Eric O. continues to blaze the trail of new achievement with this film, creating early Oscar buzz surrounding his haunting and disturbingly sensuous brakleen segment. Viewers worldwide have reacted with rapt and mesmerized attention. This is a real triumph in modern filmdom. BRAVO - Rating: 5 Stars * * * * *
I don't know what possessed you to do a slow motion segment with music as the brake clean flowed over the axle hub but I have to admit, you got me to laugh. Excellent work as usual Eric.
Been taking chances for 38 years. Got me 3 kids but never a collapsed brake hose. Lol. Most entertaining video I have watched in a while. Keep up the good work!
Ya know, I'm a DIYer back yard mechanic wannabe type guy so I appreciate all I learn from Mr O's vids. Even if I wasn't though, I'd still watch 'em just for their pure entertainment value. Its better than watching TV!
Outstanding replacement. I'll be doing this job + today on my Daughters 2015 Prius. I'll be replacing all 4 rotors and front and back break pads along with the right rear caliper. Wish me luck!!
Oh holy crap man. Just finished another 12 hour day and commuted an hour to home. Checked TH-cam for updates and see this video! Really great to relax with your humor, excellent mechanic-ing and a cameo of your awesome family!
At 9:45 Eric asks, "Kind of monotonous, isn't it?" No absolutely not. I love seeing you work. You are clearly doing the best job possible, and that is an endless joy to watch. In addition, I love seeing all the ways engineers can design the same components to do the same job. In this case the shock goes into a bracket welded to the outside of the lower spring cup. It is so much fun to see this.
Eric I love your videos. Your commentary is worlds better than all the others. And at 6:35 you get brilliant. Slo-mo, great music, and your trademark break cleaner. Wonderful.
Wow, Dr O! Slow mo brake clean!!!! Absolutely love that!! With music in background! Great video! Man, you got serious style! It's gets so better with fancy editing. Many, many thumbs up from me 😃 👍👍👍👍👍
I once watched another video of a guy that did an LS swap to his Monte Carlo. Guy sounded like a southern All American bad ass. He flips on the ignition and BRAZILIAN music starts playing. Oh the things you never expect
Maybe he's a six million dollar man as he occasionally goes into the superfast bionic mode, for example cleaning the rust away from the hub and brake cleaner making that sound effect every time :D
So, I have seen several videos where the wheel has come off while the car is moving, and always a day or two after some other shop replaced the tire. Those shop state that you must return to let them RE-tighten the lug nuts. This is because those shops do not clean the rust off the disks, which means the wheel is not solidly bolted down to the disk. As the car moves the wheel-rotor mating surface scours off the rust, and this loosens the wheel. In every video Eric cleans off this rust at every surface. When Eric is done, that wheel in on to stay. This is the joy of watching Eric work.
Nice to see someone working on a car with salt damage! Living in Rochester, I have to roll my eyes when someone posts a video featuring a car that has lived its life in the Sunbelt. Well, time to replace pads & rotors on my 2020 Prius Prime! I'll wave next time I drive past on 390. Thanks, Eric.
Why was I transported to the dentist when you used that pick on the rear hub (shudder), then laughter when I saw the slo-mo brake clean spray action. Great job on the car and the video. NB here (UK) so many cars now don't have a handbrake or emergency brake instead they have electrically operated ones which engage and disengage automatically so their use is definitely on the increase.
In wet, freezing weather the brakes can freeze in the set position if applied when warm. A lot of people in snow country have learned not to use the parking brake, at east in winter.
I like that you know just how seriously to take yourself in your videos. Once someone reaches the mechanical level you're at, you can have some fun with it.
Nice work. I did a pad slap on my brothers car the other day. He refused to replace the worn out rotors and bought the cheapest pads they sold. I spent about 10 careless minutes on the job.
I didn't even bother driving it. He said it was great. Not even squealing or squeaking. The rotors were not previously pulsating but had large groves on them. One of the inner pads was completely worn down almost metal on metal due to a sticky caliper (which I did replace).
The car will be fine as long as the only issue is the rotors needed to be turned. It will actually cause the brakes to grab better, but at the cost of those new brake pads. They won't last as long as they could have if the rotors were replaced/turned also.
If you have a stuck caliper piston, that caliper needs to be rebuilt. You may free it up but its only going to last so long. At least a new piston and seal. On some brakes, I am careful about which calipers I buy. I am not going to completely trust the phenolic pistons (plastic) long long term. Brakes are too important to keep working at 100%. Replace your brake fluid if you haven't already done so!
@@snoopdogie187 I haven't turned rotors in 30 years or more. Rotors seem much more susceptible to judder after being turned, especially if they had it to start with. If the rotors are not looking and behaving well I buy new ones. Much better results.
The 6 Million Dollar man was one of my favorite TV shows in my yout. Now I see how you beat the book so easily. I need one of those warnings for a ball cap. "Warning: Do not crossthread or overtighten". Never knew it could be fun watching a brake job. Great work Eric O.
videos like this make me so glad I don't live in a place that gets snow all winter long. I don't have to deal with any of that rusty crap on my cars. Just a little surface rust here and there. I've owned my Integra 18 years and can only recall maybe 2 bolts that I've ever broken on the car - an exhaust manifold stud, and one of the OEM shock tower brace studs.
Don't tell me Scotty Killmore finally woke up and sent his Yota Prius to a Real mechanic , while he made another rant and rave vid with non laughable commentary , lmao . This people is a real technician at work , very educational and full of info , along with great work and family ethics . Keep em coming sir , great job again
