But at the end of the line, our rosters were INSANELY good (Andrew Whitworth, Reggie Nelson, AJ Green, Geno Atkins, Carlos Dunlap etc.) during this period, but Dalton was always the thing holding us back as much as I hate to admit it. @@frb5237 100%. At least after the Super Bowl, there was a little semblance of hope, that this was just the beginning and we’d maybe have another chance. Also, as much as that holding call pissed me off, the SB ending was at least understandable. That meltdown against the Steelers was dumbfounding. Had the win in our hands, and then it was snatched away in an instant.
I remember watching that game with some friends at a sports bar. I was standing up pacing back and forth after the Burfict INT, thinking “This is it! I’m 29 (at the time) years old and I’m finally going to witness a playoff win for the first time!” (I was alive but too young for SB XXIII & the ‘90 playoff win). After the game was over, I was sooo angry. I got into my car, let out a huge yell, to the point of seeing stars. After that, tbh my passion died quite a bit. I still watched almost every Sunday but I wasn’t keeping up with all the news on the daily like I used to, and I had no problem just turning it off if they were losing and I wasn’t being entertained.
Then 2021 happened, and it reignited the passion and I care more now. I know that sounds like bandwagoning, and if that’s what you wanna call it, fine. I still went to a game each season and had fun. I just wasn’t really emotionally invested anymore. That’s how much that playoff meltdown hurt.

Dalton did suck in the playoffs, but so did 3 other QB's under Marvin Lewis. Jon Kitna, Carson Palmer and AJ McCarron all had passer ratings of 68 or worse, and none led the offense to more than 17 points.
The problem was Marvin Lewis, who was 0-7 in the playoffs overall. He never added any wrinkles to the offense. Never had his team prepared for big games.

I’m so happy that there’s been so much improvement with refreshing coaching and obviously Burrow’s ability to make great plays actually come through. At first it definitely felt like luck was getting the bengals to win in the playoffs appose to better team performance, but with such a new roster of talented players I hope in time the bengals adjust and finally win a bowl and at the very least maintain consistency as an afc title contender.

I remember being at the ER for my Mom during that Colts v Bengals game and they actually had it on the TV, so I was watching it cause there wasn’t too much to do and I love football, win win, so I’m watching…and literally all I could remember is almost walking up to the front desk and saying I need to be seen because Andy Dalton’s play made me so sick. But refrained because I knew they wouldn’t appreciate it 😂

@@davidbosley7126 with burrow, the bengals for sure win the Super Bowl in 2015. Even with Dalton they nearly got the 1 seed, and likely would have had it if Dalton didn’t get hurt against the browns and missed the last few games. NE and Denver were both good, but heavily flawed teams. Burrow could have beat both of them and he for sure beats Carolina in the Super Bowl.

Naturally I started watching the bengals as my high school is the tigers and the 2012 season is when I started really watching ball. I remember being so excited for a qb and wr (I was literally 11 when they got drafted lol) and I dedicated the next 5 years to the most heart wrenching team in sports lol then the following couple years were even worst as we just sucked and weren't going anywhere. Thank goodness the one year we got the 1 pick was a year with great qbs

I'm not a Bengals fan but I still recall this era for them. It was far better compared to how things were for the franchise in say, the 1990s. Really, the Bengals used to be so bad. They got a lot better in Dalton and Lewis time there, but eventually you see that there was a clear boundary the team could not overcome. They had some good names there but couldn't go to the next level.

Probably it's been so long now I don't remember the specifics. I take no shame in saying I reveled watching Dalton's failure in the playoffs. That era of Bengals teams (Palmer to Dalton) were loaded with a lot of talent, and are a great example of how a team can be good enough to make the playoffs but not good enough to win in the playoffs. Palmer went to the playoffs twice with the Bengals and lost both of those too. What was amazing was how they could manage to humble and beat better teams in the regular season - as a Ravens fan I just KNEW that the Ravens were going to lose 1 or both games against the Bengals each year and the wins were going to be ugly and disappointing. The one thing all Dalton's playoff losses share is a 100% reliance on the passing game (the opposing defense made them one dimensional) and a ferocious pass rush that kept him under pressure and unable to get the passes off. That's more of a team and scheme weakness and I don't put the blame on him. The only reason he has that many playoff losses is because he got that team to the playoffs a lot.

Lifelong Bengals fan since the early 80s and I feel that the structure of the team (i.e., how it was built) and ultimately the results that the team produced were largely a function of what Marvin Lewis and Mike Brown were capable of delivering, and comfortable with executing/creating.
Therefore, attributing all of the team's failures on just Andy Dalton would be harsh (although he was certainly part of the problem).
Essentially, Lewis and Brown were the architects of the middling teams that they had created. Brown likely required the team follow a strict budget and Lewis was adept at providing Brown with a good but not great team that could operate within that strict budget - year after year.
In the late 80s Cincinnati went on a SB run where in an interview a sports journalist remarked admiringly to Paul Brown that Cincinnati had managed to make the SB while having the lowest payroll in the NFL. PB responded combatively (and yet boastfully at the same time) by saying that one can build competitive teams without having to give out the bank.
What is the significance of this statement? I'm sure it entirely summarizes how Mike Brown has run the team and how he has aspired to run his team... until more recently when he has finally relinquished control of the team to the next generation (coincidently with the arrival of Joe Burrow).
