Fun fact: Frollo's prayers in "Hellfire" are actually answered, and he is given a last chance to redeem himself. When the guard opens the door and tells him that Esmeralda is gone, he is surrounded by a blue peaceful light. It's an "angel" metaphorically trying to help Frollo to give up on his obsession for Esmeralda and come to the light of God. But then Frollo refuses salvation, embraces his lust and hatred and turns back to the fireplace, representing Hell and his damnation.
But of course he couldn't, because he wasn't a monster and showed mercy. Then Frollo causes his own demise by refusing to show mercy in return. A very fitting end.
Yeah one of my favorite parts is how Quasi doesn’t let frollo fall even after all of this, cause he was a such a decent person And it’s frollo’s malice and hatred that ends up destroying himself instead.
I'd like to point out that Frollo doesn't "love" Esmeralda: he lusts after her. He doesn't value her as a person or human being, he only desires her physically (hence the hair sniffing scene). Love is selfless while lust is selfish.
Frollo's got a bit of lustful streak in him, i can imagine Gothel seducing him and using him to fulfill her evil plans. They betray each other in the end.
I actually saw on other people's reactions to this movie A lot of people making that association the toxic faux parents and how they could basically take over the Disney universe if they put their minds together I would have liked this comment but it was at 69 when I got to it I wasn't going to ruin it but when I clicked to actually leave this comment it's at 71 so now I will like it cuz I've been watching this for about 12 minutes and it has gotten like since then apparently
Quasimodo not getting Esmeralda and actually letting her go directly parallels Frollo's arc. While both of them wanted Esmeralda, Quasi loved her enough to let her go while Frollo viewed her as an object to posses and refused to let her go. Yet another way to show how Quasi is the man and that Frollo is the monster.
it’s really refreshing imo that quasimodo doesnt “win” esmeralda’s romantic love at the end. like. the fact that they don’t switch her affections on a whim makes all of them feel more like real, believable people. and they all end up having important bonds with each other even if quasi’s ones are just friendship. i just think that aspect of this movie is nice. a lesser movie would’ve had esmeralda go “oh! i love you now instead!” which. nah it doesn’t work like that
I completely agree, it’s so refreshing It makes the most sense for her and Phoebus to end up together Cause there’s 3 guys who have strong opinions on her: Quasi sees her as an angel (“Heaven’s Light”) Frollo sees her as a devil/temptress Whereas Phoebus sees her as a person (one of his first comments being “what a woman!”) So it makes the most sense for her to fall for the guy who sees her as a person, rather than someone who idolises or looks down on her
@@samkelly4132 THIS! Quasi had literally never met another woman who had been nice to him. He wants to fall in love, we know from Heaven's Light. Of course he's going to feel an attachment to her and confuse it for romantic. Quasi wasnt in a clear enough place. It would have been too early for his social development to have a healthy romance
It's such a good parallel to Frollo, too. Frollo never would have accepted Esmerelda in the arms of another, showcasing how she was more of an ideal to him than a person. Quasi teetered on the "nice guy" brink, but Esmerelda's happiness was more important to him. Also helps that Phoebus is a genuinely good dude, not some jock that Esmerelda needs to be "saved" from. Such a good representation of entitlement versus true respect.
not to mention that crack to the head. she could have easily sustained a closed head injury, which is very dangerous since the brain can swell to the point of death.
Both are viable explanations. I usually wrote it off as a cracked skull with Disney's patented lack of blood, but with how she fell, broken neck is a viable option. Stone stairs with sharp edges do not mix well with the gaps in your neck vertebrae.
Notre Dame was damaged many times in past, what happened recently is relatively tame compared to the disrepair and damage it received in past.. many parts of Notre Dame shown in the cartoon were not even around in Quasimodo's day but added by Disney because they are so iconic, the Notre Dame of Quasimodo's day was a completely different building than the one we see today.. the reason they made a book on Quasimodo was to revive interest in the building as it was almost a complete ruin during the era the book was made. so compared to all that Notre Dame is doing remarkably well.
Frollo is by far the most evil and disgusting Disney villain ever, probably because he's not magic or anything, he's just a man with no heart who lusts after a girl that he wants to kill. I always found the villains without magic powers way more scary cause they're more real!
I agree. That said, *aside* from Frollo, what other purely human Disney villains stand out the most to you? Lady Tremaine and McLeach are my nominations.
Fun fact: the scene of Quasimodo declaring sanctuary while holding esmerelda above his head was animated by James Baxter, aka an absolute legend of animation. Some of the best animated shots were done by him, he’s worked on beauty and the beast, spirit, this film, the lion king, and a whole host of others, I really recommend checking out his work, he’s really good.
James has said that the scene you're talking about, where Quasimodo is scaling the wall to hold Esmerelda up, is his favorite scene of the movie. Right as Quasimodo reaches the guardrail and the camera is swinging around to catch him glaring at us from under his arm...James calls that his "King Kong shot". I've said it before and I'll say it again, James is probably the greatest living animator.
That's a good clarification. Frollo is a very effective depiction of how awful misogynists are. What sucks most about Frollo is that dudes just like him exist in the real world.
