Hellfire is one of the best Disney villain songs ever. It also goes well with his death, falling from the church holding onto a 'demon' and into literal fire. Poetic.
I am German and therefore grew up with all the german versions and synchro. I usually like both but with hellfire I have to admit that the english version lacks the kind of power the german version has (in my opinion), maybe you are interested in listening to this version too some time. :)
@@tschaytschay4555 The Dutch singing voices of many evil characters were done by an opera singer, so the villain songs tend to be very good in Dutch as well. i am actually pretty happy that quasimodo and esmeralda didn't end up together. quasi is quite literally the nice guy, in its actual literal meaning. he loves esmeralda and does everything for her, but instead of resenting her for not returning his feelings and feeling entitled to her love, he accepts that she loves phoebus and is clearly happy for them at the end, which was probably made easier because he actually befriends phoebus who is literally a knight in shining armor. quasi accepting esmeralda's "rejection" (he never actually made his romantic love for her known to her so she didn't even outright reject him) provides a model, especially for young boys, on how to go deal with romantic rejection in a healthy way. since quasi clearly loves esmeralda, he's able to be happy for her happiness instead of letting his jealousy consume him and make him bitter and spiteful, which is an all too common trope in media. also, side note, i love that you acknowledge phoebus as the truly great guy that he is. all that he does for the entire movie is just helping people out left and right. his and quasi's friendship is very cute too, i can see them going off on all sorts of adventures together and generally being best buds
I once heard a reviewer state that this movie is one of the few movies (Disney canon and otherwise) that validates the "friend zone". I think that your thoughts on Quasimodo and Esmeralda are an excellent expansion on that idea.
they are best friends I love PHOEBUS! I love him he is so kind! He is quite literally a knight in shining armor with his looks and his personality. I’m so glad he is in this movie. Because he gets to help our heroes defeat the villain. I love him he is so nice! And he does nothing but help people all he does is help people for the greater good! Like Quasimodo he is very selfless! And fun! He may be brash sometimes but he’s so kind to everybody he meets. And he is so goofy! I would do anything to hang out with PHOEBUS and Quasimodo and Esmeralda.
Quasimodo and Phoebe is sitting in a tree Quasimodo grabs a book. CBS opens it to discover it’s the hunchback of Notre Dame by victor Hugo. They begin to read it together and they discover everything that the book has in store. They discovered that book is a darker version of what could’ve happened to their story. And as Maraldo comes up to them sitting in a tree reading she climbs up and takes the book from them and starts to read it to them and they laughed together. Esmeralda is laughing at the characterizations of everybody in the novel. Just a cute moment. Between the three of them laughing and reading a book about their lives. Anyways what are you guys thinking? I think it’s cute do you guys?
I absolutely love all three of them and their relationship dynamics in the movie. There’s a one-sided rivalry of sorts when Quasi distrusts Phoebus’ intentions, but Phoebus never does anything but show genuine respect and good will towards Quasi and Esmeralda. I remember having a crush on him when I was a kid lol his character is just amazing.
I wouldn't say Frollo "fell for" her. that implies some level of affection or a crush. He lusted for her and became obsessed. Lust is a sin, he was strongly religious so he blamed the sin within him on her. The only way that sin would be purified and him forgiven would be if she became his truly or if he eradicated the "witch" causing him to sin. His motivation was literally him trying to appease God. It's why he's one of the worst disney villains in my book. People like him have and still do, exist.

There's an interesting psychological element to this film. Quasi, idealises Esmeralda, and Frollo sees her as a temptation, or desire to have, neither really see's her complete personality, but Phobus does. In fact he even gives Quasi the same respect, seeing him as a person, not something to be pitied or revolted by.
if I could befriend Quasimodo I would and I would say hi let’s become friends and I would just see him as a nice man. Just like how PHOEBUs saw Esmeralda as a human, I would do the same thing with Quasimodo.
