I've always wondered about the "buzzsaw" sound. It's only heard inside the plane, not outside when a plane flys over. Are we hearing a vibration or an effect from some kind of noise reduction insulation?
In the beginning we had problems keeping them on wing for 250 hours. Rolls could not keep up with parts and improvements. We had L1011s with "Solid State Engines" parked at LAX and MCI for months. By solid state I mean engines robbed and chained to cement block weights. The engines were improved it took a few years. The RB was never as bad as the CF6s. The CF6 was always spilling its guts.
The L-1011. That was one beautiful piece of work. The sound of the Rolls-Royce engines were amazing. Sometimes I wonder if progress is all it's cracked up to be.
The one and only time I ever flew on an L-1011 was in 1993 from Atlanta to Amsterdam and I must say I have never felt the same smoothness again, with the exception of the B747.
L-1011 has a perfect saftey record (beside the microburst and pilot errors). The MD-11 & DC-10 had numerous issues. I would love to fly on one of these
So blessed to have flown on this plane dozens of times. It has taken me to some of the most special places & to visit the most important people to me. Love the Tristar. Even a 757-200 w/ the RB211’s is a treat.
There was also the Saudia fire on an L-1011. But, the L-1011 did have the best safety record of the first-generation widebodies (DC-10, 747, L-1011, Airbus A300). It’s definitely an engineer’s airplane. The DC-10, by contrast, was a businessman’s airplane.
This aircraft made me love airplanes... There were a lot more domestic wide bodies in the 80's and 90's but most of them retired in the early 2000's. I remember walking onto this jet for the first time in the late 80's and I felt like I was in an auditorium it was so big. I even remember liking it more than the DC-10's I flew on. I think it's easily the most beautiful, most well designed passenger aircraft in history and I wish Lockheed would take another stab at it -- putting both Boeing and Airbus in their place, again...
I share your story. First plane I ever flew in and also late 80's. Except mine was on TAP Portuguese airlines. It had Rolls Royce engines and made me fall in love with aviation. Still love they way the intake is sculpted in the tail engine.
The only reason I found this video is because I was reading the Skunk Works book and the author has mention this aircraft. He said that Lockeed almost went bankrupt because Rolls-Royce went bankrupt and left them with 20 planes with no engine.
The L1011 sold so few that it cost Lockheed almost $1billion in losses due to not enough sales to make it profitable. Twin jets are the bread and butter now. But I agree that it is an awesome aircraft. I wish there was one flying that has brand new, comfortable seats with entertainment, etc.
I had the privilege and honor of flying in a L-1011 in 1998 from Toronto Canada to Athens Greece onboard Air Transat... Probably my most memorable flight... That sounds and that awesome cruising speed! ... I've done that flight countless times and that L1011 still holds the record at 8 hours 54 minutes. The L1011 symbolized the golden era of flying, when flying held a certain prestige when every seat was cushioned for total comfort and had an ashtray and the airline food was actually good, because we lived in better times.... Seems like planes are getting slower and alot more uncomfortable with these transit bus style seats, all they care about is profits. Make the seats smaller, less leg room, jam as many seats into an aircraft as possible, charge an arm and a leg for baggage, serve disgusting barely eatable food, charge extra for drinks and then fly slow... There was a time people hoped their flights were longer because they enjoyed being on the plane... Now people can't wait to get off the plane.... How sad.
My grandpa flew for Eastern in the 70s and 80s and this was his favorite plane to fly. I never got tired of hearing his stories about it. Rest In Peace Captain Mike, I can only imagine that God flew him up to heaven in one of these
One of the most comfortable flights ever, from Calgary to Toronto September 9th 1973 in an L1011. Unforgettably smooth and quiet, lots of room and excellent Air Canada service.
My dad flew these for 10 years for Delta from 1986-1996 at the end of his career. Closing my eyes and turning up there volume brings back such great memories of riding on this glorious machine. There is nothing today that remotely captures the Aura that the L-1011 had.
After hearing the RB211 engines on this plane, I'm absolutely certain I was aboard wither an L-1011 or 757 when I was a very young child. Hearing it again sent chills up my spine. You don't forget that sound.
Now that you mention the 757, back in 2018 I flew in a Delta 757 from ATL to SNA and noticed that the takeoff sounded quite different from any other plane; at the time it was almost deafening. Crazy to think that it's the same engine that is on the L1011.
LOVE IT! LOVE IT! Brings back memories. When I lived in Hawaii (84-90) I flew on Delta a lot and it was generally Honolulu - Atlanta and it was on an L1011 most ot the time.