What makes it so scary is that he's the most realistic villain. It's not some goofy evil villain that can't happen. The most horrifying thing is that he is an actual villain of this life and in our society.
I think what makes Frollo so terrifying as opposed to other Disney villains is because he's realistic. There's no fantasy elements to his character and his motives and personality... there are people in real life who think an like Frollo
@Saiyasha27 yeah he isn't evil he was defending the castle and Flynn at the beginning was a villain he was stealing the Lost princesses tiara but he ended up saving his own ass cuz he ended up bringing it to the Lost princess who then was found because of him it's the only reason he got to keep his life
What's brilliant about Frollo as a character is not that he genuinely loves Esmeralda; he doesn't. He *lusts* after her, which is a completely different thing. And despite being a rigidly religious man, who has always prided himself on not falling to the same temptations most people do, the minute he gets his first taste of real lust, he's done. Just like most other people. Actually, he's ever WORSE at controlling his desire than most people, because he's kept himself shut away from the world for *so long,* he doesn't know how to healthily deal with lust or desire.
Interesting fact, Tony Jay the voice actor for Frollo had trouble reaching and holding the final few notes of Hellfire he was told he could work on it or if he was unable they could get someone else to voice over the song Tony Jay was so excited to be working on a Disney film that he wanted to commit and so he took singing lessons to hep him so he could nail that part of the song. RIP he was such a talented and committed performer and actor.
Frollo doesn't have a crush for anyone except himself. What he feels for Esmeralda is lust and obsession. He can't begin to understand what true love is.
This is one of those films you hate/are scared of when you're little, and then you rewatch them with new eyes years later and realise what a masterpiece they are
And it's also one of those movies where you go: "Oh no..... OOOOH, NOOOOO...!" when you catch the really dark undertones of what Frollo's issues are. x,D
This reaction was enjoyable. I thought you’d get angrier at Frollo (Old Guy in dress with Mushroom Hat). He’s one of many villains who pissed me right off as a kid. I wanted to see Quasimodo kick his ass. But watching it as a grown up, I’m glad I didn’t because it shows how different the two are and how much better Quasimodo is as a man compared to Frollo.
SPOILERS for the book So, the book is even more dark and twisted than this is. Wish someone would have told me that when I read the abridged version as a 12 year old. Traumatized for life. In short, they're changing up the order of the way things are happening and a little bit of the motivations. Frollo found Quasimodo in an orphanage as a baby, so I have no idea what happened to his mother. Quasimodo in the Fools Festival is combining the Festival of Fools where he's paraded about, but also with a completely separate part where Quasimodo was found guilty of a crime and publicly punished, when Esmerelda came up to give him water. Quasimodo is also not an ugly duckling so to speak. He is foul tempered and mostly deaf, so he doesn't speak normally. They actually captured the original idea in a few scenes where I stood there thinking, "That's the Quasimodo from the book". My recollection of him is that he became protective of Esmerelda, not unlike how a dog might get possessive of their human. Either way, I don't remember him being well spoken, I don't remember his motivations being made very clear, and I don't recall him being too intelligent. Which are all completely understandable giving the conditions he grew up in. Esmerelda is also accused of trying to murder Phoebus, when this was actually done by Frollo, as well as witchcraft. They torture her until she confesses and then she's sentenced to death. Phoebus is mostly a side character. He and Esmerelda had a romance until Frollo tried to murder him to get Esmerelda, he survived by he believed it was Esmerelda who had tried to kill him. The book ends with Esmerelda being hanged after nearly getting away from the guards, her body being thrown into the graveyard to rot and then when the soldiers come back a year later they find her skeleton and next to it is another misshapen skeleton holding her hand. DISNEY! The original book was written by Hugo for multiple reasons. Notre Dame was in danger of being torn down, so Hugo wrote this story as a way to show that with all the cruelty, the darkness of humanity, Notre Dame still stands watching, that Notre Dame will continue beyond our fleeting lives; he wanted to make people appreciate to building to stop it from being destroyed. He also was throwing in messages about the corruption of the church and it's overuse of power, as Frollo was a priest in the original. This is the same guy who wrote Les Miserables, he was an opinionated political activist, painter, architect, and writer
Romance with Phoebus... He was promised to another girl but wants to have sex with Esmeralda because she's pure and beautiful. He didn't saved her either because it would be a proof that he was cheating on his fiance. Esmeralda didn't even know Phoebus survived Frollo's attack.
@I Have No Scream But I Must Mouth Yeah, pretty much everyone in the book is a giant dick except Esmeralda, who's just inexplicably naive, doesn't like Quasimodo, and turns out to be a French girl who was kidnapped by Gypsies as a baby.
I heard a theory that book Quasimodo may have had a learning disability. I remember there being a line about Frollo 'taking great pains' to teach him to read and write. By this point he'd already taught Jehan and possibly Gringoire too so that implies he's decent at teaching but it perhaps took Quasimodo longer to pick it up. I also interpret him has being autistic. Autism wasn't identified when the book was written so this wouldn't have been intentional but it feels like the bells and the cathedral was his special interest. There was also a line in the book about him seeming to be in silent conversation with the statues for hours. Admittedly this could be due to how other people treat him and as he lost his hearing it was harder for him to communicate. Either way, I really relate to him and see him as an autistic icon.
