Princess Diana’s death was one of those events like JFK’s assassination and the Challenger explosion that you remember exactly where you were when you heard the news. Still so terribly sad even after all these years.

These are called flashbulb memories :) they happen after major historical moments that are culturally significant. You can ask most people where they were when they found out about 911 and they can describe it down to tiny details. Sometimes these things will help differentiate between generations- Millenials will remember 9/11 but Gen Z will often have been too young

@@gracie2298 I was only 3 years old when the Challenger tragedy happened and don't remember it. However, my family and I were one of the only few people in the visitor section that day (not to be confused with the VIP section where the clock and bleachers are placed) when it happened.
I grew up in Brevard county Fl and my grandfather and dad were both engineers for NASA. We obtained a visitors pass for the launch and almost didn't go due to the weather and my parents believing the launch would get scrubbed. However, we had family in town who have never seen a shuttle launch and took our chances. Based on a few family pics we took before the launch, you could see barely anyone was out on the visitor section that day. My mom told me when the Challenger exploded she started screaming while my relatives didn't know what was going on since they never have seen a shuttle launch. It gives me shivers even retelling the story.

There you are at 3 and all the adults are trying their best not to upset you. Very stressful day all around. No one wants to be part of history😣.
I was in Basic Training in the US Army, at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. There was an unscheduled formation called to inform us that Princess Diana had died and a moment of silence. It took a while to sink in, we were so sleep deprived. But I remember the tears and hearing weeping in the halls that night. That’s how much she meant the world over.
This still makes me cry thinking about her boys and what they went through I don’t blame Harry for protecting his wife

I was 30 years old when this news broke. I remember sitting at a bar in a hometown nightclub in Western New York. It was still a Saturnday night here in the States. The television was on behind the bar and I saw the news bulletein sometime between 10pm and 11pm. The announcer talked about the accident in Paris and Diana being seriously injured. i remember the volume of the TV was muted so people could hear the juke box in the bar. The closed captioning of the TV was on and i remember at some point the closed captioning changed from "Princess Diana has been seriously injured" to "Princess Diana has died". I remember letting out an audible gasp and the tears starting welling up. I was not the only one to have that reaction. Many people around me were in shock and quite emotional when they heard this dreadful news. I immediately began thinking of a lovely, mid summer morning in July 1981 when I purposely woke up at 4AM to watch a young, beautiful, radiant girl's fairytale royal wedding on television. I was just 14 yrs old then. I, like the rest of the world, fell in love with this lovely and compassionate young lady. I just couldn't believe she was gone. It felt like, still does, that the world lost a beautiful bright light of hope and fell a bit darker when she left it that terrible night in 1997. I feel very fortunate that I lived my youth and young adulthood in a time when she walked this earth.
It was shocking! I was 19 and lived in Chicago, I was out with my mom, and we came home around 10:30pm and I turned on the tv and saw the news. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, I remember screaming out to my mom, Princess Diana died!! It’s still shocking.
Awww. Diana was aristocratic all her life, but always found it natural and easy to connect with us common folk here in the UK. She was beautiful inside and out. She can never be replaced. However, we do love the BRF and adore the Cambridges and their beautiful offspring. Diana lives on through them x

My parents come from a little village in Saudi Arabia and even they tuned into Diana's funeral. I was only 1 when she passed away but my parents told me she was graceful and good for charity. She really was a princess of the people and it seems like she was literally adored everywhere she went. R.I.P
For me, she represents the single biggest and most significant untimely death in my existence. The way it happened, how young and beautiful she was, that she had two young kids, and the drama of her separation from an heir to the throne, it was all just so was shocking. People like Diana are not supposed to die early; she was known by more people around the globe than perhaps anybody else has ever been. It maybe selfish to say, but she had so much more to give this world. It was truly a sad tragedy and just a terrible terrible loss.
She predicted her death tho, so I wouldn't consider it untimely. She was hated for how much good she did.

My mom lived in El Salvador during this tragedy and even she remembers that day and how it was the talk for several weeks among those in her town. The fact that she made an impact even in such small countries amazes me, like I wonder what sort of person she was...

