right now or what it is if so, and I usually talk to them a few times a week. About their kid, about shared hobbies, about movies or books, about food, whatever interests us at the time. But unless they bring up work that's not gonna be relevant to me; I know they're making do economically and that's what matters in terms of labor.

      my job just has a dry, complicated explanation because "my company is a third party hired by insurance companies to perform forensic review of high dollar medical bills" is jargon-adjacent and people don't 100% know what it means. i use exclusively programs nobody has heard of and do boring spreadsheets about it. that's why people don't know what i do exactly.

Or people like yourself who have really interesting jobs they're passionate about (I'm just assuming you're passionate about it because it sounds cool forgive me if it's actually rly dull) but no-one can be bothered to try and understand it. I've never identified as a Satanist, but having grown up as an Evangelical Fundamentalist, I get why they identify that way. When you're gay and in the church I attended, you're often told that it's Satan who is trying to convince you that you can be happy as an openly gay person. When you're a woman, you're told that seeking power in the church is Satan's influence. When you're disabled, telling non-disabled people not to pray over you is seen as being sinful for a variety of reasons. Heck, I was even criticized for causing men to lust because my disability made it difficult for my top on the right side to not slip down and reveal my bra strap. When you look at the way the church treats people in marginalized groups and see that all Satan wants is for you to be who you are, it can be easy to look at Satan as the unsung hero in the Biblical story. It's easy to identify with him because he demanded to usurp power over him that he saw as unjust, and he rallied others around him for that purpose. He's the ideal. A character who did what he thought was right, even knowing that he was fighting an all-powerful being. That's a powerful symbol when you leave the faith, and it can be cathartic to just admit, "Yes, I am the evil that you despise so much, that I was taught to fear so that these cis white heterosexual non-disabled men could monopolize power, and I revel in being that evil."

      @leaffinite2001 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I cant personally relate to that, but i cant imagine the catharsis is worth making your opinion/perspective so absolutely ridiculously easy to misconstrue or lie about, that taking up the name of Christianitys greatest boogieman delivers satisfaction enough to justify it. I also cant imagine the idea appealing to anyone who hasnt gone through that sort of thing either, as while i can be sympathetic to the idea, continued use of the term just feels petty, like defining yourself in opposition to Christianity instead of actually being free from it.

    • @BSR-zy2so
      @BSR-zy2so ปีที่แล้ว +39

      @leaffinite3828 Well, I would argue that I will never be free of Christianity within my lifetime. I come from a family that's very fundamentalist Christian, and I live in an area where fundamentalist Christians commonly make laws to suppress my rights. Like it or not, I'm in a position where I will be engaging with it for the rest of my life. As I said, I'm not a Satanist, but I think that there's power in the statement. To an Evangelical Fundamentalist, no matter what I do, I will always be evil and Satanic. My position will always be misconstrued and lied about on the reg. Labeling yourself as a Satanist is empowering because you're reclaiming the use of a figure that was used to scare you into compliance your whole life. It's kind of like how many gay people have reclaimed the term "queer." When they did that, they took away the power that their oppressors had to use it against them.

    • @leaffinite2001
      @leaffinite2001 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BSR-zy2so it just doesnt matter because to me because outside of that emotional aspect it has no benefit. I can understand logically if people prefer that but ill never empathize with it or partake in it. You cant reclaim satanism like you can words like queer because its part of a wider belief system as opposed to just being a slur, its like trying to redefine what "earth" means. I wont argue about this further because i recognize the issue is im trying to come up with a logical reason to use the term satanist outside of pettiness or intentionally pissing off christians, and there isnt one.

    • @BSR-zy2so
      @BSR-zy2so ปีที่แล้ว

      @leaffinite3828 Well, if you're looking for a logical reason to use the term, it's been used successfully to advocate for church/state separation. Satanists often ask for inclusion in public spaces, like schools or government facilities, where Christianity has privilege in a particular area. When Satanists demand equal access, Christians' distaste for a religion based around Satan will often reveal gatekeeping tactics that need to be closed. Forcing the courts to confront Christian supremacy usually expands rights for religious minorities.
      Note: I would also argue that what Satanists are doing is no less valid than what Jewish feminists did with the Lilith figure. Lilith was part of a wider belief system, but her image was reclaimed from being a patriarchal reminder to women of their husband's supremacy. Now, Lilith is often a figure that represents the autonomy of women, even against insurmountable patriarchy. Even if the reasons behind the reclamation were only "emotional," this was incredibly empowering to many women and helped them overcome oppression that they had faced based on the Lilith story. I admire and support that, just as I admire and support Satanists.