The transition from Heavens Light to Hellfire is one of the best juxtaposition of songs I've ever seen and brings me chills everytime. Also you should see the sequel.
To be fair every song by quasi and frollo are duets, Out there, heaven’s light/hellsfire each are sung by both quasi and frollo and each reveals the nature and character of each of them.
@@SessVlogs exactly, that's what I mean, gotta see to believe. One of the worst sequels on Disney. Downgrade on every single aspect. But is always a need to watch so you can appreciate the first one the most and make fun of it.
The thing is Frollo didn’t love or have a crush on Esmeralda, he was just lusting immensely for her and blaming it on her “witchcraft” (classic patriarchy) because he views himself as a pure and holy man who wouldn’t sin, the hooded figures in “hellfire” are saying “mea culpa, mea maxima culpa” which is a praying for when you ask for forgiveness of sin, it means in latin “through my fault, through my most grievous fault”, he refuses to accept that he’s corrupt and sinful and the hooded figures around him are his obsession with trying to justify it and being holy accusing him of sinning, his own lunacy and madness (that is seen again during his death scene when he sees the devil roaring at him as he falls to his death, bringing him to hell), his own madness was his downfall Frollo is definitely one of my favorite villains Hellfire plays right after Heaven’s Light to contrast the different effect Esmeralda had on Quasimodo and Frollo Frollo looks tired the next day because it’s implied that he spent the last night... Well... Having some impure thoughts I also love Esmeralda’s God Help the Outcasts because she “isn’t supposed to be praying because she’s a gipsy” but she’s the most selfless of all the people praying there, while all the Christians at the church are praying for material and personal gain, all she asks for is help to all of the people who are also oppressed and doing even worse than her She is shown walking in the opposite direction of the other praying people to simbolize that contrast Also, the parts that make me cry the most are : “Yes I know I'm just an outcast I shouldn't speak to you Still I see your face and wonder Were you once an outcast too?” (Esmeralda, you have no idea...) “God help the outcasts Or nobody will” And also : “I thought we all were the Children of God” Esmeralda is incredible and should honestly be a Disney Princess because she’s an amazing model for young girls
@@tobsonasanya4765 Listen to the song. "I ask for wealth...I ask for fame...I ask for glory to shine on my name... I ask for love I can posess...I ask for God and his angels to bless me."
Oh, yes. Mary may not be the official patron of the outcast, but she spent *years* on the run and likely faced a lot of whispered comments about her pregnancy.
I don't know exactly how old welchy is but I guarantee he was probably still in diapers last time I dated I basically gave up on relationships a long time ago Last time I had an official boyfriend was in 2001 last time I dated anyone the date we had planned for number three was to see The Simpsons movie and he told me the day he wanted to do it but never called me with a time
Same... I genuinely just don't see the point in relationships anymore, all the girls I meet/ know of seem to just dislike me, even when I'm trying my hardest lmao. Guess I just need to find someone with no standards.
1:40 Disney doesn't show bloody injuries, or if they do it's SUPER rare and Very brief. But if you rewatch, her head hits the edge of the stairs pretty hard. In real life, that would definitely fracture the skull and be a life threatening injury and there would be LOTS of blood. And in those days, where they didn't have medicine and hospitals or EMTs, it was definitely a death sentence. Also, in the original novel this is based off of, Quasi dies along with Esmeralda. They're bricked up inside a room and decades later, their skeletons are discovered intertwined.
And Esmeralda is a literal child. They describe how she's so small and light that hanging her is difficult. Her neck won't break so an executioner puts his weight on her so she'll actually die (for a crime she's falsely accused of).
From my perspective, it seems like though Quasi loved Esmeralda his love morphs later on towards maternal feelings. He falls in love with her beauty and wants to get to know her but once he finds out she loves Phoebus his feelings slowly seem to drift more toward viewing her as his mother. She takes such a maternal role toward the end imo.
What I liked about it is that both Frollo and Quasimodo kinda "worship" Esmeralda. Frollo paints her like a witch/temptation, a creature of hell still he would succumb to her if she would welcome him; Quasi paints her as an angel/pureness a creature of the heavens and he feels blessed just to be in her thoughts (understandable giving his condition and isolation) It's a dichotomy that I always liked. Phoebus is the one who saw her for what she was.
I’m not calling anyone out here but in most of the reactions of this movie I’ve seen from men they don’t draw the same lustful perspective as female reactors just something I’ve noticed and thought was kinda odd since I think it’s rly obvious that he doesn’t love her
1:27 *giggles* yeah I think the steps are made of solid rock or something and it was a snowing so it was probably frozen over. So yeah a slip and a hard fall equal death.
14:26 it's even creepier knowing that the original Esmeralda is just a 14 years old girl😰 This is the creepiest and at the same time one of the most relatable to our world Disney movie I ever seen!
