My friends don't understand hamsters. I was excited today, telling them all about the care of hamsters and they said I was over reacting. "You don't need to measure the cage!" "The store will tell you everything about the species!" "What? Next you will be worried about the hamster's ball!" Okay guys, whatever, I want to treat this hamster right.
I just got a dwarf Russian hamster named Mocha and I was worried about handling her. But after waiting 5 days and talking to her often whenever she is active she started coming over to where I was and acting very friendly. I then started petting her gently in her cage. and she is very sweet! she has bitten me twice but I think she was just seeing if my fingers were food. 😀 my bf held her and let her play in his lap while I cleaned her cage the other day and she was actually climbing into his hands and letting him pet her. So I think we lucked out and got a hamster that was already pretty mellow and tame! we love her so much 🐹🐹🐹❤❤❤ we will try the bathtub idea to get her better use to being held! thank you so much!!!
also my hamster had a cage with tubes and a 2nd level she refused to use and was also staying in her hut a lot. we removed it and she became more active just like you suggested in your video 😄
I have an amazing hamster! The first time I got him he climbed Right into my hand. Literally the first day. He is my first hamster and he is a Syrian "teddy bear" anyways he likes to be flipped over and gets tummy rubs and sometimes when I give him A tummy rub he grabs my finger and licks it :) he I so sweet! His name is stitch I got him in march :)
R.I.P my beautiful little gerbil who passed over the rainbow bridge this morning, on the 23rd may 2014.... rip my baby girl...😭🐭wish i could have given you one more sunflower seed...
I'm sure you get this all the time, but you are GORGEOUS. Also, I just adopted my hamster today! He's a six-week old black and white long-haired Syrian. I'm so excited and giving him a week to settle in before I take him out of his habitat. He did come hand tamed, but I can tell he needs time to adjust to his new living space. Your tips are so helpful, please never stop making videos!
Sumatra is such a cutie in this video and makes a great model :) Very cute and his coat comes out very shiny on camera. Such a great video filled with so many great tips. It is definitely very hard to leave your hamster for a few days to settle in because of their cuteness but you just have to remember that it is going to help so much when you are able to cuddle them. I think the tip method you have come up with is amazing and it is definitely going to help a lot of people. I think people rush things way to quick with hamsters because they don't understand how stressful it is for them, even just being in a new room and having different smells. It was quite weird for my hamster, Spice, because he had been living with his siblings so when I got him home, he was completely alone which made him a little more wary of me. But we are slowly getting there and I am definitely going to use the tips you have said! Thank you for this amazing video Hannah and I can't wait for the next one :D
Ooh, new video! :D Oh my goodness yes! Tips + Talk = HoppingHammy awkwardness--my favorite! ;) Oh yay, cute clips! :D Or um, "yayes" I should say. :P Eeeep! Nu! Sumatra, stop with the cute, seriously little guy! xD Yes, it's a camera. Silly boy. :P Aww! Nom nom nom little Gingersnap. :D It's so hard to concentrate on what your saying when there's so much cute hamster-ness! LOL! xD Yes, tip one is definitely an important one. I agree 100%. :) Wait…. whoa. *pause* Is that…. *squints*… is that a, a *Frozen* comforter I see back there…? :O I just now noticed Elsa! LOL! xD I want one now. xD Anyway, Sumatra has the cutest bear face ever.
you say you are not an expert, but there is so much logic and knowledge in your advice! i am happy to see how much you consider your hamster's preferences and feelings when dealing with them. you're a really sweet person and i can see your hammys love you. :D thanks for the great video!
A whole 8:39 of your channel-perfectly edited including the cutest clips and the most useful advice ever!!! I find with one of my roborovski he likes to come out and play but I have to tempt him onto my hand because he always hides away he is quite jumpy but once he is out he loves running around on the floor in a closed off area or on my bed between my legs! (I had to start taming all over again when his brother passed away because he was out of his mind!) im sure with this advice I will get him onto my hand no problem without him feeling scared! Sumatra though he is sooooooo beautiful!!!! And that little pink nose sqqqquuuueeee!!!!!! i just want to cuddle him so bad he is absolutely adorable and I bet his personality matches I love little gingersnap its a shame he doesn't really like being held but im glad he is in your care because not many people would respect that he doesn't like cuddles! Great video very informative! xx
Great tips Hannah! ;) little Sumatra looks like a coffee bean :) ginger snap is so small, I'm glad that they've warmed up to there home! :) how cute!! I just made a hamster hideout account :) and it has sooooooo many great instructions :) I see why u recommend it :D Also I already know how to tame and take care of my hamsters, but I can't help always watching ur great adorable videos XD :D ~ Lana :)
I'm so glad I found this! I got a hamster yesterday and he is just so shy and nervous; he jumped out of my hands and it terrified me. I thought he would never like me. I'll definitely be implementing these tips, thank you!