Very under-rated aircraft in its' day, and quite a machine to fly on. Smooth ride, tight handling according to those who flew it, very safe, and plenty sexy too with the RR engine whine, good looks, performance, sound of the center engine in the tail, and even the hydraulic flap noises. I flew on several of these with DL, a few with EA, and once on TW. Favorite flight was in 1/96 from SFO to ATL, upon moving back east. Sign of better things to come, that takeoff remains etched in my mind.
+Sci-fi Geek 123 (deal with it! XD) we had a Delta L-1011 (formally Eastern Airlines) out at mohave CA (boneyard) this aircraft was rumored to be hunted.. the story was it had some parts installed on it from the Eastern Airline L-1011 that crashed.. i worked inside many retired L-1011's and this one was different...I had been this thing for a couple days before anyone told me anything.. the cabin was cooler and strange sounds and weird feelings.. later found out is was haunted... idk what the deal was but it was odd.
I twice sat in that thing in 1994. From JFK to LAX and 3 weeks later from LAX to KTL. I loved those flights! The engine sound is amazing. I still remember that my father said: "Stop wasting our Hi8 cassettes and camera battery!!!!" But I had to film the takeoff and landing.
I remember that view many times in my childhood. We always flew on Delta L-1011's from LAX to ATL. God those were great times. Aviation is freaking amazing!
Amazing sound! Lockheed has been making jet aircrafts with amazing sounding turbofans including this one, the Lockheed L-1011 Tristar family, & the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy family.
I took an L-1011 from Atlanta to Denver back maybe around '78. I think it was with Eastern. I do remember this trip was such a great flight. I regret it was my only L1011 experience.
I remember this jet as a kid, the sound of the rolls royce engines were so distinctive on takeoff!!! I could here it climbing over the treetops and would get goose bumps, I sure miss that plane!
I haven't heard that sound in a very long time. I've flown on these old Delta flights before and it was awesome. I still even remember my first 747 ride from Los Angeles to Hawaii in the late 80s.
As a kid we regularly took a Delta L-1011 on an 80 mile hop from Hartford to Boston before proceeding on to Bermuda. Crazy they would do that short hop with a widebody. That Rolls Royce engine sound send chills up my spine
Got to fly on one way back when...it was surreal. The power, the smoothness, the quality feel, and comfort were top notch. Such a magnificent machine that was loved by crew and passengers alike.
My uncle was an engineer for British Airways and when I was about 5 he let our family see the hangers at LHR and I got to look inside a BA L1011 and stand in the engine by the fan blades of an RB211. I have always liked the Tristar ever since.
Dad worked and retired from Delta. This aircraft was so smooth. We flew on this so many times in the 80s from Newark to Orlando and the Stretch 8 (DC 8) in the late 70s and early 80s. L1011 will always be part of my childhood. I even took one over seas via Tower Air when I deployed.
Thank you for sharing this video. My pulse quickens when I hear the sounds of those classic engines. While today's airliners are safer and more efficient, I miss those classic jets from the old days. They had so much more style and character.
This suddenly brought back another memory: flying from Korea to Hong Kong on a Cathay Pacific L1011. I remember it because it had bare metal engine cowlings with the Rolls Royce logo stamped on them. Beautiful.
This was one of the coolest aspects of flying in the 80s-90s (for me it was the 90s). You never knew what you were gonna get. One time I ended up on a DC-10 for a short hop from Boston to Detroit. We flew on a Delta L-1011 on the way to Disney when I was still practically a toddler. Another time, it was a 767 from Boston to Atlanta. More often you’d be in a 737-200 or some species of DC-9…but wide bodies were much more common so you’d occasionally wind up on something huge and completely unexpected.
Probably the best sounding jet engine ever made. The first flight i ever took (that i remember) was in a L1011 from Kansas City to LA. I sat just in front of the wing and was mesmerized by the engine the entire flight. I fell in love that day... Rolls-Royce made a fan for life.
Lockheed Tristar L1011 hands down. Lot of fond memories non-reving out JFK late at night, city lights below and the feel/hear of those winding RR engines. Or the Delta runs from LA to Hawaii. Good times 80's & 90's. My fav jet of all time. Legendary..... Pure beauty.... that's was the heyday of Commercial Aviation.
This totally reminds me of my first flight on a Tri-Star when I was about 8 years old. I was seated in just about the same spot as this video and I remember how surprised I was at the sound of the engines. I wasn't expecting that buzz saw sound to be so loud in the cabin. It almost scared me a little. Nice video.
I just loved this aircraft! My dad worked for Northwest Orient, so we flew a lot. The L1011 was, for me, far more comfy and stable than the DC-10, which I hated. Like a Cadillac to a Chevy. Too bad these old girls are retired.