This move is an absolute MASTERPIECE and has one of the best villains to come out of Disney, not because he’s the most powerful, or the darkest, or the strongest, or the smartest, but he’s the most realistic and people like him actually exist in this dark world.
Me too, but I also remember thinking "why is this boring movie making my parents so uncomfortable?" because I could see the looks they were shooting each other and me the whole time it was on 😂 Now it's my favorite Disney of all time!
I don't know why we're having this fever that every reactor is watching The Hunchback of Notre Dame but i'm for sure not complaining! This movie deserves the hype, it's literally a masterpiece. Love this channel so much! 14:12 oh and by the way, he doesn't LOVE her, he LUSTS her! very important difference here :)
14:18 "As a kid, I can imagine that this is just an evil song." I was 14 when I saw this in the theater-and let me tell you, I definitely understood that Frollo was lusting over Esmeralda. The face you made when you saw her dancing in the fire was the face I made when he produced and caressed her scarf. To this day I still remember thinking, "Am I old enough to be watching this...?" It totally felt like an adult movie.
For your reaction to Quasimodo’s mother’s death. Her head slammed against the stone steps pretty hard. The force of her pulling on Quasi + Frollo kicked her is enough to crack her skull on impact
Frollo is for sure the most evil villain ever - it's quite telling that he's the most human as well. Always loved this film as a kid but my appreciation for the sheer quality of the dialogue, songs and animation have only grown since the 90s. The whole message "what makes a monster and what makes a man?" I mean...bottled brilliance ;)
One of the most beautifully animated films, and most incredible film scores, Disney has ever done. This film is a masterpiece and deals with some really dark stuff. Hellfire is an absolute masterpiece of music and animation.
If you enjoyed the music in this movie check out the soundtrack to the musical version of it. Also yes they did change the end of the story for this movie, the musical ends that Esmarelda does die, then 2 years later 2 skeletons are discovered in the crypts (one wearing a woven band, the other with a crooked spine), and when they try to separate the two, his remains turn to dust. Whereas the actual novel ends with Quasimodo searching for Esmarelda's body/remains, once again 2 skeletons found and his turned to dust when they tried to separate them ... if my memory serves me correctly still.
I went to see this movie alone as a teenager (I was 15). When Hellfire came up, I sat there stunned that Disney would ever put a song like that in their animated children's movie. It was such a risky choice but I think it has become one of the most iconic Disney songs.
This is definitely one of my favorite underrated movies! If you’re taking suggestions, please consider The Emperor’s New Groove, Anastasia, or Atlantis the Lost Empire
I love your reactions and this was one of my favorite movie as a kid. Super dark but it still is one of my favorite to this day. The music is just on point.
This was my all time favorite Disney movie when I was a child, even tho now I don’t understand how could my mum let me watch it. It’s 100% one of the darkest Disney movies and one of the more unique, Frollo as the main villain is just perfect (easily one of the best Disney villains, he is not some magical creature or uses magic, he is a normal crazy person with too much power and the scary thing is there are many powerful and insane people like him in the real world). But I must say if you like more dark movies you should watch “The Black Couldron” the real darkest Disney movie ever made, it’s little bit older but still a very interesting movie.
Quasi's mom died because Frollo kicked her hard enough for her skull to fracture on the stairs and you can see some of the blood gathering in the snow. Still it's good that she ran to Norte Dame because if she handed Quasi over Frollo would've drowned him in the river and no one would've stopped him.
If you enjoyed the music in this, I highly recommend checking out the live off broadway recording (starring Michael Arden) because it is POWERFUL. Especially listen to the opening and Made of Stone! Also, fun fact: originally Frollo was a priest and not a judge, but Disney didn't want to depict the church in a negative light so they changed it.
@@memyselfandi7782 I believe there is a recording here on youtube! If you search "hunchback of notre dame broadway musical" it should be the first result. There is also a great behind the scenes video of the cast recording that I watch a lot when I need uplifting.
Not merely a priest, Frollo was the Archdeacon in charge of Notre Dame, meaning he is the pillar of virtue to the other priests, monks, and the common folk. He by is position is meant to be the most Christlike, yet he is far from what he is meant to be. In some of the plays they make him a very believable man wrestling with his will to sin and his obligation as Archdeacon to remain a pillar of virtue. That is what ultimately makes him more terrifying than his Disney counterpart. Disney did put him in a post that is meant to be a pillar of virtue and justice by making him a judge, but made him very evil very quickly, for the children to know who is bad. People are very complicated, and the plays capture that in away the make one have to examine their own hart, and what they have tried to hide there, in vain, from the sight of God. One must ask themselves if they might be at risk of becoming as spiritually ill as Frollo, and try to hide under a shroud of self-righteousness.
This movie is just amazing and so dark. When I was younger I loved Lion King still do but this became my favourite Disney movie when I got older and understood it better. What makes the entire Frollo/Esmeralda thing more creepy is in the books she was 16 and he chose to 40 and in this movie she is 20 and he 56 (according to googel)!!