my hamster did great :) he's so cuddly and I am too so he's perfect! I know he's friendly because whenever I put my hand in the cage he'll try to climb up my hand and up my sleeve xD
I've been caring for, and writing professionally about hamsters for a very long time, but I just discovered your videos. In all that I've seen your advice has been excellent and your presentation superb. Wonderful work, good luck with it!
My hamster, Oreo, I just got him a few days ago and the second time I tried picking him up to show my friend he bit me so hard I bled.. But I am fine now! And I think Oreo is guilty because he acted as if he was tamed ( I didn't tame him. :P ) ! And now I can easily pick him up and pet him in his cage without him biting me. Tehehe.. :3
I am sooo crazy excited because my mum who was previously so intent on not getting a hamster and wouldnt listen when I talked about them and just would not budge has told me I can get one after the easter holidays! Shes even gonna pay half of the costs so now im rewathing all the hamster taming videos and all that good stuff.
Aww little Sumatra at the beginning :') super cute! I agree with everything! Amazing video! So informative and interesting:) I used the same method for misty. Funny enough she used to hide in her tubes (she had a critter trial and bin cage originally) and never come out so I had to take them away for taming - and now look at her ;) Looking forward to the next video :) xx
Thank you so much hoppinghammy, I am getting a hamster for Christmas so I am making sure that I have all the correct rearch first. I am so exited of having g my new hamster I'm naming Boris, you have been a great help and I have watched nearly all of your videos, I will be reccomending you to everyone :) thanks x
Is it weird that only after a week with my hamster she is already coming to the door for me to take her out, and doesn't mind me handling her? I heard it normally takes more like 2 weeks, yet again she is very curious and sociable. Maybe that could be why? Not that I'm complaining, I love to play with my Charlie. XD
I agree!! I have recently bought a Syrian hamster called Holly, she has settled in fine and has become really tame! If u have also just bought a new hammy then the longer u leave it to settle the better!!!
I breed many hamsters, so I took a break because I saw 2 runts in one litter, so my snake ate all of the baby hamsters except 1. The mother's name is Tux, as her coat looks like a tuxedo. She was a very brave hamster when she was a baby, and she LOVED people. But she got out, and she is slowly loosing my trust, but I am getting it back! The runt's name is Talon, because his feet look like talons, he is calm, but he is wary of me sometimes. I recommend using the same soap when you are ANYWHERE! So the hamster gets used to your sent, and touch everything in their cage when you wash you hands, it makes their home smell like you! *This video is very helpful, and will probably help get Tux's trust back!* -Also, Tux's mom (Gobstopper) is very calm with me, and will even run up my arm, I have had her for a year, Tux for about 6 months, and Talon for around 2 months.
this vid is soo informative! im so glad i found this, ive only had my hammy for a week now and ive been trying to pick her up and what not and its been very hard, she will run all over me and try to jump out of my hands, its terrible and now i see why, cuz ive been trying to progress way to quickly! my hammy is starting to noice my voice cuz when i talk she will turn her head and look at me and start sniffing and after watching the vid i did the food part from my hands (not the palm of my hands yet) and she took it out of my hands! i was shocked that this actually works, i was starting to feel a bit discouraged like she didnt like me or was anti-social. but seeing her take the food from my hands gave me a lot of hope, i am so glad i found this video! definatly bookmarking this so i can use it as a reference for the next upcoming steps. thank you so much for making this video! it brought back the hope to keep trying with my hammy.
Thank you so much! Now I know how to tame my hamster. I just got her today and she's a Robo Dwarf Hamster and she doesn't let anyone touch or hold her. This helps me know that I have to go with slow steps until she's comfortable😁🙂☺ I could not thank you enough!
Hey +HoppingHammy ! I know its unrelated to hamsters but you should try a right sided part in your hair :3, You don't have to keep the look but its just a sugestion :)
TurkeyFeather Aj Thanks for the suggestion! :) Sadly my hair has a mind of its own and it automatically parts on the left side. If I try the right side, it just sticks up funny and reverts back to the other way. Lol!
