I dropped out of residency to work on my business full time. Always wondered if I should have done pathology haha. No regrets leaving medicine but I think it's really important people don't brush off specialties like pathology especially if patient contact burns you out after a day of work.
as a third year med school i do really consider pathology, less paperwork and less patient contact - radiology is although making a strong concurrent to pathology :D but as you said: this lot of sitting is scary
i remember my prof/mentor telling me that she took path because she could pick her time, as in she would go to karate in morning and start in evening till midnight. She knew someone who did like to finish in morning and would start at 4 am and go till 11ish. Basically they were saying that they have to work but they can choose their time as they wanted after training.
I've done intern year (Europe => undergrad medical degree), now doing a research degree (MD, 2 years) in basic neuroscience. Can't wait to go for path scheme, your videos make me very excited! Please continue haha
Could you make a downsides to pathology video? Please don't take this as an offense. Pathology is my favorite subject to learn but I want to make sure I don't regret doing the actual job.
Cindy, you really know how to sell your specialty. Maybe in another life you would have been a great business woman LOL. I'm contemplating going into Pathology now haha. As always, great video.
Haha, I think I would be horrible in business, way too much of an introvert. You should definitely consider Pathology! Please watch some of my pathology residency videos: th-cam.com/video/qGV7M-rBXe8/w-d-xo.html
I ended my medical school a year ago, which I have joined in the first place in relation to my passion and love to genetics, medical biotech and drug discovery. But obviously “medical school” meant to a great extent “clinical work”, while the above mentioned fields are much more covered in basic and translational research. In fact, I didn’t build any background in research that would support me applying for Phd or other research positions smoothly for one reason or another. My plan was to, prepare for the USMLE steps to get certified and do the residency in the US to build on my MD, and during or after the residency, I could figure my way out to these fields in research, and this also would give me the benefit of being a wanted physician, and not just a fund-based employee. My question , also regarding research along with pathology residency, is that " could i do basic or translational research along with pathology residency, will i have the time with residency work to achieve this, or it will drive me away from this?". This doesn't mean i will do the pathology residency as a secondary thing.
Yes you can do both, but usually such opportunities are only at the larger academic centers. You would want to the pathology scientist track, but you will be competing with lots of MD/PhD.
I’m very interested in oncology pathology but am concerned that I will miss patient contact. Are there any opportunities to interact with patients in this subspecialty?
As a pathologist, you can find a job without doing autopsies. However, as a pathologist you will be involved in grossing to some degree. From supervising PAs and residents in academics to doing your own gross in private jobs.
Do you think that as a pathologist, your personal ability to practice medicine disappears? If, let's say, there was some kind of emergency and you were one of the few doctors available, that you could act as a primary care physician or ER doc to a greater or lesser extent? If not, do you know how a pathologist can keep themselves somewhat sharp so that they can still offer medical treatment and diagnosis if the need ever arose? Pathology is very attractive
I still retain a lot of medical knowledge from medical school, can feel comfortable giving very basic medical advice to my friends and family. But if an medical emergency happens, I probably won't be much help.
Thanks a lot for the video. I’m a Nigerian medical student. I would love to be a pathologist. Done with both steps but couldn’t get a visa for a rotation. How else do I show my interest to the field while in medical school and during my internship year in Nigeria. I’m doing a pathology research here, is that good? What other things can I do increase my chances? Also, what are the chances of getting a job after residency?
The best way to show interest is to do rotations in the US, especially at academic centers. Job options for IMGs are more limited due to visa sponsorship limitations, but I am unsure of the details.
I can't say 100%, but I don't see why not if you have a strong CV for pathology, especially if you have been doing meaningful things since your last attempt
Hey Cindy! Great video as always! As an IMG is it possible for me to match in pathology residency if my year of graduation >2 years. What all tips can you provide for a successful match?

You should like a good person to go AP/NP if you come to the US for training.

Thanks so much for your videos. I want to do my residency in Pathology and your real life experiences keep inspiring me.
Go for it!
Best of all - you don't have to worry about putting in ANY medication orders!!!
Haha that is mostly true. The only exception I can think of is in blood bank, but I'm AP only so I don't have to worry about it ever again!

What’s the impact of AI on pathologists in the future?
This is exactly what I wanted to ask
I can't wait for AI to make my life easier. AI to report on MMR, HER2, PDL1, Ki67 index....etc
How I wish grossing wasn't as important as it is otherwise path would be a dream. There's something about handling dead tissue that's so eerie to me
As a pathologist, you can find a job without doing autopsies. However, as a pathologist you will be involved in grossing to some degree. From supervising PAs and residents in academics to doing your own gross in private jobs.
Great Video as usual. What kind of camera and lights that you used to make these nice videos?
I use my cell phone camera and a selfie ring light set up. Haha I wish I could use a fancy camera.

How we get huge job satisfaction in pathology??
I believe the most important thing is to practice in the subspecialty field that you truly enjoy. For me that's GI path.
Is there any difficulty getting a job after residency?
The job market now is great. Getting any job isn't hard. But if you have certain geographic restrictions, that does make it harder.
@@Baking_MD Is getting job in pathology difficult than Internal medicine?
Is it possible to match in pathology as an IMG If there is one attempt in CV?

Yes you can! Make sure you are doing something pathology related while you are preparing your application.
