    Phil, watching all your advice, how to etc, thank you, fantastic. I'm fumbling my way around opal & can't thank you enough for your attention to detail & what the unlearned might need to know. With your Matrix video & seeing a lot of the white to clear opal; we watched your doublet video and cant figure out why you wouldn't do a doublet with some of this lighter material? Would they turn out alright as doublets? Would the ironstone be better left as dark brown ironstone with a clear epoxy? Chris & Paul BB

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      G’day mate, with the doublet backing, blacker the better for contrast, some really dark ironstone would be ok with clear epoxy, but all imperfections will be seen. I’m not sure what lighter material you’re referring to, it’s been a good minute since I’d did these videos, but if there’s decent colour that can’t cut a solid, or would just be better as a doublet, then it’s up to the cutter to decide what’s worth their time, or, for hobbyists it’s dealers choice. 🤪👍

    I just checked an auction site and I saw a bit of Andamooka matrix that was 4 carats for $2800 U.S. that's a fair bit more than the price of an ounce of Gold.

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @coryboatz4434
    @coryboatz4434 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The quartz matrix is interesting, looks a lot tougher than the sandstone overall even though it doesn't take the treatment as well

    Which is your favourite type of Opal to cut/polish?
    My favourite to see is the white/colourful crystal Opal I think..
    but tbh I love it all 😄

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Crystal, (translucent/transparent), hands down, as I think it’s the purist form of opal, and something that clear being able to produce the rich, bright/intense coloration, on the right angles removing any hint of translucency by a blinding, full coloured display of the spectrum, with colour play that won’t let up. I can dream 🤪👍

    Phil what type of UV light should I get for my opal in the United States,

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The one I was using was Angel’s, I intend to buy one. That brand is eagtac or eagletac, I’m not saying “should get” this one, or promoting the store, but here’s a link to get you started www.eliteoutdoorgear.com.au/product/eagletac-mx25l3-rechargeable-compact-6x365nm-ultraviolet-led-torch/ I also found this to explain UV and fluorescence www.waveformlighting.com/tech/what-is-the-difference-between-365-nm-and-395-nm-uv-led-lights 🤪👍

    It seems like matrix opal would be extremely difficult to spot in the field. Must take quite a bit of experience to pluck em.

    • @theopalmills
      @theopalmills  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once you find the opal bearing level, meaning if there’s opal it’ll be in a certain layer, and you filter through it carefully, but yes the experienced miners know what to keep an eye out for. 🤪👍
