How come “that carpet really tied the room together” is the bigger loss to “the Dude”? I would have guessed that having his head dunked several times into a really dirty toilet would have been considerably worse, but “the Dude” never addressed that afterwards? Obviously the Coen’s had a funnier script plot line with the carpet replacement running theme, but most folks would object more to the toilet head dunks! I guess that was part of the Dudes’s uniqueness, a pothead with decorating taste.

It’s a parody of The Big Sleep (Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall). Both stories have a rich old man hiring a detective, a femme fatale daughter and an out of control younger woman who’s involved in crime. The detective in this case is the Coen Brother’s stoner friend.

Parody: Yes - correct! It's a parody of the hard-boiled detective movies of the 40's and 50's. Complete with a hero who is trying to find the truth amid double-dealing criminals, low-lifes, scammers and a femme fatale.

This movie is indeed a bit of a parody. As mentioned by others, it takes the structure of old detective movies and basically throws in a character (the Dude) who does not belong in such a story and is just trying to get out. One detective movie that was a big influence is "The Big Sleep," which is considered by many to have brilliant acting and a plot that doesn't make a lot of sense (partly because the studio cut out important information because they thought it was boring and they wanted to focus more on the characters who were flirting).

It actually is a parody of old film noirs, except that old film noirs had the main character (usually a detective) try to solve a mystery and get lost in a maze of people and their relationships and secrets, whereas The Big Lebowski has the main character get dragged through a maze of people and their relationships and secrets despite his best efforts ot stay out of stuff. It's a story happening not because of him, but regardless of him. All he ever wanted was his rug back.

It definitely is to the irony of life. How you can do everything right and get everything wrong. Vice versa. And it does a good job of expressing that by making life interesting. Comedy and tragedy are cousins.

"I think this movie was a bad idea."
    "Parody?"
"I'm not sure I'm saying it right."
    Lol.
Coen brothers movies are a lot of "who is this weird character, they're crazy and interesting but why are they here?" It's kinda its own genre, but a lot of fun.

  • @jackrussell3951

Ellie got it right. This and many other Coen Brothers movies have a lot to do with the futility of trying to make some order out of chaos. The universe doesn't care about your plans or your perception of how things should be. Stupid shit does, indeed, just keep happening and happening. Sometimes it's comically absurd like in this or "Burn After Reading" and sometimes it's dark and tragic like in "No Country for Old Men" or "Inside Llewyn Davis," but the fact remains that life is constantly unpredictable. But hey, without chaos we wouldn't have sweet, sweet serendipity.

These girls have a great personality .They are very down-to-earth. It seems like they don't judge They have a open mind.( they are not snooty) Fun and loving to be around. Good energy. American girls aren't like that. I know there are some sweet American girls , but it seems like these girls value the meaning of true friendship. Being grateful for the simple things in life. (they don't take things for granted) It probably don't take much to make them happy they're very grateful.

LOL. I've never been to this channel, but it was funny to see (after 3 minutes) that these girls have NO IDEA what's going on in this movie, LOLOLOL. I don't mean to suggest they are stupid, but, you really need to be born in America (or speak PERFECT English, and been raised in western culture, and have seen a LOT of American movies) to fully comprehend and appreciate this movie (a movie that's FANTASTIC when you can fully appreciate its flavor). I'll watch the entire video, but it's kinda of painful to see their "WTF???" looks on their faces the whole time, lol.