"This is so dark! Is this even a Disney Movie?!" Me: *Laughs in Black Cauldron* You should watch Black Cauldron dude. You ain't seen anything yet. Honestly one of my favorite films.
Since a kid, Guasi is one of my favorite Disney characters. He suffers so much and still is a kind person. This movie is what made me want to study medieval theater lol Ps- That scene at the festival always breaks my heart
In the book where Frollo starts off benevolent, he finds an abandoned deformed baby at the door of the church on a French holiday called Quasimodo Sunday. The word does essentially mean “half-formed”, but the film reinterpreted the reason that Frollo gave it as a name (effectively I might add).
Oooohhh-hohohoho, I'd been waiting for this one. YAS. Also have to point out, Frollo feels no love for Esmeralda. Lust, yes, tons of it, but no love. Or else he wouldn't want her dead if she refuses to be with him x)
I'm pretty sure Victor Hugo had Phoebus live in the book. In the book he was a complete asshole and a cad, and Hugo had him survive to get married, which he said "was a fate worse than death".
I think that this is EVERYONE'S WORST NIGHTMARE. A Crazy Man WITH *POWER* (by power I mean, political power or some other position of leadership, you ALL know what I mean)
One of my favorite Disney movies to be sure, and not just for the visuals, but for the music as well. Stay in Here/Out There and Heaven's Light/Hellfire are pairs of songs that are meant to play against each other and the use of the Latin choir elevates this film to a new level. The darker theme turned people away from this film, but I found it to be quite powerful.
5:39 "Everybody sings. Even when they're talking they're talk-singing" Yeah.....Welcome to the Victor Hugo Musical Adaptions Universe lol. I guess you haven't seen the adaption that Victor Hugo's other famous sad novel spawned. Don't get me wrong, I adore musical theatre and I do love Les Miserables as a musical; but I can admit that the sheer amount of sung dialogue in that is definitely an acquired taste lol.
A lot of the backlash against this movie was the PR department's completely misleading ad campaign. They showed the Feast of Fools, made it all look like some huge party with George from Seinfeld making occasional fart jokes (watch the Burger King commercial for a comparison). So, you'd be in the theater with your eight year old and in the first ten minutes of the movie a woman is murdered on the steps of the Cathedral and her stolen baby almost drown. Then Esmeralda...easily the most sexualized Disney character up to that point and arguably still the most sexualized when you ignore the purposefully sexual characters like Jessica Rabbit or The Bimbettes. Hell, some groups probably thought she'd asked for Frollo's abuse..."she showed her bare shoulders! What was Frollo supposed to do? NOT burn Paris to the ground?" I love the movie but when it released to was really panned.
Yeah. My mom and sisters admit that the movie is good, but still don't like it because it's marketed at children. I've tried pointing out that most small children would only hear another scary villain song listening to Hellfire and that this is *hardly* the first Disney animated film to feature death. Not to mention that we're *Catholic* and so spent our childhoods subjected to the annual Good Friday re-enactment of The Passion of Christ with *audience participation.* Then there are our Illustrated Children's Bible that includes such wonderful, lighthearted stories like The Great Flood and the Massacre of the Innocent. But, apparently, that's different. I'm still Catholic, by the way, and generally get along great with my family, but there are some distinct oddities in some of their thinking.
@@brigidtheirish I'm not Catholic but my dad was a vicar and I wasn't allowed to celebrate Halloween or read The Worst Witch. We were allowed to read my dad's books about arctic expeditions which contained photos of actual corpses, his book about the paranormal which showed demonic possessions, spontaneous human combustion, poltergeists, and The Prince of Egypt which contains literal child murder. It's no wonder I'm a goth.
@@KoshVader Not allowed to celebrate *Halloween?* One of *those* denominations, huh? *Yeesh.* If folks are going to freak out over a holiday because it has pagan roots, they better be freaking out over *all* of them. The 90s especially 90s Disney was not afraid to be dark.i always enjoyed that about old school disney. Disney now attempts it sometimes but not where this one does it. I always enjoyed this movie. Is it my favorite Disney film no. That would be beauty and the beast but this is definitely up on my top five.definitely. great characters... great songs... great message.
Spot on with the tone assessment - a film this dark would never get off the ground these days. Emotionally brutal from the first scene to last. Plays out almost like an opera...not that I've ever seen an opera; they look a bit shit. But this film was cool.
Frollo is my favorite Disney villain. In five minutes he arrested innocents, killed a mother and almost drowns a baby. He came, declares himself as a villain and isn't in this movie to play to the charming villain. About the statues. They all had a reaction to the actions of Frollo, the apostles were disgusted, the demos was enjoying the moment while the angels were angry, the child in the virgin's arms was scared of Frollo and the virgin was dissapointed in Frollo. As a detail, before the lightning the statue of the virgin had the eyes closed, like processing what vile act was made in her pressence, after the lightning the statue has the eyes open with a look of dissapointment in Frollo.
