I dont think people fully appreciate the testicular fortitude it took on his part to not only write this song but, make it the first song on the album. That was a big middle finger to the rest of the nashville record producers. He was sending a message! Man was it good one!
@@leahflower9924 he is pretty much just saying n telling ppl that hank Sr done it all different kinds of ways hank Sr done it his way just like waylon did it his own way however he wanted to
@@leahflower9924 He was just saying that the "rules" of being a country star of which Hank Sr. didn't FOLLOW but was the artist on which they were based were not going to be the way he did it. Just listen to the lyrics...now I'm writing this by memory and hopefully I don't get the verses out of order, but if so I think it will be obvious what verse I'm talking about Verse 1: He describes how the country music business had been the same way for years from how the records were produced to even how the stars dressed in "Nudie" suits, drove Cadillacs and generally played their part. He didn't have any interest in being like those who came before but instead just wanted to be himself. However, he knew that in order for that to happen, he believed that things would NEED to change. Verse 2:. He described what those in the country music business had been saying to him since he arrived in Nashville . He sums it up that he didn't have trouble finding those who believed he would be a star but it seemed that almost all were only on board if he played by the rules which had governed Music Row for decades. Verse 3: He described what he had been dealing with for the past ten years and how it was not easy to be playing one night stands every night watching his youth "speed" by which he meant both figuratively and literally. In other words it is very easy to not really accomplish your personal goals when you are being burnt out with what he essentially felt was "busy work". In his autobiography he described how booking agents didn't have targeted plans for what an artist's touring should be accomplishing. They didn't even think about common sense routing plans. He felt like they picked the dates they set out for him were picked by throwing darts at a US map while blindfolded. The money was just enough to keep them working all the time spending the majority on overhead. I can't prove this necessarily but I do believe the "speeding" line also alluded to how there was only one way to tour that way and it was with chemicals. This was the reason Hank died at 29 years old and I'm positive that Waylon who was in his mid to late 30s also knew this which only solidified his belief that it had to change. Verse 4:. He further describes what life on the road has been like and how he even sings Hank's songs sometimes (as he was a huge fan) but he knew that he performed them his own way. The song was meant to be holding a mirror up to Music Row for them to realize that although they may think he was a simple minded hillbilly who should just shut up and do what he was told, that he was far more intelligent than that. He not only understood their games but knew that he would have to change the rules to their rigged games to finally win. ...and he did.
I don't like country music too much, but I really like Waylon because he always did it his own way. His live shows were excellent. He was a pioneer in his genre.
I'm from the north east of England in the UK where there is no tradition of country and western music and to be completely honest i am not very knowledgeable either, but my word Waylon Jennings just gets me where it counts and his crossover revolutionary style gets me on the deepest level. God bless Waylon!
I have a DVD- CMT presents American Revolutions "The Highwaymen" where Waylon does this song on the Jack Clement TV show. I can't find it on TH-cam anywhere. If you haven't seen it before, you would like that version of the song also.
Is that off the jack clement show from 1975? If so that would be totally awesome since Clement produced that song. Probably even better than this, which is hard to imagine!
It's that beautiful, maverick-bangled last line: "I think he did it like he wanted to..." The song symbolizes the American Dream, the possibility of constructing a self and fighting to realize it, no matter how lost the cause.
Lord it's the same old tune, fiddle and guitar Where do we take it from here? Rhinestone suits and new shiny cars It's been the same way for years We need to change Somebody told me when I came to Nashville Son you finally got it made Old Hank made it here, we're all sure that you will But I don't think Hank done it this way, no I don't think Hank done it this way, okay Ten years on the road, making one night stand Speeding my young life away Tell me one more time just so I'll understand Are you sure Hank done it this way? Did old Hank really do it this way? Lord I've seen the world with a five piece band Looking at the back side of me Singing my songs, one of his now and then But I don't think Hank done 'em this way, no I don't think Hank done 'em this way, take it home
I hadnt thought about it before. But, then I realized it was true. Its such a funny line: "Lord I've seen the world with a five piece band Looking at the back side of me".
Agreed. I personally believe he is the greatest pedal steel player to ever walk among us. This video is an incredible audio podcast dedicated to that master of the pedal steel Ralph Mooney! th-cam.com/video/P4ZXmhNA-FY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=FW0iHvexPGyUW0Q-
“This is a song I wrote in ten minutes. Took me ten years to think it up though.” Waylon is in the pantheon of Badasses. His Nashville years are overlooked to me too. The Outlaw stuff is epic but there are some early gems too. He was a badass from day one 😂.
I never get tired of listening to Waylon, or watching his performances. Wish i could have seen him live but i was just a kid when he did most of his touring. I'm thankful for the videos of his concerts on youtube. Thanks for posting.
Sure glad Ken Burns put this version on the documentary. Best live version I've found yet. Now whoever runs Waylons youtube channel just needs to release this whole concert, fully restored, like Willie just released his ACL Red Headed Stranger concert from '76
I agree they need to release more of the full footage of Waylon. There seems to be a pretty tight grip on whole performances and interviews. There's lots of short clips, would be nice to see the entirety.
Waylon had the weirdest, coolest sounding guitar I ever heard. I don't know if it was a joke or not but I heard him say in an interview once that he thought someone had pissed on it & that have it that strange sound lmao
Theee BADASS of Country music. AND that ol boy on that pedal steel guitar is very, very, good, whats his name. Waylon Jennings was the outlaw of country music, Johnny Cash's buddy,,, my Gawd was he good.
Everyone had problems either one time or another in the good ol days too... But we knew how to handle it and what would be the best for family... We didn't fall to pieces like they do these days... Family is what country is about really.. And waylon is the definition of true country... True in everything he did.. Was.. AND will always be
I grew up on this music my father's brother had a band he tried the Nashville thing it wasn't in the cards for him but boy could he sing now his son has a band called After The Raine
For my well actually personal and the love for my country and those who have fought and protected our landmarks and landscape, i believe that we are suppose to alway LOVE AND HONOR AND RESPECT and if we fall short pray for soneone who will be willing to give you an olive branch to help yourself up and do not hurt or harm anyone to get to safety by yourself. We should always want to show and act as if HUMBLE MEANS MILLIONS
Who still listening in 2024
HELL YEAH!
Woke up unusually early today.
This song was on loop in my brain. Haven't heard it in years. My childhood creeping up on me.
Hell never stopped.... LoL
October 30, 2024
Nashville disappeared a long time ago
You're right...and they did it to themselves
I dont think people fully appreciate the testicular fortitude it took on his part to not only write this song but, make it the first song on the album. That was a big middle finger to the rest of the nashville record producers. He was sending a message! Man was it good one!

