Hi guys! :) Today's video is another serious one. I am talking about the true "costs" of pet ownership and how it oftentimes requires us to make sacrifices, in various ways, in order for our pets to stay happy, healthy, and to ensure they have everything they need to thrive. The points mentioned are some that can apply to any of us, and also some that I have personally experienced. What are some of the ways YOU have made sacrifices for your pet's well-being?
Oh! And massaging and giving medication every other hour. That sacrifice was less hard on me than the money. Because the massaging and giving medication was fuelled by love and I could handle. But the unforseen very expensive vet bills made us make even more cuts on our own food (less fresh etc).
I really love these topics you’ve been doing since I haven’t seen really anyone else do them and they are important parts of becoming a pet owner! It also was really fun to see some of my pets featured in your video! 🙈
Brilliant video! Not many people talk about the sacrifices that come with keeping pets, it's really nice to see important topics like this 😊 Travel is my big one, I'd love to be able to go on holiday but I only travel when I absolutely have to because it's so hard to find reliable people to care for the animals (and I hate being away from them). The last time I went away was in May 2017 to a siblings wedding. I couldn't imagine not having animals around though so it's completely worth it 😊
Thank you Erin! 😊 It's nice to hear from you and read your experiences on this subject. You're right, even though traveling and holidays is a happy thing, it's also tough to be away from our pets and the routine of seeing them! We get so used to having them around, it feels weird to not have that responsibility when going away. I hope you're having a fantastic 2019 so far!
We usually find someone who can live in our home when we are away. It's really expensive but then I know someons is here to monitor their behaviour as well as feeding them. It's not impossible it just takes a lot of extra funds in our base
I appreciate your serious videos - I think it's sometimes easy to forget what goes on behind-the-scenes when we mostly share the good, or happy care videos on TH-cam. I think it's quite sad when a new owner resists sacrifices when they first get a new pet, it's heartwarming when they change this point of view as they fall in love with their chosen pet but until that happens it can be frustrating.
Thanks for your comment, Rattatea, and that's so true! I suppose sometimes people don't know what they're getting into until it's too late. Even when it comes to bringing home a new hamster, for example, many people are recommended to leave the hamster alone to allow it to settle in, but some don't have the the willingness to do this simple thing. Pet ownership really does requires us to put the animal's best interest at heart before our own. ❤ It's something we can all continuously strive towards doing. :)
I've given up a lot for my 6. I got a phone call just over 1.5 years ago about a bird needing a home and now I have 3 birds, a hamster and 2 gerbils. All adopted/rescued. I'm very sick so I've had to give up other aspects of my life to care for them, but it is worth it. 💕💕 I've spent thousands of pounds on all 6 of them. 😂 I've given up non stick cookware, hair tools. I've given up going in my front room after 9pm. lol I've given up pretty much my entire front room to 4 enclosures.
Seeing your past pets was a privilege and this video is so important. When we give the best to our small pets they pay us back ten fould. It's worth it but has to be for their sake. Seeing our precious pets happy should be our up most priority..learning is caring
the biggest sacrifice in pet ownership is the immense pain you feel when they leave but knowing that all the good times and joy they bring is worth it and that youve given them a good life
👏 Well said! I've done the four hour medication administration throughout the night, many times sadly. I've said on so many occasions, if you don't have the space for a large cage, then don't get a hamster. Same goes for money. Vets are expensive, as is bedding and a good quality diet. I also don't burn scented candles, even if they are in a different room, hamsters have a strong sense of smell. I would add that owning a pet is time consuming. I spend over an hour each morning spot cleaning cages, washing dirty wheels, sieving or changing sand baths, and washing and filling water bottles with fresh water. After work, I spend time getting all their food ready, including fresh veggies or salad, which my hams get daily. My elderly hams get porridge, as do unwell hams. Then each of my hams comes out for free range time, one at a time, every night. They all have their own individual floor toys, which are set up on the floor and put away inbetween each hamster. I then make sure all their beds are clean, change any bedding that needs changing, wash any beds that need washing and give everyone shredded tissues for bed time. It's all time consuming. It doesn't matter how busy I am, how late I come home, or how tired I am, it still has to be done. I don't necessarily see it as a sacrifice as I choose to have hamsters but I think it's important for people to know that it takes time and money to care for them. All my hamsters are rescues, some of whom have come to me because their previous owners hadn't taken that into consideration. Thank you for making this video. I hope you and Kashi are doing well. X
I worked at Petsmart for 3 years prior and even I thought it was too expensive to own a hamster plus the time you have to put to keep their habitat clean! I’m glad you are the voice of these fluffy babies !! Just because they are small doesn’t mean they are cheap :)💜💜 love your makeup !! Your eyes are so pretty and big !
I have two hamsters and if i hear people say they are cheap pets i just laugh. Their setups are expensive! And now i’m kicking myself a little because i am not sure i want to keep hamsters after these two pass but i’ve invested so much money now in hamster supplies that now i am torn but i’ll cross that bridge when i come to it. I agree that it is a misconception that they are cheap pets to own!