I too find Cloupin's voice enchanting, easliy my favorite character in this movie, reminds me alot of Sheogorath from Elder Scroll, I dare say they could even be related or the same person
the soundtrack is actually greater than it sounds at first. a theme which is *so* often used here is kyrie eleison which is ancient greek for "lord have mercy". like look at that scene of paris burning for frodo's lust with a chorus singing "lord have mercy" in the background. this movie is truly amazing
YESSSSS!!!! i love that you said that this was one of your favorite movies because its my favorite one. Its so amazing and the music is one of the most powerful and best disney soundtracks EVER
The brilliant thing about Frollo is that he really doesn't think he's the villain! He truly believes he's right! Those kinds of bad guys are the best apart from those where you can see yourself turning into them under the same circumstances
When Frollo is offering captured Gypsys silver for Esmeralda's location, he says he so much purer but his offering Silver Coins like Judas Iscariet flaunting his bounty, may as well keep it, he need to pay the ferryman something on the way down
Fun fact: Frollo's prayers in "Hellfire" are actually answered, and he is given a last chance to redeem himself.
Wow. Good interpretation.
Oh wow
Goodness, over 20 years and this film's symbolism still baffles me.
That’s good to know.
Another fun fact: Esmeralda is 16 and Frollo is like 50+ in the book. While in line with history, doesn't make it any less creepy.
It’s crazy how they made Frollo so evil that we’re actually rooting for Quasi to straight up murder him in cold blood.
But of course he couldn't, because he wasn't a monster and showed mercy. Then Frollo causes his own demise by refusing to show mercy in return. A very fitting end.
Yeah one of my favorite parts is how Quasi doesn’t let frollo fall even after all of this, cause he was a such a decent person
And it’s frollo’s malice and hatred that ends up destroying himself instead.
well Frollo is also an understandable man cuz he ain't just evil cuz 'evil'.
In the musical he does.

I'd like to point out that Frollo doesn't "love" Esmeralda: he lusts after her. He doesn't value her as a person or human being, he only desires her physically (hence the hair sniffing scene). Love is selfless while lust is selfish.
I still can't get over how ballsy it was to have a creep sniff a woman's hair in a kid's film

holy moly, they would take over the world
Dont forget Lady Tremane from Cinderella. One of first manipulations of Disney.
Frollo's got a bit of lustful streak in him, i can imagine Gothel seducing him and using him to fulfill her evil plans. They betray each other in the end.
I'd ship it 🤣
I actually saw on other people's reactions to this movie A lot of people making that association the toxic faux parents and how they could basically take over the Disney universe if they put their minds together I would have liked this comment but it was at 69 when I got to it I wasn't going to ruin it but when I clicked to actually leave this comment it's at 71 so now I will like it cuz I've been watching this for about 12 minutes and it has gotten like since then apparently
Quasimodo not getting Esmeralda and actually letting her go directly parallels Frollo's arc. While both of them wanted Esmeralda, Quasi loved her enough to let her go while Frollo viewed her as an object to posses and refused to let her go. Yet another way to show how Quasi is the man and that Frollo is the monster.
it’s really refreshing imo that quasimodo doesnt “win” esmeralda’s romantic love at the end. like. the fact that they don’t switch her affections on a whim makes all of them feel more like real, believable people. and they all end up having important bonds with each other even if quasi’s ones are just friendship. i just think that aspect of this movie is nice. a lesser movie would’ve had esmeralda go “oh! i love you now instead!” which. nah it doesn’t work like that
I completely agree, it’s so refreshing
It makes the most sense for her and Phoebus to end up together
Cause there’s 3 guys who have strong opinions on her:
Quasi sees her as an angel (“Heaven’s Light”)
Frollo sees her as a devil/temptress
Whereas Phoebus sees her as a person (one of his first comments being “what a woman!”)
So it makes the most sense for her to fall for the guy who sees her as a person, rather than someone who idolises or looks down on her
It reinforces that the story is not about Quasimodo's discovery of love, but of pride.
I always felt its cause he wasnt as handsome as him..
To answer your question about how the mother died: that many impacts along the spine and neck can kill.
not to mention that crack to the head. she could have easily sustained a closed head injury, which is very dangerous since the brain can swell to the point of death.
@@BoxOKittens I always assumed that the fall broke her neck but that makes sense too.
Both are viable explanations. I usually wrote it off as a cracked skull with Disney's patented lack of blood, but with how she fell, broken neck is a viable option. Stone stairs with sharp edges do not mix well with the gaps in your neck vertebrae.
Hitting your head _once_ can kill.
I thought she slammed her head on the stone step.
"I'd like to go to Notre Dame."
Alright, who's gonna tell him?
My thoughts exactly
Back when we thought 2019 was the shittiest year we could possibly face 😂
It's still being rebuilt afaik
I saw Notre Dame, the overall structure is fine actually
And I’m his final moments: Frollo learned that stone can talk.
_Holy shit_
Oh yes.
Goddammit!

Good call back!
JAAAAMMES BAXTEEERR!

@@pixy6007 he animated and voiced that character as well, I think that’s actually his TH-cam profile picture
14:12 correction. He "lusts" her not loves her 😬
He's truly a creepy villain probably the most evil of all Disney villains
That's a good clarification. Frollo is a very effective depiction of how awful misogynists are. What sucks most about Frollo is that dudes just like him exist in the real world.
