Frollo is one of those Disney Villains who gets even more terrifying the older you get. Much like Ursula, he doesn't have a sympathetic backstory, he's simply evil.
That's what makes him the best Disney villain. He's realistic. Especially for those of us who actually have encountered people like him. Also Hi Rukiya!! Didn't expect to see you here!
Exactly. I know scar may be one of the top favorite disney villains, but for me it has to be frollo. Like i give disney back then a lot of respect for creating a villain like frollo. He is like the representation AND combination of all the different kinds of evil that exist in real life. Like my gosh, i miss the times when disney had a lot of guts to be risky and dark.
I think the main difference of Disney music before vs now is that its no longer like a musical and more like separate pop song music videos. It feels like they just want to make something sound catchy rather than strengthen the story and connect it to the character🙃
@@tobsonasanya4765 yes of course you can but Disney doesn't seem to put in that much effort. With Disney trying to push out everything as fast as they can they're not giving the artist enough time to come out with something better. They end up having maybe 1 or 2 songs that carry the movie while the others try to shoehorn in a message in a song that usually doesn't match the rest. And they have been doing this (for example the song "A Guy Like You" in the Hunchback) but now they do it even more in an effort to catch a younger audience as a failsafe rather than make something everyone can appreciate.
I liked that Quasimodo doesn't get Esmeralda in the end, but accepts that she loves Phoebus, and they all remain friendly in the end. Also, Hellfire is still in my opinion one of the creepiest Disney villain songs in terms of genuinely making me feel frightened of a character. Seriously, Frollo is probably the most evil Disney villain ever. Tony Jay did an excellent job voicing him. RIP.
The thing is, among the three men, to Frollo, she was an object, to Quasimodo, she was a goddess/idea (in large part because she was the only woman who ever talked to him/showed him interest), but to Phoebus, she was just a woman, an equal person, which is what she needed most.
I think this is the darkest Disney movie because there’s no magic it’s very real. If this was made as a typical Disney movie the hunch back would have a fairy 🧚♀️ god mother that fixes everything, makes him the most handsome in the land and he gets Esmeralda at the end
You're right. I think if it hadn't been for the gargoyles Disney might not have let this one out. if you remove them from the film, there's almost no levity.
@@Kellyeeeee They made a musical version of this movie and there, the Gargoyles are 'replaced' by all the statues of Notre Dame who work as a greek chorus. In my opinion I kind of wish they had let it been ambiguos if the gargoyles were alive or not, since I can _absolutely_ see Quasi making them up because he has no one to friggin talk to. The end of the "A guy like you" scene even suggests this, showing that the real objects are much less impressive than the fantastic world of Quasimodos imagination, but the fact that they have tangible effects on the battle at the end leads you to the conclusion that they actually _are_ real, which I wish they weren't, just Quasis way of coping with the pure loneliness Also in the musical they reiintroduced the bookoriginal plotpoint that Quasimodo is nearly deaf from the bells. Whenever he speaks it is with a lisp and he speaks very little, but when he sings, they make it out to be his _inner_ voice, his true thoughts and thus he sing beautifully, because that is what his soul is.
Frollo was such a terrifying villain because he's obsessed with whats right and wrong and he blames Esmerelda for his own desire and its like girl all the woman did was exist, fight your own demons and stop attacking people.
The other thing about him is that there are many moments where he is given a chance to let it go and or self reflect But he chooses his obsession and purity each time until it drives him mad and eventually destroys himself.
i’m glad she ended up with phoebus, cause frollo saw her as a demon, quazimodo saw her as an angel, and phoebus saw her as a person. she was either demonized or too glorified, and phoebus just saw esmeralda for the woman she is. and quazimodo did technically get what he wanted in the end, which was to just be accepted
The part that really blows me away is that the writers understood that two and half decades ago. It’s a surprisingly level of emotional intelligence/mental health awareness for the time period.
@@solblackguy Fr. In the novel, Phoebus was way worse than Frollo, ironically. I mean Esmeralda also was french. The movie just needed someone pretty to end up with her, they couldn't just pair Quasimodo with anyone
When I tell you this movie changed my LIFE as a kid.... My parents were in a very conservative church at the time I saw it and I remember the Frollos of my congregation so well. This movie comforted me so much because I was finally able to see that my fear for those men was valid, after being told for so long that even QUESTIONING them was the sign of a wicked heart that would condemn me to hell for eternity. I was fortunate that my parents left the church after a massive CSA coverup happened and they realized I wasn't safe around those people. Luckily they still "selfishly" loved their own children more than whatever twisted image of God that church worshiped.
Frollo is the quintessential right-wing bigot, and I find it encouraging to know that kids are generally astute enough to recognize him as such. From the lack of conservative outcry against the Hunchback of Notre Dame specifically, though, it seems like their parents generally are not. Maybe conservatives need to be called out more often about "speak(ing) of justice, yet (being) cruel to those most in need of help."
