when they drove her coffin 70 miles to her families estate, people lined the roads and motorways all the way, throwing flowers onto the car. Everyone on the other side of the motorway stopped their cars and got out to bow their heads as the vehicle containing her coffin passed by. It was lovely to see. She is buried on an island in the middle of a lake in the grounds with 37 oak trees planted around it. One for every year of her life. No one knows the exact location of her grave except the family and a few VIP's All you could hear was people crying in the streets and sobbing. She wasnt perfect, but no one is. She was a perfect Princess. RIP Diana.

Even though I was born 4 years after she passed away. Diana's life and death touched me deeply. She became somehow my ideal of what a princess is supposed to be. Beautiful inside and out, and with a loving heart.
You could see that during her public and private life she wasn't just performing for the cameras. She genuinely cared about others. This was a fitting tribute song because Diana really was England's rose. A lovely rose, that was taken from us way to soon.
It's been 26 years now since her tragic death, and she is still missed more than ever.
Rest in peace, dear princess. We will always bring you in our hearts. ❤🌹

I was gutted during this day. I watched every minute of her funeral. And the only time I smiled was when Queen Elizbeth bowed her head when her coffin came passed her. And this song became iconic. I bought it the day after her funeral because the money went to Diana's charities.

Sir Elton John and Di were close friends. Imagine how heartbroken he were performing this in her honor not as princess or whatever the public wanted her to be. This is nothing but a hymn to friendship and that is why Elton falters not. These are his words to her.

i always tear up when i hear this song i was 17 years old didnt really know much about princess diana but seeing the amount of people in the streets of london the amounts of flowers given for her. and looking back this period of time after a period with hope of peace with the cold war endning but later in 95 isak rabin murdered derailing the peace process in israel , in 97 princess diana and mother teresa died and lastly 9/11 happened signaling a new era, i miss those years of hope.

It was SO beautiful, and so brave, from Elton, and what he sang that day, via his changed lyrics, was what we as a Nation wished and wanted to say to Lady Di 💔

Oh, thank you for that. Lovely reaction. For a lovely woman.
Diana shocked the world by hugging aids patients, by visiting the homeless on the streets at night and introducing her children to the realities of poverty, And, by walking through a land mind field to bring awareness and help to people wounded by land mines. She was quite extraordinary.
As was this tribute, by Bernie Taupin and Elton John.
Both versions of this song, the original dedicated and about Marylin Monroe, and this amazing performance, for Diana bring us to tears every time.

What a great loss, when princess Diana, died so tragically in a car crash in 1997. Such a beautiful person, full of life, one who brought so much joy and happiness to people. What a beautiful song in honor, of a beloved princess Diana. I know this song, was so heart retching for Sir Elton john, to perform in memory of his beloved friend Diana. All profits, were donated to the Elton john foundation. What a beautiful song. Brings tears to my eyes, every time I listen to this song. RIP - princess Diana. You are missed dearly.

At the end ,I blew out the candle on our table , others followed and we sat in darkness and silence for 5 mins or so .

It was nice of Elton to honor Princess Diana by re-writing this song he originally wrote for
Norma Jean (Marylin Monroe)'s death. "Candle In The Wind" (Goodbye Norma Jean)
was Elton's tribute to Marylin Monroe, he simply changed it to "Goodbye England's Rose"
as well much of das lyrics that were speaking about Marylin Monroe's life und sad death.
It ist difficult for me to judge Elton for doing this because Princess Diana's death ist
quite sacred to me, und I will never forgive them for what they have done, but I will
always cherish more das original "Candle in the Wind" song written for Norma Jean.

Oh stop with the old. We are all OLDER. You aren't the only one grown up by the 1980s; or 1997. We are just OLDER.

You've got the wrong name in the credits for the artist, Sir Elton John wrote the original way back, and Sir Elton John doesn't write the lyrics he writes the music Bernie Taupin has written the lyrics for at least 50 years, and they don't write anything together in the same room or even in the same country, this audience was around a couple of billion worldwide and a couple of million just in London

Yeah bit Elton is the one who is performing the song. He's singing, playing, and created the music. He's the public face.

He and Diana were friends. I don’t how he did it.

When Lady Diana of Wales died, I was not yet born! But watching the video where Sir Elton John sang this beautiful song in honor of His great friend, I can only feel pride and emotion! It is a pity that after 24 years the death of Lady Diana, we know that there was a reluctance on the part of the British Royal Family for Sir Elton John to pay homage with this song!

      I am glad they did.
And being they knighted him right afterward, I can only assume they did not regret the decision.

I'm sorry, but I'm a little bias against this version of the song. I always thought it was wrong how Elton took such a famous song that was written for Marilyn Monroe and used it for Princess Diana. I think Elton should have written a new song for Princess Diana. Here a link to the original song if anyone would like to hear it. th-cam.com/video/MYU3F8uUGiw/w-d-xo.html

What else could he do? There was public clamour for a new version of the much loved Candle in the Wind, not a new song entirely- you think he could have easily come up with one as good as that masterpiece? It was always logical that Bernie Taupin would simply change the words, a much simper task, and it was made clear the lyrics would be changed..

How long does it take to write a great song? Music+text? How much time did he have until her funeral? Elton and Princess Diana were very close friends(maybe even best friends), so he mourned her death and probably was not in best emotional condition to write music in such a short time. Great that Taupin could change the lyric but he was not a close friend to Diana.