What makes it so scary is that he's the most realistic villain. It's not some goofy evil villain that can't happen. The most horrifying thing is that he is an actual villain of this life and in our society.
@@wadehwallace Is he really a misogynist

@@Dancingqween3 no, flynn was bad at the beginning
Like, Max's a rotal guard and Flynn had just stolen the lost princess's crown.
Interesting fact, Tony Jay the voice actor for Frollo had trouble reaching and holding the final few notes of Hellfire
he was told he could work on it or if he was unable they could get someone else to voice over the song
Tony Jay was so excited to be working on a Disney film that he wanted to commit and so he took singing lessons to hep him so he could nail that part of the song.
RIP he was such a talented and committed performer and actor.
@aaustin365Judge Frollo is Better Disney's The Hunchback Of Notre Dame is the only Disney movie about Remembering Tony Jay As Judge Frollo
That is true. He could become a toy maker or something.
Frollo doesn't have a crush for anyone except himself. What he feels for Esmeralda is lust and obsession. He can't begin to understand what true love is.

Not necessarily. I always loved it. Even as a kiddo.
For me especifically, that's EXACTLY what happened!! 🤩💯♥️🥰👌👏
This film made me more sad than scared
And it's also one of those movies where you go: "Oh no..... OOOOH, NOOOOO...!" when you catch the really dark undertones of what Frollo's issues are. x,D
FROLLO: "And He shall smite the wicked, and plunge them into the fiery pit!"
Be careful what you wish for, Frollo...
Not only that but it allows Frollo’s malice and hatred to be his own destruction in the end
SPOILERS for the book
So, the book is even more dark and twisted than this is.
Dang. Disney really cleaned that up. Sort of.
I have to add that Phoebus in the book is also an awful character. He just used Esmeralda and didn't really love her, it was only a fancy.
Frollo has got to be the most horrifying realistic disney villian in my book.
In the french version, he's voiced by the same guy than Scar
@@a.g.demada5263 In the English version, he (Tony Jay) is the same actor who voiced the assylum keeper in Beauty and the Beast.

To be fair every song by quasi and frollo are duets,
Out there, heaven’s light/hellsfire each are sung by both quasi and frollo and each reveals the nature and character of each of them.
@@SessVlogs exactly, that's what I mean, gotta see to believe. One of the worst sequels on Disney. Downgrade on every single aspect. But is always a need to watch so you can appreciate the first one the most and make fun of it.
The thing is Frollo didn’t love or have a crush on Esmeralda, he was just lusting immensely for her and blaming it on her “witchcraft” (classic patriarchy) because he views himself as a pure and holy man who wouldn’t sin, the hooded figures in “hellfire” are saying “mea culpa, mea maxima culpa” which is a praying for when you ask for forgiveness of sin, it means in latin “through my fault, through my most grievous fault”, he refuses to accept that he’s corrupt and sinful and the hooded figures around him are his obsession with trying to justify it and being holy accusing him of sinning, his own lunacy and madness (that is seen again during his death scene when he sees the devil roaring at him as he falls to his death, bringing him to hell), his own madness was his downfall
Frollo is definitely one of my favorite villains
Hellfire plays right after Heaven’s Light to contrast the different effect Esmeralda had on Quasimodo and Frollo
Frollo looks tired the next day because it’s implied that he spent the last night... Well... Having some impure thoughts
I also love Esmeralda’s God Help the Outcasts because she “isn’t supposed to be praying because she’s a gipsy” but she’s the most selfless of all the people praying there, while all the Christians at the church are praying for material and personal gain, all she asks for is help to all of the people who are also oppressed and doing even worse than her
She is shown walking in the opposite direction of the other praying people to simbolize that contrast
Also, the parts that make me cry the most are :
“Yes I know I'm just an outcast
I shouldn't speak to you
Still I see your face and wonder
Were you once an outcast too?”
(Esmeralda, you have no idea...)
“God help the outcasts
Or nobody will”
And also :
“I thought we all were the Children of God”
Esmeralda is incredible and should honestly be a Disney Princess because she’s an amazing model for young girls
Who says all the christians were praying for personal gain

Like what you said, Frollo Does *NOT* take Rejection Well, while Quasimodo *DID* take Rejection Well.

Omg I never noticed Belle!!
If you really look, the Magic Carpet from Aladdin is in the same scene as Belle. Also, Pumba is being cartet off by a couple of hunters.
Frollo paints her like a witch/temptation, a creature of hell still he would succumb to her if she would welcome him; Quasi paints her as an angel/pureness a creature of the heavens and he feels blessed just to be in her thoughts (understandable giving his condition and isolation)
It's a dichotomy that I always liked.
Phoebus is the one who saw her for what she was.
@@marti9734 yeah. And unlike Frollo, Quasimodo was willing to let her go so she could be happy.

