    Fun reaction - I adore this movie. It bugs me when people say it's "Stockholm Syndrome" bc that would be if Belle changed/lowered her standards and accepted him as the rude ragemonster, changing herself to fit him. No, in this movie, she held onto her standards, and he had to change to live up to them. That's the opposite.

      Beauty and the Beast:
      Beast releases Maurice with the promise that Belle stays with him. He has to save her life, learn some manners, and do nice things for her unprovoked before she starts to warm up to him. He also at one point lets her go with no prospect of her returning.
      Actual Stockholm Syndrome:
      Captor keeps his victim by force, and demands that he/she appeases the captor, and the captor rewards good behavior if he/she feels like it.
      TWO VERY DIFFERENT THINGS!!!

    I think there’s a huge misconception about the rose. People think that when they say the rose blooms until the Beast’s 21st birthday, that it immediately wilts post that time. That isn’t the case. The rose STARTS to wilt upon the 21st birthday, meaning that it could be wilting for years before the last petal falls. So it’s very likely the Beast was older than 11 when he was cursed.

    • @domidium
      @domidium 2 ปีที่แล้ว +69

      Except that Lumiere says in Be our Guest that "ten years we've been rusting..." And if the rose is supposed to bloom until his twenty first year, that would solidly put him at eleven when he was cursed. And, Lumiere also said "but the rose has already begun to wilt" as if it was a new thing.

      @@hummus_exual My thinking was that, since the servants were turned into inanimate objects, time was "frozen" for THEM. But, since the curse was primarily meant for the Beast (Prince Adam), he aged normally.

    • @rachelmcdonald7296

      I always interpreted it as his 21st year of being a beast. That in the beginning he was hopeful about the curse bring broken, but after ten years he fell in despair and isolated himself and therefore the servants didn't really anything hence ten years we've been rusting. This goes alone with them not aging.

    To answer your question,
    The prince was twenty one when he was cursed. He was then a beast for twenty one years. So technically he’s 41 to 42 for the story, but his human form was paused while he was cursed so essentially he’s only 21.
    As a side note, Lumier says that they haven’t entertained for ten years. And the beast thinks Maurice came to gawk at him. So who was it that came to the castle ten years prior, enjoyed a feast, gawked at the beast, and ran away? Considering Gaston led the townspeople right to the castle, I think it’s safe to say it was him.

    • @tararocksong5085

  • @SummersMovingBookshelf
    @SummersMovingBookshelf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    To answer the “how old was he” thing, the stained-glass at the beginning clearly shows that the prince was at least 16 or so. If the rose blooms until his 21st year and starts to wilt then, that means it bloomed for 5 years, and to me, it makes sense that the wilting process would take just as long. 5 years of blooming+5 years of wilting=10 years.
    Another explanation is that Lumiere was exaggerating and that it’s only been 3-5 years. Since Lumiere has a flair for the dramatic, I wouldn’t doubt this at all.

    • @rebeccavaughn8897
      @rebeccavaughn8897 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He was 21 when he was cursed. The rose bloomed for 21 years, so he was a beast for 21 years, and his human self paused. When the curse was lifted, he was transformed back into his 21 year old self. Technically he’s 42 but essentially he’s just 21.

      In regards to the discrepancy between the picture and Luminere's song, I was listening to a podcast with the director of the movie that explains it. Ashman, the lyrcist of the movie, wanted him to be a child when cursed because that's how it is in the classic french tale. The director wanted him to be a teenager, 16-18. Otherwise, it would make the enchantress seem cruel. Apparently they never came to an agreement. The aforementioned discrepancy was a result of this.

    6:03 Back in the day? It's 2D animation. It doesn't matter that it was "back in the day." Just because things are 3d nowadays doesn't automatically make them better. I WISH we still had 2D animation in movies like this, but, Toy Story kinda killed it.

    tbh i think it's fitting that the beast's human form isn't the most gorgeous ever. this probably wasn't intended, since story-wise beast was meant to be very handsome and that contributed to his bad attitude and ego pre curse. but it actually fits better with the theme of the story that he isn't _that_ handsome. it's perfect that he turned out to be a nice-looking but mostly average guy, bc belle doesn't care either way. it was never his appearance that she fell for in the first place, that won't change now that he's human.
    but yeah, the live action was good, but it can't hold a candle to the animated! belle and her dress are too iconic, and the songs are truly magical.

    The book Belle was reading was actually an easter egg for Aladdin. "Far off places," fictional kingdom of Agrabah. "Daring sword fights," all the sword fighting references in the movie. "A prince in disguise." Aladdin disguised himself as a prince.

    The Beast (Prince Adam) was the first Disney prince who had negative traits; before, the princes were kind and heroic. After him, there were several Disney Princes who were selfish and/or arrogant (John Smith, Naveen, and Flynn Rider), though we did still have kind ones (Aladdin, Shang).

    Omg this is a classic! I did some of their songs in my middle school Cabaret years and years ago. I have a sinking suspicion since you hadn’t seen this movie, that you haven’t seen, what I consider, the best Disney princess movie Anastasia. Not actually a Disney princess, but they bought the rights of the movie after it was a success, so technically was inducted into the list later on. It’s darker than average Disney since it wasn’t originally released by them, but I’d highly recommend you do it one of these days.

    You asked how long it had been since the Beast was transformed and in Be Our Guest Lumiere says “For ten years we’ve been rusting” and since the rose still has some petals that means that the Beast was ten when the Enchantress changed him into a Beast.

    In regards to the discrepancy between rhe picture and Luminere's song, I was listening to a podcast with the director of the movie that explains it.

    • @NoelleMar
      @NoelleMar 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Makes sense since it is a fairy tale after all, one that has many different versions.
      Punishing a spoiled 10 year old on the one hand explains why the beast is in arrested development. On the other hand, it also weakens the message of learning a lesson lol since it really was just a spoiled rich kid, which would be 100% expected for a prince. I prefer that version, but now I wonder if that was supposed to be bad luck in the first place or just an example of telling kids they need to be perfect or else.

    Philip was able to find the father because of his sense of smell, the scent trail was still fresh since it hasn't been even a full day yet since he left, also, I have a theory about the spell, it turns the prince into a beast but, it also turns the servants into objects depending on they're role in the castle or they're personality, for example, the maids became feather dusters, the kitchen staff became silverware/cooking utensils, the chef became a stove, and so on so forth and lastly the wolves were possibly the hunters for the castle that would provide the food for the castle

    The devolution of Gaston is interesting. While he's never a sympathetic character, in the first half he's little more than a stupid jerk, more funny than frightening, almost in the 'lovable goof' category. In the second act, obsessed with his rejection of Belle, he becomes more dangerous and frightening, and, especially, more an active agent, preparing to have Maurice put away, leading the anthem to hatred, 'Kill the Beast', and ultimately stabbing said Beast in the back in an act of bestiality and cowardice. As the Beast becomes more human, Gaston becomes more the beast (as, of course, the script tells us explicitly). I wonder how the actors for Gaston in the stage productions approach it. In the first act, they want Gaston to get laughs; in the second act, they want the audience to cheer at his demise (in the film, I think, Le Fou abandons this Gaston). This might not be easy, especially for less experienced actors, e.g., in high school productions.
