    I just got this installed on a new Hightower 2. Install was simple and shifting seems very smooth. Note that shimano’s dealer manual specs the cassette lock ring between 30-50 Nm. Much more than 10.

    • @cmhartle
      @cmhartle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Another note is that the dealer manual states 5-6 links left on the chain for a full suspension bike. These are available at si.shimano.com.

      Haha good catch. I could remember the exact number. I went hand right and then a turn with a wrench so scientifically 30-50nm

    I've had nothing but problems with the new shimano 12spd. 2 failed xt freehub mechanisms that started creaking, then locked on and turned into fixed gear hubs. That was terrifying! Then the mail pivot of my slx rear mech corroded and the pulley cage no longer moved. Also, 3 xt 12spd shifters fail on me. On all three, one on the small springs that drives the shifts to easier gear/bigger cog breaks, then they can only shift to harder gears. Shimano has warrantied every I have listed, no questions asked. I do ride way more than most(endurance mtb racing is my thing) but this has been shocking to me, have had 11spd xt everything for years with zero issues. Think in the next year or two we'll start seeing massive recalls on all the 12spd parts as the average riders catch up with the mileage I put on my stuff.

    • @IslandBikeLife
      @IslandBikeLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that is really interesting to hear. I haven't heard similar feedback from other people or my bike shop but it seems like a bit of a coincidence that you had so many failures yourself to not be a bigger issue. Time will tell, thanks for watching.

    Thanks for the video. I am seeing the 6 piece XT 8100 12-speed kit on EBay for only $520 shipped. Comes with cranks, RD, shifter, chain, cassette, and BB. We even have the option for crank length and chain ring size. THIS IS MUCH CHEAPER THAN SRAM X01. Since shifting and quality are tops, this drivetrain will most likely be on my next bike.

    I was hoping you’d go through the actual B gap setting, and any other small nuances of the new group set, as I am coming off years of SRAM and was curious the difference. I’ll figure it out in the garage tonight, but was hoping for some tips. I realize some of the stuff is super easy, like screw the derailleur onto the hanger, but why not highlight the nuances of the new group set beyond the basic stuff.

    • @IslandBikeLife
      @IslandBikeLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I talked about it, there isn’t really much to it. Adjust the B Gap to match the largest cog with the etching on the back of the derailleur whe the bike is compressed fully. Other than that it is the same as every other mechanical derailleur out there. Good luck!

    Question - the first shift from the 10t cog to the 12t cog, is it extremely light feeling? On my setup it feels as if half the shift is just taking up cable slack.

    Hi, thanks for the video, really informational. My XT 8100 groupset arrived today and on the derailleur there is a blob of green grease - you have it in the video as well at 4:40. Do you suggest leaving it in place to attract dirt or remove (most of) it? Thanks in advance!

    • @IslandBikeLife

      I left it on there. After the first wash it will clean out any excess or small amount of dirt it might attract.

    Great video! I’m waiting on a microspline freehub body to come in so I can get XT on my bike. I’ve noticed on multiple SRAM drivetrains I’ve had that they’re very sensitive to fine tuning and seemingly in need of adjustment every few rides. How is the XT in terms of “set it and forget it,” if you will?

    • @IslandBikeLife
      @IslandBikeLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say it is that way, though I haven’t had that same experience as you with SRAM which I do not have to adjust regularly either. They are pretty equal.

    @dansburns 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video. I notice in the instructions for the derailleur installation they say for the chain length: "For full suspension bikes, check the length without any load applied to the suspension." So this means I should not compress my bike's suspension, correct? I've always done that in the past with SRAM 1x. So, I don't need to do that with Shimano 1x12?

    Very helpful video! Do you have any idea if the derailleur should be installed on a direct mount hanger or a standard hanger?

    • @IslandBikeLife
      @IslandBikeLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure I understand your question. Every bike I have ever had utilized a specific hanger which was not integrated to the frame. So whatever hanger your bike has should be fine.

    • @George1161
      @George1161 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IslandBikeLife Years ago, Shimano started making direct mount derailleurs which had to either be mounted on a direct mount hanger (the derailleur screw hole sits farther behind the axle than on standard hangers) or be mounted to a standard hanger with an additional b-link. I have a direct mount hanger on my bike and recently read these derailleurs are not compatible with direct mount hangers.

    • @pavel_zak
      @pavel_zak 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@George1161 I haven't installed mine yet but a quick look suggests that with 8100 the b-link is integrated - the shape of bare 8100 corresponds to 8000 with b-link. So if you don't use a b-link with 8000 XT, I would say that 8100 won't fit.

    • @IslandBikeLife

      Depending on how much you ride it might not. Measuring and replacing your chain often to prevent wear to the cassette will save you lots of money in the long run. The shifter and derailleur will last for years so long as you don’t crash and damage them. Inam not sure what your issue is, drive train parts are considered wear items. They don’t last forever but if you treat your bike properly, clean it and maintain it they will last. Calm yourself down a little bit.
