Switch Labo VR: Zelda Breath of the Wild + Mario Odyssey VR modes tested!

  • Just how well do Nintendo's big titles translate to a VR experience? Courtesy of a free update we can now find out - both Zelda Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey have an option to support the 'Toy-Con' goggles, as supplied with the Labo VR kit. Build the goggles out of card, slide the switch in, enable the mode - and away you go! Except, the results aren't necessarily all they could have been, as Tom finds out.

This analysis is true, and it is good work as usual. We'll never thank you enough for the work you do at DF !
But I don't think it is entirely fair on Nintendo to conclude that it simply does not work well enough (even if it is true according to a technical value system).
The philosphy behind Mario and Zelda VR is nothing but showing the game under a new day. I don't think it has been meant to stand on its own. To me, it has to be exprienced as a way to rediscover places, atmosphere and characters we love. A good opportunity to revisit what is so familiar, while keeping it fresh, for 10, 20, 30 minutes, nothing more. In my case, it has been enough to trigger again these thrills that make these 2 games so special to me, not exempt from nostalgia. In this sens, it felt totally satisfying to me, and I would be more than glad to see such updates for their past and future first-party games.
It may seems very personal to this point (and it is), but "We recommend taking a look through the VR Goggles when there's something interesting to see, like a location with a great view, a favorite character, or a favorite piece of equipment. The concept of this update is to add a little twist to the world of Hyrule to give players, even those who've played the game a lot, a reason to come back and get even more enjoyment out of the game. This is why we have designed this new feature so that it can be used with your existing save data." Said the technical director Takuhiro Dohta. The intention is the same for Mario I feel, otherwise, why would they have botehred with making this unlockable "Jump Up, Super Star show" thing ? (yes, to trigger nostalgia, and that's the point). And VR is a very efficient way to achieve this because it creates a stronger proximity (and immersion) with the world and its characters; even with this cardboard setup.
For other than that (i.e, making a solid gameplay experience that can be played for more than half an hour) yes, I agree (and nintendo would probably do as well) It does not work well enough. But it is not what these updates were meant for, it is a clever moove, in its own right.

It would be better if they implemented real vr camera controls. As a owner for two different real vr headsets, this is a joke and such a shitty implementation of VR. Obviously they didn't put in the work needed to make BOTW work, if that was even possible, and just hoped slapping on a half baked mode would trick Nintendo fans into throwing them more money. It was really a quick grab scheme and doesn't come close to the support other companies like Sony are properly giving vr.

I have really enjoyed the VR experience with Zelda (I thought Mario Odyssey’s implementation was pretty underwhelming though). The only complaints I have are the head tracking like he mentioned and the difficulty seeing my hearts in the upper left hand corner (although that may be partly due to some eye muscle damage I have from a past surgery). Overall though it’s one of the few VR experiences I’ve ever wanted to repeatedly come back to and the cordless, easy to take off set up of Labo VR has been really great.

There's no doubt that Zelda VR is rougher as a VR experience compared to LABO VR games. I didn't experience any discomfort with the LABO VR games but I did get a touch woozy with Zelda VR. BUT, it's still a cool novelty. I loved the sense of scale; huge monsters and machines look huge, like your looking up at them, getting up close with a guardian is awesome. I spent hours and hours playing Zelda in VR. BUT, there's only one way to do that comfortably... Sit down with your elbows resting on a table so the view doesn't move about and then lift your elbows a bit when motion aiming arrows and to look about every so often when sailing through the air for example. Anchor yourself and get right away from any notion of 'looking about in VR' and you'll be fine. Yes, that's not quite VR, but it can still be a fun novelty if you're a bit of a big kid. I spent a few days rediscovering the landscape of Hyrule and really loving it. As a free update I think it was a really neat add from Nintendo.

Nice video, as always! On a side note, if you want to have an idea how the 3D looks but you don't own a Labo VR, you can use the method used for seeing stereograms (google it if you don't know what I am talking about). You will get a 3D image without any glasses. This works not only on the Switch itself, but also on any source material that shows the two images side-by-side, such as screenshots, the relevant video sections above, etc. You can also use this method to see the 3D effect on Switch while docked. Just bear in mind the method is somewhat tricky to do if you don't know how.

nintendo should just do stereoscopic 3d for it for 3d tv via half side by side or half top and bottom in dock mode just half the height of 1080p (540) and split the width into two (960 for the left and right eye) and then the 540 height - stretch the height back to normal for a full 1080p screen for side by side and for top and bottom - stretch the 960 width to 1920 for the top and bottom to make a full 1080p screen.

