@@scrunchymacscruff1244 sorry, when I saw your post I assumed the 404HD was some type of hard drive. My initial response was based on swapping out the hard drive for an SSD style hard drive. However in your case, I am fairly comfortable with audio interfaces and have ran multiple brands and currently settled on the MOTU 2. The only interface that gave me problems was an older Alesis 8 channel FireWire. And that was due to updating the apple OS software, it would no longer function. Something about the software certificate no longer being valid. My best advice, is if you knew someone with another interface that you could plug in and see if the Mac recognized it. Or go to a music store, and do the old buy and return. But maybe check to see if your Mac is running the current operating system. Could be as simple as updating but could also be due to a recent update. Aren’t computers fun lol. Anyway, hope that helps in some small way. Curious to know if you get it running or atleast get a different brand running. Cheers.

A couple of yrs ago, did this with my mid 2010 MBP 13", maxed out RAM at 8GB, replaced HD with 250GB SSD, runs much faster. Did same for daughter's older Windows ASUS laptop. So many replacement parts available, you can even replace the screen, keyboards, and motherboard if you want to keep the MBP alive and running. The only main difference to me is the lower res screen on the MBP compared to newer laptops, and lack of touchscreen. Otherwise, it's still a great machine good for many more years.

    • @Billy123bobzzz

It boils down to which SSD you installed. Older SSDs just were just not as fast as current SSDs but they still were faster than all but the most exotic hard drives. There are a variety of reasons, most of which the average consumer has no visibility into but if the interface is not at least a SATA 3, then you can assume that it just will not be as fast as today's SSD because the SATA 1 and SATA 2 interfaces just are not very fast.
Its all very relative, if your SSD does not measure very well in benchmarks tests it still might work perfectly well for everyday tasks. The next most important thing to upgrade is to the latest version of macOS, because the newer versions have been optimized to give such better performance when using an SSD (due to SSDs having very different performance characteristics than traditional hard disk drives). I would not worry about it unless you are copying massive amounts of very larges files every single day. For daily tasks your SSD might work just fine.

To my knowledge even the original 2008 MacBook Air has an embedded/soldered RAM. Only the SSD can be replaced. Kinda a bummer! Only way to replace the RAM is to desolder the chips and upgrade it. I saw on a Chinese you tube video where a lady does logic level repair and changes the chip.

My 15” 2011 MBP has 16GB Ram, a 512GB SSD and still runs slow. I’ve wiped the hard drive and re-installed the OS, but no dice. I think this is related to the shitty GPU that they had to switch out once, when it failed. I bought a new laptop (Surface), but I still want my Mac to be faster, so I can use it when I want.

I upgraded my mid 2009 macbook pro up to 8gb ram and installed a 1 TB ssd drive in it back in early 2017. I'm running El Capitan on it and it runs like a dream. It runs likes its brand new. It still looks new. Best money I ever spent on a computer. I have had windows based computers that hardly have made it beyond a year before they were irrelevant. It's been far from the case with this laptop. When I buy a new laptop it will definitely be another macbook pro.

you may be able to replace the ssd by also buying an adapter (you’ll have to look up the connector in your machine) and use it with an msata or m.2 ssd. i did it with my late 2012 retina but i’m unsure whether or not there are adapters available for mid 2013s? the ram is soldered in though so that’s not removable at all

My 2010 MacBook unibody just got upgraded to 16gb ram and 250gb ssd and it’s just as fast as the new macs except for screen quality but it only cost a total of $400 and it gets the job done and I can even play high end games on it even though it’s not recommended lol.

I recommend 16 gb ram and 250gb crucial ssd echo you can get for a little less then $100 and the ram is like $150-$170