Being Christian myself, I can relate to your comment because I've seen the Frollos of the church and the damage they do to communities while claiming to act in God's name. Even Jesus warns that those hypocrites will be judged more harshly by the Father for the acts of evil they claim to do in his name. Frollo's end is divine justice in a way: neither Quasimodo or Esmerelda take Frollo out. Frollo dies to his own hubris. He falls to his death into the fiery crowd - which is symbolic of him falling into his own damnation/Hell for his sins.
I was a kid when this came out. im disabled and this was the first disabled character i remember seeing in a show of disney up to then. i went in thinking it would be uplifting as the trailer let out all the dark shit and i was honest to god blown away and it changed my love of music. it got me into classical and operatic type music at a very young age and it also started my questionings on the church. it changed my life i am not even joking
The late Tony Jay did indeed have an excellent voice. I believe I recall reading somewhere that he took extra singing classes so he could extend the note on the final word "burn" in "Hellfire" for as long as he did. And yes, Frollo is unusual as Disney villains go because he's driven by an unpleasant mixture of racial prejudice, religious fanaticism and political corruption- as well, ultimately, as sexual frustration- but this of course makes him only too "real" compared to most. "Hellfire", by the way, in addition to being an obvious foil to Quasimodo's song "Heaven's Light" after thinking about the same woman, is also contrasted by the priests' Confiteor prayer in Latin that you hear at the beginning of Frollo's song and then in the background throughout. Most significantly, when Frollo says, "It's not my fault! I'm not to blame" they answer this and his justification for it by repeating "Mea culpa" and "Mea maxima culpa" ("My fault"/"My maximum fault"): the things he *should* be saying, versus what he actually *is* saying.
Yeah people tend to miss that "out there" and "Heavens Light/Hellfire" are duets That shows the character and motivations of the two main characters Frollo and Quasimodo, Whether it be the dark cynical and immoral purity of Frollo Or the hopeful and inquisitive nature of Quasimodo...
It's still creepy no matter what age she is because Frollo clearly has a sick twisted lust for her which no teenage girls or women should have to deal with but unfortunately a lot of creepy men do this. 🙄
I remember reading a book version (I don't remember which one because there's quite a few adaptations) and there was a scene where he tortured Esmeralda, then climbed on top of her and started kissing her x.x yuck!!!
Lady Tremaine fits in with realistic dark Disney villains. She had zero magic, but she emotionally and financially abused Cinderella for years, and felt zero remorse for it. Her spoiled brat daughters were almost just as toxic.
I think Gaston is up there too because it represents a primitive way of thinking as well as holding the charisma to rally a mob through fear. He's just a really good-looking competent hunter.
@@anzelle_taylors_version At one point, she was part of the Disney princess lineup from roughly 1996-1998. But they took her out eventually. She is one of my favorite Disney characters.
If you liked this soundtrack, you are going to lose it for the prince of Egypt soundtrack. Best animated soundtrack of all time in my opinion. 🙂 Super excited for you to react to all of the movies though.
The Crowdscene at the festival is one of the scariest things I can imagine. A Crowd, already whipped up and frenzied, probably lots of drink has been flowing. And it changes _so quick_ One Minute everyone is having fun, the next, the crowd turns real ugly and the mood drops. It is scary because this can happen .
I love this move! Thank you for reacting to it even if it didn’t win the poll. “God Help the Outcasts” is one of my favorite Disney songs, it’s so beautiful. Frollo is really the worst Disney villain, mostly b/c he’s so real. His song is truly disgusting. The Romani (“g____) community is a displaced people. There’s a long history of prejudice & oppression against them.
This is definitely Disney's most underrated (and darkest) film and its soundtrack is absolutely FANTASTIC (they have the backing choir's parts all sung in Latin). It was difficult to pick between this and _The Prince of Egypt_ but I chose this film because I feel that not many reactors have covered it. I think you'll enjoy _The Prince of Egypt_ and it has a great cast as well as a phenomenal score/soundtrack by Hans Zimmer himself. Great reaction Chu! 💜💜💜
I feel the same way it's one of my favorite songs and the fact that she asked for nothing it's incredible that everybody's asking for something, and she just wants help for her people.
Fun fact about the gargoyles: The two male gargoyles Hugo and Victor are actually named after the writer of the Hunchback of Notre Dame Victor Hugo. While Laverne is named after an old Disney singer from a sister group called the Andrew sisters, Laverne Sophie Andrew who died in 1967.
17:11 yes you’re so right. The old Disney songs were so orchestral, so theatrical. I miss them, they were not afraid to be melancholic or approach difficult topics
As a kid i never liked this movie and always thought it was boring but as ive gotten older, it's become one of my favorite disney movies of all time! It's wild how relevant the story remains today, the lighting/cinematography/animation is some of Disney's best work, and the music goes so hard!! Plus this is one of very few films done by a major studio that seems to highlight the persecution and oppression of the Romani (G*psy) people rather than villianizing them!
