  • Here is a really easy and cheap way for you ls swap people to get your overdrive trans in without having to buy a expensive cross member. This is on my 70 El Camino but works with other GM A-bodys of the era.

    Surprised me how easy to grid off the factory welds.
    One tap with a hammer/fell right off.
    Until I found u again/I'd forgot which way it faced before?
    The cable hanger told me.

    I have a 1970 Chevelle. I just installed an LS with the 4L65E, the cross member on your truck is identical to mine so I’ll do the same fab since I know how to weld. Just have to take it to work with me but I’ll do the same deal. Thanks for your video extremely helpful. I didn’t know the after market ones had issues with emergency cable but cause of this video again I’ll do the same.

    Since nobody noticed, or if they did they didn't comment. Very nice welding on the exhaust.

    I’m still wondering why the direction from Holley say to use that transmission spaced as well. When the 4l80 mount has one bolt and the other style trans have 2.

    • @pugbug288
      @pugbug288  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      mcfero1 that’s my old crossmember. The TH350 has the two bolt style. Those two bolt holes still remain u. That flange. I just made a new hole in the flange for the 4L80e bushing. That red spacer is actually a bushing not from Holley. That needed with any 4L80e.

    Great video I realize it has been some time since you made it. I have a 70 Chevelle installing a 4l80e trans, I have one question why did you have put the bracket on the other side? I prefer the stock crossmembers they look more beefier. Thanks

    • @pugbug288
      @pugbug288  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wanted to keep the parking brake cables. The cables run to and from the trans crossmember. By flipping the bracket the only had to move it back a minimal amount. If I left that the cable wouldn’t work.

    Very helpful
    I was hopeful to use my stock cross member too.
    I see why only 2 inches.
    Plus the perch reverse ed.
    Spacer looks?1/2inch.
    Is it a bad angle without the space ers?
    Real good video!

    • @pugbug288
      @pugbug288  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea the spacer just gives you that proper angle to get the driveshaft pinion angle. It’s 3/8 of an inch. If ya need videos or pictures let me know I still got the car.

    What car is that crossmember from that you can run duel 3"?
    I really like this idea.

      jerrad powers This is the factory crossmember from the this car. 1970 Chevy El Camino. Had a 350 engine and turbo 350 trans from the factory.

    Did you have to use the crossmember spacers included in the Hooker forward mount kit? I have a 4l60e in my ls swap 72 el camino. The instructions say to use the spacers but there is no way the transmission will clear with the spacers even when I change the body mounts. I called Holley but they said I should be able to use the spacers just the same. May be the difference in chevelle c channel frame and El Camino boxed frame.

    • @pugbug288
      @pugbug288  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ty ferguson pipe is 304 stainless steel. 3inch mandrel bend. All tig welded.

    • @tyferguson564
      @tyferguson564 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, how thick would u say the spacers are for the cross member?

    • @pugbug288
      @pugbug288  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ty ferguson around 1/4 of an inch. It’s all about getting that pinion angle.

    • @tyferguson564
      @tyferguson564 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, so the driveshaft would need to be inn for this angle to be set and what degree would I be looking for?? Sorry for all the questions

    • @pugbug288
      @pugbug288  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ty ferguson I don’t remember. My ride height is different as the car is lowered. It’s going to be difficult to say an angle that works for your car.

    What stall converter did you use?

    • @pugbug288
      @pugbug288  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I made the mistake of using the stock one at first. Now I have a Transmission Speciality’s 3000 stall. It’s one of the best things I did to the car.

      Pugbug288 what issues did you have with the stock converter?

    • @pugbug288
      @pugbug288  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@cameronware1114 The car drove fine but was a slug off the line at the track. It would launch at only 1100 rpm. On the street it’s enough to spin the tires off the line but in the track it just hooked and kinda bogged the motor until 3k+.