    Little Joel’s Strange World take is kinda similar to what I brought up to my family after we watched it. Like the problem in the movie is the energy itself, not the way it’s used unsustainably. It would be like us recognizing that our use of fossil fuels is hurting the planet and deciding the solution is to nuke all the oil and coal instead of readdressing the way we use it. Like in the movie, the existence of the plant itself is what’s killing the planet, but in the real world, the way giant corporations use fossil fuels and lobby to keep us dependent on fossil fuels is what’s killing the planet. Oil simply being on earth isn’t the problem, it’s how we use it

    • @oasntet
      @oasntet ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yeah, it's a very sloppy metaphor. It does seem like cultivating the parasite plant does contribute to it growing more and endangering the turtle, but it's not examined in enough detail to explain that somehow it wasn't a crisis when there were just a few of the plants in their native habitat. Having every parasite plant connected is also awkward because the 'everything is connected' trope is usually meant as a good thing.

    • @loreleimonn3220
      @loreleimonn3220 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@oasntet yeah, it ends up being convoluted and confusing. The analysis it provides is also at best interpersonal rather than systemic. Like there’s the fact that the plant is a natural thing, yet makes the planet sick, which contradicts the metaphor, but there’s also the fact that the solution is something a few people can solve with one decision and the big conflict perpetuating it is just that some people don’t want to let go of the past. But real life is so much broader and harder to tackle than that. Our current economic system is dependent on fossil fuels, and it’s not a simple matter of what people want but the systems of power that keep us dependent of fossil fuels and can only be beaten through broad solidarity and mass action against those systems

    It's not even solar! It's a wind turbine demonstrated in the last couple minutes, but since the whole movie has a green airship with propellers, it's super easy to miss that the new airship is a simple green balloon with a turbine generator, not propellers for propulsion. And it's on-screen for about five seconds.

You can't just say "no, that's not 'real' Satanism" thousands of years later, as if one person can decide that definition no longer applies. There is the traditional meaning of "Satanist" defined as someone who worships Satan in willful defiance of God, and there is the newer meaning defined as an antitheist who applies Satanic symbolism to their opposition to theistic religion in general but usually Christianity in particular. Those are clearly different people, and if you ask which one is the "real" Satanist, most people won't give you the answer you want.

    • @louisaruth
      @louisaruth ปีที่แล้ว +10

      i might be able to explain- i think the vibe around that tweet stems from people (mostly younger generations) preferring to not be defined by their jobs. when i finished college in 2008 and everything was fucked, my peers and i all agreed that there was nothing more rude or alienating than being asked, "so, what do you do?" upon introduction. this question almost always came from folks insulated from the crash who seemed unaware that they were interrogating you about how you were literally staying alive. it induced stress just thinking about how to answer without getting existential, so the conversation would go like this:
      "do you mean, "what do i do?" bc i do lots of stuff, or do you mean "what do i do for money?"?"
      "tee-hee, i mean "what do you do for money?""
      "oh. i work menial job for pay that does not cover the bills with no end in sight. i don't really want to think about it right now." and then change the subject without asking what they do.
      that said, it can be a total privilege to be able to live undefined by your job. your friends can only not know what you do for a living if things are so good for you that you have nothing to complain about. still, i NEVER ask what people do/did for a living, and if they don't bring it up, i will never know.
      i have not had a job since covid started, so when i was catching up with an old friend the other day who asked what i have been up to, and i started explaining, they interrupted to clarify, "no like, for work"... sigh. the last thing i want to talk about about is goddamn work (unless you are unionizing or quitting). i guess that makes me the person that people should be friends with 🤷‍♀

The idea that people feel ashamed of being unemployed or having a low-paying job or getting money from their parents or whatever does put it into context. I know from experienced that getting asked what you do for a living all the time when you are unemployed is extremely irritating, even if most people don't really judge you for it.
      I still can't really get behind the tweet, because I still don't think it's that crucial to have friends you never open up to, but it does make way more sense now.

    Wow, I love these longer videos from Little Joel! How novel!
    I wonder if there's somewhere I can see more longer videos... perhaps from a bigger joel?
    I guess I'll never know.
