I don’t specialise in street portraits but I do take them if I see someone who really grabs my eye. I am fairly introverted and found it difficult at first. But what I have found is that almost nobody says no unless they are in a hurry. A few ask what I will do with them. And with everybody I offer to send them one or two of the shots. A few weeks ago I got this back: “Oh! I like these photos so much !!Thank you for the wonderful memories you gave me in the last hours before I left Hong Kong~~♡” - just go for it.
Dear Paul, your highly impressive photos are created by exactly this style of photography. Calm, attentive and interested in people, this is exactly what creates those energetic images like this wonderful portrait. Simply brilliant... I like your videos, they are so wonderfully motivating, thank you for that!
The photo that you chose Paul is the one for me but not because of the chair. The man's eyes and his posture convey a sense of vulnerability. The eyes are making a real connection with the camera. I would have loved a little more contrast but the lighting is what it is. A very beautiful portrait.
I love the image of the guy sitting at the table with the open door left, and the pictures behind him. Looks so natural. I love your street image of the young woman, she is so beautiful and she would love that image of herself I am sure. Your channel is one of my top favourites now. Thanks.
Funny thing, I agree on both your favorite images and those were the two that stood out right away. To me it's clear why, they eyes, the look in their eyes is so special in those two images. They dreamy look of the woman, you just feel she is somewhere else. Unlike the shot in the pub where you seem have made a super special connection and he looks completely at easy, almost vulnerable. Superb portraits!
Hi Paul, I've been browsing your videos over the past few weeks and have been enjoying your work. I too shoot street portraits, mostly in Dublin. Happy to subscribe.
Loved both images you thought worked best. For me I was drawn mostly the lady, she looks like a Hollywood film star from the 50s a bit like a young Lauren Bacall. Pro mist filter for the win. 📷😁
Good evening Paul, the set of portraits on film are really good (you know that). Beyond that some of them exude something special, i am thinking of the Jorge outside (the first I think) and Jorge seated by the window (your favourite). Both in my eyes carrry an emotional load of quiet sadness as in lookinng at time in arrested motion. Oh well its a photograph, stupid me. Still they both instillate the sense of a world on edge. regarding the street photos I also was arrested by the soft quality to it giving it a more gentle look and feel than a lot of digital street photos. May be a mistake, but a happy one. Also gets my vote for that specific reason.
Wonderful video Paul and such a beautiful set of images. In the first set I loved #2 as a great environmental portrait of a bartender. I liked how the contrast separated your well centered subject from a busy, but lighter, background. However, he does have more of a distant expression, which creates a less welcoming feel (for me as a viewer). Even with that, I still think this is a great image. Number 4 was my other favorite. I love the mood, the angle, and general feeling of it, especially his more vulnerable expression while sitting in an empty room. After viewing that set at least three times, #4 did edge out #2 for me as the overall winner. The second set was easy. Your “mistake” shot took my breath away. There’s so much to enjoy in this image, a veritable feast for the eyes. I’m wondering, they say “we learn from our mistakes”…what did you learn? I learned that I want to make more mistakes! ;^) Well done, as always.
Thanks so much for your take on the images. And thanks for your kind words and positivity. I wish I could make more of those mistakes! I guess I can’t repeat that one really!
Paul, is was a great video! I was also immediately drawn to the same portrait of George and of the lady in the street! It’s amazing how some photos just capture you and hold you spellbound. I did want to ask you how you metered those portraits of George. What techniques did you use? I’m assuming all those portraits were shot with available light? Thank you!
Wonderful photos! My fave is the old man, his look is such a micro-social commentary. Would love to know your post processing and how you get such richness of tones, if that's something you're willing to share.
Hard to pick a favourite from that portrait session, Paul, you both did brilliantly, he's an absolute natural isn't he😍. One question, do people ever ask what you're going to do with the street portraits or do you tell them and get that out the way? Just wondering if there are people who'd be surprised to see themselves on TH-cam? I think I'd need a model release form here 🙄
@@paulreidphotography I have a very stupid additional question to that: In an earlier video you said that you offer people to send them their photographs, so you have to get their email or some other form of contact. How can you tell who was who at the end of the day?
George kind of looks like a gene-splice of Paul Reid and actor John Krasinski. Another terrific, timeless image. The photo of the wistful looking girl is so meticulous for a fleeting moment in time, it's just great.
Very nice pictures, Paul. Did you deliberately compose all the photos of the man in the bar so that he is always exactly in the centre of the picture? I actually try to avoid that. For me it looks a bit like the focusing indicator on the ground glass is the father of the image composition. 😉
@@paulreidphotography you've got a very good personality for it. I used to work for a local magazine and had to do a "street style" page like that, I used to hate it.
Dear Paul, I love your work - videos as much as photography. When I last had to name my favourite photographer to get into a Facebook group, guess whose name I typed? (At the moment I'm stuck though with my homework for the online course which comes down to: "Create a master shot." 🤣 But that's another story.) Anyway, I would be super interested in a video on filters on the Leica Q2 monochrom. Do you think you might like to make one?
Brilliant photos of your "brother" , timeless!
Your 'mistake' photograph is absolutely gorgeous (he said through gritted teeth) :)
@@garymepsted9741 thanks so much! Happy mistake!!
hahaha!
Had to wait 5:12 to see this awesome series of the man in the bar. Compliments!
Thanks very much! I had to wait 3 days!!
My favourite too Paul, the dreamy look works so well. Has a Marilyn Monroe type of of photo feel about it. Always love the tones on your photographs 👌
Thanks so much!!! I love that photo and I couldn’t recreate it!!!
@@paulreidphotography the fact that you cant recreate it is what makes it so special
Excellent, Paul. Well done. I love the portraits

Georg's photos are fantastic and they look so timeless. The images could just as easily have been taken in the 1920s!
Thanks so much! Yeah sometimes just shooting in film helps drive the mood
These look so vintage Paul! Fantastic work
Thanks mate!! Really appreciate it
Immediately knew which one was special - I bet most do. Beautiful!

Absolutely fantastic captures. Your work is so inspiring.

I also liked that photo of George the best. Many were excellent, but that one looked like it could have been taken in the 1800s. Nice!
Incredible photographs. You really catch the essence of the people in your portraits

I picked your favorite portrait of the bartender. Brilliant shot! And, of course, the girl. I know you too well. Beautiful.

5:27 Paul! That shot at 7:07 is wonderful. It’s a little ‘Blade Runner’ imho✌️🇦🇺
Love Blade Runner so I love that you think that!

Model release forms are just too much here. It’s like a contract and nobody wants that. I get verbal and message confirmation

Your favourite image of the girl is amazing. As a first look it could be mistaken for an AI image. Bless your filter mistake, love it.
Yeah that’s true! Almost too good to be true!
agree with the girl with hands to chin... classic! I prefer the Gentleman with both elbows on the round table
That’s great that you love that one!! I’m glad

Tri X and 50mm TT artisan 1.4! Glad you like them

I just compose how it feels right. I do a lot of central compositions. It’s just how my brain works.
What was the strength of the pro mist filter?
I feel the softness and the light blooming from the street