I loved this video. Yes, unfortunately I haven't owned a hamster in a while as school became stressful and then my father really, really loves taking me to concerts. It's his absolute favorite thing to do, and it's nice to get away and spend some time with him. I have to put owning hamsters on the backburner right now, but maybe in future I can own them again. I of course still love them and think about them every day haha but it wouldn't be right for me to get one knowing I may go out of town without anyone to pwoperly care for them, and studies and work also take up time. Good and important topic, and I love the production of your informational videos; the clips of your hamsters, the title cards, the transitioning, and the sound. 👏😁
Pet ownership does require sacrifice.Like if the owners find them self in a bad situation and suddenly don’t have enough money they might have to rehome that hamster. Or if your going on an airplane to move they might not be able to go if their elderly because it could stress them out.
Alexis Yates I’ve had to do this. When I moved out of Minnesota I was lucky to find a family where a girl was very responsible and old enough to take care of him, and they lived on a farm and had a huge play place for him to roam!
I love this video; it’s so important to bring awareness to these things. I never ever go away with all of my animals, it’s hard for us to even go away for the night. But I love having them and wouldn’t have it any other way! We have to spend the night out tomorrow and I am paying someone to come hang with my gang and care for them while we are gone
The biggest sacrifice I have done for my hamster is give her away. I had her for a year and 3 months suddenly my apartment caught fire and thankfully Peach (my hamster) was the only let I had. So I grabbed her and ran. All her toys, cage and food was burned. My wallet was as well. I had insurance to buy another house however peach would be far to stressed and most certainly get wet tail. So I made the decision to give peach to someone on ebay. I was giving her away for free since I need her a new home fast. A man named Damian offered if he could have peach for his 2 little girls. I ,Of course, tell him thank you so much. I was so happy because the cage he had was as big a hoppinghammys cage! Also, his girls were so well behaved and patient with peach. I have found a new home and am living happily I still wonder what is happening to peach.
I really appreciate your serious videos because the world needs them. The world needs to know that not everything is fun and games...especially pets. Everything you said is all so true! (Oh and btw, I have a small pet channel if anyone wants to check it out!) you and the small pet community ,like Tori, Erin...ect, are my role models and I want to be this successful one day (: so excited for when I am older so I can open my own pet shop with real hamster care 😁
I agree! Most people don’t understand how much hamster care may cost, and are not willing to spend, and make the hamster live in just a terrible situation, because they are small and cheap, don’t live long,etc...
Hi HoppingHammy i love your videos so much and you give such helpful info. At first with my hamster i had a 10 gallon tank for him and i used to wake him up to play i was not the best owner now after a couple months i have a SUPER BIG cage and now i dont wake him up i put a good amount of bedding and good food too. And you have helped me do that thank you so much! And now we are bonding much better he takes food from my hands he loves to come and play and im so glad. thanks! + the video was good also no one has done a video abou this! :)
Wonderful video! I now have 6 guinea pigs, I started out with 2 or 3, but seeing a few beauties I just couldn't pass up has now brought the total to 6! I have to put money aside each week, as well as shopping for veggies, bringing them home and storing them properly so they stay crisp and fresh, cutting and giving them out twice a day, and that's the easy part, lol! I enjoy doing it so much, but then there's the every night cleaning, which takes me about 2 or more hours in the evening! Just replacing shavings, putting down new fleece, washing and drying fleece, cleaning litter box areas, going through hay to throw out some and keep some that's not soiled, the list goes on and on! I am going to try to set up my enclosures a little different so the cleaning might be less time consuming, but never the less, piggies are such high maintenance pets, as are so many pets. I enjoy it, because I get to interact with them too, but it's a tremendous responsibility!
Thank you for sharing!! This is such an honest and true comment about pet ownership. It sounds like you stay busy! :) Piggies are definitely high maintenance. That's why everytime someone tells me to get guinea pigs and make care videos with, I'm always like, "No way!" 😂 They are precious though.
Hi Hopping Hammy how are you doing today fine I hope. You are so early today. It's nearly 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Thanks so much for sharing this video with us it was so much fun to watch. Pet's are a lot of sacrifice. Normally I would have think about myself now I have to think of 2 pet's. It makes me have something to do everyday looking after them. I've never had any pets before apart from when I was a kid we had dogs and cats. But now I have to take care of them myself. But I really do enjoy taking care of them they give me a purpose in life I wouldn't do without them. It was so nice to see Kashi and your pass hamsters. You are such a great pet owner. And lovely sweet person inside and out. Now you have a great weekend and I will see you soon. Beauty and Ginny are doing well well take real good care of yourself and Kashi and lots of love from Jackie Beauty and Ginny lots of love from Jackie xxxx
Hi Jackie! Thank you for your comment and for sharing your thoughts and experiences! You are SO right that pets can give us a purpose and that taking care of them can make our days feel worthwhile. :)
They are totally worth it... Every second every cent ... Everything our sleepless nights and other sacrifices. Yes...also the room temperature. But, I loooooved hearing them at night. I miss that. Another sacrifice was stopping being crepuscular myself. Like with them I had to turn off the lights and be quiet at night to avoid disturbing them.
