I bought the M10M and then sold the Q2M. I have added the M11M, however I still grab the M10M more often. Something about the files is still more appealing when I make prints.

Hi Paul. I sold my Q2M, a camera that I enjoyed so much and was the first camera I picked up when I left home, I brought an M11M with a 35mm & 75mm Voitlander lens. I'm still coming to terms with range finder focusing something I've not done for 50+ years. I love it. (Full Stop). I wanted a more flexible camera rather than be stuck using the 28mm on the Q2 ... I may well be adding a 28 or 50mm next year. I still have a Q3 for colour. I loved my Q2 but move on or stagnate. I'm now 70 and the M11M will be my last ever camera. I look forward to seeing your results from the M11M.

Dear Paul, I am extremely excited! All the reasons you have listed that led to the Q2m >> M10 mo. switch are the same reasons why I never will buy one! And even if it were different: you are and will remain an excellent photographer and person, but your photography has taken things to the next level! The Q2 is a top-notch device, everything that was true in this context yesterday is still true today. It is not better or worse, it is simply different. I am happy for you and your new camera, because it will release a great deal of inspiration and creativity! Your video is great, because luckily it has not become a justification. Rather, the impulse is to rethink whether what we are using is actually the right thing and suits us.
Thank you very much for that! Best regards, Dirk

You are an amazing photographer who has ‘outgrown’ the Q2M so I’m excited to see more photographs and stories from you with the new setup. I agree with re-setting the muscle memory when we switch camera, I had the same (still adjusting) when I added Nikon Zf to my XT2. I thought it would be more straight forward but found it much heavier than XT2 that I have to re-adjust.

Paul, great to hear the thought process into your decision. I think we all struggle with our gear and finding the right mix and while you've sort of been the unofficial Q2M ambassador with your amazing work, I guess I shouldn't be surprised some people would take your decision personally. TH-cam has created a monster! Anyway, can't wait to see your progression with the M10M and the multitude of lenses. I had 5 M mount lenses at one point for my M11 and pared down to 3 and sometimes that is too much stress for me when deciding what to take out. That is one advantage with any Q is that the decision has already been made for you. But wait, there is the Q3 43 now!!!

Thanks for this, Paul. I have the Q2 Monochrom, and I don't expect to replace it, as I shoot Nikon for my client work. But I'm interested in what you said about the Q2M's 'flat' files. I've never really understood this - is it an issue with the sensor itself, or the way Adobe 'develops' the raw files? Do you have a video where you go into this? In any case, it seems I always need to boost contrast and clarity to get the best from my Q2M. What did you do?

    • @paulreidphotography
      @paulreidphotography  หลายเดือนก่อน

The flat files aren’t really a problem as you can easily make a preset that puts a curve on it to create contrast. However I got so used to those flat files I started to like them. I’d rather start from scratch than have someone decide what contrast is in my RAW. I would always add contrast in post with contrast, blacks and whites, and the clarity tool

Interestingly M10Ms seems to have rising price. M10 family is considered as master piece of reliability in oposite to M11 (at least rumors based reputation), which might be the cause. While waiting for M10M to be below 4kEuro, I've grabbed new Pentax M3 MarkIII Mono with feeling of supporting niche maker.

Paul, you have no need to apologize or explain that you swapped from using a Q2 Monochrom to an M10 Monochrom.
You never acted as a Leica salesperson. Even if someone purchased a Q2 Monochrom based on viewing your photographs, they got a fantastic camera, and thus don’t have any reason to gripe to you. I had a Q2M and regret selling it. Nevertheless, I have an M11 Monochrom, but still miss the feel of the Q2M (I also have a digital CL, M11, and SL2). I recently picked up a Q3 43, and love it.
If I was younger, I’d acquire photo kit at a much slower rate. However, I’m far along the back 9 of life, and don’t want to wait to experience cameras I’d like to use.

