I made the choice to have a tele, a strato, a Les Paul, a hollowbody and an offset rather than just one expensive Fender! Did I think I'd play better? No, I just thought I'd have more sonic possibilities.

Hey John, First of all, I'm a bit wordy, so I apologize for the length of this post in advance. Secondly, it may not be particularly helpful, but I'll put in my 2 pence anyway.
This is something I've grappled with regularly. I don't have a lot of gear, (9 guitars, including 2 accoustics, and a dozen or so pedals) but the idea of pairing it down to one guitar and one amp and the minimum number of pedals I need to get through a gig, is appealing to me. But I don't have one guitar that can "do it all". The one that gets closest is my Sire T7 FM, but it isn't the guitar I love to play the most. Also, there's something inspiring about picking up a guitar you haven't played in a while, and getting reacquainted. The bottom line is, people don't come to hear me play guitar in a cover band. I'm not that good. They come to hear the songs that they like. As long as we don't butcher them, the punters go home happy. If ever I decide to play my own music again, I think it will be most important to have my own voice on the instrument then. Maybe knowing your #1 intimately, and worrying less about "doing it all" may be a better approach. Anyway, on and on it goes, back and forth. Thanks for all the work that you do. Best regards, Nigel.

Regardless of the amount of guitars, 95% of my time goes to just one of them. That means that, by the time I want to play any other it probably needs new strings or some maintenance. Which puts me off.

"The most music from the least gear." I thought that was brilliant. I still do. I bought into that concept so much that instead of a dozen guitars, I now have 4; One Les Paul. One Strat. One semi-hollow electric. One acoustic.

What John Mayer and Keith Urban said regarding bonding with a guitar...and or limiting the number of guitars so that you can bond with it is spot on ! I am finding spending a few days each with 4-5 guitars you truly don't know the instrument. You're not as comfortable with the instrument switching as much as I have trying to justify the purchases. Different feel necks, different fret radius's, different weights, or how the electronics are laid out on the body...just many things as you mentioned John....all spot on ! If that blue K line Strat's frets are really wearing, I'd have it re fretted with stainless steel frets. Especially if that's your #1 ~!

I use one "Pedal" every day - An HX Stomp I've had for four years. I love that it can do everything I want and need, but learning how to do that well also consumes a lot of time. It's a thousand kicks to use, but it's a thousand kicks to learn.

Fun thing to do with your DR (totally safe....will not hurt your amp). Pull out the first preamp tube. (furthest to the left). That's the preamp tube for the Normal channel. By pulling that tube, there is more voltage supplied to the Vibrato channel. This will make that Vibrato channel more gained up without being nasty....it's like you're using a light overdrive pedal. I know you seem to like the Normal channel but this is a cool sound. BTW, I'm not sure whether it works the other way (pulling the second tube).

For me I have a few guitars I love and a few guitars I rarely play. I find with the guitars I don't play as much, I spend more time and money trying to "fix them up" where I ought to just play the guitars I already love. One thing I noticed recently is that a really good Tele into a clean amp (or clean tone) is fantastic for practice, it's no frills just a good basic sound. Fewer options seems to mean less time fussing and even just having fewer pickup/switch options can be a really good thing.

I have a medium collection, many of which fulfil a role in a recording context, each one inspires me to play, and play Certain ways. Each one creates tone differently.
I also ‘built’ several during lockdown mainly Strats and teles with differing pickups and wiring etc. I challenge myself every day to play 2-3 of them when not recording.

I mainly play one guitar: a professional Strat (first version, SSS) with jumbo stainless steel frets.
I spent hours trying out many others before choosing this one, and I always come back to it.
The two others I own are backups, though I occasionally use them for their differences (a luthier-made HH and an HSS).
Sometimes I think a Jazzmaster could be cool, but I don’t really need another guitar. Besides, all the other professional models I’ve tried didn’t quite feel the same-some were too punchy or too glassy for my taste.
Thank you for your videos :)

A major fret dressing (leveling, shaping/dressing, polish) can make a guitar feel and play "different". Not necessarily a bad thing, but could require some re-learning of technique.
A refret can change all the above and even make the guitar sound different.

