  • A short video to follow up my initial review on my first set of STR Rally tyres used on my 1290 Super Adventure.
    I still love these tyres and are my favourite choice. However for a big powerful bike like the 1290 these won’t last long if you constantly ride hard on the throttle 😂😂😂😂

    Hi Ricardo,
    Thank you for all the interesting videos about the KTM 1290 SAS, I watched all! Now I bought a new one myself, with most options. Here’s my question, since I am tall, 1.90m:
    1) is there a special option to further increase the height of the bar? (I already have +5cm as per Powerparts)
    2) is there an option to lower the foot pdals etc to have more room for the legs?
    Greetings from Switzerland- if you are close by, let me know

      Hello mate. I have no idea where they are manufactured sorry. Probably a few places around the world if I had to guess and not just one place. No idea... However I have had a couple of sets and have used them hard and never experiences a puncture. Even on low tread.

      Hiya Bart!! Thanks for the message! Good question as I too have considered some proper sport tyre and I would buy the m9RR. I nearly did buy some but with my current type of road riding I needed a more touring based tyre for my road wheels.
      For pure fun and twisty roads I would not hesitate to get the Metz M9RR. Friends have a set and they love them. 👍👌
      There isn’t really anything else I would probably get if I were to be paying premium price for a sporty tyre. I actually am fine with the stock mitas but that’s just me 🫣😆👍

    I had an Indian FTR 1200 Rally that came with the STRs. The rear lasted 3k miles. The front looked great. I just replaced the rear. I had been considering these for my 1290 SAS, but knowing how fast the rear will wear I will be considered other options. The STR isn't 'cheap' either so it can get pricy changing out that rear so often.

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I am with you on that... they are not cheap by any means.. however still a dam good all round tyre. If you plan on riding at pace often and only on tarmac then you would do with a better option both for feedback on the road and cost for sure!

    Hi Rick, I did 6700 km with my first rear tire and I did a road trip last week across the Pyrénées and the rear tire is close to the end after 3500 km.
    Front tire seems still ok.
    I still like very much this tires and I was able to drive in a same way than with sport tires, even on wet roads, the behavior is really good.
    I am not sure to do really more with a sport tire when the bike is heavy with luggage and a lot of nice winding roads 😊
    So, I will continue with this tire and specially because the price is cheaper than a sport tire.

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      hey Austro! Nice to see you again mate.. I agree the tyre is so good its hard to want anything else. It does ride well on road.. But for me if I was touring with luggage I would definately go full road performace tyre instead. They would last longer and also handle better as that what they are designed for... STRs are great on road "for road/off road" biased tyre. If I was ot plannig on doing any offroad then I would not bother with STRS personally! But we are all different and thats what is great :)

    It is tough finding tires that can handle the power this bike puts down on the street and still return decent mileage. I have a RallZ rear on now and while it is great in the dirt it is a fairly drastic difference in traction on the road compared to the stock AX41 included with the R (still one of my favorite 50/50 tires). It looks like the new Metzler's have deep tread, but a relatively soft compound so it will be interesting to see how they fare.

      @RicardoYeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hiya William! Yeah I’m with you on that one mate. I’m running road tyres right now for the time being. Missing my STR rally’s though. Maybe back on them sooner than expected. Yeah mate had the RallZ great off road but Woah… on cold damp autumn tarmac they are scary 👍

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah added silica you would expect better wet weather grip. However given tread pattern they will always be a little on the sketchy side compared to a more road biased tyre. Even on road tyres in the wet I still ride carefully not even inducing that yellow TC light if I can help it :)

    I use my 1290 SAS on road and on dirt/gravel. I put a Continental TKC 80 on the front and a TKC 70 Rocks on the back. The TKC 80 on the front gives me the confidence I need on gravel but it is extremely noisy on pavement at highway speed.

    Good evening Rick , maybe you have to reconsider about the street only tyres. With an 80/20 pair of tyres you keep your bike's advance to ride on a light gravel surface(if needed) not loosing much on paved roads exept maybe the track days , but i suspect that if you don't have time for off road "games" you will either have for "motogp races"

    I'm sure that having 150 hp available at the twist of the wrist has something to do with that tyre wear! You may look into the Michelin Road 5 GT for your pavement only tyre. But any performance tyre is going to wear down faster than a touring tyre. Longevity means giving up some traction, which I don't think you'd be happy with....

    • @hungwasson1399
      @hungwasson1399 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just read Thor Blom-Bakke's comment. I hadn't been aware that Michelin has come out with a successor to the Road 5. Definitely check out the Road 6 GT, as he suggests. [GT versions of the Road series of tires are just constructed to deal with the mass of the big ADV bikes.]

    • @RicardoYeep
      @RicardoYeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Hung! Nice one mate and I think you know me already.. I think that knowing I will only be on road for while I dont mind sacrificing longevity for performance... The thing with the STRs wasnt the longevity issue alone. It was the fact I was not getting either longevity nor maximum performance for riding purely on tarmac. As it was never the plan and was intending to get another dirt day sooner. So I am all for an outright performance tyre or as close as...even if it means sacrificing longevity.. I will just replace a tyre when it needs to. I would by Super Corsas for summer if I could get a front tyre in the 19" but that not happening. So I am yet to see but sure the Mich 6 has good reviews for sure!

    I think I will get about 5000km out of my STR rear on a SAS 2021. 95% onroad. But 5% gravel roads always full throttle with spinning wheels. 😬
    The Mitas lastet around 6000km onroad but with a lot more high speed runs on the autobahn. I try to be a little bit more gentle on the throttle onroad with the STRs.
    Maybe the Dunlop Trailmax Mission lasts longer.

      Hiya Max good to see you again! Yeah with you completely on the Mitas and to be fair I would go back straight on them. I really liked them as a road tyre! I still may..... And definitely the trailmax Missions would be better than the STRS for longevity. They are a bit more road biased and tread pattern too more contact patch. But still a compromise tyre. Hi Paul... Yes but not at the low speed you are talking about. Also I cannot say it has anything to do with the STRs... The SAS or SAR are known to have steering wobble anyway. @RicardoYeep  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cummomoto hiya Paul. I have not completely eliminated it mate. There will always be some wobble and have come to terms with that.
      Main things for me was making sure both wheels were balances, I swapped the large screen for a SAR screen, swapped the standard stem wing mirrors for some small bar end mirrors, make sure I ran in sports suspension and / increase preload a bit more than normal, pinch up the triple clamps, make sure not top box during the test.. did a run and got 145 nice and steady and could have taken it another 2k rpm that was left.
      However the minute you add a top box with weight it will remove weight from the front end so will affect handling. This bike is the most sensitive bike I have ever owned when it comes to weight distribution and suspension setup. I think they could have done a better job on this aspect 🤦‍♂️😂👍
      Also one size does not fit all… just because this helped my bike doesn’t mean it will have same impact on yours (from what I have read over the last year) 🙏

      @@RicardoYeep Thanks mate. I have tried a few things and removing the Top Box altogether is the easiest solution.😂 I will balance the front wheel again as you suggested because i refitted it recently after pulling off a TKC, problem may be there. It was strange how fuel changed thedynamicc though, when the tank was full the wobble was clear ( no hands) when it was empty it was gone which is kinda the opposite of how i would have imagined it to be. Anyway, Thanks again enjoying your content as usual.