@ I sometimes think that Leica Wetzlar should name their next building on the campus after me. I purchase most of my Leica kit from Leica Store Miami, and they said several of their customers have far more lenses and cameras than I do. I don’t feel so guilty anymore.

Hi Paul. I have recently bought a Q2M. One of the reasons was because I liked the photos you have taken. In the past I’ve had the opportunity to use a M10 monochrom. It was a beautiful camera, but it wasn’t for me. It’s horses for courses, I guess.. The Q2M does everything I need from a camera. I look forward to watching your future videos. 🙂👍

Having owned a Q2M and an M10M side by side for a year, I sold the former in early September. The simplicity and ease of use, the ability to see in the dark, and the macro function were tough to say goodbye to, but in reality I struggled with the 28mm focal length as a do everything lens. Other focal lengths called to me, hence the addition of an M body. Then I found myself carry both bodies. The flexibility of having multiple focal lengths for a single body outweighed the conveniences of the Q2M. It was, as in your case, a personal choice.
What you don't say here is that as a professional you have different criteria than hobbyists. A camera is a tool, albeit an expensive one. I would argue that when a repair is eventually needed, the M10M will be easier and faster to service than the Q2M. Time out of your hands = lost income.
I have read that the Q2M is likely to be the last monochrom Q variant. The Q3's hybrid autofocus system is dependent on having a Bayer filter, which is excluded from monochrom sensors. So to those who are disappointed that Paul moved on to the M10M, you may just have your hands on an all time classic.

    • @paulreidphotography

Hey Paul, I did the exact opposite because of my eyesight becoming less accurate with aging unfortunately. I sold all my M Gear accumulated over the years approx 6 years ago and was waiting for a new spark. It came with the Q2M and is much easier for me as I do not have to worry too much about focus. Yes it can still miss it and yes you can use hyperfocal wirh M systems. Of course I do regret a little bit the various lenses (I had a M7 and M9-P) but the simplicity of one camera is so nice. In fact, you have Pros and Cons in every scenario, the most important is that you enjoy the result using your gear... even if you were indeed a highly convinced "ambassador" of the Q2M through your videos on YT ;-) All the best with your new setup. Cheers

There are a lot of us who don’t really give a damn what camera you choose to use. Photos are what counts and some of the photographic greats of the past used cameras that were primative by modern standards. Thread-mount Leicas with tiny optical viewfinders and separate rangefinder window come to mind.

I very much understand the desire to use a digital M camera body. It was the Summilux-M 50mm ASPH that originally prompted me to buy into the Leica M system, in April 2018, starting with a pre-owned Summilux and a new M10. Six year and six months later, that same lens remains my favorite. A Q-series camera can shoot in cropped mode, but a Q’s lens cannot fake what a Summilux-M 50mm ASPH can do. I added a pre-owned M Type 246 Monochrom, while my M10 was down for repair, after a mishap. I could, probably, enjoy using a Q-series camera, but cannot justify the expense, for what would be a supplemental, niche camera. If I need AF, I will use one of my older DSLRs.

I have the Q2M but understand the move to the M10 Monochrom. I really do not have the extra $$$ it would take me to move to M series. As a professional photographer and it becomes a business expense and a business tool, then it all makes sense. But I will enjoy the Q2M for a long time to come. Unfortunately, I do not have any Leica lenses in my inventory that would facilitate any move to the M system. I do find the limitation of the Q2M makes me more creative.