bingo! That’s where my thoughts too that’s why I smell that she was Phoebe’s. It’s because he saw her as a human being. Not one way or the other just a human being so she chose him for that reason. Esmeralda chose Phoebus because she had romantic feelings towards him and she only kept calling Quasimodo friend cluing into the fact that she was only best friends with Quasimodo and had romantic feelings towards fetus. So yeah and Quasimodo decides to let Esmeralda come with Phoebus what about your decision of him as a young man. Because he realized how he and his master both sides Meralda and he decided it wasn’t right so he said I’m gonna let her go with a man who truly sees her as who she is as a person so he decided to let her go. What about your decision of him. What a mature decision of him! I applaud him for that! He made the right decision to let her go with a man who she truly had loved and had romantic feelings for. And the man who truly saw her for who she was. And one day Quasimodo would find a love of his own and live happily ever after. But for now he is content being excepted and having friends. But later he would find love. And live happily ever after with his lover.
I think it’s important to highlight that Frollo felt no positive emotion towards Esmeralda. He fetishized & lusted after her & hated himself more for feeling sexually attracted to someone he truly sees as subhuman. There are so many sociological aspects to this film that are relevant no matter what century you’re in & this is certainly one of them. Enjoyed your reaction!
What's weird is disney was just like hey let's add that. The baby www willingly given up in the book. Granted they couldn't make frollo an archdeacon so maybe there was no other way to put HIM in charge and have Quasi be in the bell tower but murder seems harsh.
i remember another comment saying when they saw this movie in theaters, people yelled at the screen to leave him alone during that heartbreaking scene at the festival. it brings me to tears all the time, it's so cruel.
I love him too he is as pure as an angel! When the people were mean to him my heart strings TUTTET like a guitar string! I felt like I wanted to cry because the young man didn’t deserve any mean treatment and he was only trying to live his life and have fun. And I wanted to cry because I felt so bad for the poor man. He’s my favorite character in this movie and my favorite Disney character of all time.
also can we just talk about how precious his voice is? His voice is so soft And it’s almost soothing and it always melts my heart whenever I hear his voice whenever he’s happy or calm or super excited I just love his voice. It has a distinctively Youthful sound to it. I just love his voice! And when he sings? He sings so well! He kind of reminds me of Snow White from Snow White and the seven dwarves, but braver and more cautious. Lol. And very acrobatic but some of his personality traits just remind me of snow white from Snow White and the seven dwarves lol.!
He’s the not only according to a Facebook poll I did. It was basically asking if I was the only one who liked the Gargoyles in Hunchback of Notre Dame and hated Dory in Finding Nemo. Guess what I wasn’t a lone on that.
If you look extremely close when Quasimodo pours the lava, you can see the details of it going through the water drains and out of the gargoyles mouths. I have watched this movie way too much and I love it!
Why does nobody talk about that line from the gargoyles? “After all, we’re only made of stone.” “We just thought you were made of something stronger.” GOLDEN! BEST LINE IN THE MOVIE!
My dad took me to see this in the theater when it came out. It was spectacular on the big screen. Easily one of my favorites. I'm so glad you watched it.
King Louie XI was the one in power during this time period. In this storyline, his other alias, Louis the Prudent, would be quite laughable, as he apparently stood by as one of his appointed officials practically burned the capital to the ground.
Notre Dame has been ruined several times in the past but it always returns, remember that the Notre Dame of Quasimodo's era would actually look completely different from the one we know today, they added greatly to it later on.. during the Revolution it was wrecked, then rebuilt. later still the story of Quasimodo was made so people would repair the thing after it fell into such a horrible state it was crumbling away.
I saw this in theaters the weekend it originally opened, and seeing the animation on the big screen was incredible, especially the opening, Out There, and and burning is Paris at the end. And the music is incredible. This is my favorite Disney movie
You would recognize The voice of Quasimodo as the actor who played Mozart in the Best Picture winner, 'Amadeus' for which he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor
6:20 The story of Frollo and Quasimodo is far more tragic in the novel. In the book, Frollo is the archdeacon, not the judge, and names Quasimodo out of genuine love and care, having found him abandoned at the steps of the cathedral. Quasimodo is an actual ecclesiastical name. It was common for people to be baptized according to the day they were born, and Frollo found the baby on Quasimodo Sunday (the following one to Easter Sunday), a festivity dedicated to all non-baptized babies. This is because, according to medieval Catholic Church's teachings, non-baptized babies are just "half formed" as they are not part of the Church.