I was born a few days before Diana died and my mom told me how she had taken me to the hospital because I was sick and she saw the news in the waiting room and started crying so hard my uncle though something was wrong with me. Princess Diana was a forced to be reckoned with. The amount of love people had for her will never die.

Harry explained this entire situation with one single quote, "I will not be forced to participate in the game that killed my mother." That's all we need to know about why this is happening.
The irony is that many of Harry's harshest critics are the very same people who adored his mother. If you loved Diana, Harry's decision to leave should be easy to understand and "Say no more, were behind you" is the appropriate response.
You know what? I can't fully watch how she was killed, I don't want to imagine the ambulance that took abnormally long time to get her to the hospital. That's so true. When they made the decision to step away i was quite surprised at first, but it doesn't really affect me so it was fine, really. As i thought more about it and saw people being unsupportive and even cruel toward them, i kept thinking about his mother -what she went through and how i believe she would have supported them. I hope her sons can find peace and happiness with their families
I remember I was 8....and I was too young to understand. However, when my mom heard the news she started crying immediately. What a sad day!

I was 8 too! I remember my parents talking about it a lot and then for a very long time afterward, the news were about nothing but Diana. I remember being sick og hearing about it all the time and didn't really get why it was such a big deal. I did understand that this was a big deal to the adults. The only other time where the news have flared up like this was 9/11 and corona, though corona is in a league of its own.
I remember I was watching Saturday Night Live and Brian Williams broke in and said Diana had been in a crash and she was in "grave condition " and I was so shocked...a few minutes later he broke again to report she had died..I'll never forget that moment..being an American, we even loved her over here..still breaks my heart..and I think how her life would be today with 4 beautiful grandkids...such a sad tragedy

@@immanuelhall4577 She basically changed the worlds perception of AIDS when she hugged a patient who was dying from it, this was at a time when it was thought just shaking hands could pass the disease, so for her to do that made a lot of AIDS patients more accepted and if really helped with educating about the diseases

Those press travelling with Robin Cook the foreign secretary in the Philippines were told at 4am UK and Nicolas Witchell their correspondent rang the BBC. The fact that Robin Cook delayed his departure was another giveaway the protocol is that no member of the government should be in the air when a royal death is announced
They were just trying to prepare people for bad news whilst waiting for the official announcement. The news had been embargoed the Press Association just broke the embargo.

She is well known for being so compassionate, reaching out to people, and even breaking the stigma for mental health and HIV/AIDS. she was the first royal to hug and shake hands of those patients suffering. Even the Philippines has mourned for her that much, what more those countries that she'd already visited. Maybe generations of today may have not known her because she was gone to soon.
When I heard that two occupants of the same vehicle were dead, I just knew that she would die as well.
The bottom fell out of my world when they announced it. She was my celebrity crush when I was a boy.
I remember it so well. I was asleep when the phone rang. My mom woke me up to tell me that my sister had called to tell me about the news. She knew how much I loved Diana. I turned on CNN and at that point they were still reporting that she was injured. I assumed that her injuries were minor and went back to bed. I got up the next morning and turned on the TV and the first thing I saw was "the death of Princess Diana". I couldn't believe it, I burst into tears and sat watching CNN for the rest of the day. She was 1 year younger than me and I just couldn't comprehend that someone so young and who did so much good for so many had died.
I remember my sister waking me up to tell me the Duke of Edinburgh had died and she didn’t know whether to comfort me or not because of how deeply saddened we both were at his death. I remember suspending my daily war sessions for respect and we both watched the news together until the funeral.
There is something specially eerie and dramatic on those cartoons starting at 2:08 with the "major announcement" warning. I can't imagine being a British person randomly watching them so late at night just to find themselves in the middle of such a historic event.

