Saw the original West End show back in 1980 with Dennis Quilley and Sheila Hancock. I was absolutely blown away by it. But I think it only ran for a few months. British audiences weren’t ready for the very dark undertones which was revolutionary for musical theatre at the time. I’ve never seen this performance before and I’m super impressed with both Ball and Staunton. Bravo!!!
In her acceptance speech for winning the Oliver for Gypsy in 2016, she said Sondheim had been her "champion for the last few years" and that "Sondheim is the Shakespeare of Musical Theatre and I got to sing his speeches every night. 2 astonishingly brilliant performances in a fantastic production. We all knew Michael Ball can sing and play the charming hero but here he is superbly cast against type and his pairing with Imelda Staunton is perfect. Their singing is the most tuneful of any pair, their diction impeccable with not an ounce of meaning lost, it's almost as if, despite the rhyme and music, it's a natural conversation - albeit between 2 very disturbed people descending into psychopathy.
This was the most amazing experience at the West End! I feel so proud that I got to see this production and both Imelda Staunton and Michael Ball were superb! I was spellbound from start to finish! I really wish the whole cast would consider putting this on blu-ray. They were all excellent. The set was fascinating with its style and how the space was used. I wanted to see the show over and over again. Everyone involved should be so pleased with the end result. Theatre at it's best
Wow, seriously, who is this guy? Bellatrix, Umbridge and Trelawney all have a crush on him, Grindelwald rescued him from a shipwreck only to fall in love with his daughter later, and he is also the one who killed Snape and Pettigrew with just a razor, then threw Bellatrix, Umbridge and Trelawney into the fire... He seems even more dangerous than Voldemort, and that's saying something. xD Update: And now he is revealed to be an old and very frightening GRINDELWALD in Fantastic Beast, ahaha. No wonder he is so dangerous. xD
I have to say, I have heard a lot of versions of this song, and this might be my favorite. Their voices blend extremely well on the harmonies. Love Michael Ball as Sweeny...
So brilliantly underdone that it really allows the comedy in the lyrics to come out. This version seems to combine the darkness of the Lupone version with the eccentricity of the Lansbury version. It is rapidly becoming my favourite.

Bravo!!!
90% of comments: jokes about umbridge
10%: compliments
-Potter?
-Something... hotter
Malfoy, perhaps?
SCREAM
I think my girlfriend liked this so hi
Thank you
You're welcome, dudes
are you russian?
I love, love, love Micheal Ball!!
Man i wish there was a full DVD with Michael and Imelda. They're amazing
Imelda has a way with Sondheim. She is simply superb singing his lyrics no matter what the role.
In her acceptance speech for winning the Oliver for Gypsy in 2016, she said Sondheim had been her "champion for the last few years" and that "Sondheim is the Shakespeare of Musical Theatre and I got to sing his speeches every night. That sorta makes you better." She performed in Gypsy 8 shows a week for 8 months and never missed a performance.
Their enunciation is astonishing, so much more understandable
Shepherds Pie with actual shepherd.
This is honestly the funniest thing I’ve seen today
I understood every word! How refreshing. I know it’s slower, but their diction skills are amazing. They really rely on their consonants.
i just love imelda staunton. and michael ball.
the BEST duo for these roles
Oliviers awards well deserved!!!!!
I was lucky enough to see these two in London. Fantastic is an understatement.
I envy you seeing this. But am happy for anyone to be that lucky.
She makes this so original, so much her own that you can't take your eyes off of her waiting to see where she goes with it. Impressive.
Wow wow wow!!! I am utterly speechless!!! Had to keep telling myself that this is Michael Ball. Totally loved this!!!
I love this so much I would die and be baked into a pie for a full recording
Michael Ball has the fucking CRAZIEST of crazy eyes good lord
Imelda Staunton my beloved, god she pulls this off so well
I didnt even recognise Micheal when he came on stage lol. His performance was absolutely chilling. Absolutely crazy and unhinged. Imelda has a wicked evil streak in her portrayal of Mrs Lovett and I love it.
Imelda is an icon! Such a killer actress 👏 🥰
Such a phenomenal production. Deserved a much longer life than it received.
These are seriously the best duo I've ever seen do this and in been absorbed in this play since I got the album over 25 years ago. Just wonderful!
Ooh....ooooooh I think this is my favorite Sweeney & Lovett duo!!! His face when he "gets it" is * chef's kiss*
This has just made my year! I constantly play this soundtrack I’m gutted I never got to see it.
I honestly perfect this prefer performance, because they nailed down the crazed casualty of what I think this would be. Best I've seen 👌
It's actually chilling how *lighthearted* this song is...until you realize what they're really singing about...
I think it’s pretty obvious
Wow, seriously, who is this guy?
Bellatrix, Umbridge and Trelawney all have a crush on him, Grindelwald rescued him from a shipwreck only to fall in love with his daughter later, and he is also the one who killed Snape and Pettigrew with just a razor, then threw Bellatrix, Umbridge and Trelawney into the fire... He seems even more dangerous than Voldemort, and that's saying something. xD
Update: And now he is revealed to be an old and very frightening GRINDELWALD in Fantastic Beast, ahaha. No wonder he is so dangerous. xD
+Zoticus Lestrange OMG! You are my new best friend XD XD
The complication between this musical and the Harry Potter cast is just too intense to be ignored, eh? xD
+Zoticus Lestrange Well, obviously, he's the estranged grandson of an aristocrat in Louis-Phillipe-era France
+Zoticus Lestrange It gets even weirder when you throw Mrs Potts and Borat into the equation.
+Zoticus Lestrange Trelawney had a crush on him too :>
Saw this in London back in 2012. It was fantastic! I'd only seen the movie version before, and this was honestly much better.
I love these two together.
Nothing has ever made me want to see Sweeny Todd until this clip. That's Michael Power!
I have to say, I have heard a lot of versions of this song, and this might be my favorite. Their voices blend extremely well on the harmonies. Love Michael Ball as Sweeny...
This song is so long, yet it entertains all the way through, I love it!
So brilliantly underdone that it really allows the comedy in the lyrics to come out. This version seems to combine the darkness of the Lupone version with the eccentricity of the Lansbury version. It is rapidly becoming my favourite.
They are both absolutely amazing!!! My god!!!
I would love to see more of Michael Ball & Imelda Staunton in Sweeney Todd.
I've seen the show live but never saw Ball & Staunton in these roles before.
The 2 vids posted have me wanting more. God that's good!
I love how I’m jamming out to this while they talk about literally eating people
You can really feel them sharing in the insanity in the version, I like the atmosphere they create very much
For the ones that don't know, in the original song, Mrs. Lovett says "Potter" (: it was a big coincidence. Jajaja
Whenever I see "jajaja" I picture a German wildly nodding
+Caro ❤ Kind of like how "She's the New World Madonna" was already a line in "Evita" before Madonna was cast in the movie. Although I think they cut that line in the movie.
Jajaja yes she says that lol
Thank you so much. I've been dying to see some sort of footage of Imelda and Michael. This is fantastic!!
Michael Ball’s Sweeney doesn’t even need the razor. He looks like he could just crush you with his bare hands lol
I wish they released the whole performance video, this seems like a lot of fun.
Yes, the dimples are still there... I love Michael Ball!
Miss Staunton may be my favorite Mrs. Lovett.
wow, what an interesting take on the song… every word was clear to hear, and no word overlapped… showcases their acting chops… bravo
Michael Ball looks so different here unbelievable
The diction is amazing. And these people seem...real.