I recently bought my hamster about 4 days ago and I tried giving him a treat by hand and he just climed on my hand and hasn't bit me. Like little Yodel, Benji, my new hamster is a long haired Siryan. Anyway, thankyou so much for all the time you take to help other people. You've helped me tons!!!
You are pretty and your voice is so sweet. Thank you for the tips. I just got my new hamster 1 day ago, hope he will be comfortable around me next week. If not, I will just wait.
Oh boy! *Gets comfortable* Her we go! *Clicks play* I can tell this is going to be awesome! :D Oh my goodness, is that.....*GASP* a Frozen blanket? :O :O :O *FA-ROZEN!* xD I could be wrong but it looks like it. :D Aw, Sumatra! *Boops pink nose* You are just too cute!
I have two dwarf hamsters at home and my parents surprised me with a syrian hamster yesterday! X she is settling in nicely and maybe in a week and i can start some of your taming tips xx
This was the most helpful, informative video I've found so far! Thank you so much! I just got my 2nd Syrian hamster, I named her Cleo. She is all brown and the cutest little thing. I'm going to start taming her tomorrow. Thanks again!
your my hamster expert ... also ... u say not to pick them up for about 1 week but all of my hamsters love me even though i picked them up after about 20-24 some hours.
Great video, Sumatra looks like he is coming along nicely! Theodore doesn't enjoy handling too much although he never bites I believe he find it very scary so I try a keep it to a minimum, Great tips x
Help me!! URGENT!!! I my Syrian yesterday and I left him on his own in a quiet dark room nearly all day, the I out my hand in to refill water and he cam right up to me and sniffed me, he then went back into his nest. Then a bit later I was walking by and he got up and started looking at me curiously. I Then gave him a few treats and he was completely comfortable with me and took the treats without hesitation. Then today I thought it would be a good idea to hold out my hand flat he came right up as usual and bit me, so I thought maybe he had just missed it or thought I was food as I forgot to wash my hands. I then washed my hands and rubbed my hands in the tissue, then he started eating it!! Or maybe pouching it... I'm really worried and confused as this is my first Hamster
Good tips, especially about being patient and not forcing your hamster to do things he/she doesn't want to do. I've had mostly robos, which probably have a reputation for being the most skittish and least "cuddly" hamsters, but for anyone thinking of getting a robo or anyone who has just gotten one for the first time, I'd like to add that even if your robo never lets you pick it up, it doesn't mean that you can't have an affectionate relationship with them. My most affectionate robo ever, Fifi, took A LONG time to get to that stage but it was worth the patience. She did not like to be picked up -- so I didn't put her through that -- but she loved being up and about when I was up and about in the room (she'd come out as soon as she heard me and go back in her nest when I left the room); she liked it when I sat next to her and talked to her and interacted with her and straightened up/cleaned her bins (and she clearly understood that I could fix things so she'd sit calmly while I fixed things she had toppled over or when I'd clear a jam in her wheel etc); and she liked to sit in my palm while eating treats (especially when shelling sunflower seeds) and would sometimes even curl up and fall asleep in my hand afterward (as long as I kept my hand IN the bin) so don't think that just because your hamsters won't let you pick them up it means that they don't like you or that they can't be affectionate in other ways.
*T-shirt crawl!* I love how Sumatra comes out from underneath the flying saucer! I nearly fell out of my seat laughing. *Ohhh it's moving!!!* Very nice tips BTW. I think it will be very useful for new time hamster owners.
i tamed my hamster, and he is amazing at doing tricks. he can jump over shelves, and can tunnel like a pro! he is SUPER kind and gentle, and hes a short haired syrian male. im lucky to have him because he doesnt smell and can do impressive tricks without treats! im so proud😆
my hamster is taking a bit longer than expected on taming but it's too do with both of our confience in handling, but that's fine ;D gingersnap is the cutest little hamster ever! when he was sat in your hand my heart melted at how small he was🙈
Thank you! It is humbling and I'm so proud of him and how far he has come. :) I only wish that Gingersnap's past experience was not so bad. He's still very nervous and un-trusting, but at least he does take food from me and seems happy. Thanks so much!