Yes it heavier than an M6, or for me, heavier than the M9M. But also better, as in finally a quiet shutter, better finder and better high iso performance.
But also change of “Muscle memory “ when editing files, and up one step of shutter speed for getting sharp photos. The simplicity of the Q2M, one lens one film and perhaps auto focus in some cases sounds tempting, or a callback to my first round of M6, only with 28mm Elmarit-m v3 (and only Kodak BW400CN) One year with that kit was great, It still tempts me now and then, mostly now :)

I’ve got used to the weight now! However I do prefer the feel of the M6. I miss the AF sometimes on the Q2M! I’m not going to lie, if I could have kept both the Q2M and M10M I would. One thing it’s proved to me is that it’s all about just using a camera again and again and again until you don’t think about it much anymore

Great post and I love your work! Re the M experience - So slightly off topic - I'm very conflicted about my Ms. My first was the Leica M6, which predictably was the gateway to the M11. I use both extensively and I love the rangefinder experience. My problem is that I love it way more with film than digital. I"m feeling more and more like I want that EVF for my digital work, it feels like it's the right fit. For me the rangefinder enhances shooting with film, I couldn't imagine using anything else, but it is starting to feel like a limitation with digital. So it's not that I don't get the advantage of the RF, it's that I also get the advantage of an EVF for digital. I'd love to hear your thoughts, and of course that of others, on this. (I'm considering trading the M11 for the new Q3 43)

I think the word 'familiar' is the key. the Q cameras are possibly more intuitive to operate and the M10 -M11 cameras add the manual focus and perspective control involved with the various focal length lenses available. This creates a bit of pre planning need in advance of going out photographing.

I shoot with a Fuji X-Pro3 which has an optical and electronic viewfinder, so I can do either zone focus or auto. I shoot with Fuji 35mm 1.4 lens, Fuji 35mm f2 (weather sealed) lens, and Fuji 23mm f2 (weather sealed). Also have a Sigma 56mm 1.4 lens, but it doesn’t have an aperture ring (have to use a dial to change aperture in camera). The X-Pro3 features 26.1 MP, and the SOOC jpegs are great (I use the Acros monochrome film recipe with adjusted contrast). I love the 50mm focus (which is what my 35mm lenses are on APSC). Fuji is rumored to produce an X-Pro4 in 2025. I like the Leica M10 Mono, but my reservations include: Leica repairs can take months if something goes wrong, Leica costs a fortune, no weather sealing, Leica glass is a fortune (thank God for TT Artisan and related lenses), zone focusing can be hard in some situations. But then, I have not held nor shot with an M camera. I’m afraid if I visit my camera shop and play with the floor model, all my reservations might evaporate.

    • @JJ_Photo
      @JJ_Photo หลายเดือนก่อน

What most people don't get (before they get the M system), is that shooting a rangefinder is very different than an EVF camera. If you are used to having all the info in the EVF - including that you also can see if you exposure is right instantly - a M camera is very challenging to use. You learn how to focus fairly quick. But you will have more wrong exposed images than before. Your compositions will not be as sharp, since you are not seeing exactly what the sensor see. So a bit cropping will often be necessary. You can of course use the rear screen. But then you could just use another mirrorless camera.
Look at so many of the Leica M TH-camrs. They buy the M11, make a lot of videos about it. And still use the rear screen for composing. A bit strange, since there are so many other cameras that would be better in that regard. And much cheaper - even lighter with better ergonomics. Never understood this. But hey if they have the money and thinks an M11 will make their life fun, fine by me. I have a M10, Q and SL. Love the M10 and the sensors rendering. But for most work the Q and SL system is so much better and easier to work with. I love the Leica camera line. But I will also say that my images are not better than if I had a Nikon Zf or Fuji xpro. Maybe the Zf actually is the most interesting camera these days.