@@summerrose8110 then how should it be said to be grammatically correct. I'm talking about a specific group of people so I referred to them. If you're going to give constructive criticism it needs to include some sort of correction. And I'm not stalking you if you're everywhere.
In the original book, Ezmeralda was afraid of Quasimodo cause the way he looked but he loved her. Frollo managed to kill her and years later when someone dug up her grave, the person saw another skeletton holding Ezmeralda and it was Quasimodo. When she died, he could not live without her, so he crawl himself into her grave and hugged her until he died. I was around 13-14 years old when i read the book at school and 15 years later i still remember it. Its very dark compare to Disney version :) Also that guard has the same voice actor as Patrik, so yes it is indeed Patrik Star.
So glad you finally watched this one! Such a fantastic soundtrack and an underrated movie. You mentioned listening to the musical cast recording, but there is also a French musical called 'Notre Dame de Paris' which follows the original novel much more closely than the Disney movie/musical. It has some beautiful songs and the staging is pretty interesting.
YEEEEES! I was waiting for this moment... one of the most dark, realistic, tragic, sad and beautiful disney movies, everyone should know this MASTERPIECE, or at least hear the amazing soundtrack.
The music in this man... as you obviously know... is top tier. God it's good. Watching Frollo self-destruct as his lust and what it means that he has lust, tear apart his professed righteousness and beliefs... and he knows it. The Hell Fire song is just a masterpiece. Insane animation. This was a solid out of the park hit for Disney.
I’ve been struggling for months now and the fact that I came back and saw the sponsor of the video really felt like it was meant to be. So thank you to you and Better Help
This is one of my favorite Disney movies, but it's *really* important to point out that "gypsy" is a slur for the Romani people, and the creators was not aware of this fact when they made this film.
Thank you so much for reacting to this, it belongs to my top 3 Disney movies and it also has my favorite Disney-soundtrack too. I love "God Help The Outcasts" and all the other songs in this movie ("A Guy Like You" being my least favorite) but I also would've wanted to see "Someday" and "Made of Stone" in the actual movie as well. But I understand they might have been a little too dark for the "family movie" (even though this is one of the most darkest Disney-movies altogether). I'm kinda glad that Quasimodo didn't end up with Esmeralda in the end. Someone on YT has commented it this way: Quasimodo saw her as an angel and Frollo saw her as a devil. Phoebus was the only one who saw her as who she truly was. I agree with it. Esmeralda and Phoebus are one of my favorite Disney-couples and I'm glad all of them became friends in the end. Like you said, Quasimodo found love within himself and by the fact that without Frollo's influence, people finally accepted him. I love how the child from the beginning of the movie is the one who takes the first step, because it reminds us how genuinely and in a good way curious and openhearted children can be compared to some of the adults.
Those other songs were created after the Disney movie was made, for the stage version in which they deliberately decided to go darker and stick closer to the book. They couldn't have included those songs in the movie even if they'd wanted to, bc those songs didn't exist yet. XD
this was one of my favorite disney movies growing up! (yes i was a dramatic little child) and i was so excited when they came out with the musical a few years ago. the musical is a bit darker and closer to the novel although both are far less messed up than the novel.
I feel like you would love the movie Labyrinth with David Bowie. Musical numbers to die for from a rock legend. It's one of my favorites and a lot of people don't know about it. ❤️
The stage musical was based off of this film, though the musical follows the book more closely (Made of Stone, the tragic ending). Also, probably the reason Frollo reminds you of Javert is that Les Miserables and Hunchback were both written by Victor Hugo.
If you speak italian or french you could also watch the european musical "Notre Dame de Paris" here on youtube, it's absolutely incredible, so powerful! Also, the story is faithful to the book and the music is original too
This Movie came before the muscal, which also explains why that has a few more songs in it, but the musical also draws more closely from the original Novel by Victor Hugo, hence it's even darker tone
There actually was an opera that adapted Hunchback back in 1836 called La Esmeralda. It was composed by Louise Bertin and the Libretto was written by Victor Hugo himself. The premiere was a colossal failure though. There have also been multiple film adaptations before Disney's. A silent film in the 20s, a sound film in the 30s, and a french film in 50s. The latter being known to be the most faithful.