I was at work and my mother called to say she had been injured, then called not too long after that to say she had died. I was in a state of complete shock.
I was 20 when the Queen died. It all started during my college lunch hour when I got a very rare text from Woody.EXE saying “I don’t want to tell you this but, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is seriously unwell, I think you should come home urgently my Queen” it was a very alarming text. I texted my college tutor Sophie to tell her that I’m heading home and told her the Queen is probably dying so she accepted me going home earlier than everyone else. I got home within an hour after having an anxiety attack on the bus 151 and the driver had to stop to help me out and I told him that the Queen was dying and then I let him continue driving us home afterwards, I found Woody.EXE very worried about the Queen ei saw him crying. I urged Mummy, Princess of Wales to come home immediately after I sent her Woody.EXE’s alarming text messages and she was home by 6pm uk time. About 6:30 that Thursday evening, the Queen was announced dead and my cries were so gut wrenching that Mummy had to leave the kitchen because she hates seeing me in pain; Woody.EXE proclaimed me as the Queen of Wales and Mummy was officially the Princess of Wales with my sister following suit of the Princess of Wales title 4 days after Mummy. Thursday 8th September 2022 was a horrible day for all 4 of us and the amount of affection we received from our fans outside our home was unreal for us all and we’ll never forget this night
I was nearly 20 when this happened, I can remember it all like it was yesterday. It was such a horrible and sad time in the UK and such a shock to us all. I remember watching all the reports and the funeral service, the emotional impact was felt by the majority of the country. Watching the funeral was very hard, seeing her son's following her and people in the crowd were crying and calling her name. The outpouring of emotion in the week following her death and up to the funeral was something I'd never experienced before and won't ever forget. Diana was a special lady and caring and compassionate, it was a sad day when we lost such a shining light.

Diana visited the homeless, those with AIDS, and the bereaved like dawn, and gave them light in their hour of darkness. She did great work for all people. Thank you Diana, you were very good, helpful and appreciated.

I could have met Diana in February if she was still alive today when I was seriously ill in hospital and I was only 20 when I nearly died. I could remember the shock in Wales when Woody.EXE announced the news of me his Queens illness and he’ll never forget the concern was spreading fast, an unforgettable moment for Wales in 2023
I’m older than most here. There were only two cases (in my lifetime anyways) of death of famous celebrities when I literally stopped doing whatever I was doing and cried like if a member of my own family had died: December 8, 1980 and August 30 1997. Both tragic, both British, both personal to me. People whom I never met in person, not even in a public event…yet their impact in our lives were so big, so great and so positive, their passing, specially so young and in such tragic manner was unbearable.
For context, I was 16 when Lennon died, and last year 40 years! after his dead, I was 16 years OLDER than the age he was when he died. For Diana, I still remember vividly 1981 the wedding day, even though I didn’t care for monarchy…but she was so beautiful, so gracious and so NORMAL! It was then surreal to me that less than 20 years after, she was gone. Took me a while to come to terms with the reality…
I remember both the dates! You know you're old when you remember Walt Disney, Churchill and Kennedy NOT Lennon and Princess Diana. I still cry when I see her on a video. She really was so important to so many all over the world. It was lunchtime on Sunday here in Australia. First we heard that Dodi had died and I cried for how sad Diana will be..then the news came that Diana was dead...I was inconsolable for weeks.
I was 12 when John died and 29 when Diana died; horrific deaths. Both of them captured the hearts of the world and our hearts were broken when they left us too soon. In Britain 🇬🇧 the flag was lowered and "God Save the Queen" played when Diana died.

Her death was so tragic and totally preventable. From the drunk chauffeur, to the paparazzi chasing the car, that crash should never have occurred. Such a waste of a vibrant young woman's life. She had so much more to give the world.

I was 13 when this happened I am now 39 and remember it like it was yesterday. I had a friend staying over for the Weeknd and we woke up to the sound of my mother crying in the early hours of the morning was a surreal time for the nation and the world. God bless you princess Diana ❤❤

Even though she didn't receive as much love as she deserved, she gave whatever love she had away and that is why the people loved her so much.
I remember that night, my cousins were all over and we started watching the footage and they don't know if she was going to make it and then they finally announced that she died it was just a big shock. To me she was one of those immortal people who couldn't die and then to hear them flat out say "The Princess of Wales is dead" was unbelievable
This is honestly one of the worst deaths Britain suffered as a Nation. So many people cried, grieved and felt very emotional over this.

