I'm surprised nobody picked up on the fact that the mayor is a "two faced politician".
Or reacted to the fact he can't make decisions by himself because 'he's only an elected official.'
I was also born in '93. I didn't appreciate it as a kid but in my pre-teen years I became a big fan and it's my halloween tradition to watch it every year.
I relate to the citizens of Halloween Town. Living in the south, I too always say “What’s this?” when it starts to snow.
(very short version) Zero was done with a projection onto a glass plate.
20:12 Based Ruff taste.
Great choice.
Still waiting for 9
I'd watch you play Kingdom Hearts. I've seen so many blind playthroughs lol.
I think my favourite subtle scene after watching all these years is while Jack is contemplating the most complex ways to explain Christmas, Sally arrives to give him a gift out of kindness while he is struggling. In essence, she gets what Christmas is in its most honest form. Showing you care for someone during their most trying of times.
And another reason why she was literally made for Jack and meant to be together.
Ooh, that's a nice detail.
The final scene between Jack and Oogie has always been one of my favourite scenes in the entire film. How often do we get to see a final battle between hero and villain where the hero never has that cliche "looks-like-they're-about-to-fail-but-then-wins-by-some-miraculous-feat" moment? Jack never falters, never struggles, and remains confident the entire time. He just straight up murders Oogie. For most of the film, Jack is revered and respected by the townsfolk, and this one scene makes it very plain and simple as to why. He can go from walking like a gentleman to crawling like a spider in a heartbeat. Bonus points for none of that hero's remorse we also often see, where they sometimes toss up whether or not to kill a villain. Jack just gets it done.
I also love his big reveal how he positions himself knowing he's gonna be turned right-side up when Oogie sees him. Like 'Whats up, fuckface?'
I completely agree, I’m so happy they showcased a fact about his character that we already knew. He’s intimidating (terrifying), we’re told this several times but getting to see his wrath and with a stone face was so satisfying
Fun fact: This movie is a commentary on selling things early. That is EXACTLY how this movie came to be. Tim Burton was in a store back in the late 80's and saw them selling Christmas and Halloween decorations right next to each other, and it just triggered this fantastic idea for a movie.
They do this to minimise the amount of unsold seasonal products. They have to reduce their seasonal products after the event passes which results as a loss.
mother fucking bs christmass stuff on like july some times
I thought it was specifically watching a store display window switching between Halloween and Christmas decorations?
Who watches Nightmare Before Christmas and thinks "eh"? The story is unique, the characters are fun, the animation holds up well, and the songs are catchy. What's not to love?
Lots of people actually, I have a friend like that. I think it's absolutely stupendous but anything emo adjacent turns many off. Their loss! 😁
There's a lot of movies where I ask the same question. I apparently have a supremely bad taste in movies cause a lot of movies I love other people either hate or think it's "just OK."
For me, it can sometimes just be a "meh" experience watching it. Sometimes I really enjoy it, but it's rarer and it just depends on my mood.
There's a book called Long Live the Pumpkin Queen, which is about Sally and takes place after the events of the movie. It's about her having to come to terms with how her life (afterlife?) has changed after becoming queen of Halloween Town. In the book, they *do* go through some of the other doors (at least one of them, haven't actually finished the book yet). Jack and Sally have their honeymoon in Valentine's Town. It's a good book, you should check it out sometime.
I think the reason the townsfolk got so into Jacks plan about Christmas was because Jack being happy is so infectious with how much he gets into the planning and setting it all up
He’s just a beloved king.
Fun fact: Tim Burton wrote a three-page poem titled The Nightmare Before Christmas when he was a Disney animator in the early-1980s. Burton took inspiration from television specials of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964), How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966) and the poem A Visit from St. Nicholas. On the 2008 Special Edition Blu-ray/DVD release, Christopher Lee narrates this poem with a new animated visual accompaniment.
I have that particular DVD, and that reading by Christopher Lee is no less than amazing.
On another note, I once heard somewhere that Tim Burton DID have ideas for a sequel/spin-off where the other holidays are looked at from the Halloweentown perspective, but due to Disney being in the low budget sequel phase at the time of the suggestion (and that Disney wanted it done in CG animation instead due to how costly stop-motion tends to be, much to Tim Burton's chagrin), the idea was scrapped... or, at least it was, until Capcom somehow convinced Tim Burton and Disney to do a sequel as a game (which I thought was pretty good, all things considered).
Tim Burton actually had absolutely no involvement with the film. They put his name in the title because it was inspired by one of his poems.
Also, fun fact: Zero's nose is actually a very tiny jack-o'-lantern
My favourite moment is as Oogie turns the table thing and Jack is just casually lying on it. The way the music works in that shot, and the confidence in Jack, right alongside the fear that is so obvious in Oogie, just brilliant. A genuine goosebumps moment for me.
