Unfortunately the path to medicine is stressful and long hours. But, I can suggest debt free ways: 1) There are a few medical schools that offer free tuition (ie. NYU) 2) You can go to the military path, but will need to repay in years of service (HPSP)
go to Europe for med school, entrance is usually easier if you do your research, usually it is much cheaper than the us. you can go to public schools in the UK or Ireland (competitive entrance) , or eastern European and even Italy offer English medical courses. you can also go hardcore , learn a local langauge, and study in Germany or Spain ( I have met expats studying medicine in these countries so yeah nothing is impossible or even difficult). life and studies in Europe are not a piece of cake but I feel have less of a ''RISE AND GRIND'' mentality compared to USA medical schools. also medical school is stressful, BUT ANY UNIVERSITY IS STRESSFUL, I wish someone told me this when I Was young instead of brainwashing me into thinking only type A geniuses go to med school, it is not true, I swear the parrots I studied with (including me) I wish someone told me that...

I'm not sure what you mean by older. If you are 45 and is currently a MS4 applying to residency, you have the same changes as any other MS4. If you completed medical school 10 years ago, and is just applying to residency, then yes it significantly lower your changes.

I agree with you. Neuropathologist interact closely with the neurosurgeons, to the point, if a neuropathologist is not available, some neurosurgeons will reschedule their procedures
I am new path resident in Spain and I Don't Know How to handle residency. I go at 8:00 am and I go back Home to 20:00 so tired that I have no energy to study. Every day I have meetings with my supervisors and I feel shamed due to not to be able to study what They say to me
Hi! I am so sorry this is happening to you. 14 hour everyday seems long even for a first year resident, and it is completely OK in my opinion to just go home and rest after such long days. It seems a little unreasonable for your supervisors to expect you to spend time reading textbooks when you work those hours. My best recommendation is to talk to your peers and see if others are also working such long hours, and to talk to a more senior resident (maybe your chief resident). They might be able to give you tips on how to be more efficient or give you more insight on what is happening. I'm sorry I can't say much more without knowing more of your situation.
what're your thoughts on artificial intelligence possibly replacing jobs in the future? advanced image recognition could analyze a vast array of pathology datasets and come up with a diagnosis faster than pathologists. I just saw a TED talk with Dr. Sahir Ali entitled "A.I. vs. Pathologists: Survival of the Fittest"
I think for AI to recognize dysplastic tissues it has to be trained to understand the normal tissue, but remember each organ has different cells and stroma. Even though they manage they'll still need pathologist to evaluate the results

Hey there! Prospective Medical student here, I was curious if you could explain what it is that Pathologists actually do. Research into the topic yields little results, and I usually get information on “Forensic Pathologists.” Frankly, being a Pathologist sounds amazing, but I don’t think I have a grasp on what it actually is outside of the often cited “Forensic Pathology.” Also, I was wondering why average pay is cited as being around 300k, but specialized Pathologists have an income statement way below that (much lower than 200k). Am I just reading the CAP’s financial information wrong?

Hi Kai, Residency is always hard, but I think pathology residency is better than most. We have hard rotations (ie. Surgical Pathology), and we have some more relaxing rotations.

Hi Magda, there is no such thing as a stupid question. :) I think the closest to that would be to do Medical Microbiology Fellowship and try to focus on virology. I do not believe there is a specific virology fellowship following pathology residency.

I am currently finishing Clinical Pathology in my country (residency program here is way less demanding than in the US but surely I am more experienced and oriented than when I was a med student). I wouldn't like to lead a family where i didn't have a go for the ultimate world examination (usmle) so as to carry the regret for not trying to live the american dream (comme ci comme ca) but judging from your experience and here comes the difficult part how possible would a 32yo IMG be accepted in a Clinical Pathology residency program? How can I be sure that I will be interested in reading and interpreting slides all day . Unfortunately we dont have clinical rotations in pathology here.
My best advise is to do an observership at an place that offers clinical rotation. Pathology in practice is very different than what you are exposed to in 2nd year of med school.

You don't technically need one, but many community/private practices do have a preference for you to have done a fellowship or 2. That way you can offer specialized help for more difficult cases.

It really depends on how big the group is. In a large academic group, I only do 2-3 nights of call a month. The smaller the group, the more days it is.

Yes! There is no issue of applying to pathology as a DO, there are actually many people who do. You just need to prove your interest in pathology, like everyone else.

Most of the time we make a "to the point" diagnosis, but there will be times when a descriptive diagnosis is required.

It would be harder than an AP/CP program. Most people interested in CP only program are MD/PhDs

You definitely don’t need CP to do forensic pathology. AP is all you need.

The majority of pathology jobs are in private or community practice, where it's pure clinical work

Generally those jobs are in private practice or in community hospitals that does not do frozen
The most important reason you didn’t or didn’t want to mention is that pathology is almost least competitive, therefore almost easiest to get matched.

Yes it is. A good chunk of pathology residency spots are filled by IMGs. It will be very difficult to get into the very top tier programs.

It's a subspecialty of Pathology. It is a 1-2 year fellowship after residency.

No, pathologists do not have any in-house overnight calls. We do our overnights calls at home, and most can handled via the phone.

It depends on the program, as PGY-1, it can be anywhere from $55-70k. There should be a small increase in pay every PGY level gained.