Well, this went nothing like the book. In the original story Esmeralda does take pity on Quasimodo but she also makes it VERY clear she does not like him, it's just that she has this pathological thing with helping others which actually lands her in a loveless marriage with a man named Gringoire whom she only married so the Court of Miracles wouldn't kill him for trespassing, she very quickly decides to cheat on him with Phoebus, who himself is engaged to a woman called Fleur-De-Lys, when Frollo pushes himself on her and she rejects him he stabs Phoebus and frames her, Phoebus immediately turns against her and she is captured and hanged, during her execution Frollo makes an off-hand comment about her and Quasimodo kills him in a rage, then dies of starvation while holding onto her corpse which was thrown under a bridge near the whorehouse while Phoebus marries Fleur. It is also discovered that Esmeralda was not born a gypsy but rather she was taken from a catholic woman as payback for Frollo taking Quasimodo, and she reconnects with her mother right before her execution.
Hi, I know you probably didn’t intend to come off as offensive but the G word is in fact a slur! The best way to refer to this group of people is romani, at least that’s what most of them prefer. I know in America this slur isn’t really known so often americans don’t even know when watching this movie, and they are throwing it around a lot in the movie too, but still, just a heads up.
To this day I struggle to watch the scene where they tie him down and start throwing things at him. I never understood why they were treating him like that just because he looks different.
Actually, in the novel Frollo named the baby Quasimodo because he found him on Quasimodo's Day, a religious day that I've only known from the novel. But yeah, it's sounds like half-formed and fits movie Frollo's character ^^ .
when Quasi tries to release of the chains the chorus sings LIBERA ME DOMINE (In LATIN Release me Lord) Is fun how being a native spanish speaker i was capable to understand a little of the movie songs.
I think it was The Musical first. 7:12 Man, I can’t Sing. 7:34 Patrick Star. 7:46 Phoebus is voiced By Kevin Kline, who voiced Tulio in dreamworks “Road to El dorado”.
This film came first, then the stage musical added songs and changed some lyrics. And made the ending and backstory more accurate to the novel aka DEPRESSING lol
This Disney movie came before the Disney stage play. As you probably noticed, there are a few song changes. The play is longer and a bit more book accurate, so they are songs in there that are either just extra or that were cut from the movie probably because it was for a younger audience ,and you can't have it too long. Some songs were just swapped out for other ones. Also this story was originally a book by Victor Hugo, the same person who was the author of Les Mis.
Missed opportunity to thrown in the line: Guard: You think he's ugly now? (Throws tomato at Quasi...) Now that's ugly! TELL ME YOU COULDN'T HEAR PATRICK SAY THAT!
I remember there was an old animated HoND where instead of tomatoes being throw at Quasi. They held him down and were whipping him instead. I balled my eyes out. I don’t remember the movie but it was heartbreaking.
The real story is so sad because Esmerelda dies in the end and Quasi is so heartbroken and grief stricken that while holding onto her lifeless body he starves himself because he refuses to leave her side.

this is one of my favorite movies! I love Quasimodo and the fact that he goes from zero to hero like Hercules. And I love how Quasimodo sings about his desires every day all day. He loves to sing! And the songs are good audition songs. Very! And I just love Quasimodo his voice. It’s very gentle and kind. This is a fun movie! Glad I watched it. And yes I also love the gargoyles. May be a tad annoying but they’re better than having no comical relief at all.
The Movie was first. The Stage Musical was made 1999 for Germany, Berlin it runned for 3 Years or so. Then a few years ago the Stage Musical was revived in english, based mostly on the German production, but a few thing where Changed. The first german version had the 3 Gargoyles though, but in the english version there where replaced for the Saints made of stone. And the Scene in the Place of Miracles is a different one then in the new english version. And in the new version Quasimodo is related to Frollo, wich was not the case in the first version.

Why did I not know that you’re a musical theater actor?!
I love the darker Disney movies! And this movie had one of the best soundtracks!
Facts.
Oh this and the OG Pinocchio movie.
@@calebray1834 we don't talk about the trash that is the new one.
