    you do NOT change your tyre pressures because you have changed your tyres. you should run the pressure stated on your VEHICLE tyre placard. optimal pressure depends on teh bike, not the tyre.

    Hi Nicolai: Just a few words of encouragement here! My 2017 MS Endruro is in the garage waiting for weather to get better and me to find a job; 2020 was not a good year for many reasons. Any how, I just wanted to encourage you to keep posting your videos; it's refreshing to watch someone closer to my age doing their thing and sharing. Maybe when things pick up for me, I'll try the same.

      Hi Rick!
      Thanks for this nice message!
      Yes we are in challenging times because of what's going on.
      I am in the same situation as I also lost my job in 2020.
      To create a channel was in my mind for a long time. I took now the opportunity to actually have the time for it. It is challenging but fun!!!

    I’m not sure who is recommending such low tire pressures in Europe? Here in Australia it is not sold or recommended to run that low on the STR? For off road maybe but it’s debatable. Up your pressure to the same as the Trails and you’ll get better performance.

    • @spokewanderer
      @spokewanderer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Leo!
      Well, that is easy answered on who recommended such low tire pressure. Ducati itself recommends on tires with M+S (knobbies) this low tire pressure. In Europe, as everywhere are the Trail II as Factory tires (@2.4 bar ), for the STRs & Rally STRs indeed it is 1.6 bar to 1.8 bar.
      I tried the STR's with 2.4 bar and honestly they are to hard and slippery and don't feel right. With lower recommended pressure they glue to the road and just feel great.
      Haven't been riding in Australia, so yes it might be different recommendations on what pressure to use in your country.
      Overall it's a fantastic tire and the used pressure is also a little as per personal choice and feel.
      Safe Rides!

      optimal pressure depends on the BIKE, not the tyre. use your tyre placard, not whatever the tyre manufacturer says.
      and the pressure stamped on the tyre itself, is the MAXIMUM SEATING pressure - used only when you set the bead, if the bead won't seat under that pressure, you cant use it (or risk exploding it while trying to seat the beard), once seated you then reduce it to the proper pressure.

    So I put a set on my BMW 1250 GSA. It's a 50/50 tire. You could argue 60/40. They are good in the dirt. They are good on the tight street stuff. They make a loud "HMM" noice from 75-85 mph...very obnoxious. Then I got a flat rear in the dirt in the middle of no where that was not fixable. It ripped longways in the middle, across the knobs. I was being very aggressive in the rocky terrain, so I blamed myself for pushing too hard. I got a new rear and about 600 miles later I got another flat in the middle of no where..same deal, it split in the middle...no puncture. I was not being aggressive as I was scared of a flat....it flatted anyway. Do NOT buy these tires for a big heavy adventure bike like the 1250 GSA, unless you just putt putt around. These tires suck and are a hazard. I do like the way they handle, but they are not worth getting stranded. Take my advise! Cheers!

    Really strange pressure numbers... and STR it's not knobby tire, I suppose its "knobbylike"
    I use 2,2 and 2,4 on front rear, and its perfect.
    On KTM1290 SAR rear wont last more than 8000km, with "pedal to the metal". But its wonderfull... noisy but wonderfull

    I am also using the Scorpion STR on my 1260 Enduro (tyre pressure 2.1 front and 2.2 rear), it lasted almost 14,000 kms. I am thinking of moving over to Metzeler Tourance soon and see how it's perform. I also keep a set of TKC80 for off-road trip but that would only last for about 5,000 kms. It's pure knobbly but they are using soft building compound to make it very sticky on-road, great for off-road but won't last long when riding on-road.

    • @spokewanderer
      @spokewanderer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      WOW 14000 km is massive!!!!
      Mine are almost down at 8000 km! OK, front can do more is half down I would say! Well, I am mounting the Trialmax Mission tyres by mid March! TkC 80s are great! But harder off road is not really for the 950!
      Thanks for commenting!!!! Safe rides!!!!!

    I find the STR's to be better than the Trail II's in every way. Maybe they wear faster, but they have better traction on and offroad and my biggest complaint about the Trail II's was the extremely slow turn in behavior. I actually thought this was due to suspension geometry, so I was amazed how well I could slam it into corners after fitting the STR's. I can lean it all the way to the edge and push hard through corners with no issues... Where did you get the recommended tire pressures for these tires mounted on a 950? I came up with my pressures based on pressure rise test from cold to hot and I came up with 36-37 psi rear and 32 front. I don't think I would be able to push the tire as hard as I do with pressures as low as you are running. I wonder if this is why your set wore so fast?

      Hi Erik!
      Thanks for your comment!
      I absolutely agree on what you wrote! The STRs are amazing tires in regards of handling, grip and the possibility of light off roading.
      The tire pressure that I mentioned is provided by Ducati itself!
      There is this tire pressure sticker on the left side swing arm, where pressure for street & knobbies is recommended.

      @@spokewanderer Ahhh. Be careful about using manufacture recommendation for tire pressures when your not using the factory issued tires. They can vary quite a bit. Not to the point of unsafe conditions, but with a little experimenting, you can find optimal pressures using the cold vs hot pressure rise test

    damn, i have scorpion trail II on my 1290 now (4th set i think) and i almost never get more than 8000-9000kms. the rear wears a lot in the middle, and the front wears a lot on the sides. i dont know how you got 17000kms from yours lol.
    i was thinking about STRs, but based on your wear after 7000kms, i dont think they would last more than 5000kms on me...
    guess i will stay with trail II

    Those are very low pressures to run on anything but off-road Nicolai. Yes, you will get great traction on loose surfaces with 23 PSI, but that pressure will allow them to wear MUCH quicker than running higher pressures on the asphalt. Tyre wear relates to temperature, which is a function of the distortion of the tyre in use, and softer pressures allow more distortion of the tyre, and generate more heat, and therefore wear.
    Can I suggest you try your next tyres at Front 33 and Rear 36 PSI on the asphalt, and only the lower pressures off road? One of the small compressors now available make this easy when the road goes back to asphalt, after the off-road section.
    I run about 28 PSI front and 30 rear for off road, and reinflate to 30 front and 33 rear for asphalt. For long runs on asphalt I run 32 front and 35 rear, to prevent excessive tyre wear. These are close to the recommended pressures for my bike (new Honda Transalp - F 33 and R 36 recommended) but I have developed my preferred pressures on my old '95 Cagiva Elefant 750, and use similar pressures on the Honda, in spite of it being quite a bit heavier than the Elefant. (Yes, I know that sounds a bit wrong - heavier than an elephant)?
    If you found the low tyre pressures more comfortable, perhaps you need to soften your suspension for your use. Less spring preload, or (preferably) softer springs, rather than such low pressures. You will probably achieve far greater mileage if you alter your pressures as I have suggested. I say this after 61 years of riding, on all surfaces, and almost 50 years of Ducati devotion. Nice bike, by the way...

    Hi Nicola, thanks for the review. Did you noticed tire vibration or a high(er) nosie at autobahn speeds?

    • @spokewanderer
      @spokewanderer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Vibrations at higher speed are OK - little you might feel after the tyres has 3000km run.
      Also from this point onwards they start 'singing'!
      Most of the time I ride country roads anyway. And yes also some tyre noise at lower speed 70 km/h plus.
      Still like the tyres very much!

    Exceptional videeo "spoke wanderer".The presentation was down to earth & new themes,such as graph which showed the str's best points. I have them on my vstrom650 with about 5k.I'm a careful rider so not much wear. Some say that they can go sideways but this is not what I have found.The scorpion digs in to soft off road surfaces well. What do you think of the Dunlop tractionator. Thanks for great video.