Space! I live in a tiny studio apartment and I definitely had to sacrifice space for appropriately sized cages for my two Syrians and my bearded dragon. My cages are all DIY and pretty large, so they do take up a significant amount of space in my apartment. I gave up the spot for a desk and just do all my crafting on my bed or couch. I wouldn’t have it any other way, though!
HoppingHammy I learned it all from you! Years of watching your videos and seeing your cages and hamster care inspired me to do the best things possible for my babies.
You did mention this but SLEEP! I come home from work late as it is sometimes but sometimes my hamster doesn’t wake up until 1am or so and so I can have bonding time with him I stay up.
Preach!👏 I hate it when people refuse to take their small animal to the vet. A life is worth more than the amount of money you pay at the vet! (Also the internet is not your vet)
HoppingHammy Thank you so much for being here to educate people on hamster care! Hamsters are very misunderstood pets and we are so lucky to have people like you to help educate the world on proper hamster care. 😸😸
thank you for being honest ^^ i rescued my cat when she was a week old as her mother didnt come back for her. had to give her cat milk every few hours and monitor her alot. i got a few hours of sleep a day then went to school but shes the best thing that happened to my family 💗 now we rescue animals on a regular basis. ❤️
Oh wow! From what I've heard, raising baby kittens and bottle feeding them requires such a big commitment and sacrifice! I commend you for that and I'm glad the kitten survived and thrived! ❤️ So sweet that you rescue!
Thank you for making this video. 💕🐾 I've made so many sacrifices in the past year while owning a hamster and rats. One of the big ones was giving up space in my room . Somehow, by myself, I managed to rearrange my furniture in order to fit my cages.
My hamster does this thing where if you leave it alone it stays up for a hour and then goes to sleep but when someone is in the room it stays up for 10 minutes and will hide or go to sleep i find it really funny 😂
Hi...i think it is very good of you to make this kind of video s so people know the things they have to deal whit if they are taking a pet. One thing is for sure ..you are a wonderful pet owner.
Thank you Clo Tay! 🤗 Personally I think that hamsters can be either, but I've always heard of them as being nocturnal. It's only until recently that some believe them to be crepuscular. In my own experience though, my hamsters always seem to wake after dark and are in bed far before light, so I consider them as nocturnal. It's okay if you believe differently though. 💕
With this years tax return, I had really wanted to get new speakers for my truck as they were blown when I got them, however my cat Ferb crashed and I instead used all of it towards vet bills. It happens! But my animals are family and did not even hesitate!
I had a dwarf hamster and when we went on vacation we left it with someone who has a ton of experience with animals I believe it should be someone that knows what their doing not a family member that just gives them food and water. Great video 👍🏻
Travel is such a important thing that is not mentioned enough. I got my hamster in the horrible no research situation (that got fixed a while ago) and I never thought that leaving would be a problem. But as a kid I go on vacation either way and I feel horrible because there is no one I trust to do more than feed and refresh the water in her dish.
This video I can relate to so, so, much...I have to give up a whole window-sized corner of my room for my handmade tank (5-6ft long), I have had to give up new collectors Items I REALLY wanted cause I needed to buy my $50 bag of rat food for the month, Getting harassment from my job for having to schedule vet appoints off for "just a hamster" or "just a rat". Rodents and all animals alike are a huge responsibility no matter the species.
Omg I’m so glad you uploaded, you just made my day, also I have a question my hamster is very old 2 1/2 years but will absolutely not let me touch her,is their anyway I could try to tame her? (Btw she’s a dwarf)
Gwendalynn Alvarado I would leave her alone, trying to tame her or pick her up could stress her out which is very bad since she is so old. It could cause her to pass away sooner.
Hi Gwendalynn, I would have to agree with the advice that Azrael Michelle posted. For hamsters who are older and still not tame, this can be a lot more difficult than taming a younger hamster. Some hamsters just do not enjoy human attention or being handled and they never come around to liking it. They just want to eat, sleep, and be left to do their routine. I wouldn't worry about taming at this point and would just let your older hamster live a stress free life. :)
I prefer this kind of video to your other like "Play" ones they educate me more, I own Hamsters and I have a Large Cage which takes up half my walking space, I choose to sacrifice that... I love hammys :D
I'm glad you liked the video and thanks! A lot of people do prefer watching informational / educational videos over the fun ones, but I much prefer doing the creative or fun videos. They are more my passion and gifting. :) That's sweet that you have a large cage and didn't mind giving up some walking space for your hamsters!