In my opinion, Frollo is one of the scariest Disney villains, if not THE scariest and it's because his motivations and the excuses he gives himself are so incredibly human. He only stops himself from killing Quasi because he fears his soul will end up in hell because I suppose unaliving an infant in front of a cathedral is a step too far. He emotionally and mentally abuses Quasi, infantilizing him, isolating him, belittling him-- all so that he can maintain control of Quasi. He sees the Romani people as sub-human and uses his position of power and his religion to justify hurting them. He's a villain who is so deep into his religion that he thinks he's doing what's 'right.' When he finds himself lusting after Esmeralda, instead of introspection and finding a way to inwardly deal with the feelings he gets from her, he decides it's HER fault for being a 'wicked temptress' and that he deserves to have her and that he wants to 'save' her or she'll burn. It's especially scary right now because we see people with similar ideas and motivations to Frollo aiming their targets at the LGBTQ+ communities and the black community. They use hate and their beliefs to justify causing harm to these communities. Frollo is a realistic villain and that's what makes him terrifying. He has no magic powers, only righteous indignation and a position of power which he uses to subjugate those he deems 'evil'
I love everything about it this film touches on such real life themes. Esp with Frollo/Esmeralda and how it’s not her fault that she is attractive & talented and him lusting after her & wishing her harm if she rejects him is entirely on him. But it’s creepy bc of how there are so many men in the real world who do despise & wish harm on women who aren’t attracted to them.
When I was in elementary school I had a sleepover at a friend's place, it was just the two of us, and she wanted to see this movie. I grew up watching Disney, but hadn't seen this one yet so I was excited. As soon as the song with the choir started I knew it wasn't like the others I had seen. I was scared throughout the whole movie and then we went to bed and she wanted to fall asleep listening to the soundtrack. I overreacted and started crying so my parents had to pick me up 😂 till this day the intro songs gives me goosebumps
So 11 Fun Facts about the original story (SPOILERS): 1. Quasimodo is deaf bc of the bells. 2. "Quasimodo" means "half-made" or "misshapen". 3. Frollo is a priest of the Notre Dame, not this authoritarian who could command the city/King's archers and "police" force. And he has a brother whom he hoped to make a scholar but who is uninterested and rather drink, gamble, etc instead of go to school; Frollo wanted to teach Quasimodo how to read & write, thinking he'd mold a "creature" into a "true", "civilized" man. But he can't do either of these so he sees Quasimodo as a symbol of his own failures and uses him as a tool to enforce his frustrations on the world. 4. Phoebus is a creep like Frollo, but in the mundane "she's an exotic, sexy foreigner and I'm awesome" sort of way. He really goes a distance into hiding from Esmeralda that he's this way so he can essentially get into her pants & he has a lot of female admirers. Think Gaston from Beauty and the Beast but an officer of the law. 5. Esmeralda is accused of trying to kill him but it was actually Frollo. Phoebus doesn't say anything when Esmeralda is accused & instead chooses to marry one of his side-girls Fleur-de-Lys de Gondelaurier. A rich girl who was racist & classist to Esmeralda in making fun of her clothes. 6. Esmeralda was 16. 7. Esmeralda, though kinder than others and forming a friendship with Quasi, is still not very gracious towards Quasimodo b/c she is 16 and... 8. Esmeralda has a huge crush on Phoebus (thinks he's pretty and brave and strong) and he becomes nearly the center of her thoughts, esp after she's accused (with sorcery, too) and she tries to tell people that some "sorceress" tried to kill Phoebus but she's tortured and confesses. 9. Esmeralda's mother is revealed to be Sister Gudule, who is this nonRomani (or as the slur/the movie says, "Gypsy") woman who segregated herself from the public after losing baby Esmeralda to kidnapping. Whoever kidnapped Esmeralda also replaced her with an "ugly" baby (Esmeralda was a pretty baby, too, enough to supposedly make her mother very happy). All this time, she believed a Romani group kidnapped her kid, so she hated Romani (aside from just being racist) and the sound of kids laughing and playing. After Sister Gudule finds out Esmeralda is her long-lost daughter, she tries to save her but... 10. Esmeralda is hung in public and dies. Quasimodo kills Frollo and disappears... 11. Years later, Quasimodo's corpse is found wrapped around Esmeralda's bones, hugging her. *BONUS* Esmeralda's beloved goat, Djali, can do tricks and "spell" words with his hoofs; at her trial, he does this trick and it further makes her look guiltier to the spectators (despite them previously loving this trick when she was just up and about collecting their money and while they were charmed with her looks, dancing, and magic tricks). Yeah, racism and hypocrisy are big themes in this story. Basically, Esmeralda, though everyone acknowledges she is gorgeous, dies bc of racism, male perversion, and envy. Quasimodo dies of neglect, abuse, and loneliness. Frollo dies from his own need to control others and the corruption that eats his rationality and makes him go by his basest desires.
That one about kidnapping is a typical old stereotype. People in Europe believed it even there was never a proven case of something similar. Just some decades ago mothers still warned their kids to not go where the Gypsies live or otherwise they will be stolen.