I have 5 electric guitars: 1997 Heritage H535 (es335), PRS S2 Singlecut, PRS SE McCarty 594 Standard, Schecter PT Special (tele) and Yamaha Pacifica 612. I play the PRS SE McCarty 594 90% of the time. PRS S2 Singlecut next and the Heritage H535 next. I occasionally pull out the Yamaha Pacifica if I want single coil sounds for a change and I hardly every play the Schecter PT Special. I probably should sell the Schecter and the Yamaha and get one single coil guitar that I really like and be done with it.

Along this same line of thought... I use the Tomo Fujitsu challenge to refocus.... On my Strats for 30 days i can only use the middle pickup all needed sounds have to be sourced from the vol, tone, and amp. Kinda like using a telly, forces you to focus on tone and what fits in the mix.

I have 6 electrics and one nice acoustic. I tend to rotate to play all my guitars consistently. I tend to gravitate to certain ones for certain things. I think one single coil guitar and one humbucker guitar is all you need unless you’re playing in a bunch of different tunings.

  • @AlanW

The flip side is ... well, I had this one PRS I exclusively played from like 1991 to 2006, and there was always a problem when I picked up someone else's to check it out or whatever. I couldn't play. I felt hobbled on anything else.
When I started picking up more instruments on the regular, I was able to appreciate other instruments, and it stopped mattering what the shape of the neck was, or the scale length so much.
Maybe it was just me being a crap guitarist, but I think there's a value to having a breadth of expierence, or whatever you want to call it.

It's a struggle to reduce the number of guitars I have. This is in great part to being left handed and their rarity. They're not expensive just rare.
I try to give each time out of the cupboard at home and it's fun. Each has its own personality. Could i tell them apart off a recording? Nope!
I only gig one of my basses, a couple of acoustics and a couple of my electrics.
I have accumulated quite a few pedals since I ran out of space. Theyre fun to play with at home.

The main thing is, every minute spent playing the guitar makes you a better guitarist, whereas no minute spent messing with gear makes you a better guitarist. Thus: wait until you have really mastered the instrument before wasting minutes on things like gear or switching guitars. I.e. give me a guitarist who has spent 1000 hours with the same axe and amp before giving me one who's spent half those hours faffing with gear.

I think to some extent, and somewhat unfortunately, the valid and valuable search for new musical ideas and directions and the search for one's own tone and sound, can be supplanted by the search for, and acquisition of, new gear. There's always an excuse for what you've decide you need to buy ... under those circumstances.
However, where gear has a genuine role in the process of finding your own musical identity there is no shame in having multiple styles of playing on different instruments if it's working for you, or multiple kinds of tones you are getting from different gear, IF it's resulting in the creation of something you believe has genuine value to you and/or others.
Identifying where the line is between is between the two conditions is very very hard imo

Another video where someone who has gone through fifty guitars in the last few years pontificates about why we shouldn’t do what they did.
The Mayer and Urban conversation keeps coming up. Do you think there might be other reasons, other than the number of guitars, they felt like they weren’t as “in touch” with their instruments?
I feel like maybe just maybe they are both living slightly different lives than they were at that stage where they had fewer guitars and there might be other factors at play here!

I could do without the latter but it does have a whole new sound and I usually end up playing totally different things when I pick it up.
So yea, I wouldn't really understand the need of having like 5 guitars of the same type, but I feel like very few people are actually like that, most of the guitarists I've met have like 2 or 3 different guitars, and maybe kept the one they started on

He’s still a musician first and just talking “guitar” like the rest of us do. As far as making money off it, more power to him.

Mmmm, whatever inspires you to play.
As always there’s no right or wrong, just what works for you