I remember my father being heart broken when this news broke.
I will never forget this day. So sad. Cant believe after all these years I felt pain watching this and shed tears like it was my family. It's strange to feel love for someone I didn't know. I met her once in the east end of Glasgow on her visit. She came over because I was holding a child from the nursery. I shook her hand. She was special because of how she made people like me feel. She had no airs and Grace's she felt genuine to me. The day Diana died was a terrible day and it still hurts.
It is going to be the 25th death anniversary of Princess Diana but her memory lingers on our minds and it will never fade with age or time because we still talk about her
I remember coming down to breakfast on the Sunday morning and switching on the TV, the first thing we saw was Martin Lewis announcing her death and the caption 1961-1997 on the screen. I was too shocked at first to even speak and I turned to my mother and she was equally shocked. We sat and watched the events unfold for about 5 minutes before the shock wore off and the sadness hit home. We gave each other a hug and then I went off into another room and for some reason I just went down on one knee like I'd been winded. After a few minutes I went back into the living room and continued to watch the coverage. All normal TV programming on any channel was suspended and I think all sporting events were as well. I will never forget the national anthem being played over the video of the union jack at half-mast every 20-30 minutes after the latest news update from Paris had finished. A terrible day.
I lived so far away and born years after Diana's passing, but I still hear of it and can sense how it affect my parents, because they loved Diana so much they get teary when talking about her.
I will never forget that day it was my birthday and I was vacationing in Puerto Rico when my mom called with the news I was in utter shock...It's one of those times when we all remember where we were that day...

I was just 16 years old & had have her every photograph cutting from news paper & magazine . The cover page showed her beautiful portrait pics & side lined Diana dead@36 ' ( inset) her wreckage car. I remember this like it was yesterday, can’t believe it’s been 24 years. RIP Princess Diana.

I remember her death as if it was yesterday. The whole week leading upto her funeral was so immensely sad. I remember being in a packed tough pub with my mates. The Queen made a speech from Buckingham Palace. The whole pub fell into total and utter silence to listen to her. When she finished the whole pub broke out into applause.
It really was a surreal week
I remember Mummy telling me Diana was dead in 2021 and was very devastated because I was born just 5 years after Diana’s death; Mummy was 18 at the time and she’s nearly 44 now

I was just 15 when I was just as loved as Diana was when I ate Remembrance Sunday in 2017; the crowds we’re saying “No one can be respectful as her!” I’m nearly 21 now and still remain loved. I was a year 10 student, in Pakistan. I remember the whole family gathering in the lounge and praying. Diana had visited Pakistan a couple of times prior to the crash, and had left an entire nation in love.
I remember everyone in my family extremely sad.

I remember this happening; for the rest of this day, and a few days after, there was nothing but coverage of this event, and later Diana’s life, on every TV channel. I also remember a lot of small businesses and local public services closed in this day and on the day of her funeral; it seemed like for so much longer.
For those too young or not around when Diana was alive, she was a super superstar so when she died it was so unbelievable. How could a vibrant, kind, super superstar die just like that. Everybody felt it and I think still remembers the shock of that awful news.
People born after this event cannot fathom how famous Princess Diana was.

I had gotten up at 4.30 to go-to work for 6am. I saw the news come on and say she'd been in an accident, I went and got ready for work came back with a cup of coffee at about 5.30 and the newsreader Nicholas Owen was handed a piece of paper and his face dropped, he then said that she had died. At first I thought, no can't be, then he said it again and if I'm honest I sat and cried. I went to work and they were playing candle in the wind on the radio and a work colleague said to me " why are they playing this song over and over " I said because of Princess Diana. What about her ? she said, so replied that she'd been killed and she wouldn't believe me, then radio presenter said it and she just stood crying her eyes out. One thing Diana had and that was the sympathy and love of the British public.
Seeing all these again makes me terribly sad.

