"Rattan for life"

  • Traditional rattan furniture has been produced in Indonesia for generations but in the last few years its production and sales have decreased as rattan has become less fashionable and younger generations are loosing interest in this sector. Under the motto "Rattan for Life", the SWITCH-Asia project "Prospect Indonesia" supports this industry by training farmers, designers and producers, improving the quality and design of rattan products and promoting rattan-products' eco-friendly characteristics. A non-timber material, rattan grows by climbing the trees in the rainforest, thus helping to preserve forests and their local wildlife such as orangutans. Additionally, it contributes to a cleaner air by offsetting CO2 emissions.

Filipinos are great workers of rattan furnitures way back 70s and 80s in fact at present time, we used to cater orders from famous Hollywood stars .. I could still recall when Malaysia hired Filipino workers including my father to work and teach the Malaysians how to create furnitures out of rattan vines.when they learned the art, all the Filipino workers were fired out and were sent back to the Philippines.

I hope the people working hard in the rattan industry are being paid a fair wage. Always find the companies with strongly established FAIR TRADE principles. Thank you for the video. _/\_

This was a very informative video. I have always loved rattan furniture and weaving. I see that this weaving is labor intensive and more involved that I thought. Nothing as beautiful as this furniture will go out of fashion. It has always appeared warm and inviting when ever I sit on my porch. Green is the way to go! thanks again.

Of course, Natural Rattan will be always like natural ivory. PVC tries to be something that never ever will be as pure natural.

Have you ever seen Tarzan movies, where he jumps from one tree to other? That plant is the african rattan: In this case, rattan most popular in the World is the indonesian one, mainly collected in Kalimantan and Sulawesi jungles.