I find the Zelda mode is best played with the first-person view mod, originally for Cemu but it works on a Switch running Atmosphere. It just replaces all cameras with the viewpoint used for the sheikah stone viewer and still uses gyro to look around, but it makes the VR mode bearable for me since the headtracking just turns your head. Though it's still not 3DOF head tracking, just pitch and yaw since that's all the analog stick (and the gyro in the VR mode) does. Some would argue it isn't head tracking at all without roll.
The 3D effect is nice though, and this video made me want to try the Mario Odyssey cutscenes I didn't bother to check out.

5:30 All VR lenses blow up the center pixels. However there are hacks to render more pixels in the center to counter balance that. The Switch can't pull that off, this is why you have lower resolution in the center.
Their next console should be a VR set with optional TV output. I thought the switch would be that, but Nintendo always disappoint.

Good luck trying to get those 3D lenses rigged up to your face properly though. You can at least see what the VR mode looks like without having to pay money though. Nintendo of all companies these days should have known better with Zelda in VR. Every company dipping their toes in VR say that 60fps is the bare, minimum you want to avoid being sick. Zelda can't even maintain 30 so that's gonna make for some upset stomachs.
I tried the labo mini games and they were interesting enough but I couldn't imagine doing Zelda with that framerate. The resolution has gotta give ya eye strain too. PSVR is low with (I think) a 1080p image divided between 2 eyes? That's pretty harsh vs even the oculus at 1080p per eye or Windows Mixed Reality which is 1440p per eye.

Tried this today, can say I will not use it again due to the camera motion, low resolution and fps.
The reason the center is lower in resolution is your second guess combined with field of view.
The lens correction compresses the edges of the rendered image, it's a fisheye/barrel distortion, combine this with the source being rectilinear and high field of view which stretches things further from the center.
The result is a blurry center as it's tiny in the raw image, this while the periphery gets more detail as it's using relatively more of the pixels.
I hope this makes sense 😅

A bit of an unpopular opinion: I was actually waiting for the VR camera implementation for Zelda, as you can possibly enjoy all of your games in VR that way: imagine the Witcher in VR for example. Yes VR works best for first person but honestly I don't think we should restrict ourself to that. But I will say the thought of holding the labo VR to your head the whole time is atrocious xD

A third person viewpoint that actually maps properly to your head would be pretty cool, I think. Like you could look up and tilt the camera higher, but still rotate around Link with the right stick as usual. This just feels like a lazy hack of the original game rather than a fully fleshed-out implementation. Even the Mario Odyssey levels, as short as they are, feel like they have more effort put into them than this.

While Nintendo VR would be awesome, especially Mario Kart-in the same way that GT was sold as one of the pack-in games for a PSVR bundle (which I got specifically because of the ability to look around, as you’re racing (not to mention doing so while in VR, which makes it as amazing as-the LABO version is as much “VR” as your average empty headset made to work with cell phones - the kind like some of the tougher and more comfortable headsets (although “LABO VR” is neither of those things), that ended life at GameStop, for $3 apiece five years ago, in the clearance bin. I know, because I bought them all to give my family as Christmas presents, being the most interesting pieces of garbage that seemed cool and would last a few months before being piled in the basement next to the gifts of George Foreman Grilles and Ninja Air Fryers.
Especially once you figure out that taking off/putting on your phone’s protector cover every time you want to jump in is more of a pain than it’s worth, for ten year-old “VR tech” that’s really “VRINO,” because the LABO VR (or using the Switch as the screen in some other headset, like the ones from Gamestop) has _none_ of the most important/enjoyable attributes of VR - such as being made of material that can handle some hits, working from a VR desktop/“dashboard”/home screen and OS, and having a modicum of VR games, along with everything else that makes VR an experience, not a way to play a round of XYZ game with no general coms with friends to talk between/while deciding on games to play, which LABO VR fans (who outed themselves as being into VR, despite always having said it were crap (based on the Virtual Boy, I guess... ) quickly found out, once they and other started actually getting/using it - a huge amount of money for a total POS made of cardboard and two garbage lenses.
I remember, though, when it first came out, when Switch fanbois thought LABO VR were going to be some kind of sensation - to the tune of actually taking market share from Oculus, Valve, and PiMax, etc., which could only be the belief of someone who’s never actually played a dedicated VR headset. It got much funnier, when that hype lasted about two to three weeks, once those LABO VR fans saw what a giant waste their $75 connected pieces of perforated cardboard were...
The funniest thing, though, were those fans who were proclaiming that LABO/Switch VR were going to destroy Sony PSVR, as well as fully dedicated VR hardware, by companies like Oculus, that spent all their time designing far more than cardboard cutouts for phones - most of which have much better resolution than the Switch, which is all LABO VR did for the Switch. Now, they’re all down by the phone headsets and Foreman Grilles... Ha!
