The best way I've heard this described is that there's a movie trying to happen to The Dude but he just isn't having it
Perfect desciption.
The exact opposite of this happens in Under the Silver Lake. It's about a random bored dude who is desperately trying to find the plotline in a bunch of incidents that may or may not be connected.
@@martinvancura2176 haha great observation about a movie I love. The guy is like an inversion of the cool guy in a thousand other movies. Twisted into a more realistic unappealing and dark individual.
It is exactly a noir detective movie that keeps trying to start but keeps failing.
Yeah, he's the only main character in a movie who just doesn't want to be in the movie at all. He just wants to bowl, and relax in his apartment drinking white russians and smoking pot.
The one instance where The Dude tries to be proactive is with the pad of paper at Jackie Treehorn's party.
"Smokey, this is bowling not Nam. There are rules."
"Has the world gone mad" Walter says this as he pulls out a gun at a bowling alley because a guy may have stepped over the line.

The joke I laughed hardest at when I first saw this movie was when the Dude hammered the board into his floor to help barricade the door, then IMMEDIATELY it fails.
Upon further watches though I always really enjoy how the Dude picks up on all the different characters' speech habits and repeats them another time in the movie, from "This aggression will not stand," to "really tied the room together", to "you mean coitus", to "in the parlance of our time," and "sometimes you eat the bear." The Dude is a sponge!
My favorite one probably is when he repeats the nihilists threat, "we're gonna cut your dick off, Larry."
Exactly - same.
The best part is some of those aren't even nails. Some are thumb tacks and he even hammers a rivet into the board 😀
"8 year olds, dude" always gets me
“You mean coitus” has me laughing out loud every time.
The cop throwing the coffee cup scene is still to this day one of the funniest things I've ever seen in a movie. I've seen it countless times and I still laugh every time.
There are some great bits of physical comedy in this. The coffee cup flying is one of those. The way he pushes it so that it flies upright/vertical kills me every time.
Jeff stated in an interview that when they did the scene with him floating under the girls skirts the girls had shoved a bunch of fake hair in their underwear so it looked like they had massive bushes as a prank on Jeff, so he had to stay in character while trying not to react to it 😂
You can see in his eyes the exact moment he sees it.

Also in the same interview he said that his daughters were on set that day as well.
This movie has the best TV edit ever. "This is what happens, Larry. This is what happens when you find a stranger in the alps!"

One of the best comedies of all time. Sadly, a small, I mean SMALL, population of people get this specific kind of humor and fully appreciate it. This was made at a time in Cohen's career when they were making what they wanted and, essentially, giving a middle finger to the Hollywood business in general. An absolute classic and not surprised this is one of the Mr.'s favorite
Ironically the Coen bros didn't even like how this movie turned out. I think it's a perfect comedy.
To get an idea of how much they truly didn't give a fuck at this point, remember that the only reason Sam Elliott was in this movie at all is because the Coens really, really wanted to put him in it, but they didn't have a part for him, so they just made him a bizarre, omnipotent narrator character with no relevance at all to the plot. Just because they felt like it, no deeper reason. Even Sam Elliott said that he didn't really understand why exactly they wanted him in the movie or what he was supposed to be bringing to the table, but it resulted in one of his most iconic roles of all time.
"Are those womens jelly-sandals?"
"Yeah...well...you know, that's just like ah...your opinion men..."
And I believe those sandals were actually Jeff's. The majority of Jeff Bridges' outfits in this film were his own. Right? And that fantasy sequence with the ladies and him looking up at their business, Jeff tells a funny story on Conan and it's really funny who decided to visit the sit that day.

The movie is best enjoyed when you realize that the story means nothing at all. The plot basically resolves itself. It's all about the weird and quirky cast of characters and dialogue.
That's why it keeps getting better with repeat viewings. So rich and subtly detailed. You pick up new things every time you watch. The first watch, you don't know what's going on, and it seems so complex. When you know it's all for nothing, you realize how brilliant the dialogue and characters are.
Overrated. Over hyped Piece of Garbage

I love that about it. Every single major plot point in this movie would have resolved the same way, whether the Dude was there or not. Hell, even the minor ones. I also love that it's framed as being a movie about bowling, and yet, we never see the Dude bowl a single time. They make it seem like the whole thing is building up to the big bowling match, but then the movie ends right before the match is about to happen.
"Sam Elliott is the epitome of sexy." Now I understand why Mr. Movies is rocking that hat and 'stache.
Mr. Movies has the voice too, everything makes sense!