@@Awatchamacallit Yes, they were. Well, not "at birth" so much as many months into their infancy and it was obvious that they were different babies bc Esmeralda was very pretty even as a baby and Quasimodo still had his looks then. If we take Sister Gudule's word that Romani kidnapped Esmeralda, then Quasimodo, who they left behind, was of Romani descent.
The way your jaw dropped and your eyes popped out your head when you saw Esmeralda 😂😂 She a baddy fasho. She isnt an official Disney Princess but she definitely the finest of them all. THIS IS MY FAVORITE DISNEY MOVIE! Im so glad there is a new reaction to it. Ive been waiting. Thank you! I am so happy you enjoyed it as much as I do every single time I watch it.
literally screamed when I saw this on my notifications! This is top 3 classic Disney, alongside Hercules and Pocahontas, beautiful animations, amazing songs and a great message. I love the flip of the phrase in the first song "who is the monster and who is the man" and in the last song its "what makes a monster and what makes a man" because Quasi is that guy and Frollo is a demon directly from hell.
26:19 - Yep! The Paris Catacombs! They’re real. In the late 1700’s, Paris was worried their overcrowded cemeteries could cause disease, so there was a mass effort to move the bodies underground. Especially when a neighboring basement wall collapsed from the weight of all the bodies in the mass graves for the poor in the Les Innocents cemetery. Some portions of the catacombs are designed in a really beautiful way, with all the bones arranged in patterns like the building blocks of architecture. But it was also kind of a rush job, so eventually the bones and bodies were just placed wherever there was space, so the deeper in you go, it’s not as organized. It actually went forgotten for about a century until the 1800s, when people started using it for private events & concerts. Now it’s a tourist destination, but only certain sections deemed safe for visits.
The older Disney movies feel like real musical theatre while a lot of the modern ones don’t have the same feel anymore. You really can’t beat a movie like this. Films like this one feel like musicals first and animated movies second. You could take any part of this and adapt it to the stage. I don’t think you could say the same for a lot of modern Disney musicals. They feel like movies first and musicals second.
this movie really is the it girl of old disney. the story, the characters, the music, and the animation style. just so perfect. iconic movie about real life issues
Thank you thank you thank you for reacting to this! I was worried cause we knew this wasn’t gonna win the poll but it is required viewing!!!! Probably THE best Disney villain of all time. He is terrifying
The original novel is a tragedy, and I think Esmerelda was a very young teen (and she was being pursued by a priest). But this is an instance in which I can appreciate the Disneyfication of it. Live action versions I've seen have made her be an adult woman as well, which I also prefer (especially knowing how things went down IRL).
Yes... this movie is in my top Disney films of all time along with... the Lion King, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Hercules, Encanto and The Little Mermaid.
I saw this movie in theaters twice when I was thirteen. I got a huge crush on Quasimodo and became a Tom Hulce fan for life! That singing voice (and talking voice) pulls at my heartstrings even now. I also love Clopin's singing voice. That high note....wow!
The hunchback of Notre Dame has always been one of my favorites growing up, and for Two reasons: Quasimodo and his beautiful kind, heart and soul… And most of all Esmeralda’s pure heart and her strong spirit. There are two top Disney hero ones that are my absolute favorite and it’s Esmeralda and Belle from Beauty & the Beast. But when it comes to the hunchback of Notre Dame, I just love everything about Esmeralda. I love her design. I love her spirit the way she stood up Quasimodo when he was being humiliated by the people and how she Refuse to back down from Frollo’s Cruelty and his disturbing desire for her. What I love about Esmeralda is how the Disney animators designed her appearance specifically her eyes I just love her eyes.
I recommend everyone watch the stage musical of the Hunchback of Notre Dame from La Jolla/ Papermill Playhouse. There is a full version on TH-cam, and it stars Broadway’s Michael Arden as Quasimodo and Patrick Page as Frollo. Even if you aren’t into musicals, it is a masterpiece. It’s often performed off Broadway but holding out hope that it will make its way to the big stage soon- it’s a hauntingly beautiful show that makes you think. Obviously a lot darker than Disney but is more true to the original novel. There is also a revival with actor Joshua Castille as Quasimodo. He is a deaf actor, and portrays him and uses ASL while another actor is the “voice”. He is deaf in the original novel, and it adds a whole new level for interpretation.
Frollo represents all the “Christians”that know Gods word, but don’t live it.Are quick to judge BEFORE looking at themslf. It’s spreading biblical teaching but not living by example. Partaking in an act of cruelty and injustice in the name of “God” but they very thing they’re doing goes against Christ’s teachings. It’s hypocritical and self righteous. Frollo was given a chance( the scene after the song ended where he was asking God what to do and the priest came in stopping the music as a bright light shined in the hallway telling Frollo of Esmerelda’s escape. As if that was God’s answer to Frollo question) but he still chose to go after Esmerelda. Thus his fatal end falling in fire. How poetic.