The music was done by Danny Elfman and he was also Jack Skellington's singing voice. He was also one of the voices for Lock, Shock, and Barrel, along with Paul Rubens (Pee-Wee Herman). This movie is a masterpeice.
Yes and Danny Elfman is having a Halloween concert soon my homegirl is going to it!! So amazing!!
Danny Elfman was also the voice of the Clown with the Tear-Away Face. I thought he was also the voice of the Behemoth, the zombie-like creature with the axe in his head. Catherine O'Hara, from the Home Alone movies and Beetlejuice, was the voice of Sally and Shock. The late Glenn Shadix, from Beetlejuice, was the voice of the Mayor. The late William Hickey, from National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, was the voice of the Mad Doctor.
They mentioned that first part in the video bro
“What’s this, what’s this” and Jack and Sally’s kiss at the end are some of my personal favorite moments in this movie 💀🎄
The best part is that Jack's paper 'spider snowflake' is not only unexpected, it is _physically impossible_ to make a paper snowflake that looks like that that way.
It is your first hint that the citizens of Halloweentown *_physically can't_* do anything other than Halloween.
The second hint is when Jack's trying to teach the Halloweentown musicians 'Jingle Bells' and they play the right notes _in the wrong key_ and make it into a _somber funeral dirge._ Later on, they're doing the same to Here Comes Santa Claus. They're _musicians,_ they know how to read music, how to play on-key, on beat. And they _physically can't _*_NOT_* play these energetic happy songs as slow, sad dirges... despite practicing hard and trying as hard as they can to do it right ever since Jack taught Jingle Bells to them.
Their 'Christmas' would never be Christmas, it would just be Halloween again, at Christmastime... it never would have worked out because while the people of Halloweentown certainly like the idea, they lack the capability of doing anything that ISN'T Halloween.
It is literally foreshadowed from the moment Jack starts trying to figure Christmas out EXACTLY how Jack's Christmas will turn out... not MIGHT turn out... WILL turn out.
But it is possible to make it, people have literally done it.
@Joseph-jy1hw It is possible to make it, but not possible to make it _the way Jack did_ because the spider snowflake is not quadrilaterally symmetrical.
You can recreate the snowflake, yes... but you can't do it by folding the square twice and then cutting, like Jack did.
Everytime I have a Migraine, I always quote Dr Finklestein saying "Oh My head!!"
Also Paul Reubens also known as Pee-Wee Herman played one of the trick-or-treaters.
I love how this movie can best be summed up as “Jack learns that cultural appropriation is wrong”
Oogie's Revenge is for PS2, and it's a great game, definitely recommend to any Tim Burton fan! The only problem with the game is that the camera is frustrating
All early 2000s 3d games cameras are wierd
It's not a "land of Igors" in Igor. It's a land where all evil scientists have Igors. Definitely an underrated and overhated film you need to check out! For a mid-2000's family film, that movie had BALLS at times.
my favorite part of the kidnap the sandy claws song they straight up go "jack doesn't hesitate to beat the shit out of children" and no one bats an eye lol.
💜🧡💙 My favorurite song is Oogie Boogie's song. Alos, Jack Skellington laughing as Santa almost sounds like Brook laughing because it's so high pitched. Ruff, you didn't have to kill him at the end! 😆
What’s crazy is that Disney keeps trying to make a sequel to the movie but Tim Burton has been resolute with ending it with this movie.
20:28 "This is your favorite song?"
YES!!!!!!!!!!! I was like 3 singing this word for word, a song about torture ...I regret nothing 🤌🏽
Believe it or not, there's a fully claymation animated videogame from 1996 called the Neverhood. It's from the same guy who made Earthworm Jim and it's equally trippy.
As Kingdom Hearts fan, I love watching lets plays of the game. So yes, I would love to watch and recommend Boom play the series!
Jack's speaking voice is played by Chris Sarandon who plays the lead in the original Fright Night (1985); if you don't already have that Fright Night on your list for Halloween movies, I highly recommend it, it's a classic 80's horror film!
It's not just a movie, it's a way of life. In all seriousness the movie has everything. A visual style unlike any other movie's ✅moody romance ✅theatrical, distinctive music and poetic lyrics like "Like a memory long since past, here in an instant gone in a flash" ✅an inappropriately morbid sense of humor ✅and most crucially, a rare lesson to appreciate what you have because not all dreams are meant to be ✅
Man, the initial stirrings of the score as the title card comes up? Pure magic for me. Not everyone gets the movie but confound it all, I love it though...
There is a sequel book "All Hail the Pumpkin Queen" where Sally actually visits all the other holiday worlds.
Disney initially released this through a subsidiary rather than their regular brand.
