Something beautiful about coming back to basics, I myself as a piano student find constantly that most of my problems come to these basics. Thank you Josh for sharing your experience with the end of Chopin Concerto. A lesson in being humble and piano playing!
I love this. I have noticed that many students learning scales pause at the crosses, and greatly kick out the elbow. For example, as the right hand plays C ascending, some students hold 3 on E, elevate their hand, pivot, and lift the elbow so much that the whole hand points toward the left -- all in an effort to make the cross legato. That puts the hand in an awkward position and makes more work to line up the hand again. Even as students increase speed and no longer need to pause at the cross they still have the habit of an extreme elbow lift. This exercise eliminates all of that. It also helped me consider that I could teach students scale fingerings staccato first so they get the whole hand movement, then when that's down, go for legato. Thank you!
I played the piano for 6 years when I was a kid and now for the first time in 10 years I'm trying to really get back to playing. I found that I've become very tense compared to when I was playing regularly and my fingers would "stumble" when playing scales - I tried practicing in some other ways, but this, while being a really simple tip, was revolutionary! My hand loosened up and I can hear a difference in sound quality. Thank you so much, your other videos have been helping me a lot as well! :)

Since you mentioned Chopin I watched a video a short time ago and the pianist stated that notes from Chopin's students said that he taught the black key scales first and the C scale last. He believed that the long fingers go on the black keys and short fingers on the white keys.