Singing Hellfire took a LOT out of Tony Jay. Poor guy was absolutely exhausted. He performed that song so amazingly that I asked my mom to rewind the tape so I can hear it again when I first watched this so so long ago. It absolutely blew me away.
ashman and menken, who originated the early disney movie music 'formula' were so good that when ashman was dying from AIDS, disney moved the production of the little mermaid to be near ashman so he can continue working on it. alan menken composed the music for this movie too they're incredible and iconic
Chu once again choosing chaos! Just know whatever poll wins means hes not touching it 😭 Choosing the movie with the least amount of votes is the new winner.
Its good to see there are still people who appreciate "old" Disney.......i miss these nuanced Cartoons that taught things..things every person could relate to...like being good to each other even when different....while entertaining you....
Can I just say with every reaction video of yours I see the more I believe we are soulmates! 😆 I LOVE how much you love Esmeralda! She's quite possibly my favorite Disney female character of all time. And yes, the music was BOMB. Hellfire and God Help The Outcasts are amongst the GREATEST Disney songs of all time in my opinion! Can't wait to see you react to The Prince of Egypt because THAT is also pure CINEMA! ❤❤❤❤
I literally!!!... have been singing 'God Help The Outcast' for all my life. Since I was 9 and had to take care of my brothers. I Still to this day sing it watching all the chaos going on today.
I love The Hunchback of Notre Dame! The soundtrack hits every time. Frollo is one of, if not the creepiest Disney villain ever. I just watched The Prince of Egypt because of your poll and its so good! Love your reactions!
That movie scared me as a kid. As you said, Frollo is terrifying because there are people like him in real life. Speaking of which, have you seen Voiceplay's cover of Hellfire? If not, I'd love to see your reaction to it!
I tell you! 90's Disney was in their element!!! I'm so sad and heartbroken at how far they've fallen today :( we need meaningful stories like these, especially now. #FIREBOBIGER
This is absolutely the most adult Disney animated film. A man literally sings about how he needs to murder a woman to stop himself from r*ping her, because she's a race he "shouldn't want"! This film has overt racism, sexual harassment, discrimination against the disabled, etc. It's a lot different than the book. The artistry is so amazing. I miss 2D animation. The 2D animators unionized not too long after this film. Studios couldn't abuse those employees legally anymore, so the studios transitioned into computer-generated animation, because they could exploit THOSE artists.
This is one of my favorite Disney films, and I really like that they kept with the themes from the original story while also giving Esmeralda more of a voice. The 1920’s silent film is also a masterpiece because it was one of the first films to use special effects makeup and lighting techniques that became industry standards.
Hunchback is still one of my top favorite Disney films ever. I don't know what possessed them to try to adapt this, but I'm glad they did. Personal head canon, the gargoyles are psychotic projections born out of years of isolation and abuse.
I'm glad you chose to watch and experience the beauty of the movie...one of the BEST things to ever come out of Disney...full of character and soul and the message is messaging and lives strong even to this day!!!
This was my favourite Disney movie growing up. Though I was far from old enough to understand what was going on half the time, I knew that this movie was great. today, "Out There" is a song I love to BELT OUT, and today, I say it is the most criminally underrated movie in Disney's lineup. SCREW SNOW WHITE! THIS SHOULD BE DISNEY'S NEXT LIVE-ACTION REMAKE!
Crazy-good reaction to a crazy-good movie! Easily one of Disney’s darkest, they really were a brave company in the 90’s. Also has one of the most compelling scores/soundtracks. Thank you for reacting to this! 💕
Has anyone dropped the fact that Quasimodo's voice actor, Tom Hulce, is 🌈?? Bc that makes me so happy given this role is about defying the more archaic and toxic traditions of the church. He hadn't openly come out when this was made, so it must have been so meaningful and heartfelt singing those songs about wishing to be part of a world that you've been taught hates you. I HAVE A LOT OF EMOTIONS ABOUT THIS FILM OKAY
I love so many things about this movie, for his example, the fact that Quasi saves Esmeralda, with the law of sanctuary when his mother could not be saved! or that at the end Frollo is quoting the Bible, saying that God shall smite the wicked and plunge them in the fiery pit. But he’s the one that got punished at this moment because he’s the only wicked person. He literally falls into the lava, which is the fiery pit lmao, it’s neither Esmeralda or Phoebus or quasi who kills him. It’s God Himself and the cathedral, that punishes him when he thought she was such a model of virtue!
I do have to say, I like both Coco and Prince of Egypt, but Prince of Egypt was a MASTERPIECE, especially for it’s time. Though you can’t go wrong with either, I know your reaction is going to slay regardless
It's hard to loathe someone upon first meeting them quite as much as Frollo. Imagine some crazy bastard murdering you, kidnapping your child, and then telling them you abandoned them and calling you heartless.
Amazing reaction ❤ hellfire is an insane song to have in a kids movie, but it is so good! Prince of Egypt was one of my faves as a kid, as well as Atlantis, Treasure Planet and Anastasia
I can already tell THIS will be one of your reactions I continuously come back to as a comfort watch. Loved everything about this and sooo glad you enjoyed this. You are going to fall in love with the “prince of Egypt” though lol the music in that, the story….. ughh it’s just perfection!