*raises hand* parking brake user here also, for both manual and automatic cars. Knowing how the park function works on auto gearboxes with the little pin hold the weight of the car, using the parking brake seems like the obvious thing to do. My wife never uses it, but I do.
Romantic music and slo-mo for the brake clean! Makes me want to snuggle up to my can! You should have gone into the movie making business, Mr. O! Or maybe advertising...
i did add a couple of flanged headed bolts and nuts with some rubber washers to my tool box a couple years ago just to plug off my banjos. seals them so they dont drip but more importantly keeps the dirt out.
Obviously Avoca is not yet suffering the effects of over-population. In Central London you pay £11.50 ($16.50) just to enter the zone. Poor people who drive older cars have to pay an extra £10 on top so total of £21.50 ($30) per day. It's enforced by ANPR cameras. You would also stand a good chance of getting fined for various rule infringements like 20mph speed limits, yellow box junctions, bus and cycle lanes, parking restrictions and ignoring traffic signs which can be too numerous for the human brain to decipher while looking out for all the other road markings. You're in the right place Eric.
My take on clamping the hoses (I've never done it - I wrap the fitting and let it ooze) is that if the hose gives trouble after being clamped the hoses should be replaced all around.
The SLOW MO brake clean will surely be a classic! The added music (Italian maybe???) was a nice touch but the short to long to short to long spray stream was the best.
parking brake remember when it was called your emergency brake with the actuation handle under the dashboard. and the starter pedal was on the floor next to the GAS PEDAL👍
The mechanical parking brake saved my bacon while going down a steep hill and the brake line gave way. I was able to use it to drive to a local shop. What would've happened if I had the electronic parking brake?
+mikey mike On a few old cars there were two foot-operated switches on the floor: one for the high beams, and the second to engage the engine starter. The first time I ever saw this I was really confused, the car was manual transmission: one foot on the brake, one foot on the clutch, one foot on the gas for a cold start and another foot for the floor mounted starter switch. Humans must have been different back in the 1950s. Another setup found on some old cars had the starter switch beneath the clutch pedal, push the clutch to the floor and the starter would engage, even when you were driving. Perfect car to teach someone to drive standard.
Eric, I love the channel dude. I work on cars in a shop here in Arkansas and it amazes me to see how bad the salt is on those cars up there. I mean I dont even see this kind of rust on 50 and 60 year old vehicles that even come into the shop
Was working on my moms 2010 prius brakes yesterday and I found the driver side brake was a mess. The outer pad was missing and the metal wire hinge thing was hanging onto the other pad and was scraping the heck out of the rotor. When I removed the other pad it fell into 2 pieces. The metal back and the contact pad split into 2. Now I need to order a new rotor for the rear.
Used to pinch the hoses.... Until i tried sticking a tire valve on the banjo hole!!! ;).... I still pinch hoses!!!! Feels good!!! great video as always Mr. O!!!
One thing to keep in mind, though your process is essentially the same between different vehicles, many viewers only search for their vehicles... So to them, it's essentially specific, and never monotonous....
@burningfeet 57 The third generation Prius (shown in this video) has almost exactly the same 0-60 time as the US version of the Delorean DMC-12: a bit over ten seconds. My wife and I have bought nothing but Prius since 2002. My 2002 needed its first repair (besides a couple 12V batteries, a windshield, tires and wiper blades) at 195K miles when the inverter coolant pump died - a problem in the first and second generations, including a recall in the second gen. I gave my 2002 Prius to my son last year because I retired and didn't need it. He did the brakes for the first time at more than 200K miles; the front brakes were about 2/3 worn. The rear brakes were like new. My wife traded up to a 2010 five years ago and would still have it had it not turned into a magnet two years ago. Within barely six months it was sideswiped by a pickup truck beside her who flinched from a car entering the road, then a deer ran full speed into the driver's door, then a young woman had a seizure in a parking lot and fatally damaged it. She loves her 2014 with all the goodies, though. We have never had a car even a tenth as reliable as the Prius cars we have had.
Good clip. I like the brake cleaner clip, made me laugh out loud. I hope your daughter feels better soon. I would like to see a Prius battery replacement in the future. 👍
Great Vid! I'll bet those brakes hardly ever get used with the regen on. Hear about the 6k brake job on a tesla? He used regen ALWAYS and the calipers and rotors were one solid rust spot! Never touched the brakes in 22k!! Hope lil T feels better!
In the first gen Prius the regen cut out below 12 mph. I don't know about the more recent models, but I agree the rotor looked like it hadn't been touched by the pads for a winter or more. (Regeneration is not controllable in the Prius.)
I used your link and bought me one of those hub cleaner tools. Love it, thanks for the link. Also, can't avoid hearing your "dramatic intro" in my mind each time I pick up a can of brake cleaner...Lol! Find your videos very informative while also entertaining. Keep em coming, stay awesome!
Important: When changing out brake pads and rotor only, it is totally unnecessary to remove the parking brake cable from the brake caliper. Just follow the brake cable forward ( a foot or so) and you will find a number 10 metric bolt that you will need to remove. This fastens the brake cable to the car body. Once this is removed you will have plenty of room to move the caliper out of the way avoiding unnecessary work. I know this because I have performed this job on my Toyota Prius a number of times.
I was surprised that rotor came off as it did. I have a vacuum bleeder that I have had good success with I miss having a second body in the shop. It all seems to work out in the end. Great video.