Uhhh ive watched this twice now. trying to think of something i might be able to add. But youve said everything everyone must know. Although, i find it important to mention that we are in control of how much a hamster costs per month. If you have the basic things, cage, food, safe bedding and toys. You can make it as cheap as possible. But you can also make it as expensive as you want. A hamster doesnt have to cost 10 dollars per month. If you have food and lots of bedding and a big cage with many toys, then you will be able to keep the cost very low for at least 2 months maybe. You can choose to buy toys and food and things for your hamster every month, making it more expensive. But you can also just keep it to the basics and it wont be that expensive. It also depends on the kind of bedding you have and prefer to use. I use hemp bedding which is very cheap. But it can last a few months with spot cleaning. And one bag can be used for like 5 times maybe. Depending on how much you use of course. Its mostly the vet costs that people need to think about and of course when something breaks like a wheel, that it gets replaced. Ive at least spent 1000 dollars on hammy stuff even before i got my first hamster. Hahaha. I sometimes buy things that are necessary, but also things that are not necessary. It depends on what your goal is with hamster. Do you only want a hamster because you like to have animals, or do you want a hamster and also like to decorate the cages a lot. Its up to us how expensive we want to make it. The most important costs for a hamster will be the vet, the cage, bedding, wheel (hopefully one time purchase), some toys (but you can also only use diy toys out of cardboard which probably costs you nothing at all) and proper food. If you dont want to go bigger than that, then its fairly cheap. But the space is also important. To keep in mind that your hamster need a big cage. But sometimes even with a big cage, ive experienced that my syrian hamsters want to escape a lot, so i had to buy something so i could make a playpen for them. I could also just ignore the fact that they want to escape and want to have some time out of the cage and just let it be, but i decided to buy something for them so they are happy. Free roaming in a safe environment can also help. But be sure you have the space for a proper cage. Im not sure why im typing this. Im not good in story telling. Im just rambling. But youve really done very well explaining the responsibility as an owner for hamsters. But it can also be used for many other animals. I dont have anything else to add. Long story short, as long as your hamster has the basic things it needs, its okay. You can always decide to go bigger and better! At your expense! Thanks for making this video. I never really realized that i sacrificed anything for my hammies haha. I know i wont be able to go on vacation anymore like i used to. But im an adult now, meaning i can stay home if my parents want to go on vacation. I never looked at it as something that i would miss. Especially now that i moved to Spain, i dont think ill have the need for vacation as much anymore haha. Im sorry you had to wake up multiple times at night to give one of your past hammies medicine. That would be very tough for me since i have a sleeping disorder. But if it necessary, then i must do it. And also the space, it never felt as a sacrifice. Maybe because i did 2 years of research before getting my first hamster. I had been planning to get a hamster for so long. And i couldnt wait to get the detolf cage. I knew what i was getting myself into, and i loved it. And i still do. So it never felt as a sacrifice to me. I think 70 percent of all my stuff, is for my hamsters hahah. Have a nice weekend😘😘 now i gotta go to the other video and answer your question hahhaa
Wow, you typed SO much! I wasn't expecting that when I opened your comment. 😄 Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences for everyone to read! I do agree that once you have all of the necessities and a proper cage, it really isn't necessary to buy much else besides bedding and food. I think a lot of people (myself included!) ended up spending much more than needed because of starting out with a small cage and upgrading (many times) along the way. Had we just started off with a large cage initially, it would have been better. Also I enjoy buying things for themed cages, but for most people this really isn't necessary, like you said. It's too funny thinking of you with a whole apartment and 70% of it being hamster stuff.....but at the same time I SO RELATE! 😂 😂 😂 Have a nice weekend too!
hahaha sorryyy my thumbs have a mind of their own sometimes! Hard to stop hehe!🤣 im also very good at repeating myself multiple times. Cant help it😅. Yes well maybe ill come with a new percentage when everything is out of boxes lol! 🤣 maybe its less maybe its more
I have a very overweight hamster (Englebert Humperdink) who falls on his back a lot and can’t get back upright. I check on him every hour or so day and night to see if he needs help. I’m home all the time which is good. He’s been to the vet, so I know he’s not 😷 sick. He’s old now. When he’s gone, I can at least know in my heart that I did my best for him.
I am one of Courtneyluvstosing fans from tiktok and her TH-cam channel I saw your comment on her last video Courtney is a absolute sweetheart I just subbed to u also your hamster is adorable
Allergies!!! I am allergic to my four robos. I don't want to let them go cause life wouldn't be the same without them. Also, it can be hard work doing full cage cleaning.
Oh yes, how could I forget this point! That's so good to mention and I'm glad you did. Whew, I can only imagine how bad your allergies must be with 4 robos. My allergies acted up with just 1! I found Robos to be the absolutely messiest and stinkiest (but also so adorable lol!) little critters ever!
@@HoppingHammy the wheels get very messy & smelly fast. The male is hardest on his wheel. His 9in Silent Runner wheel is about worn out. I'm ready to take a break from animals after my robos. See if allergies improve. Thanks for mentioning candles & noise levels. I'm going 2 have 2 clean my bedding I'm hot water weekly too cause of dust mites. Maybe get an air purifier. They r so expensive tho
Getting an animal you must always know you WILL have to make sacrifices. I won $40 for something I don't feel like explaining it and instead of pocketing it or buying stuff for me that's fun, I bought my mice and bunch of new things along with there food. I used all of it. But I get to see my mice happy and it makes me happy. They only live about 2 years so make those two years great. Another time was when I got a puppy! We rescued her from my abusive cousin (she's 22). She ripped up alot of my stuff, (including some of my mouse's food, treats) I just bought those yogurt drops too! Anyway I had to make sacrifices of some of my stuff to make my puppy happy (she's almost 6 months now knows how to lay down and sit, she's a good girl)
The heat thing I'm the exact same it's winter by me and I refuse the heat. I dont know I just like to be cold. I'm worried that when I get a hamster I'll have to sacrifice it. But hopefully my spare bedroom will be able to get tempature just fine.
