  • As Halloween approaches, watch us prep and launch our Catalina 22 for a weekend of sailing mischief. We enjoy a wide range of sailing conditions from slow and easy to hold on and pray. We spend a rainy day exploring the forest and beaches that surround the beautiful Lake James NC.
    Halloween brings intense winds that defy the boundaries of our comfort zones, forcing them to expand.
    SV Sophia is a 1990 Catalina 22 with a fixed, wing keel also known as a shoal keel.

    Another awesome video!! Loved the mix of practical tips, narration, classical music, sponge bob references, fall colors and of course, your camera and editing skills. You are truly blessed to have a wife who loves to do the same things with you. Keep setting these high bars on videos and a whole bunch of us are going to have to learn to pole vault........

    Glad to see you enjoying sailing early in life . So many can't enjoy a boat unless it travels 60 mph. Sailboats are such a wonderful experience. I was in my 50's before we bought ours. I regret not doing it earlier .

      Yeah, I got this one (my first) at 40. I wish I would have started earlier too.

      I came of age in the early 70's. I wanted to learn to do three things life. Become good at tennis, snow skiing and sailing. I got pretty good at the first two, in addition to two marriages and raising three children. I didn't get around to starting sailing until I was 67. And yes, I wish I had started a lot earlier. But you can sail well into your 70's provided you are in good health.

    It's easy to get whitecaps on the Linville side of the lake when a cold front is blowing in out of the NW. It comes down off the face of the Blue Ridge and runs down through a slot on the lake. You can walk out on that pier, which is sheltered from winds out of the NW to NE. But look out a hundred yards or so and you can see the whitecaps rolling and the wind will be blowing 20 to 30 mph. I've had planing dinghies out in that, and sometimes it's simply too much.

    • @odysseyofjason
      @odysseyofjason  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, sometimes it gets wild out there and it can go from calm to crazy in a few minutes. We've had some white knuckle moments for sure.

    Where are you sailing man. Would like to look it up on Google earth. Fun video, cool under pressure. You can tell a real sailor because when the wind turns to a gale and you know what hits the fan there grinning from ear to ear and thinking bring it on. The Columbia river gorge is like that, light or no winds, or a near death ride. Keep having adventures.

      This is Lake James in North Carolina. It can be very unpredictable and things change quickly...
      A bit of a clarification: When I said "I never panicked. I was cool and composed the whole time" That might not have been entirely true 😉😅

    Howdy, O of J. I'm so psyched for the sailing weather ahead. Trailer sailors in West Virginia! We're liking the idea of a multi-day trip to Lake Lanier in GA, nine hours drive, where we could put the mast up once (P-18) and sail for a few days, mooring, docked, either one. Any other recommendations?

    • @odysseyofjason
      @odysseyofjason  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been looking at Jocassee Lake in South Carolina. Not sure how good the sailing would be but the place looks absolutely amazing. The water is supposed to be really clear. There's cliffs and waterfalls, they have boat in campsites but the shores are rocky so you would have to anchor out. I'm hoping to get there this summer.
