As we enter winter here in the Canadian Rockies, I'm preparing for months of wonderful winter photography. This video was packed full on information I needed and didn't know I needed! Really excited to carry these lessons into the field with me. Definitely going to refer to this video throughout the winter!

Thanks a lot Nigel. This is an awesome explanation. I do remember a few years ago being criticised that my white balance was off as snow should have been brilliant white. That was a pre-sunrise shoot very similar to the one you showed today. Sometimes people are missing this point. Snow will be as white as the light reflected by it.

couple of LR classic tool tips... 1) you can use the crop tool to bound an area and see what the histogram looks like for just that patch. that can come in handy trying to isolate what's going on in the color of any solid white/black area - it'll point out the casts... then re-crop how you want your full image to be of course... 2) you can measure just the lightness value on a scale of 0-100 by right clicking on the histogram and flip it to show the L*a*b outputs... L is your brightness... and you can flip it back to RGB if you want. That will help you determine compared to paper white or full black where some areas will fall in the output image...(not exactly zone system but on that sort of thinking...)

Interesting stuff Nige. Over the years, we’ve been so often brainwashed into believing we have to use exposure comp by 1-2 stops to make or force the snow to be white! This was a great insight into why this is not always the case.

Thank you for your great work and your dedication to helping spread your knowledge and craft to others. One of the most uplifting things of the 21st century has been our access to people you would otherwise never get to see if not for youtube. Before, you might spot a book in a bookshop but in youtube you have the author getting out of his car with sleepy eyes and showing you how he does it in the bitter cold. What it gives us is the chance to meet our particular teacher and in my case it is is Nigel.

very nice video, Nigel, to watch on a Sunday morning. We don’t have as much snow as we used to have in the Berlin area, hence this is a nostalgic experience... And then, I happen to be more into still photography but here watching Nigel moving through the picture, talking about clothing gear, obviously still feeling the cold, it feels like still photography is enhanced by such a video. Also the choice of music fits in very nicely. You made my Sunday morning, Nigel!

Great video Nigel. We have not had snow but we did have a beautiful hoar frost at the weekend that was about an inch think and had a very similar effect to snow. It's encouraging to see I was exposing correctly with my live histogram and selecting the white balance that I wanted for the images. However, I have picked up some useful points for post processing which I can now apply to them. Many thanks, really useful content you produce. W.

I live in a very cold part of Canada, and I've often just hibernated with my photography until the spring.. my past experiences with photographing snow have been frustrating, and often i end up converting the image to a black and white to simplify the problems with snow. We're having a bit of a minor "heat wave" with temps around -11 C for the next few days, so this has inspired me to get out and do some photography... The best thing about winter photography, is you don't have to get up at some unGodly hour to photograph sunrise...

Wonderful conditions. You're so lucky! In Denmark, we have had 1 hour of sunshine so far in the month of December and it's already December 13th. Most of the time it's completely overcast with low hanging clouds, so not enough light (especially not for my medium - film) - and of course no snow at all.
But, good advice, and great images.

Great images, Nigel. After thinking winter and snowy images were all whited-out, you demonstrated quite the opposite. If you capture the color you have, white snow actually becomes a beautiful reflector of that light, painting the whole landscape with blushes of color and hues. Amazing shots. Thank you.

Having lived in the UK in Canterbury for about 3years, I found snow to be a bit rarer in the South. I also lived in Aberdeenshire in Scotland, but I was disappointed I couldn't be there in the winter. I get some pics from friends there, but where you are is amazing. Nigel, you have such a good eye and sense of photography. I'm in the Midwest, in Michigan now, and you really would have a great time taking pictures here. Scotland and Northern England remind me so much of my home state here. I'm so inspired I'm going to take my new Nikon z5 out now and work on some stuff. I'll also have to drag myself out of bed early to see what's out there. Many blessings on you in the New Year and keep these videos going... they really inspire one to get out and photograph!

Excellent Video Nigel, also showing your enthusiasm and excitement you have for your photography and art. One point, can you try to give the text comments on the images a few extra seconds as those in this video seemed to disappear as I tried to read them, I seemed to miss the last few words, so had to rewind to read them. When doing these on my IT training videos, I usually check by reading them twice, which allows for slow readers. A very minor point in another excellent video. Have a great week and look forward to next weeks.

Really enjoyed this one Nigel, us Africans really sit in awe at the snow you guys have. We do get but generally, it is very high up on the mountains, mostly inaccessible, and often accompanied by severe weather. Also, farms here are not accessible, you can't open a gate and amble along on someone's land without a few rifle rounds hitting the ground at your feet while you seek urgent shelter! :D But good gosh, how was that light!!
