    Hi Martina, great make as usual ! To solve your non-sticking problem, you should get some liquid clay, such as liquid fimo or sculpey bake and bond. You can apply a super thin layer with a brush on any surface and the clay will stick to it. It's perfect for mixed media projects or to make sure raw clay will adhere to baked pieces, liked your teeth and spikes !

  • @ondrejruzicka9686
    @ondrejruzicka9686 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You should get your hands on some wires with silicone insulation. Then you won't have to worry about them melting and shorting to something when they are heated. Also putting series current limiting resistor to the LEDs is a good practice. It is not necessary with coincell-type ones (they have high internal resistance), but with baterries like AA it is usually worth to consider. (eventhough UVs have high enough forward voltage to withstand this without, it is a good practise). Nice project.

  • @miasstuff1948
    @miasstuff1948 4 ปีที่แล้ว +211

    Just a tip on cooking the polymer clay, if you’re using your food oven, get some ‘roast chicken’ oven cooking bags from the supermarket and wrap your project in that (and close it up) so that any fumes don’t linger in there and mix with your food cooking. :) Another great video! Thank you Martina. :)

    • @illonavijverberg8822
      @illonavijverberg8822 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Actually I wouldn't do that... As long as the baking temperature doesn't go over 120°C there is no reason for the clay to produce any fumes. On the opposite, the bag might act as a kind of greenhouse and trap more heat inside, which my result in the clay not keeping the right shape or even burning, which will then produce harmful fumes that would escape all at once in your face once you open the bag, because you wouldn't know your clay is burning because the smell of the fumes is also trapped in the bag... Sorry, but please don't do that ! Just monitor the oven temperature with an oven thermometer if you really want to be safe, and let the over air out with the door open for at least one hour before baking any food, you'll be fine... You can even leave the oven fan on with no heat if you want to speed up the process.

    • @miasstuff1948
      @miasstuff1948 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Illona Vijverberg Thank you for your thoughts. I have used the oven bag many times and never burnt nor misshapen my projects - I make miniature busts - and it hasn’t raised the temperature inside the bag that I’m aware of, but then I work with very low temps as different types and thicknesses of polymer cooks at different times/temps and I use a layering technique. It has however made me quite sure that the polymer clay does release fumes at low temperatures as I can smell it when opening the bag (outdoors) and see the ‘foggy’ discolouration on the inside surface of the bag, consequently I wouldn’t want those particles sticking to the inside of my food oven surfaces. Of course everyone should do what is best for them, so if your system works for you I encourage you to continue with what you are doing, however I just wanted to share my experiences and make people aware that fumes (and fumes are particle based) are released during the process. :)

    Instead of placing the LED into the model you could use fiber from one "light bush" that have many thin strands of optical fibers.Just route the fibers through the model down to the base and place the LED and batteries in the base.
    You could also make dots of light anywhere on the model using more fibers.

    The best way to get rock texture is to roll up ball of aluminum foil and roll it onto clay or polymer clay. The best wire to wrap the aluminum armature wire is aluminum craft wire. Also for sculpture stone you can use foam sculpting blocks and sculpt-mold mix.

    If you ever worry about heat affecting LED's or solder, you could use fibre optic
    Amazon sells 'toslink' fibre quite cheap, but it's only 1mm and plastic, not great for a light pipe.
    The also have 'glass' fibre, little more expensive, but much better, you can remove the outer casing to make it smaller (fibre is 2mm)
    This means you could use different colour LED's, or even RGB led's ;)

    Your videos are always amazing, and for being your first dragon in polymerclay it was really great. I would like to give you some tips because I've been sculpting with clay for 5 years now, to get the fimo more sticky you can use fimo liquid, and to make the black clay more elastic and resistant after the cooking you have to mix it with the translucent color that is the number 014. Also if you want your wings to be indestructible and transparent you can use a thin layer of fimo liquid and put it in the oven to have this effect, that for me is really amazing. Have a good day, your videos are always the best :)

    In case you still are not as expirienced with clay - you can also bake it at a lower temperature for a longer period of time (i usually bake mine at 90°C for 35-40 Minutes) which not only could eliminate the risk of burning your LEDs and wires but also makes the clay a little bit more flexible, so it doesnt break as easily. Hope this helps you out the next time you use polymer clay!
    I really enjoy watching your videos - its so much creativity and somehow i feel like i really need to try making a diorama some day! ❤

    He looks so good!!! I'm kinda new to your channel, so if you have done this already, I apologize! But if you don't want to risk a creation in the oven (or at least electronics), I highly recommend looking up epoxy clay! it air hardens (technically chemical hardens, due to the reaction) but it is similar to both water and polymer clays in how easy it is to work with. Like a weird combination of both! Just be careful of its residue!

      The big difference I see between epoxy and polymer clays is that you have a limited time to work with epoxy, whereas polymer clay you can cover your work so that it won't collect dust, and come back to it later and it won't have budged. And also the price 😬

    What a fabulous dragon. It looks so real. You are truly creative and I love watching how you go from plans to the finished article.
    Wonderful. Thankyou.

    That was awesome, really well done. If doing another one an LED in the mouth to give the affect of fire about to come out, maybe from one of those flickering tea lights. On a separate switch maybe.

    The dragon looks really cool! I too have been toying with the idea of baking LEDs into some of my projects, and am really excited to see that they will survive it!

    I wonder if window screen would have been better for the wing skin frame.

    would love to see you do a more traditional dragon someday with thinner wings loved this one but with your talent don't think you would have too much trouble.

    It's so cool!!! I love that you used rocks for a natural texture and put them on the base. Whenever I sit down to work with clay, I have no idea what to make. 🙈🙈🙈🙈 You are so talented, thank you for always creating amazing art. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

    That's an amazing sculpture! Great job. The only thing that looks abit off to me is the bottom jaw. I think it's way too small in proportion to the top one and i don't think he would be able to close his mouth haha. Still amazing work ^^

    You could have used the aluminium foil as the ground for the LEDs as well. It worked like you did it though but could have made it easier and only needing one wire to connect the positive on the LEDs. Also in my experience using a wire cutter to take off the top of the LED can result in a crack reaching the diode making the LED fail. I tend to use my Dremel and grind down the top of the LED instead. Make sure to not breathe in the dust though since it could be rather bad for you.

    Next project, try metal window screen. You might also experiment with fusible fabric mesh but im not sure how it would react to being cooked 10 times