The term is actually Romani :) Romanian ppl are those from Romania, a European country-whereas Romani or Roma people are Esmerelda’s ethnic group and they originally come from northern India 🇮🇳
Esmerelda is my favorite Disney princess; what a wonderful, exemplary soul. And I have never been able to get through her song without crying. And, as you said, the animation is unforgettable. I love the "Sanctuary!!" moment. But a "children's movie"? I will never be old enough to watch it. 😱🥺 (Loved how you edited in that clip of Brenda at 31:30! That's one of the funniest scenes I've ever seen.)😂😂
0:13 omg! I was so sad after I voted in this poll. I did vote for Hunchback of Notre Dame and when I saw the results, HoND was in last place with 12% of votes😟 I loved all the options but I voted for this film because I thought you would enjoy the thematic elements and side characters, immensely. Also, Prince of Egypt and Coco have beautiful scores. The HoND has an amazing score, too, that isn’t appreciated until you see the film. So I am SOOOOOOO freakin excited to watch this reaction ❤ Thanks for taking time to watch it and post your reaction! Sending you love and joy to ride out the rest of the year and into 2024🫶🤜🤛
Older Disney songs are more directly and explicitly musical theater inspired. Newer Disney often tends to lean more in the direction of catchy pop tune. LMM is kinda a mix of both, with being a prolific broadway musical writer and performer, who also takes inspiration from hip hop. So the songs on things like Moana and Enchanto don’t suffer as much from feeling like they were produced in a factory. But imo they still just don’t hit quite as much. Plus, LMM’s gimmick of classical broadway with a mixture of hip hop and rap influences can only be fresh and subversive for so long. It’s starting to get a tad stale now that Disney has found itself in a rut, where all they want to do is make the same movie over and over again.
Interesting how in the original novel, Frollo is the archdeacon instead of a judge. I wonder if Disney would've stuck to keeping the archdeacon as the villain if this movie had been made recently...probably not, because a scandal in the church? Who would've thought?🥴Although I honestly think the other Disney villain who can give Frollo a run for his money is Sikes from Oliver and Company. If you haven't seen that one and you love animals, buckle up because it's one of my favs!
I remember that we borrowed this VHS from a cousin when I was little. The perception of time is different for kids, so it might have been shorter, but I'm almost certain we kept that tape for months. We wore this movie OUT! And the soundtrack cleans its plate! Mad underrated, and 'Hellfire' is my favorite Disney villain song, maybe my favorite Disney song, period. It's in the top 3 Disney songs, imo. It's this, 'Be Prepared,' and 'Poor Unfortunate Souls.' Disney/Pixar movies are cute and all, but nothing is eating like these animations. Given what they can do with animation now, I wouldn't be mad at a return to it.
Frollo might be evil but Hellfire is one of my favorite Disney songs 👌🏻❤️ And you're right, what makes him so scary is because there's men like that irl. Him and Gaston from Beauty And The Beast.
My hand FLEW to your channel the second I saw this drop. I'm so glad you loved it, Hunchback is one of my favorite films and I don't think we'll ever see another film quite like it.
Love your réaction ❤ Ps: you can cry all you want it what’s make you even more special because you show your true feelings and that’s priceless and special ❤
Esmeralda is drop dead gorgeous. Oml i dont think disney has ever made a more beautiful woman since her. Man ever single song in this movie HITS! Claude Frollo is #1 creepiest disney villain! He's scarier than any of the magic/super powered villains. Also omg watch the Prince of Egypt. It is AMAZING! opening song is gonna give you goosebumps! Absolutely beautiful!
If you haven’t watched it yet (I’m about to go check your page 😂), PRINCE OF EGYPT. Omg. Still one of the best movies ever made, not just in animation. The music is phenomenal. That movie INNOVATED so many things in animation, as well. The Parting of the Red Sea scene took TWO YEARS just to animate the water. They invented a new way to animate water that has been used ever since, & helped finally break the animation “code” for animating realistic water. It is the movie that BUILT Dreamworks. We wouldn’t have any of the movies from that studio that followed without it!
Yesss! 2-D animation is so incredible. I grew up with it and miss it dearly. It needs to make a comeback. This movie is SO dark yet so beautiful (and not nearly as dark as the book!) Alan Menkin did incredible writing all the music. It's a powerful soundtrack that really sets the tone of the movie.
Disney used to have some balls back then, to make a "kid"s movie based on a Victor Hugo's book ( He never held back on showing all sides of humanity ). The villain gave me nightmares, as an adult I understand why, there are many Frollos in the world.
Frollo is one of those Disney Villains who gets even more terrifying the older you get. Much like Ursula, he doesn't have a sympathetic backstory, he's simply evil.
right?! and i think that’s why he is a top tier villian. not all villians should have a motive. it’s ok to simply just be evil
His "motive" is just plain racism/xenophobia
Literally! You're so right. Hes the kind of real life villain too many of us have had run ins with
@@Chuuzusand because he’s so real. There are so many Frollos in history, his evil is plausible
But what makes frollo scarier is that he's real
"He's not ug-
...I bet he's very nice!"
lmao
It's honestly scary that there are people IRL who are like Frollo.
omg THEE Rukiya!!