it had nothing to do with testicles! but yes! :)
Such a strong saying... it took me 10 minutes to write this song but took 10 years to think it up
Since 64 he’s been around. His career took off around 73. Guess that’s what he meant.
There is just no mistaking that voice.
Or the music.
I'm black and PBS country music brung me here. I really like Waylon Jennings.

Waylon is for everyone! Glad you've discovered how great he was.
you have great taste in music.
Color shouldn't matter.
Welcome aboard!🙂
I don't like country music too much, but I really like Waylon because he always did it his own way. His live shows were excellent. He was a pioneer in his genre.
How in the holy hell did we go from this to Luke Bryan?
Stupid people, that's how.
People forgot that you can tell Nashville to fuck off
AJ Bowen I was about to type a similar thing hah
Heaven to hell in my ears opinion
Luke Bryan is gay
"Ten years on the road making one night stands, speeding my young life away"- Waylon the true outlaw of country says it all.

Waylon was the best. And still is.. Mooney on the steel is phenomenal.
Ben Z Agreed !
7 years later and this comment still holds water
Looking like John chavious
No steel player I know of can match the style and artistic excellence of Mr. Ralph Mooney.
I'm not American, but thankfully my parents record collection was. Cheere. This is brilliant.
Waylon Jennings is my Favorite Singer still, and one of my Heroes! And that steel guitar is some serious shit...!
I'm pretty sure that I have heard every version of this song and I can tell you from experience that this is the best one

The song symbolizes the American Dream, the possibility of constructing a self and fighting to realize it, no matter how lost the cause.
I agree!!!
I am standing on the front seat of an old buick next to my grandpa in 1975!😊 whooo hoo!
Lord it's the same old tune, fiddle and guitar

Rhinestone suits and new shiny cars
It's been the same way for years

Singers from 50s to early 90s . Best. Period.
No one cooler than Waylon!
Hank did it like he wanted to and so did Waylon!
Except Hank’s wife was driving him crazy!
One of the best songs ever. I love Waylon. They dont make music like this anymore.

A true Waylon fan!! Gets a 12 pack & some old Waylon tapes and sits on his his trucks tailgate, and if nobody joins him, he doesn't give a FUCK!!!
I hadnt thought about it before. But, then I realized it was true.
Its such a funny line:
"Lord I've seen the world with a five piece band

Wow what a voice. I remember hearing this riding with my Dad in his 75’ Chevy 4x4 when I was a kid.
That pedal steel man is a master

The worst part about old country is the 2 minute songs. Another verse or two and we could've been enjoying twice the song.
LOVE IT!!!!