The set up and reveal of Jackie Treehorn's doodle is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
Only time The Dude tried to actively solve part of the mystery haha
I rented this movie on cassette back in the '90s and watched it with my dad. The phone never rang, no interruptions, very cozy movie and the most perfect viewing experience ever!
This is just the perfect movie. I can never get enough of it.
Love how the dude adopts words and phrases from others throughout the movie and scenes in his dreams or an amalgamation of what he’s heard and seen.

I love that the Dude and Walter are so different in every conceivable way, yet you completely buy that they're the best of friends
Walter is not only my favorite character of this movie, but one of my favorite movie characters ever

The woman missing the toe , with the carpet pissers , is Aimee Mann. An amazing singer songwriter. She was in the 80s one-hit wonder Til Tuesday. And still makes beautiful solo music.
And here I thought she was an actual German (as opposed to ethnically). She sure looks like one.

The Dude Abides!
"O Brother Where Art Thou" is one of the best Cohan Brothers films. True Grit, by them is a masterpiece.
Their remake pales in comparison to the John Wayne version
@@15blackshirt Sorry, but hard disagree on that one. The remake is pretty much better in every way in my opinion. The acting is excellent from the entire cast, the cinematography by Roger Deakins is gorgeaus and might be his best work, the music is fantastic and the ending is a lot better than the original.
I still liked the original though, but nowhere near as much as the remake, which gets better every time I see it. (Just like The Big Lebowski)
IMO this movie has the most realistic depiction of the LAPD. I love how long it took them to come to the bowling alley after Walter took out his gun. They finished the game and casually strolled out before the cops got off their ass.
Plus they had a team of crack detectives working around the clock on that stolen car, dontcha know.
Miller's Crossing is an early CB flick that's really good.

The scene where Walter and the Dude confront Larry and Walter goes "You're killing your father, Larry!" And then it gets real quiet and you can hear his dad breathing in the background cracks me up 😂
There are movies that bear rewatching (because they're that good), movies that require rewatching (because maybe they're confusing, like every other Nolan flick), and then there are movies that reward rewatching. These are movies where you either catch something new or your enjoyment changes each time you see it. Off the top of my head, I know 3 in this category: Big Lebowski, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and Princess Bride.
Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz fall squarely in there too.

Of note; one of the nihilists is played by Flea, the bass player for Red Hot Chili Peppers (who's been in a surprisingly large number of films).
Also plays bass in his birthday suit on the occasion!

To me Sam Elliot's character in this movie, is God of that world (that's why he's the narrator and broke the 4th wall), and The Dude peaked his interest so much that he descended into the human world, just to experience and watch what the Dude is going to do next just for curiosity.

True Grit is an often forgotten Coen Brothers movie that's worth watching.

I keep wondering how he ended up in this movie. Maybe the brothers are fans of his?
I noticed that rug really tied the room together. Sam Elliot makes a great god figure.

One thing about this movie that not a lot of people notice is that almost every line that seems slightly intelligent that the Dude mutters during this movie is something he has heard someone else say earlier in the movie. Like in the beginning scene at Ralph's, he hears President Bush say, "This aggression will not stand". Then he says it later. And when Maude refers to sex as "coitus", then he repeats it almost immediately. Also, the line the narrator says to him about sometimes you eat the bar, and sometimes the bar eats you. He is repeating that one at the bowling alley right before he realizes the drifter is sitting next to him. This movie only gets better the more times you watch it. My favorite movie of all time.

The most memorable theatrical experience I’ve had was while watching this; a local arthouse theater was hosting the movie with an art exhibit inspired by the film out in the lobby. When I got there, there’s two Senior Citizen Center buses outside; the auditorium was filled with a bunch of people who were all 60 and over, and they were some of the most riotous people I’ve ever seen a movie with! The kind of laughter and enthusiasm you see at midnight shows or big superhero movies! Then after the show, I spoke with one of the few people under 50 and he talked about how he was a psychology student who was putting together a profile of Walter as part of an assignment; in short, Walter is a war vet suffering from PTSD and possibly multiple-personality disorder, and Donnie is one of those personalities manifesting as a hallucination (perhaps inspired by someone Walter saw get killed in “Nam).