Hey Rukiya!!!
I got a bunch of Frollos in my senate right now
I think the main difference of Disney music before vs now is that its no longer like a musical and more like separate pop song music videos. It feels like they just want to make something sound catchy rather than strengthen the story and connect it to the character🙃
You know you can do both right. There are still good modern disney songs
@@miraeshin8652eh I don't completely agree
@@tobsonasanya4765 that's ok
except Encanto. it still has a theatrical musical feel, but more modern in style
RIP.
Hell Fire is such a bop! i don’t think any villian will top that. thank you for your support 🙏🏿🙏🏿🫂
The thing is, among the three men, to Frollo, she was an object, to Quasimodo, she was a goddess/idea (in large part because she was the only woman who ever talked to him/showed him interest), but to Phoebus, she was just a woman, an equal person, which is what she needed most.
Me too.
Tony Jay earned his immortality through animated films like this and all his other various roles before his passing. May he Rest in Power.
I think Hellfire is the best Disney villain song of all time. It wasn't as popular as the others at the time but it has more weight to it.
I think this is the darkest Disney movie because there’s no magic it’s very real. If this was made as a typical Disney movie the hunch back would have a fairy 🧚♀️ god mother that fixes everything, makes him the most handsome in the land and he gets Esmeralda at the end
exactly! and let’s not forget how there are bare politicians like this in real life
@@Chuuzusexactly
You're right. I think if it hadn't been for the gargoyles Disney might not have let this one out. if you remove them from the film, there's almost no levity.
@@Kellyeeeee They made a musical version of this movie and there, the Gargoyles are 'replaced' by all the statues of Notre Dame who work as a greek chorus. In my opinion I kind of wish they had let it been ambiguos if the gargoyles were alive or not, since I can _absolutely_ see Quasi making them up because he has no one to friggin talk to. The end of the "A guy like you" scene even suggests this, showing that the real objects are much less impressive than the fantastic world of Quasimodos imagination, but the fact that they have tangible effects on the battle at the end leads you to the conclusion that they actually _are_ real, which I wish they weren't, just Quasis way of coping with the pure loneliness
Also in the musical they reiintroduced the bookoriginal plotpoint that Quasimodo is nearly deaf from the bells. Whenever he speaks it is with a lisp and he speaks very little, but when he sings, they make it out to be his _inner_ voice, his true thoughts and thus he sing beautifully, because that is what his soul is.
@@Chuuzusnot just politicians either, basically anyone with a sense of control or authority over someone else can be like this.
Frollo was such a terrifying villain because he's obsessed with whats right and wrong and he blames Esmerelda for his own desire and its like girl all the woman did was exist, fight your own demons and stop attacking people.
That what happens when you think your perfect, you blame other people for your problems
The other thing about him is that there are many moments where he is given a chance to let it go and or self reflect
But he chooses his obsession and purity each time until it drives him mad and eventually destroys himself.
i’m glad she ended up with phoebus, cause frollo saw her as a demon, quazimodo saw her as an angel, and phoebus saw her as a person.
she was either demonized or too glorified, and phoebus just saw esmeralda for the woman she is.
and quazimodo did technically get what he wanted in the end, which was to just be accepted
Great explanation!
The part that really blows me away is that the writers understood that two and half decades ago. It’s a surprisingly level of emotional intelligence/mental health awareness for the time period.
Unfortunately the novel had a completely different, depressing ending.
I'm sorry you had to go through that, but I'm glad your parents got you out of there before you were seriously hurt.
Your comment made me tear up, I'm so sorry you had to live through that! Your parents made the right decision 🫶🏼
I'm so sorry you went through that, but I am so glad you guys got out of there.
Chuzus and “you better sing” 🫱🏽🫲🏼 😂
😭😭♥️
so loveable haha
judge frollo really is the incel king bc what do you mean “sleep with me or BURN”? 💀 i had no business watching this as a child 💀💀
"SILENCE--- JUSTICE!" what an iconic part of the movie..
Yeah people tend to miss that "out there" and "Heavens Light/Hellfire" are duets
That shows the character and motivations of the two main characters
Frollo and Quasimodo,
Whether it be the dark cynical and immoral purity of Frollo
Or the hopeful and inquisitive nature of Quasimodo...
Froyo is even creepier in the novel because in the novel Esmeralda is 16 🤢but in the animation she’s in her early 20s but froyo is still creepy 😬
It's still creepy no matter what age she is because Frollo clearly has a sick twisted lust for her which no teenage girls or women should have to deal with but unfortunately a lot of creepy men do this. 🙄
"froyo" lmao perfect
16:27 sick 😷
@@Firespawnable 16:31 he’s disgusting 🤮
I remember reading a book version (I don't remember which one because there's quite a few adaptations) and there was a scene where he tortured Esmeralda, then climbed on top of her and started kissing her x.x yuck!!!
Frollo, Mother Gothel, and Ursula are top tier Disney villains imo.