I dig the slow-mo brake parts cleaner shot with the dramatic music. Keep up the video editing chops!

Excellent!
You killed me with that little slow motion/bucolic italian music combo spraying on the brake cleaner!
That slow-mo brake cleaner spray and music put this video over the top for sure!
Now I know why you buy the advance brake cleaner over crc. Excellent video
love the BRAKE SERANADE VERY RELAXING. is the orchestra in the office with Mrs. O
The brake clean with the music was epic. That made the whole video.

Epic scene: the good stuff in slow motion with that soundtrack behind, it should be included in TH-cam's 2018 rewind!
The closed end of a 14mm wrench fits great over the tabs on the parking brake cable to release it. Not as fun as the angle grinder though!

I pinch brake hoses too never had a problem. But I like to use long rubber valve stems through the banjo hole too, no pinch your less mess
valve stems as plugs good one, I started using vacuum caps rolled through the holes, but the stems sound much faster!

Love the scraping of the booger hook pipped into my ears from headphones. Guess that's what I get for having youtube going in the background at work.
Love brake jobs. Great job, man!

something so satisfying about brake cleaner. It really is a good feeling.

Thanks for the video, always appreciate the brakes. Like your attention to detail.

You make me laugh at 6am 😂. Good therapy. Thank you Mr O 😊
Great job there Eric O !