If you have a spare room that your hamster is in and you aren't sleeping there, you can get a mini space heater for that room specifically. That way you aren't heating the whole house if you don't want to. That's what I do with my office is I have a mini heater for Kashi, then I shut my bedroom door and keep that room as cool as I want. The newer heaters have thermostats you can set to ensure it doesn't get too hot (also a concern). I still recommend checking it often though, just to make sure it hasn't malfunctioned. It's an extra responsibility you'll have to keep up with, but that's an option for you if you don't want your own room to be hot. :)
I’ve found it’s important to make time to engage with your hamster even if they hesitate. Just a few minutes each day serves well to keep them friendly and connected so they’ll be used to ppl to some degree and not become totally withdrawn. I personally have found my one of my hamster’s main delights were the treats I would bring when it was time to play or at least engage with him :)
(Disclaimer, I don’t mean physically necessarily but even your presence is good enough I’ve found so they don’t feel completely isolated, if your hamster is already used to human presence or contact)
I can understand what you mean and Kashi is this way too! :) While she isn't fond of being taken out and prefers to stay in her home, she LOVES the treat I give her every night when cleaning out her glass jar. I always like taking time to talk to her and do basic interaction. I will admit I've had hamsters in past who literally could care less about me - LOL! They just wanted to be left to their own, but talking to them is always nice. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! That's sweet that your hamster enjoys that too. ❤️
HI Hopping Hammy I ❤ Your Videos But I have a question on my hamster food diet. Is it okay if I feed my hamster 3-5 Oxbow pellets, mixed with Higgins Sunburst. But should I add half of a MAZURIA Rat and Mouse Diet Food? 🐭🐹. And then 2-3 times a week I can give my hamster, some fruits and vegetables.
I have a lot of health problems and go to day hospital. I'm always tired and not feeling great. I also can't get a job because of my health issues, so most of the money I get from my parents, which is meant to cover my clothes, school supplies and bus tickets, goes to my 4 mice and 5 rats. Most of my free time goes to taking care of them. Cleaning cages, making them cage items, replacing worn out items, socialising and trying to stop them from destroying my clothes and furniture. I only buy clothes from thrift stores and don't eat out or go to the movies much, so I can save money for their supplies and vet fund. I've sacrifised a lot for them and it's sometimes tough to find the time and energy to give them all they need to be happy, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
How often do you have to change the cage in the larger cages you showed like the detolfs and such?? Like you just change the bedding and sand ? How often do you have to feed them like keep the bowls full ? Or will they eat too much ?? I’ll look around your other video to see if you explain lol
The time investment is a BIG one, especially if you have a large habitat for your pet. I can easily spend an entire afternoon cleaning my hamster's Detolf.
I have no filter talking about money and pets, it helps new owners budget and know if they can afford a new pet. I would love having you come and me and say "hey, if you had a hamster, this would be your bill". I decide I might figure that out fostering
So I have three dwarf and one Syrian and they are all in large bin cages. Would it be okay for me to stack two of them if I put holes in the side of the bins to provide ventilation? Would that be healthy and safe for the hammy’s? It’s getting pretty crowded so I’m trying to come up with ways to maximize space! :)
Hello! Nowadays there are so many hybrid dwarfs, it can be impossible to say for sure. Unless you get a paper from a breeder, you most likely have a hybrid. These are a cross of a Russian Campbell and a Winter White. :) Sometimes they can have closer qualities and appearance to one species more than the other, but somewhere down the gene line it most likely is mixed.
My parents go on holidays twice a year, we have three dogs, gerbils, hamsters, fish tanks, six cats, two rabbits and two pigs. My brother and I stay home to care for them all.
There are MANY people who deeply appreciate you not wearing colognes and perfumes!! It causes respiratory distress for many people. We can't breathe, we feel like we're choking. Our allergic reaction to perfumes and scents can make us have to even visit the hospital. It's worse than BO. Thank you for not wearing it. 💖
That's really sad to know that some people have reactions to scents too! :( I've noticed that many doctor and other offices nowadays have signs asking people not to wear any scented perfumes or colognes. Some of the fragrances people wear can be SO strong, they give me a headache too! I can only imagine how it is for animals. Thanks for sharing your thoughts! 💖
@@HoppingHammy It's worse for animals. I have a cat and I know he's more sensitive than I am. He and I live a dye-free, scent-free life in our house together. Love your channel. Such a happy place. 💖
Me too! I have 2 dogs, a cat, a cockatiel, 2 guinea pigs, a rabbit, an anole, and a goldfish (soon to be two). My dream pets are a tortoise and a ball python ♡
That's a very good point about not playing with them during the day! Great to mention! I do think most hamsters prefer to be sleeping at that time rather than being woken up to play, so that's definitely something hamster owners should keep in mind.