I never knew about princess Diana, but the way my mom talks about her, she was very loved and it was devastating when she died. She spoke the same of when JFK died.
I was 6 years old when this happened. It was the first world event I remember happening as a kid.
I remember getting up in the morning and see my parents watching TV. My mom was in tears and my dad was in disbelief.
I asked what happened and I’ll never forget the words my mom said
“We just lost a very wonderful person in a car crash”.
I wasn't born for amother 3 and a half years and I'm absolutely sobbing over this. I can't even imagine what it would've felt like to find this out as it happened. RIP, Princess Diana. What a gorgeous, charismatic and wonderful woman.
I was 9 years old when I saw Peter Jennings report this. Even then, with nowhere near the understanding of who Diana was as a person, I was inconsolable. This will never not be heartbreaking. Her humanity and vulnerability are what made her so beautiful and special. She was an ordinary person in extraordinary circumstances.
You were a very mature and compassionate person, to feel that way at such a young age, i’m sure your parents are very proud of you.

I was a young girl at home watching tv with my family. When this news popped up on my tv. Something I’ll never forget.
I learned about her passing on a local alternative rock radio station. I was 16, didn't really care much for royalty as an American. Nonetheless tremendously sad. She seemed like an unusually nice person for someone in her position.
im an English lad , in n out of prison most my life and I'm sat here 20th Aug 2020 cryin my fucking eyes out , I loved this woman when I was growing up I lived in pubs and always watched news and read papers and day she died we closed pub all day it was a Sunday and had only close fam and regulars in the pub everyone crying. rest in peace queen of hearts xxxxx

Twenty two years on, this brings back such desperately sad memories. Diana was such a breath of fresh air, gently changing the royal family and stirring the emotions of a very hidebound Britain. We loved her because she showed she loved us. The world became a poorer place the day she died.

I was born the same year as you and Mummy telling me that Diana died in 2021 was the worst news I received since the death of my beloved great grandmother in 2016. I was 19 when Mummy told me and she comforted me during the 24th anniversary. Then the Queen dies 2 years later after my mental health deteriorated greatly and the Queens death really affected my mental health once again and I was 20 years old when she died

I was 9 at the time. My siblings and I watched the news coverage at Argentinian TV in the early morning before going to school and still hopeful that it was "just" an accident and that she might recover. What does a kid know about death at that age... Well in the afternoon when we returned it was already confirmed that she had died. We watched the funeral and joined the moment of silence. And I was deeply moved by "Candle in the Wind" song.
This is one of those life events that you remember exactly where you were when you heard this news. I was almost 15 and at my boyfriends house. It was devastating.

I get it. There were obviously news updates regularly on what was happening so it was apt to just break into a program and say, 'the news is not good', like you would tell a friend who was following progress. And then the awful reality.

Princess Diana's death was one of my earliest memories when I was very young . I remember waiting for cartoons and all the channels was about her. I remember feeling the gravity of the situation and feeling really sad even though I didn't know her.

My dad came home from work early as he used to work nights and came and woke me up, when i saw the tv I ran upstairs and woke my mum up and she got up. I could hear the neighbours next door screaming and crying. Will never forget that Sunday morning. Rest in Peace Princess Diana xx

I was also a young Mom/Mum, also suffered terribly with postpartum/postnatal depression, when Diana passed. From sneaking to watch her wedding to Charles, to watching her raise her sons and a new lease on life after she divorced, I was absolutely devastated by the death of a woman my age, but having lived a completely different life across the ocean. I sobbed over her loss, watched the news endlessly, and was driven to a fever for crying so hard, watching her funeral. Thankfully, I'm recovered, and Diana is in heaven. May she Rest in Peace.

I remember this night very well, I was staying with my mom at my uncles house because we were looking for a place to live. It was a heavy time of transition for me, id soon be attending a new school in a new town and i was very nervous.. Then the news came of Diana in the car accident and my mom was constantly watching the news on it. I knew very little about her at the time, but the weight of the situation was felt strongly even for me. Overall its a very unique memory of mine.