This is probably my favorite Disney musical ever. Also yes, that is the same actor that plays Patrick in SpongeBob
I'm just waiting for him to say the story of the Ugly Barnacle.
I think you're the only reactor on here to actually liked the Gargoyles.
@@summerrose8110 why you blaming doug walker? 😂. Most people (including me) really don't like the gargoyles too
@@shreb6182
I don't love them but they're okay
He’s the not only according to a Facebook poll I did. It was basically asking if I was the only one who liked the Gargoyles in Hunchback of Notre Dame and hated Dory in Finding Nemo. Guess what I wasn’t a lone on that.
"They're sheep, not popcorn." Why did that make me laugh more than anything else?
If you look extremely close when Quasimodo pours the lava, you can see the details of it going through the water drains and out of the gargoyles mouths. I have watched this movie way too much and I love it!
Why does nobody talk about that line from the gargoyles?
“After all, we’re only made of stone.”
“We just thought you were made of something stronger.”
GOLDEN! BEST LINE IN THE MOVIE!
My dad took me to see this in the theater when it came out. It was spectacular on the big screen. Easily one of my favorites. I'm so glad you watched it.
7:56 I just did a Google search and it actually is the same voice actor as Patrick. Good call lol
Also the other guard was voiced by plankton😂
Can we please get the full clip of you singing along to ‘out there’
Maybe some day♥️
Yeah, I'd like that too...! :D

The question is; was Louis I (the King) just chilling at his palace, sipping on some wine while Paris was literally going through a witchhunt?
King Louie XI was the one in power during this time period. In this storyline, his other alias, Louis the Prudent, would be quite laughable, as he apparently stood by as one of his appointed officials practically burned the capital to the ground.
Great reaction, honestly I've never seen someone throw that much shade on Frollo, it's absolutely hilarious 🤣.
Oh frollo…. He’s a @&&@$$)&$&
7:09 Can we talk about Evan's voice? He didn't showcase it as freely as I believe he should've, but he's good!
Ohhhh poor Notre Dame. I’m so glad I got to see it before the fire. I love this movie. God Help The Outcasts is one of my favourite songs.
Yesss
Notre Dame has been ruined several times in the past but it always returns, remember that the Notre Dame of Quasimodo's era would actually look completely different from the one we know today, they added greatly to it later on.. during the Revolution it was wrecked, then rebuilt. later still the story of Quasimodo was made so people would repair the thing after it fell into such a horrible state it was crumbling away.
@@StickySauce101 Heck the original story was mostly about the need to preserve it
The coolest thing is the gobin/demon statue that smiled at frollo when his death was happening.
To this day the scene where he climbs up with Esmeralda and yells Sanctuary gives me chills
If you think HOND is an unDisney type of movie, watch "The Emperor's New Groove". It's like nothing Disney has ever done before (BOOM BABY!)
That movie is MY LIFE !!!!
Does anyone know if he reacted to it? He really needs to!
My fav Disney movie. JUST IN TIME FOR LUNCH
grew up watching this movie and love the bells
The movie came first. The stage production came second.
I saw this in theaters the weekend it originally opened, and seeing the animation on the big screen was incredible, especially the opening, Out There, and and burning is Paris at the end. And the music is incredible. This is my favorite Disney movie
"She can't die, this is a Disney movie!"
That Disney movie earlier: *talks about the murder of a mother, genocide, lust and eternal damnation*
Protip to everyone who watches the movie in general, be reminded that "g*psy" is a slur, Romani is the term you should be using.
@@summerrose8110 how else am I to phrase it lol

In the original book, Ezmeralda was afraid of Quasimodo cause the way he looked but he loved her. Frollo managed to kill her and years later when someone dug up her grave, the person saw another skeletton holding Ezmeralda and it was Quasimodo. When she died, he could not live without her, so he crawl himself into her grave and hugged her until he died.
I was around 13-14 years old when i read the book at school and 15 years later i still remember it.
Its very dark compare to Disney version :)
Also that guard has the same voice actor as Patrik, so yes it is indeed Patrik Star.
i agree this movie is great with great messages and interesting character development from the characters and the story. great review.
