Hi guys, you have presented our former combat suit very nice, all the numerous pockets, how big and how deep they are. But you have no idea what all these pockets were used for. Almost every pocket had their prescribed function: Magazine pockets for the rifle (pockets on the chest,) the first aid package (pocket on the left arm,) the water bottle (on the right side.) The large pockets at the back around the waist were intended for the dishes (the "Gamelle," which is a special dish for cooking and eating.) The deep and narrow pockets on the backpack were for the rifle grenades. In the large middle pocket of the backpack the rain cover was, ax or folding spade was strapped onto the backpack. The pockets on the trousers were for the hand grenades. Until the beginning of the 1990s in the swiss army were used so-called stalk hand grenades, which fit very well into these pockets. And please, do not use the hook on the chest not for the bottle. Also not for the pacifier. But for the helmet. This type of combat suit was used until 1993 and was then replaced by the current one.
Regards from an old Swiss soldier (time of duty 1978 - 2000)

Thank you so much for the wonderful information!
What type of rifle was usually issued with this uniform?

TheRusty58 inside of the jacket is a large compartment on the back , was this for a blanket or something? As an old Cold War era soldier I really like the well thought out design the Swiss had with this system. For its day, and even now , I feel like it’s a better load carrying system than some of the other stuff out there. For sure better than what the US used in the 80’s . As someone who used it in the field it would be interesting to know some of the things you liked and didn’t like about the system. I take the top and backpack out into the woods hunting and camping and it really performs well for me. I really like that the Swiss thought to leave the right shoulder area clear for shouldering the rifle. That was the biggest down fall of US systems. The straps were always in the way .

Boris Markov At that time they were using the STGw 57 ..later the 90. I think they switched to the 90 around 1990 for the front line guys. The 2nd and 3rd line militia guys were probably still on the 57. An actual Swiss guy would know the exact time they switched over. Those mag pockets up front will hold lots of different mags. From AR to 308 . Only long AK mags don’t fit well, but the 20 round tankers work well.. You can get a ton of SKS strippers in them.

You are absolutely right. Trial elite troops where issued in 1990, I got my Stgw90 in 1991 (infantry basic training schools) and and in 1993 most of the infantry battalions switched from stgw57 to the Stgw90 during their yearly militia "training duty". So it happened that I weard this old parka with the new Stgw90 in 1991/1992 and we were issued by the new TAZ90 Equipment in 1993. It was a big effort to have a "uniformity" between the different soldiers with their different equipment, but we handeld it for a good percentage until 1995. I remember that some air defense troops had the Stgw57 also in 1999 :D Not really a problem, except the different ammo (7.5 x 55mm Swiss vs. 5.56x45mm) ... and the weight of the Stw57 !

Moment of nostalgia for me... I was in recruit school in summer 1992 (RS 237) and had this uniform on (almost) every day for 17 weeks. By that time, all infantry schools were updated to both Taz 90, and fass 90 (the new gun), but we in the artillery were behind. Those were the very last years of this uniform. Two years later all schools were updatet to Taz 90, and around 1998 all of the army went to the Taz 90.

I am Swiss and wore this combat suit between 1976 and 1995. The way you describe it is a bit confusing. All those many pockets have a very special use. The canteen, pellicle, etc. are always put in the same predetermined pocket, which is what it is intended for. So not as shown there, e.g. with the water bottle, which doesn't belong there.

the legs are rubberized water proof. it is a very handy set if you just have the complete top your good to go for most things. you can easily hold a full edc bag worth and ammo.

No this is the Taz 57, the Taz 83 has the same pattern (alpenflage) but doesn't have alle the big pockets. The Taz 83 is more like the Taz 90.

      The TAZ57 M70 absolutely ROCKS!!!
IIRC thats the one w an inner pocket for a gun-cleaning kit...
My only gripe is the sleeves seem short for the chest size requiring me to need a near-impossible to find XL rather than L (unlike the shirt style M83 jacket where L/size 52 is PERFECT fit everywhere)~

Ok so i bought this and the pants suspenders seem like they were tied and cut. I can't untie the knot and even if i could theres no way i would even be able to go over my shoulders. Anyone else have this done to thier pants?

    • @blemishednicely8402
      @blemishednicely8402 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Some soldiers do that once they fitted them so with weight/movement etc they always stay where they want them...similar to how some tape/tie vests & loose straps or other bits of kit despite it looking not great (they are more concerned with form/function & not losing things/having them secure & handy)
That is unfortunate but would be why~

  • @bittmanbobby

Technically that water bottle is a replica of the ones used by the German army in World War II, the Czechs copied everything they could (MG42, equipment loading system, backpack, etc.)