Wow...im first yayyy^^ oh btw...can you help me with my hamster ? She is a campbell dwarf if that matters So she is like 1 years + of age and her eyes have been kinda half closed some moths after i got her but i was an idiot and even putted her in a 130 ish inches cage( she have it wayyyyy better now tho dont worry) so...i have tried all what i can to have her eyes open widely again i have read on the hamster Hideout forum that it might be because of some respiratory problems which i think might be the reasons because i used to give her a small corner toilet filled with this vitapol chinchilla sand and i just recently found out it was too dusty !!!! Anyway do you think i can fix this ? I have read a topic of taxonomist that thyme may help and im thinking of trying that out... i just want to ask you because idk...i just want to be secure of course i will also do research on different sources of information first. (Sorry my english sounds like an eight years old but...)
Hi there! Did this happen right after you started using the sand? What type of bedding do you have in the cage? Respiratory problems, generally, mean your hamster would also have breathing issues, make clicking sounds or sneezing, etc. It wouldn't just be shut eyes or sticky eyes. Is your hamster showing these types of symptoms?
Hello! I didn't know where else to contact you, so I assumed your most recent TH-cam video would be a good idea. I am starting a hamster treat business with one of my closest friends. We both have hamsters, and know the proper things they need. Such as foods, cage sizes, hideouts, chews, habitats, etc. I have been researching and owning hamsters for 2 years, which is nothing compared to TH-camrs such as yourself, but it is longer than most people. I taught my friend everything she needs to know about them as well using your videos and other hamster TH-camrs videos. I was wondering if you'd be interested in receiving a sort of "review package" from us containing some of the treats we will be selling. We just wanted to get our name out their somehow, and assumed hamster owners like you would be the perfect way. The ingredients list will be included, and we do use real fruits and vegetables. The "made on" date will also be included. Thank you!
I am very interested in getting a hamster! But I have a pet snake who is expected to get 8-9 foot long. I was wondering if it was still a safe idea to get a hamster?
I don't buy anything for me anymore it's always stuff for my rabbits but I did buy the rabbit for me so I did buy something for me lol 😁. I don't like going away so that's fine my mum isn't very happy about it but she knows I don't want to leave them. It's totally worth it
I think a big thing no one talks about with owning hamsters is the short amount of time you get with them they don't stay with us 15 years like dogs or cats we get to love them for a short amount of time and its heartbreaking.
You can give your hamster a sand bath, you can find special types of sand online or at a store. You should not give your hamster a bath with water because it rinses off the oil's on there body's and then they can get sick, i highly recommend giving it a sand bath and cleaning the cage more often 🐹🐭😁
Hi Zola Animates! Do you happen to have a female Syrian hamster? Female hamsters can smell every 3-4 days when they come into heat. This is normal, but if your hamster never smelled and suddenly stinks, that could indicate a health problem. There's also other reasons, like the comments mentioned, where it could be urine - such as if your hamster pees on their wheel and runs on it. I wouldn't suggest OVER cleaning the cage though. This is upsetting for a hamster who has all new scents, too often.
@@HoppingHammy yea my hamsters is a syrian and also a female i guess it is what you said but hopefully is not health problem to.my hamsters , thanks hopping hammy
Aw, but a kitten sounds like a lot of fun though! :) Maybe you will have another hamster in future? It isn't impossible to have a cat and a hamster in the same house, it just requires an abundance of caution and extra care to ensure your hamster's cage is secure and the cat does not have access. 💕
@@HoppingHammy thank you. That sounds weird lmao! But thank you for making me feel like I'm understood! No one else understands the pain of losing flurry. It really sucks. But thank you!
We love your serious videos! It is so true that any pet requires a lot of responsibility and sacrifice... but they are so worth it :) Please check out our Guinea Pig channel
Hi there im assuming you know a lot about hamsters so i have a question. I'm online and found a rabbit and guinea pig cage. It says 'suitable for the following breeds: rabbits, guinea pig' but I assume it's okay for a hamster. It also says 'approxiamte dimension (product).46 X 95 X 57cm. Would you know how much floor space this has and would it be suitable for a hamster? Here is the link to the cage in case you would like to check it out for further information www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/ferplast-rabbit-100-indoor-home
Hi Katie! :) I'm not sure if you watched the video all the way through or not, but this covers far more than discussing the monetary costs. Pet ownership requires a lot of other things too.
Yeah I have I understand I was just saying about people who sell there hamster because they can’t afford it once you have a animalyou should be committed to it they only live 2 -3 years and it’s sad to see as I have star my robo and he’s the besets most sweetest thing ever I think hamster are so misunderstood that’s all I was trying to say haha lol x
Ah okay! I misunderstood. :) Your Robo sounds very sweet. I have heard of situations where things change and someone loses their job or has other financial problems. I wouldn't want to judge someone else's situation, especially as any of us could end up in a similar situation. But it's definitely wise to budget ahead, save, and have extra in case finances become strained. ❤ Thanks for sharing!