I'm sure Gingersnap will eventually get there, I'm addicted to your videos and have been ever since I got my first hamster a year ago last week :) It was actually you and the care you give to your hamsters that inspired me to create a hamster channel :)
Thanks to this video I have gotten her confident enough to walk up and grab food out of my fingers without hesitation, time to move to walking on the hand to get the food
You should post a photo-shoot video!! I've seen your tutorial one but you should a full video of you filming your two adorable hammies in different punchi backdrops, eating yogurt drops and playing with cute toys c: I love your videos so much
I just got 1 Chinese dwarf hamster today! I had 2 last year but they ended up dying, the man in Pets At Home said you can have one as long as you play with it. Thank you for the tips! It helped a lot, I named the hamster Charlie, and it hasn't bite me yet! :-)
I have a question, actually. So, I have had my hamster for almost 2 months now. He's a Teddy called Murmel, german for "marble" and will be 4 months at the 18th April. He's from a breeder for longhaired Goldhamsters. He is also my first hamster ever. I tried to read up as much as I could before getting him and was quite nervous of making mistakes while getting him used to my hand. But after a week he would already pull treats out of my fingers and when I read to him every evening he'd run over to the left side of the cage which is right behind my pillow (sometimes I wake up with nuts in my hair, too) to just sit until I was done. Now he is running left and right over my hand, he even licks it from time to time. But I still use hamster taxis, because he is so energetic, he'll find a way to squeeze through almost anywhere he wants to. I nearly dropped him once because of that, it's something I would NOT forgive myself for if that ever happened. Now, before I go on to my question, maybe something about his personality I've discovered with time. Before I got Murmel I read that hamsters are naturally very nervous and jumpy, which makes sense considering. So I was prepared for biting and giving him a lot of space. However. If there ever was a fearless hamster, Murmel would be it. The day I got him and I put him in his cage the first thing he did was stretch and yawn before proceeding to head right over to the food and water pots, which is how he grew up. (we tried a water bottle at my parents house. Somehow this little rascal managed to get the ENTIRE contents of the water bottle over his cage interiors. Luckily none on himself. So never doing that again, don't want him to get sick!). He also spent almost all his time climbing around the cage (I made it fallproof beforehand) instead of digging which I gave him enough bedding for though. Now, after 2 months He's already walking head down on the ceiling for minutes. The first thing he did after getting him was stay in the area around me, too. and when I get him his treats now, sometimes he'll grab my Pyjamas and just look at me. Honestly, when I do things for the first time, I feel like I am wayyy more stressed than he is. Actually, in the 2 months, I have not seen him stressed once. I feel like I'm the only one who'll die of a heart attack because of this little rascal! The one thing with him is though, and I don't know why that is, is that he ONLY comes out right now when the lights are out except for just one little light next to his cage (can I change this habit somehow? and if, how?). One thing I've noticed though is, that he doesn't seem interested in going outside of his cage. He won't run away or anything, he'll get in the taxi at some point, but he'll quickly jump back in waiting to go home. He doesn't chew on his bars really either, and he doesn't seem discontent. He just doesn't care much for exploring a foreign area. If you put him in one, sure he'll explore, but besides that, he doesn't seem to need it? I mean, he reminds me of myself, he seems like the "whatever" type, but, did any of you have similar experiences? of hamsters being uninterested in exploring for the most part? And how can I make exploring more interesting for him? I mean, it's cute how he'll be a little tense when he can't see me but will loosen up when I start talking to him. Or how he'll not drink when other people are in the room except when I start talking and telling him he's okay. It kinda shows that he trusts me at least a little, maybe? But I really want to get closer to my little buddy :) can anyone give me any tips? Also. Funny thing, he likes pulling on my curtains. I constantly have to gently take them out of his paws like:"noo, don't do that, it's 4am and you're making a total ruckus!" then he just looks at me all innocent, then proceeds to pull the curtains while I facepalm.
When I was a lot younger(with my first ever hamster!) I put a treat on my finger tips then slowly moved the treat up every time (with a different treat) and I found it worked really well! That hamster was one of the best hamsters I ever had and she was very, very tame. I don't know if it will work with your hamster but I just thought I would leave a tip😊
I might be getting a hamster for my birthday and I think these tips are very helpful! I just subscribed to your channel today and to be honest I love hamsters!!! I never had one before so if a do get one for my birthday day it would my first experience to these tips are super helpful thanks! :)
Great tips and anxious to start the taming! Do you feel there is a better time of day to start the training? In the afternoon when they have been asleep, wake them up and start or wait until they wake up on their own around 9:30PM? When they wake up on their own, it's kind of late to train. What is your opinion? I have two long hair Syrians, one black and one brown and white. Of course, they are kept separately! Have had one for about a month and the other I just got on Saturday. The black one loves to come and get the sunflower seeds but I haven't tried to pick him up yet. Thanks!

