I think I heard that part when he started to get his gun was improvised by the actor, or it was the actors' idea for that part, and the director loved that idea.
Since the ship is in space, where there is no atmosphere or oxygen, smoke cannot form as it does on Earth. Instead, the fire would cause the material that is burning to convert into gases and particles. this would not appear as smoke but rather as a gaseous or hazy cloudiness that spreads from the location where the fire is burning.

Friendly reminder that back during The Phantom Menace, when Obi is fighting Darth Maul and sends half of his dual saber flying off, you can see smoke starting to rise from the wall. Later in a wide shot you can see that his saber half has become embedded in the wall and has started a small fire near it. It's not a Star Wars graphic issue, it's a Disney one
I remember a theory I had for the 9th episode where General Hux would be revealed to be a Sith Lord, and be the true villain of the sequel trilogy and that would have been better than what they did in episode IX where they gave the Star Wars community a massive middle finger with palpitine coming back.

I've always questioned the line "long live the Supreme Leader" because though Hux is in Kylo's clutch, Hux never wants to acknowledge him as being bigger or better. But that line was probably there to also allude to "Snoke" still being alive
Yeah it was very poorly written, Kylo should have choked him then exclaimed "No. The supreme leader is stronger than ever" implying that it was now a title passed to him rather than having it where Kylo Ren agrees with Hux then Hux says the opposite