Frollo’s easily the most evil of all them, but in a very dark realistic way.
Scar says hello, Jafar too.
True Mother Gothel was a top tier gaslighter, really disturbing
Don't forget Malificent the petty Queen lol XD
Lady Tremaine fits in with realistic dark Disney villains. She had zero magic, but she emotionally and financially abused Cinderella for years, and felt zero remorse for it. Her spoiled brat daughters were almost just as toxic.
I think Gaston is up there too because it represents a primitive way of thinking as well as holding the charisma to rally a mob through fear. He's just a really good-looking competent hunter.
Esmeralda is so ✨️MOTHER✨️ she should have been an official Disney Princess.
Esmeralda isn't a princess, she's the Queen of the Outcasts 👑
@@goldenhourg Yaaaasss. But still, she deserves to be on the list of disney princesses, tho.
@@anzelle_taylors_version At one point, she was part of the Disney princess lineup from roughly 1996-1998. But they took her out eventually. She is one of my favorite Disney characters.
@Vanipollonia1 They need a line up for female heroines who aren't princesses.
Like Woodstock '99
That intro with the choir still gives me goosebumps ever since I was a kid!
Hands down the most powerful intro from any Disney movie i’ve ever seen
Me too.
Esmeralda's face card never declines. This movie is a guaranteed tear jerker & the music is so powerful
The scariest thing about Frollo as a villain there actually people just like him in real life.
This movie was one of my favorites as a child 🩵 I always cried hearing Esmeralda sing, “God Save the Outcasts”-such a beautiful song
YES we still got Hunchback of Notre Dame, can't wait to see your reactions
💃🏾♥️♥️
But it's not about her beauty or her talent because most average women have experienced a man lusting after them and creepy behavior. 🙄
Very true :( there have been countless times where men threaten violence on women they like if she rejects him, really scary.
So 11 Fun Facts about the original story (SPOILERS):
Damn. That’s dark.
Weren't Esmeralda and Quasimodo switched at birth?
@@Awatchamacallit Yes, they were. Well, not "at birth" so much as many months into their infancy and it was obvious that they were different babies bc Esmeralda was very pretty even as a baby and Quasimodo still had his looks then. If we take Sister Gudule's word that Romani kidnapped Esmeralda, then Quasimodo, who they left behind, was of Romani descent.
So basically the romanis did the change?
"Who is the monster and who is the man?" Umph.

literally screamed when I saw this on my notifications!
I'm conflicted, it's fuck Frollo till this day but"Hellfire" is icon status I fear 😮💨😂

Yeah the novel is a big yikes on the ending that's for sure

"is the righteous man in the room with us?" LMFAAOOO
How poetic.
Well said

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is so underrated. I vividly remember scenes eventhough i watched it as a child.

If you loved the music from this you will absolutely love the Prince of Egypt because the music EAATTSSS. Especially the Plague WHEW
Treasure planet is also INSANELY underrated
"Is the righteous man in the room with us?" at the start of Frollo's song, was just /perfect/ :D
This movie is a masterpiece, I’m so glad you watched it for the first time as an adult bc it’s definitely more appreciated for an older audience
Even as a kid I felt drawn to this movie. I love Esmeralda's God Help the Outcast and Hellfire is my all time favorite Disney villain song.
You’re going to LOVE Prince of Egypt! It’s the best with the best animation and songs!
I can already tell THIS will be one of your reactions I continuously come back to as a comfort watch.
Loved everything about this and sooo glad you enjoyed this.
You are going to fall in love with the “prince of Egypt” though lol the music in that, the story….. ughh it’s just perfection!
WHAT????? I love this movie! Thank you so much Chu! 🥰
Esméralda is the rare Romani representation in Western media.
The term is actually Romani :) Romanian ppl are those from Romania, a European country-whereas Romani or Roma people are Esmerelda’s ethnic group and they originally come from northern India 🇮🇳
@@XxxMuseluverxxX Thank you. I'll change it
Esmerelda is my favorite Disney princess; what a wonderful, exemplary soul. And I have never been able to get through her song without crying. And, as you said, the animation is unforgettable. I love the "Sanctuary!!" moment.
But a "children's movie"? I will never be old enough to watch it. 😱🥺
(Loved how you edited in that clip of Brenda at 31:30! That's one of the funniest scenes I've ever seen.)😂😂
Frollos song goes hard. I was shook as a kid because of how good and scary it was.
It's this, 'Be Prepared,' and 'Poor Unfortunate Souls.'
Disney/Pixar movies are cute and all, but nothing is eating like these animations.
Love your réaction ❤
Ps: you can cry all you want it what’s make you even more special because you show your true feelings and that’s priceless and special ❤
The musical adaptation is EXCELLENT!!! Esmerelda is such an iconic song I highly recommend listening to it. It's on the same level of Hellfire!
I love how you appreciated this movie and all the details. Makes me happy when the reaction videos are genuine and just so tuned in
"he's not ug- ... i bet he's very nice!" the way i spit out my drink