Frollo and Mother Gothel would’ve gotten along so much. I AM NOT JOKING
I just looked it up, and YES! It's him!!!! Patrick star is the guard!!!!
Guessing the guard's actual name is definitely not Rick. XD
"Out There" is one of my favorite Disney songs. It pops into my head once in a while at random. lol
5:30 that's my favourite rendition of the stage play, their version of "Out There" is my all time favourite!
This is one of my favorite Disney movies, but it's *really* important to point out that "gypsy" is a slur for the Romani people, and the creators was not aware of this fact when they made this film.
R.I.P. David Ogden Stiers and Tony Jay The Archdeacon and Judge Frollo are now in Heaven 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😢😢😢😢😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😢

This is so crazy I just rewatched this movie myself yesterday and come to find out this video was posted yesterday too!
The hunchback of Notre Dame, when Disney had balls
LOL
8:57 that scene literally makes me cry even if i'm not watching
This is my favourite Disney Movie. I still remember thos bells when the movie started, this amazing opening, i was 12 love it till this day.
XD
@@kiryn5977 Oh, okay, makes sense. Thanks for explaining. 🙂
this was one of my favorite disney movies growing up! (yes i was a dramatic little child) and i was so excited when they came out with the musical a few years ago. the musical is a bit darker and closer to the novel although both are far less messed up than the novel.
Frollo: And he shall smite the wicked and plunge them into the fiery pit!
God: Well, if you insist....
LOL
I feel like you would love the movie Labyrinth with David Bowie. Musical numbers to die for from a rock legend. It's one of my favorites and a lot of people don't know about it. ❤️
Yes!!!
"Were You once an outcast, too?" -Esmerelda asking God
I think the better question is when wasn't He? -Evan
PREACH, MY MAN!!!! - Me
The stage musical was based off of this film, though the musical follows the book more closely (Made of Stone, the tragic ending). Also, probably the reason Frollo reminds you of Javert is that Les Miserables and Hunchback were both written by Victor Hugo.
Victor Hugo is amazing. His books are great🥰😍
@@akirahatson2593 Absolutely! His stories are so powerful.
But yeah, it's sounds like half-formed and fits movie Frollo's character ^^
.
Paul Kandel the person who does the voice of clopin (the main male gypsy) has an awesome vocal range
when Quasi tries to release of the chains the chorus sings LIBERA ME DOMINE (In LATIN Release me Lord)
Is fun how being a native spanish speaker i was capable to understand a little of the movie songs.
This movie was my entire childhood and is the reason I love theater and am who I am
Javier literally said , and I quote, “DO NOT FORGET MY NAME…”🤣
Missed opportunity to thrown in the line:
Guard: You think he's ugly now? (Throws tomato at Quasi...) Now that's ugly!
TELL ME YOU COULDN'T HEAR PATRICK SAY THAT!
I remember there was an old animated HoND where instead of tomatoes being throw at Quasi. They held him down and were whipping him instead. I balled my eyes out. I don’t remember the movie but it was heartbreaking.
There were a surprising amount of animated Hunchback of Notre Dame movies, most of which did *not* have Disney-quality animation...
“What a woman” MY FAVORITE QUOTE IN DISNEY HISTORY!
7:34 The guard and Patrick have the same voice actor (Bill Fagerbakke)
I played Javert when I graduated from high school. Was a challenge to learn how to do it but I was trained by a opera teacher
The real story is so sad because Esmerelda dies in the end and Quasi is so heartbroken and grief stricken that while holding onto her lifeless body he starves himself because he refuses to leave her side.
Esmeralda is still my #1 most beautiful Disney female lead.
Is she an official Disney princess?
She isn't, but sometimes she's listed as a popular Disney heroine.
And yeah, she's my favorite too!

Movie secret; in this Disney version the real villain is Clopin who is a shape shifting demon and is also the Archdeacon. He manipulates everyone.
this is one of my favorite movies!
Its easily my favorite Disney movie
I love how frills face turns more and more inhuman as the movie progresses. His skin is grey and his eyes red in the end
First thing to know about frollo he doesn't love Esmeralda he lusts after her this show taught me the difference better than the definition it's self
