She is such a consumate Sondheim performer--she makes sure to act the part instead of just singing or performing it. Fabulous!

She is indeed extraordinary. She aproaches each song as a scene. And has the voice to do it very well.

Saw this at Chichester and it was just so perfect!
Her attempt at an American accent is way better than Patti LuPone’s attempt at an English accent. (I love Patti, honestly, but her accent in Sweeney Todd is - not great. Her belting is fantastic though, as always!)
I mean, isn't half the point of Sweeney Todd that theyre all sort of caricatured characters of a Guignol Penny Dreadful thing?

She was great. She really deserved that Olivier Award for her performance.

All those comparing her to Midler, Lupone and Merman are completely wrong to do so. She takes a completely different approach to mamma Rose. Something more manipulative and subtle.
Don't you get tired of X is better than Y! isn't the joy of performance that each talented Artist brings there own style to a role... I loved her performance - is it the the best - who am I to judge... it was just brilliant!!
I don't know if uh subtle is the word I'd use lol. But I like her take on the character.

Why is it in these recordings it sounds as if they've cut the guts out of the orchestra?
Because it’s a live stage performance from the West end and they don’t spend as much in orchestras in the UK. West end theatre ticket prices are pretty much half that of broadway so they don’t have anywhere near as much to spend on musicians. I should know, I am one sadly.

O man I wish I could see her in a musical play. She's also received accolades for Into the Woods and Sweeny Todd. She's Sondheim's British muse.

She sings it well, but she needs to work on the staging. Given her long and illustrious career, it's kind of surprising she doesn't have better blocking and stage movement. Makes me wonder who directed this performance.

Sorry, but Staunton’s Rose is pretty standard stuff and she doesn’t bring anything new to the role. She’s not bad, but I expected magic.
I can assure you that, on the three occasions I saw this live, she was magnificent, moving, subtle, brash, kind, hard and determined. One of the greatest West-End performances I have ever seen and I have been attending regularly for more than 40 years.
I normally like her, but I do NOT like her in this role.
As the show was a sold out run and she won the Olivier for it....seems a lot of people did....
@@jonldn So what? Good for them. I don't like her in the role. I also didn't like her in Follies. I like other work of hers, but I didn't like her in this. It happens. It is an opinion.

I have an opinion. Anyone is welcome to disagree. It is a public forum. I don't want anyone to "bow down" to my opinion. I just think she was a bit manic in the role,, which is also why I didn't like her Follies. It is a matter of taste, and that is all there is to that.

You had already said this. The Gypsy score was beyond her abilities. Also, live theatre is so unlike movies. Imelda was outstanding in this play.

@@christiandoyle7783 But Ethel Merman could sing! George Gershwin admired her voice. So did Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and Rodgers and Hammerstein.
Merman, Lansbury, Midler, and LuPone were all great. But Staunton is great as well.