That's nice, but you should have been more careful with your snake. >:(
this vid is soo informative! im so glad i found this, ive only had my hammy for a week now and ive been trying to pick her up and what not and its been very hard, she will run all over me and try to jump out of my hands, its terrible and now i see why, cuz ive been trying to progress way to quickly! my hammy is starting to noice my voice cuz when i talk she will turn her head and look at me and start sniffing and after watching the vid i did the food part from my hands (not the palm of my hands yet) and she took it out of my hands! i was shocked that this actually works, i was starting to feel a bit discouraged like she didnt like me or was anti-social. but seeing her take the food from my hands gave me a lot of hope, i am so glad i found this video! definatly bookmarking this so i can use it as a reference for the next upcoming steps. thank you so much for making this video! it brought back the hope to keep trying with my hammy.
Great tips! :)
I have a new hampster I'm ready to pick him up but I'm not sure how long to hold him for
You are pretty and your voice is so sweet.
Watching this in 2020😂😂😂😂😂😂😅
see i love your channel so much because alot of youtubers are angry during their whole video for the smallest reasons.
I'm gonna get one on my birthday this December XS
This was the most helpful, informative video I've found so far! Thank you so much! I just got my 2nd Syrian hamster, I named her Cleo. She is all brown and the cutest little thing. I'm going to start taming her tomorrow. Thanks again!
What if you are scared to tame them
thanks hopping hammy for the tips today is day 1 for me i got my hamster on Sunday and cant wait to start taming him on friday! :)
your my hamster expert ... also ... u say not to pick them up for about 1 week but all of my hamsters love me even though i picked them up after about 20-24 some hours.
Great video, Sumatra looks like he is coming along nicely! Theodore doesn't enjoy handling too much although he never bites I believe he find it very scary so I try a keep it to a minimum, Great tips x
It's good that you respect his personality and don't force him to interact. :) He always looks so happy in your photos and videos too!
Help me!!
Thanks for all the tips Hopping Hammy! I'll be getting a hamster in about a month or so and this was very helpful!
My robo hamsters are new and they haven't touched their water bottle why
you should have more subscribers. You are the best youtuber in the world

Very helpful video. Sumatra is soo cute and has come so far in taming!!!
Your videos help A LOT! Im convincing my parents to get me one. ( its working so far!) And taming them is a big step. So keep up the good work ;)!
Such good tips! I really look up to you on hamster advice and everything about my hamster! Thanks so much for looking out for our hamsters!

my hamster is taking a bit longer than expected on taming but it's too do with both of our confience in handling, but that's fine ;D gingersnap is the cutest little hamster ever! when he was sat in your hand my heart melted at how small he was🙈
Adorable footage!!♥♥ and great video!! Glad TH-cam finally let you upload lol :)
This is great! My hamster has followed all the tips now all that's left is to let him climb into my hand!
Sumatra looks so happy and settled in! Considering his backstory, that's even more amazing and humbling to watch
Thanks so much!! After watching this, I did everything in this video and now my hamster loves me!! Thanks so so much! :D ❤️❤️
Very well organized video. Great job!
Thanks to this video I have gotten her confident enough to walk up and grab food out of my fingers without hesitation, time to move to walking on the hand to get the food
Thanks for all the tips!
I think you are an amazing expert Hammy.
You should post a photo-shoot video!! I've seen your tutorial one but you should a full video of you filming your two adorable hammies in different punchi backdrops, eating yogurt drops and playing with cute toys c: I love your videos so much
I'm so excited! I'm going to get a hamster tomorrow and name it hammy!!
Hi hoppinghammy your video is great and the tip about rubbing my hand in the substrate really helped!!!!!!!
The first clip of Sumatra is sooooo cute!!! :)
But I really want to get closer to my little buddy :)
can anyone give me any tips?
Also. Funny thing, he likes pulling on my curtains. I constantly have to gently take them out of his paws like:"noo, don't do that, it's 4am and you're making a total ruckus!" then he just looks at me all innocent, then proceeds to pull the curtains while I facepalm.
I got a hamster yesterday and he's fine with anybody petting him and he's really cute and sweet
For me I only waited a day because she absolutely LOVES to be held and pet
Hannah that was a very cute video and a the end he climbs up that's adorable
Wow Hannah, this video is so helpful! Thanks for the great tips! Sumatra is adorable!!
Thanks!
This was amazing i adopted a little hamster and did the same things and it liked me ! this really helped!!
That ending was so cute xx