HoppingHammy Great video! Even though I haven’t had time to watch it yet!
The noise and smell one really helped as well
I have made financial sacrifices because of vet bills. My hamsters were more expensive than my cats vet bill wise.
Thank you, and thanks again for letting me use your video clips and share that story! ❤️ 🙂 🐾
It’s crazy she watches you you watch her 🤔
:D you two are my favorite TH-camRs
Brilliant video! Not many people talk about the sacrifices that come with keeping pets, it's really nice to see important topics like this 😊
Travel is my big one, I'd love to be able to go on holiday but I only travel when I absolutely have to because it's so hard to find reliable people to care for the animals (and I hate being away from them).
Maya Sonya Yeah, I wouldn't trust them with my hammy. Tehy also wouldn't knoe my cats fav toys.
I've spent thousands of pounds on all 6 of them. 😂
I've given up non stick cookware, hair tools.
That's so true Debbie and even with the sacrifices, it's worth it! Thank you for your excellent comment!
the biggest sacrifice in pet ownership is the immense pain you feel when they leave but knowing that all the good times and joy they bring is worth it and that youve given them a good life
OOO A CARNIVAL CAGE THEME WOULD BE SUPER FUN TOO
👏 Well said!
It's so nice to see someone that cares about all the little things. There are too many careless or ignorant pet owners that need to know this.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this! :)
Last Thursday my horse was sadly hit and killed by car :( it been so hard but watching you’re videos help because you’re always so positive
Ashley, that's horrible to hear and I'm so sorry to hear that. 💔 💔 💔 I hope you are able to full heal from your loss.
HoppingHammy thank you! It’s been one of the hardest things to go though
This is so funny. I was just finishing my comment under your instagram photo! And then this video pops up😋
*waves* 👋🏼 Hi hi! 😄
❤️❤️❤️this really helps thank u so much ❤️❤️❤️🐹🐹🐹
I am glad it was helpful to you!
Aw, good for you! You sound like you have learned a lot and made changes along the way to better your hamster care. So awesome to hear!! 👏🏼
thank you i love your channel hoppinghammy and Erins animals and Victoria rachels too! you guys are my FAV youtubers!!!
Thanks so much for your sweet reply I really appreciate it very much thanks so much bye for now love Jackie xxxx
They are totally worth it...
Every second every cent ...
Everything our sleepless nights
and other sacrifices.
That's so awesome of you!
This is such a good video idea! This will help out so many new pet owners❤️
Thanks Kayleigh and I hope it does!
Preach!👏 I hate it when people refuse to take their small animal to the vet. A life is worth more than the amount of money you pay at the vet! (Also the internet is not your vet)
A wonderful and informative video, as always! I absolutely love your channel, it helped me very much when I got my hamster.
I'm so glad you've found it helpful! Thank you!
Hello Elsje! 💕 There are still areas I'm trying to work on, but thank you. :) I do hope this video is of help to people!
That was great information. It is important to know and to keep in consideration the needs of our pets not just ours. 👍🏻🐹
First!!! Glad you did this! Love your outfit! Super cute!
You just had to refresh It looked like I was first but I wasn’t
Thank you very much! :) Olaf for the win!
Such an amazing video! So many important points!
Also, hamsters are actually crepuscular, not nocturnal :D
Thank you Clo Tay! 🤗 Personally I think that hamsters can be either, but I've always heard of them as being nocturnal. It's only until recently that some believe them to be crepuscular. In my own experience though, my hamsters always seem to wake after dark and are in bed far before light, so I consider them as nocturnal. It's okay if you believe differently though. 💕
Syrians are strictly nocturnal. It’s dwarf hamsters that are crepuscular.
Funny! I was going to say that VR can’t come on vacation with us anymore because of her animals, and that was point #1!
Yes, Victoria was the first person who came to mind for this point! :)
I thought it was so funny when you mentioned hamsters being nocturnal as I’m watching this as my hamster Hazel as usual *loudly* runs on her wheel
I love all animals.😁❣ But not only snakes and pigs. 😅 Anyway, great info as always! ❤️
Thank you Denny the Budgie! ❤️
Space + Money were the biggest sacrifices I had to make for my guinea pigs. But I'm pretty happy if they're happy so it's NBD.
Thank you for sharing!!
Thank you for watching! :)
HoppingHammy thank you very much I will just let her live her life :)
Azrael Michelle thank you for the information:)
This a very informative video!!! Great job I remember when I found u out it was your room tour with yodal!!!
Thank you! And wow, that room tour was ages ago! Thanks for sticking around! :)
HoppingHammy no problem u are awesome and I come to u for proper hamster care
Hi
🤣 maybe its less maybe its more
Hmm, maybe it's actually 95% of your stuff is hamster supplies and you don't realize it? (The other 5% is your puzzles. LOL! 🤣 🤣 ) J/k!
