  • Traditionally, iPhones have taken JPEG photos, just like most other smartphones. But starting with iOS 11, the format switched to HEIC. Which caused some problems for iPhone users. But Apple did have a couple reasons for the change.

    • @kencur9690
      @kencur9690 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. How can people not see it instantly? It’s compressing more, and most likely that means loss of detail especially when it can get away with lumping similar bits together. Those branches are one case of being similar enough, and the grass on the ground is another. The latter is harder to spot the difference, but those branches are fine loose entities and cannot be clumped together without looking funny... or fuzzy.

The phone has an orientation sensor in it, so it could simply write the pixels in the correct order. But no... Apple encodes the picture upside-down or sideways and then sets a metadata flag that every other application and browser on the planet is supposed to read and then rotate the picture EVERY FUCKING TIME IT'S DISPLAYED, instead of Apple simply writing it out right-side-up ONCE.

    • @pipoluca
      @pipoluca 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because HDR was on while those pictures are made. Means High Dynamic Range, I don't know if the phone decides wether to use it or not per photo or if it needs to be selected manually as I don't own an iPhone. Pretty sure it just means the picture has a larger colour space, so the colours in the picture are effectively richer.

    Good video - HOWEVER - if image quality is important to you every side by side comparison of HEIC vs JPG I've seen on here clearly shows a loss of quality when using the smaller and more effecient HEIC, as might be expected, despite Apple and others promoting it as the superior format. If space is your priority, absolutely, you're better of with HEIC. If quality is paramount, you are clearly better off with JPG, despite all the supposed advantages, as visibly, in real life - these simply don't stack up.

  • @podborski

    This is not quite correct. HEIC actually has nothing to do with compression directly, it's just a file format, (HEIF, based on .mp4 container format) which allows to store image data compressed with HEVC codec (and this is where the actual compression comes from). You can even put JPEG compressed image into HEIF file btw. And one very important point is not mentioned at all in this video. HEIC allows you to do very many different things which other formats are not capable of. e.g. lossless cropping and transformations, Live Photos (similar to GIF but much better performance) etc. etc. So it's not only about compression.

    HEIC/HEIF is the image format that nobody needed. It is soiled in the same messy patent pool as its video equivalent HEVC.
    Use JPEG-XL (.jxl), AVIF or WebP and nothing else for delivery/web.
    JPEG is also dead and only kept alive by 20-30 years old editing programs that no developers bother to update anymore.