I KNEW this was gonna be the next one ya'll react to. Surprised Bree wasn't here for this one too, since she was here for Monster House, Corpse Bride, and ParaNorman.
Kingdom Hearts is one of my favorite games. The story gets complex but the world designs are Amazing!
Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge (the PS2 game you mentioned) is a pretty interesting and (in my personal opinion) fun experience. It's not a masterpiece, and it has some flaws, and can be a bit repetitive and simple, but the voice acting, art direction, sound, music, and how fun it is to actually play as Jack and explore the Halloween Holiday world much more expansively than in Kingdom Hearts makes up for some of the tedium, I believe. As for how it starts...
Jack, having learned his lesson from the movie keeps to his word and tries to embrace who he is and appreciate what he has... but, he's still stuck in a rut. Figuring that going out into the world to try and find new discoveries isn't a bad idea in of itself after Dr. Finkelstein shows him something new he found, Jack leaves town for a while. While he's out, the three brats Lock, Shock, and Barrel decide to bring Oogie back to working order (because they still revere him), and the big ol' sack of bugs wastes no time enacting a plan of revenge.
Upon Jack's return, he finds the town is overrun with hostile monsters, scared townsfolk, Dr. Finkelstein brainwashed, the neighborhood entirely and maliciously boobytrapped, and the holiday leaders of other holidays kidnapped, with Oogie himself running the show. Jack decides to take it upon himself to show WHY he's so loved, respected, and feared by everyone in Halloweentown, and kick some serious, spooky ass.
Well hey, no movie/game/show is perfect, so I don't see your point 🤪
@@kobemarion1137 My point is that a lot of people don't like it due to its repetitive gameplay and very simplistic story, and I'm shilling on its behalf because it's other qualities (and my love for the original movie) outweigh it's issues in my perspective.
I remember renting it for the Xbox a long time ago, and having a blast for the weekend that I was able to play it.
@@quartzninja Same, up until I managed to actually find a proper copy to keep and that I played it on the PS2 instead.
I feel for both Sally and Fink. Their relationship isn't healthy, but I wish we knew more. I love this movie so much and it's world and it's characters.
If I had a nickel for everytime Sorta Stupid Reacts had through a Henry Sellick stop-motion movie was directed by Tim Burton I would have 2 nickels.
Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice (in a row).
Love this movie it is the most watched. The great thing about this movie you can see it at Christmas as well.
I actually haven’t seen this Tim Burton film until I was much older. When I did, I thought it was and interesting experience. One thing I admire about it are the songs, like “This is Halloween” and the Oogie Boogie song.
Listen to VoicePlay’s cover of the Oogie Boogie song 👀✨
Fun fact: The face in the cello is Danny Elfman himself lol (the design and voice)
You guys making 100% sure that The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Tim Burton flim 😂.
I just hope disney keeps their live action remake disaster making hands off this and leaves it as it is.
This movie is both a Halloween and Christmas tradition of mine 🖤🧡
To be clear, the story concept was Tim Burton's idea, though the movie itself was directed by Henry Selick. The same man that gave us Coraline, and his most recent work Wendell and Wild!
I would sugest checing out “monster in Paris” underated movie
Oogie always came off as the strangest character in Halloween town to me. He’s a mass of hive minded insects inside a body of burlap.
Fun fact: the soundtrack contains possibly the original extended opening narration and a closing narration too, which are voiced by no less than Patrick Stewart - who does NOT do the opening narration in the movie itself.
Also, the game Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge is deeply tedious. Don't bother with it.
They shouldve watched Frankenweenie, Corpse Bride, then The Nightmare before Christmas in that particular order for no particular reason.
iykyk.
Good stop motion never ages. Great stop motion if forever remembered.
I grew up on the nightmare before Christmas video game.
‘Oogie’s revenge’
That shit was sick
5:54 It gets creepier when you read the books, namely the new one about Sally and her backstory. That decrepit creep had kidnapped her, tore out her cotton stuffing, sewed her up with leaves, and messed with her memories to keep her like a bargaining chip against her parents who rule over another one of the Tree Door realms.
11:01 that pause got me fucking dying the whole time.
