  • A good friend recently purchased this pistol and offered me the opportunity to do a video on it. We briefly go over the overt features such as the ambidextrous safety, generous beavertail, accessory rail, Novak cut sights, and commander style hammer before digging under the hood with a full detail strip.
    Some things are pretty nice for a budget-conscious 1911, while in other areas you can see certain sacrifices were made in favor of economy production.
    I was impressed that a steel mainspring housing was used. Overall quality seems quite good with a few minor deficiencies in machining quality, and some internal parts with a poor finish.
    My biggest complaint is lack of a preservative coating of oil, particularly on surfaces the typical user would never encounter during routine cleaning and maintenance.

      I appreciate the comment. I think you’ll be happy with it, especially if you see it as a foundation to build on.
      This is a handgun that seemingly has pretty good major components- but some of the smaller parts just aren’t very impressive.
      Taking that solid starting point and then adding in better components seems ideal. You have your own unique handgun that you got to experience doing work on, and improved the quality of it in the process of enhancing your own familiarity with it.
      To me that’s a win in every aspect.
      Edit: And shoot it. Bargain pistols like this just beg to be shot. Get it, then go a run it until you break it. Learn why it broke, fix it, and upgrade it. That’s the best part about the extravagance of options available in aftermarket for the 1911 design.

    I've had my 1911 S for about four weeks now. The gun is magazine finicky, but the Mec-Gar mags do work well in mine. It does only come with a single ACT mag. I've changed the grips and the barrel bushing to a match grade bushing, that took a lot of slop out of the barrel fit. I'm also changing the recoil spring for a heavier model due to the excessive ejection pattern. The sights are almost impossible to find replacements for. The gun is notorious for shooting low with factory sights and mine does. Overall, I'm exactly $500.00 into the gun with my mods and love it.

    • @ColterBrog
      @ColterBrog  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think being magazine finicky is more or less inherent to 1911s from what I can tell. They all seem to have certain brands they prefer.
      Have you checked with Dawson Precision for a shorter front sight?

      @@ColterBrog I'm new to 1911's and this is why 1911's never really interested me much, but all the cool kids have one right? Anyway, the front post is pretty tall, so I've filed it down to the dot and most people say it gets very close. On your recommendation, I see DP does in fact offer front posts for the Girsan. Thanks for the heads up, after shooting my trimmed down post, I'll measure it and purchase the DP sight of the correct height.

      @@MWR-lg9qp I always check with Dawson Precision and 10-8 Performance for sights that aren’t quite standard. When the others let me down, often I can find what I need through one of those two.
      I was under the impression these Girsan pistols accepted normal Novak cut sights, but looking at photos I do see a couple different styles. Like you, I’m not really big on 1911s for this reason. Just not enough standardization.

    • @MWR-lg9qp

      @craftsman2533 if I recall, ebay. It's a generic 1911 bushing and it fit perfectly. The recoil springs are also generic, so cheap and easy to find. Changing the front post and adding a generic flared mag well took some tooling but I got them. The grip screw conversion to standard 1911 threads was also a retap.

      This pistol was on loan to me from a friend just so I could disassemble it for the purposes of showing the manufacturing quality and giving it a mechanical assessment before he took it to the range.
      He hasn’t shot it extensively, but he hasn’t had any problems with it so far.
      My opinion is still that this is a perfectly usable pistol out of the box and also a solid slide and frame to use for a build if someone was inclined to do that. (Certainly isn’t necessary.)