@@HoppingHammy i dont have any puzzles yet lol! I think the other 5 percent are my clothes and toiletries😅
Hehe!! I'm just teasing you about the puzzles! 🤣
Hi Erin! Yes, Courtney is and it's so neat to "meet" you through her channel! Thank you for subscribing! Blessings! :)
HoppingHammy it’s nice to meet you too and you’re welcome
Aw, well I hope that your allergies can improve and lessen over time. 🌼
@@HoppingHammy thank u
@@HoppingHammy thank you 💕 just wanted to say that you've helped me a lot when I got my new hammy Freddie
If i need to add more info anyone, let me know:)
And my iPod down because it was right next to my hamsters 🐹
Love your videos
Thank you and I'm happy you enjoy them!
I can easily spend an entire afternoon cleaning my hamster's Detolf.
my sacrafice was getting my first job in order to afford best possible living space for my hamster as well as sold my tv to fit the cage on the table
I have no filter talking about money and pets, it helps new owners budget and know if they can afford a new pet. I would love having you come and me and say "hey, if you had a hamster, this would be your bill". I decide I might figure that out fostering
I give up about 40% of my money for my hamster but it is so worth it!❤️
Awww ❤️ I also agree with you that it's worth it. :) I've spent so much on hamsters over the years, but they've brought so much joy too!
HoppingHammy yes definitely agreed😘😊
So I have three dwarf and one Syrian and they are all in large bin cages. Would it be okay for me to stack two of them if I put holes in the side of the bins to provide ventilation? Would that be healthy and safe for the hammy’s? It’s getting pretty crowded so I’m trying to come up with ways to maximize space! :)
I would love to see a video of how you can tell what kind of dwarf hamster you have, i think mine is a winter white , but im not sure
I always keep about 80-100$ set aside just in case my hammy gets sick ❤
I know all too well of the hard parts, I have 5 dogs, 2 cats, 3 guinea pigs, 2 hamsters, 2 turtles, 1 snake, 1 bearded dragon, and fish.
Wow, I can only imagine how much you give to them with your time, money, effort, sacrifices, etc. I bet they are worth it though! :)
Me too! I have 2 dogs, a cat, a cockatiel, 2 guinea pigs, a rabbit, an anole, and a goldfish (soon to be two). My dream pets are a tortoise and a ball python ♡
where do you buy your hamster's bedding?
One sacrifice I had to make was having to blow big bucks, and I mean BIG bucks on my hamster, but not being able to play with them during the day 😭😭😭
That's a very good point about not playing with them during the day! Great to mention! I do think most hamsters prefer to be sleeping at that time rather than being woken up to play, so that's definitely something hamster owners should keep in mind.
@@HoppingHammy exactly! ilysm!
My friend is improperly taking care of her hamster hhhh! I might send this to her :)
There’s no cost
For cuteness
I wear perfume but i do it down stairs
Wow...im first yayyy^^ oh btw...can you help me with my hamster ?
She is a campbell dwarf if that matters
So she is like 1 years + of age and her eyes have been kinda half closed some moths after i got her but i was an idiot and even putted her in a 130 ish inches cage( she have it wayyyyy better now tho dont worry) so...i have tried all what i can to have her eyes open widely again i have read on the hamster Hideout forum that it might be because of some respiratory problems which i think might be the reasons because i used to give her a small corner toilet filled with this vitapol chinchilla sand and i just recently found out it was too dusty !!!!
Thank you!
Awesome video❤️
Hello hammy my hamster has a pink ball in her back pam and i dont kniw what to do. Can you help. Love your videos 💖💖😭
Hi rocio! I'm sorry I don't quite understand the question? :)

hopping hammy, i have a problem my hamster have a smell and it stinks how should i overcome this?
You can give your hamster a sand bath, you can find special types of sand online or at a store. You should not give your hamster a bath with water because it rinses off the oil's on there body's and then they can get sick, i highly recommend giving it a sand bath and cleaning the cage more often 🐹🐭😁
Zola Animates it’s probably urine smell. You must clean the cage
Nice video
I'm finally ready for another hamster 6 months after flurry death, and now I cant have one cuz I have a kitten... 😢😿
I'm going to get a part time job so I can spoil my hamster, Bibbles and get him a much bigger cage. P.s I love you videos. 🐁🐹
That's awesome of you to do that for Bibbles. :) What cage are you looking at getting?
We love your serious videos! It is so true that any pet requires a lot of responsibility and sacrifice... but they are so worth it :)
Please check out our Guinea Pig channel
Thank you! Best of luck with your channel too! :)
I’m earlyyyy yasssss
Hi there im assuming you know a lot about hamsters so i have a question. I'm online and found a rabbit and guinea pig cage. It says 'suitable for the following breeds: rabbits, guinea pig' but I assume it's okay for a hamster. It also says 'approxiamte dimension (product).46 X 95 X 57cm. Would you know how much floor space this has and would it be suitable for a hamster? Here is the link to the cage in case you would like to check it out for further information www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pets/ferplast-rabbit-100-indoor-home
True cost for a pet shouldn’t be a thing you shouldn’t have a pet if you can’t afford there needs though out there lives !