Words can't describe how much I love this movie!! I'm so happy y'all are finally reacting to it!
i agree about Thanksgiving Town, but being Canadian works better, early October so the weather is better, no insane Black Friday, and Halloween coming up
This is one of my favorite Tim Burton movies! This has such a special place in my heart
24:38 He thinks he's giving him a day off
So glad you guys watched this! To think it's been 30 years! This is still my favorite movie of all time! I still have my vcr copy of this movie 😅 I would love to see you guys to a live stream or a playthrough of Kingdom Hearts! I know Ruff has played it but I'd love to see Boom and Erik play it! 🙏🎃
Also, fun fact, there actually is a sequel to this, it's a book titled Long Live the Pumpkin Queen
Fun fact: there’s a deleted scene on Disney+ where Dr. Finkelstein turns out to be Oogie Boogie it’s a very weird scene but kinda dope
I have watched a whole-ass documentary on this movie. And fun fact: Danny Elfman was gonna be the voice actor and singer for Jack but they decided to not let him voice Jack and only do singing, which Danny was actually really excited to do, especially the song What’s This?. Which is his favourite song he sang I’m pretty sure
I have never understood those people who have labeled Jack a villain. I have never seen him as a villian. I have always seen him as someone who happened to come across something amazing and wanted to share it with his friends. FFS, Jack isn't a villian, he's an influencer!
this is an amazing movie, though I count it more a Christmas movie
5:34 I doubt Danny elfman sang for jack. Danny elfman helped write the songs. Tim burton and Danny elfman always work together in musicals
I enjoy watching movie reaction videos, except for one thing. The volume in the movies are always so low I have to strain to hear them. And I have my volume on the video and my computer both at 100%,
I think there is a Trilogy of The nightmare before Christmas, but the other two are on videogames, the prequel is on GBA and the sequel is on PS2 and the movie is between both
1:55 CORALINE'S CAT!!!
You should TOTALLY watch halloweentown. But i need to watch all of them or none honestly. Cause its bad but its a bad good 😂😂😂
21:15 Disney didn’t make the movie. This is made from touchstone pictures. Disney bought it. I still have the original dvd that even says it is touchstone pictures and has nothing about disney
I feel so bad for Ruff, even when his name is in the tittle it's still not directed by Burton.
I'm sorry I laughed at "directed by Henry Selick", your reaction was priceless 🤣 🤣
It seems like whoever was in charge of Disney at the time didn't put any eyes on this as it was made cause they were really upset about it when it came out cause they didn't expect it to be so dark and kinda buried it in when it came out... and yet it blew up on home video so then they were like "Sorry I can't hear you with these dollar signs on my eyes!"
I always like to watch this the day after Halloween. The last Halloween movie of the year, and the first Christmas one, too.
Tim Burton was the producer. He wasn't the director but came up whith the whole concept, story and design
If that 'vision' of Sally's ended at just the Xmas tree and didn't set fire than she would not have been so against Jack's actions imo.
You know what’s funny Tim burton has actually said this is not a Halloween movie it’s a Christmas movie that’s in a Halloween town
Yo wait, boom singing the pumpkin king line at the end was immaculate, why is no one talking about how well this dood can sing???
I like this movie but I’m deff nowhere as hardcore as some fans are 😂 but I do try and watch it once a year… I guess this counts 👀
5:40 Ah, yes, the lively nightshade, also known as the tomato. Fun fact for those who don't know.
I seen this movie a lot.
But this is probably my third or fifth time I seem it in English 😂
I'm dead serious!!! You should watch the stopmotion Pinocchio movie!!!
Y’all should watch Eight legged freaks
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT
Took me so long to realize the Mayor is two-faced because he's a politician.
I had a feeling they had watched this for some reason
the theme of Halloween has some of the best movies 🍿 😁
they've watched like half of what they react to lmao
The two faced politician will always be one of the most clever designs
8:25 that reminds me of Rise of the guardians, strangely halloween was left out for some reason...
My favorite Disney movie because of this movie Goths like me existed
Henry Selick gets overshadowed so much for this
4:37 that's a trick called pepper's ghost. a clear, reflective surface is put in front of the camera at an angle, and the "see-through" character is animated just off-screen. the reflective surface makes Zero look like a ghost
I don’t mind this too much, but there seems to be a small glitch these past few videos with the screen disappearing and reappearing throughout the video. Other than that, nice reaction. 👏
That’s not a glitch, it’s intentional. Part of dealing with YT copyright
Deym been waiting for this ever since you reacted on corpse bride
You there's is recent novel continuation of Nightmare Before Christmas telling the story Sally's new life as the Pumpkin Queen
Jack's suit is so iconic. It was supposed to be all black but they decided to add the white lines to it because on set everything was too dark and you could not see it properly in the camera.
I'd definitely watch Boom play Kingdom Hearts :)
Went my entire life not knowing that zeros nose was a little jack o lantern
It explains a lot about people born in the 93 right?
Yes the PS2 game! I still have it! Its one of my favorites!
I think I had the game… But I want to play it again.
I think my only gripe with this movie is that we go through a door to get to Halloween Town but then we never see Jack go through a door to get to the other trees. It's never even implied. So just that lack of continuity is a little annoying. Otherwise, perfect movie.
Always my favorite movie, I own a lot of stuff themed around the movie 😅
Please watch James and the giant peach