“Are all statues alive or are they just his imagination”
That is the question
If you enjoyed the music in this movie check out the soundtrack to the musical version of it. Also yes they did change the end of the story for this movie, the musical ends that Esmarelda does die, then 2 years later 2 skeletons are discovered in the crypts (one wearing a woven band, the other with a crooked spine), and when they try to separate the two, his remains turn to dust. Whereas the actual novel ends with Quasimodo searching for Esmarelda's body/remains, once again 2 skeletons found and his turned to dust when they tried to separate them ... if my memory serves me correctly still.
The musical version is 👌
If you want great covers of Bells of Notre Dame and Hellfire, look up Jonathan Young. You’ll be amazed.
I went to see this movie alone as a teenager (I was 15). When Hellfire came up, I sat there stunned that Disney would ever put a song like that in their animated children's movie. It was such a risky choice but I think it has become one of the most iconic Disney songs.

Can confirm.

Since a kid, Guasi is one of my favorite Disney characters. He suffers so much and still is a kind person. This movie is what made me want to study medieval theater lol
Ps- That scene at the festival always breaks my heart
In the book where Frollo starts off benevolent, he finds an abandoned deformed baby at the door of the church on a French holiday called Quasimodo Sunday. The word does essentially mean “half-formed”, but the film reinterpreted the reason that Frollo gave it as a name (effectively I might add).
Actually Frollo saved Quasimodo from a nun who wanted to burn him alive.
Oooohhh-hohohoho, I'd been waiting for this one. YAS.
Also have to point out, Frollo feels no love for Esmeralda. Lust, yes, tons of it, but no love. Or else he wouldn't want her dead if she refuses to be with him x)
In the book, everyone dies.
Phoebus gets killed by Frollo, Esmeralda actually burns, Quasimodo kills Frollo and then commits suicide.
So yeah. Disney.
I'm pretty sure Victor Hugo had Phoebus live in the book. In the book he was a complete asshole and a cad, and Hugo had him survive to get married, which he said "was a fate worse than death".
Esmerelda “Justice!”
Scots “FUCK YEAH!”
NOT burn Paris to the ground?"
I love the movie but when it released to was really panned.
Totally don't blame you for going goth. Honestly, I rather like the aesthetic. (And my youngest sister has experimented with the style a bit because dark clothing is one of the few ways she manages to not look like a ghost.)
@@brigidtheirish the other thing is it wasn't actually that restricted with the exception of Halloween and the Worst Witch (although I was allowed to read Harry Potter for some reason).
I'm pagan but I haven't told my dad yet.
@@KoshVader *Weird* hangup, banning Halloween and that *one* book but not Harry Potter. That's been a *huge* target for the brittlely self-righteous since it came out.
Frollo does not love Esmerelda. That's not love, that's lust and obsession.
Man, 90’s Disney was just on a whole different level…..I miss that Disney so damned much.
I STILL love the Gargoyles show, over two decades later!

13:34 This song is one of the biggest musical moments in disney history and as the biggest disney villain song.
The animation, the songs, everything in this film is marvellous.
Spot on with the tone assessment - a film this dark would never get off the ground these days. Emotionally brutal from the first scene to last. Plays out almost like an opera...not that I've ever seen an opera; they look a bit shit. But this film was cool.
6:19,
Wow, I never realized how handsome phebious’s horse is.
He has lovely markings on his legs.
‘Quasi modo’ is Italian for ‘almost way’ or ‘half way’. It also is known as ‘Quasimodo Sunday’, which refers to the Sunday after Easter :)
5:59 I'VE NEVER NOTICE THEY PUT BELL INTO THIS MOVIE. IM SHOOK
This movie gives a strong representation of psychological abuse.
Just remember there are tons of children that have a Frollo as a parent/ guardian
the soundtrack is actually greater than it sounds at first. a theme which is *so* often used here is kyrie eleison which is ancient greek for "lord have mercy". like look at that scene of paris burning for frodo's lust with a chorus singing "lord have mercy" in the background. this movie is truly amazing
2:45 - except that dictionary doesn't know that Victor Hugo never wrote a book called "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" - he wrote "Notre Dame de Paris".
Welchy: I'd love to go to Notre Dame.
Me: Uuuuum...... Who.... Who's gonna tell him?
Welchy- I understand how he feels, if he can’t have her he’ll kill her! 😃
Me- 😀… what….
YESSSSS!!!! i love that you said that this was one of your favorite movies because its my favorite one.
Happy Father's day to all the fathers out there!
.... except for FROLLO.
1:20 Frollo: A monster 👿
Me: Are you sure that isn’t a mirror wrapped in a blanket?
“Have you seen yourself you not that good looking either pal” 😂😂😂. Omg I laughed so hard!!!
Nice catch at seeing Belle in "Out There." Did you see Pumbaa and the Magic Carpet in that same shot as well, by chance?
Can confirm
When Frollo is offering captured Gypsys silver for Esmeralda's location, he says he so much purer but his offering Silver Coins like Judas Iscariet flaunting his bounty, may as well keep it, he need to pay the ferryman something on the way down
Yeah you can cosplay as Phoebus if you grew out your hair. I think you may pull it off.