    I have a girsan mc1911s, earth tone with black grips and for $550 with taxes out the door I cant complain. It came with an act-mag, case and barrel brush. Had it over a year and a lot of rounds have been through it. So far not a single jam, failed ejection or any other problem. No it's not a Kimber but I've noticed people with top shelf kimber 1911s $1200 & up, they seem hesitant to shoot it or carry it. They clean them weekly having shot it or not. They dont want to scratch or knick it and seem more interested in showing off an expensive name brand firearm, it's a kimber I get it but I'm the type i put stuff through its paces and so far this gun hasn't let me down, no odd wearing or anything i can find. I see people complain a lot about them mainly in posts 2 years or more older so I'm not sure if the earlier versions were a little hinky but mine us ok. No lose parts or rattling parts but for the price I think it's a decent gun, sure most anything or any brand can send out a lemon, I've seen glocks fail after only a few hundred rounds so like anything you could get a lemon. However, if you want a gun you can punish and have a blast with without breaking the bank, the girsan mc1911s .45 is the 1

    • @ColterBrog
      @ColterBrog  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This is tough to respond to… because I really think of Kimber as an entirely subpar and inferior pistol. I can’t imagine being afraid to carry a Kimber based on considering it too nice to carry. I wouldn’t carry a Kimber because based on experience they are just overpriced junk.
      I don’t have enough experience with Girsan to say it is better, but it’s difficult to be worse. I solidly rank Kimber as a bottom echelon 1911.
      Unless you’re going through one of the real big name makers (Ed Brown, Les Baur, Wilson Combat, Nighthawk, etc.) I don’t think it really matters. Halfway decent 1911s are fairly economical. A good 1911 costs a lot.
      So you probably made the right choice. I don’t think you’d actually get a better pistol with Kimber, and possibly a worse one with worse customer service. Kimber is not worth it.

    Why do people expect perfect finish from 500$ 1911 like it was 1000$ 1911?

    • @ColterBrog
      @ColterBrog  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don’t think most people do.
      Overall, the fit and finish is fairly good. Ultimately he decided that sear spring leg for the grip safety was a little too funky, so we went ahead and put a reduced weight sear spring in from Cylinder & Slide. It dropped the trigger pull weight by about a pound while also improving the build quality of the part.
      If it were mine I’d probably swap the hammer strut just because the stamping has an exceptionally rough finish. I’d swap the trigger out to probably an Ed Brown or similar to get the overtravel stop and improve the appearance.
      As far as the pistol as a whole goes, the major components are pretty nice. This video is intended to be an unbiased assessment of what can be expected for people considering one, and what parts they might want to swap out. That’s going to depend on the individual and their preferences.

    Brand new 1st time out today. With ACT Mag 2 feeding problems. Noticed when loading mag they tend to nose dive. 1st mag perfect tapping down after inserting each bullet. 2nd mag did not tap down 3rd did not feed and 5th did same. 2 out of 16 total. Problem is in the mag very tight lips on the mag. Buying Wilson Combat or Mec-Car next should fix it. 20yds, very accurate.

      Could also be a break in issue regarding the pistol or the magazines.

    Iwb holster recommendations anyone? And best mags to use as well as defensive ammo?

    • @ColterBrog
      @ColterBrog  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Holster recommendations are difficult. It’s very subjective and personal.
      For magazines, most people swear by Wilson Combat. I have also seen good success with Tripp. I would recommend trying a few different brands and selecting one based on your preferences and knowing that manufacturer’s geometry works well with your pistol- then stock up on whatever you select.
      Defensive ammo is much the same. Try a few different kinds to put the pistol through its paces and see what gives you reliable and consistent feeding with your magazines of choice. Popular options are Federal HST, Winchester Ranger, and Speer Gold Dot. Any quality jacketed hollow point from a reputable manufacturer that works well in your pistol is going to be a fine choice, though. Over time I have tended to prefer the less expensive options because it makes it easier to keep larger quantities on hand, shoot more of it to prove reliable function, and to routinely shoot the carried ammo and cycle in fresh from storage.

      Sticking your finger with a sliver of metal is an important part of the bonding process between you and your pistol. It’s a good thing.

    I’d be willing to bet that’s an ACT Mag and not a Mec-Gar. Act mags look very similar. They are very nice and at least one high end 1911 company (Alchemy Custom Weaponry) includes them with their guns. Good, reliable mags that can be found in the low $20s. That sounds like an improper sear engagement. Your options would be a warranty claim, taking it to a competent smith who can refit the sear engagement, or consider a paired hammer/sear set already fitted by a reputable manufacturer.