If neede I also use a red or yellow filter. I had the M9M, the 246, But no doubt the M10M is the best. camera. I cant comment on the M11M. As to the Q2M , I can't stand the the viewfinder ( I am so used to the simple optical system. ) As I wrote to you before /your photos are lovely but I always found your portrait faces too bright almost burned out. From what I see now I think there is a great change and the faces are not as white. I also did not like the size ( too small and too light ) of the Q2M and as said the VF w2hich pushed me to take photos whatching the screen instead of the VF. I like the manual focusing but as I am getting old ( 77) I guess I will sometime have to decided upon an autofocus ( eye sight} camera. I also shoot alot of Jpg as I love contrasty, black and sharp photos saying that the raw files are also beautiful

Theres an extremely heavy lens profile that the camera installs into the raw file in a way that you cant turn off in lightroom. I found a way you can turn it off in other raw editing software but then the image looks a bit ugly.
The biggest problem with the lens prophile is that in higher ISO (which this camera should be great for) you get this strange warped noise pattern. I have seen this issue in a lot of monochrom cameras but if you turn off the lens profile it fixes the problem which is what I do for the m10 monochrom. but you cant easily do that for the Q2 monochrom.
another side problem was there was a bit of dynamic range brick wall with the Q2 monochrom.
The q2 monochrom doesnt have 1.2 meter marker on the lense. which is annoying but more of a minor issue.
My leica M10 monochrom doesnt have any of these issues. Its a brillient camera. It has a life sentence with me.

It was originally the M10 monochrom I wanted! But it was way cheaper to get a Q2M

I don't follow your channel because of your chosen camera or whether you shoot digital or film, I follow you because of your style and the images you produce, so to me the camera is irrelevant. My perception of the M10 images shown are that they are perhaps a little more 'grainy' and have a wider tonal range, more grays! Would be interested in your take on this? Always look forward to your videos! Thanks.😀

I’m still very much learning! I just don’t know fully how to treat the files yet. It’s totally different than the q2m

Just listening to the start of this video and your not responsible for other peoples insecurities and childish complaining about you getting rid of the Q2M people need to think for themselves and grow up by the way Paul great work 👍🇮🇪

I was a pro! Age and health had me retired. As a pro, I Never could have afforded Leica digital! Reliability, time needed for services or adjustments! A no! Someone attended a Magnum workshop and the Magnum guy seeing his digital Leica said, "No pro can afford that camera!".I use Leica-M film boxes..M6 and favorite M3. 35mm, 50mm and a 135mm! That's it! Usually use 50mm. Sad you need to apologize to viewers.. Internet has no shame!
I posted not bothering to repair a Nikon-F.. I bought a well used F3! I received tons of hate! My F's have been hard used since 1971! I can only imagine what you were showered with! Enjoy the M10 mono.

Well…my 70th birthday is this Thursday (Halloween), the same day I leave for my “Fine Art Photography” Exhibition in Yokohama…and then I see this video. As I’m an Enthusiast Photographer shooting dedicated BNW with the Q2 Monochrom AND on a fixed-income retirement pension…I simply do not have the option to invest in an M10 Monochrom plus multiple lenses. Oh well…it appears it’s time to wish you the best as you push forward on your Photography Journey. Happy Birthday, not…

Dave the Q2M is still the camera you need for what you are doing. You wouldn’t be able to get those incredible macro shots for a start off with an M10M. Not only is there no macro function, the files have not got the same detail as the Q2M. My direction is going more towards portraits and shooting film alongside a digital monochrome camera. You’re still using the right camera. I will miss the Q2M

Has anyone here traded their Leica m10m for the m10r and regretted it?

Its ok to let go the Q2M but not to trade with the M10M. M11M is the way to go. Not the m10m.

@ of course! You thinking upgrading already. why you downgrade to m11m? Return it and get the m11m. Theres no way you want that lower grade m10m. Always go for the top
Prize! M11m is so advance you can even see the future!

I don't get it at all, as your choice is your choice, at the same time I don't why people follow TH-camrs every gear / brand swaps.
It isn't the camera, it's how you use it ....A Leica doesn't make you a better photograper if you have no skill in the first place.
I have an M6 Titanium with a Voightlander 35mm Color Skopar f2.5 and a 7 Artisans 28mm f5.6, but I prefer my EOS1 if shooting film because the rangefinder experience doesn't do anything for me.
I'd prefer a digital Leica, but