I totally randomly saw this in the movie theaters, saw no ads for it, and had no idea what to expect. Which is pretty much the best way to watch any Cohen Brothers movie..
This was a really good time! The Mrs continues to surprise as she is always sussing out the truth (she could tell it wasn't Tara Reid's toe? Who knows what Tara Reid's toe even looks like? The Mrs apparently... ). You guys laughed the whole way through, and I was laughing with you. I would love to see more comedies on the channel.
I always thought the Burbs was underrated, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles and My Cousin Vinny are great if you haven't seen them.
Rip Hoffman, great character actor and the millionare actor, dont remember his name. He was in Blazing saddles, Another classic comedy. Mark it 8 is a name of a film quiz team in my home town(random comment).

Interesting (to me) music-related trivia in this movie: Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers was one of the male nihilists; Aimee Mann, the singer of the band, Til Tuesday (Voices Carry), was the female nihilist who lost her toe; and the song that played during the dream-sequence after Jackie Treehorn drugged The Dude was by a band called "The First Edition;" the singer was Kenny Rogers, before his solo career.
Also, Smokey who Walter almost shot is Jimmie Dale Gilmore, a famous country singer who has three Grammy nominations for his music, Jeff Bridges himself has an album that did well ranking highly on Billboard, Harry Bugin who played "Arthur Digby Sellers" has played bass with Glenn Miller and Sammy Kaye and others. The woman who says "You must be here to fix the cable" in Logjammin played classical piano at Carnegie Hall at the age of 13 and has degrees in Law, Psychology and Special Education and is a very interesting person named Asia Carrera.
The first 2x you watch this film you like it. You won't realize it's a masterpiece and a perfect movie until about the 3rd time.
Adore the Big L, one of the most quotable films ever made. One of my favourite watering holes in the entire world is a Lebowski themed pub in Reykjavik, Iceland. If you are ever in country give it a look, well worth a visit, also a decent Lebowski bar in Edinburgh (Scotland) too if you ever make it across the pond to HMS United Kingdom.
Best Line -- "Went alright. Dude's car got a little dinged up."
One really great Coen Brothers movie that everyone seems to have forgotten about is "The Ladykillers" with Tom Hanks.
I worked in a video store when this came out on VHS and never paid much attention to it. I was into Star Wars and South Park and stuff like that at the time. A few years later, my buddy made me watch it and I instantly became a fan. It started my love for White Russians. Also, without Sam Elliot, this would have been a very different movie.
"Raising Arizona" should be next, classic Coen brothers, almost starring former boxer Randall Tex Cobb.

Amid all the "fun facts" I'll add another: Goodman used to do radio commercial voice-overs for In N Out for several years back in the late 80s/early 90s. "Walter" flipping out about Donny's insistence on In N Out - and Walter's refusal to say the name of the place - was an inside joke just for Southern Californians. The Coens are great. :)
This movie has some of the best visual gags ever. So damn good.
What made this movie so great (to me) was the characters. High quality acting and I think for some, it was their best work.
My favorite movie quote --- "You want a toe? I can getcha a toe."

I've always felt The Big Lebowski is overrated. Sure it has chuckles here and there but Raising Arizona is way funnier IMO.
@@Scary__fun It's definitely zaniner. It's more cartoonishly funny than The Big Lebowski and I absolutely love it, but I wouldn't call TBL overrated. It's sort of like comparing apples to oranges. They're just tonally, very different types of films.

Burn After Reading is hilarious and underrated. Similar tone to lebowski but somehow funnier in my mind
Still remember me and a group of friends blindly picking this to watch from a bunch of movies and none of us wanting to watch it. Then we all loved it for all its craziness. So quotable.

The Coen Brothers have always been hit-or-miss for me, and The Big Lebowski is one I never managed to love. You guys made revisiting it fun, though!