Happy day. I used to work for Delta's cargo GSA in the UK 1992 - 1998 and we got the all time cargo load record of general freight LGW-ATL 22,000kgs. I still have the load sheet somewhere. Unmistakeable engine note on takeoff. HAppy memories
Never got to fly on one of the Tristar L-1011, had friend who was a long time TWA employee, he said the entire L-1011 rattled like crazy on take-off and landing, but can't verify that...
Verified... It's true! See my comment above. You are the only one to mention it in this sea of praise... The whole plane shook when they fired it up, like the engines were out of balance or something.
American Trans Air Got me home on one of these. From Riyadh to Norfolk Va. Spent many Hours on the L1011 also from Atl to LAX. Lockheed need to bring it back to modern expectations.
I had the pleasure of flying on the L-1011 only once in my life (Delta, ATL to LAX) in 2000. What a beautiful aircraft! I just wish I had more opportunities to fly on her...
This is cool, I flew from Manchester England to Atlanta Georgia US on schedule flights with Delta airlines between 1995 and 1996. The ones I went on were Delta's finest 1984 production. The engines were Rolls Royce RB211. The Tristar bankrupted RR and nearly Lockheed !
This Aircraft was ahead of its time, much better than the DC-10, I love this video like most here due to the sound of the RB211 I worked on this AC in my youth College years when being cabin Crew was trully fun. I am happy I had that opportunity aboard an AC like this.
Lovely looking aircraft.Sadly one crashed in the Florida everglades in Dec 72.Parts retrieved from crash site used on other L-1011's were removed later due to ghost sightings.A book and movie later "The ghosts of Flight 102".No further accidents ever.Fascinating story.
I remember being evacuated out of the west indies on a fully loaded BWIA L1011-500 back in the early 90s before Hurricane Luis hit. It was a hell of a departure with one ambandoned takeoff before we finally got in the air. Hell of an aircraft the l1011!
I remember flying on one of these beauties sometime in the mid 90's... I was only 7 or 8 years old at the time but I distinctly remember being excited because I had finally got to fly in a L-1011. I remember my dad being particularly excited about the flight on the L-1011 too. It's a shame that I wasn't older when I was on it so I could remember the experience better today now that I'm 26. All I can say is that I feel lucky to have flown on an L-1011 before they were taken out of service.
loved the L 1011...I am 34 and used to fly on them back in the 80's from SJC (san jose ca) to ORD (chicago)...sturdiest airplane and I loved the whine of the engines....this year I flew the A-321 to chicago and the MD90 back to Atl.....they do not compare to the L-1011!!!
You are correct. There was more interest in the L1011 before the production delays. Many customers who eventually operated the DC-10 instead said they would have bought the Tri-Star had it been available on time.
My dad worked at Lockheed on the L-1011 program as a test flight instrumentation engineer. That CATIII auto-land was some piece of electronics. Got to tour his plane (Dash 3) in Palmdale once. I also would purposely fly it between LAX and SAN on Friday nights ($19 one way). I finally got a LAX to ATL trip in early 80s on one. I was always very proud of what my did and thought those planes were awesome.
I loved the Tristar too, It just looked right. Flew in several from London to Paris in the 1970s and then from Frankfurt to San Francisco in 1993. In contrast to the DC10, it was clear that the thrid engine was not an afterthought. And a Rolls-Royce, too :0).
I miss the trijets. Used to fly Delta L-1011s from FRA to Atlanta with some frequency back in the 1980s. Just hated the way you never got the smell of kerosene out of your nostrils, but what nostalgia! Thanks.
This was a full flight. I live in FLL and flew the tristar many times to ATL and DFW. I lived in the FLL flight path and you never had to look up to know when she departing overhead due to the unmistakable hum of the old RR engines. What a beauty
I was on a dead head flight in an L-1011 once. There were only 25 people on board including crew.(very light) The pilot went to the active runway and held the brakes and gave it FULL throttle! I bet we didn't use 2000' of runway! Greatest G Force I've ever experienced!
Brilliant, brings back memories of my first flying days, back as young as 18 months in 1989. Still get to see the L1011 occasionally flying into RAF Brize Norton. Still Delta however had the best livery for the L1011
It's astonishing reading all these comments with everyone sharing their memory of that incredible sound from the Rolls Royce jet engines. Once you hear it you can never forget it!
Such a great airplane.......my personal favorite of the jetliners. Such character and beauty to the design and there seems to be a nearly unanimous consent on the approval from pilots who have flown these. Great RB211 sound!
0:27...that deep wooooo sound, then the spool up and finally the "buzzsaw" . There's nothing else like it.
Exactly right...what a sound and experience that was ...great choice of words ...
I've always wondered about the "buzzsaw" sound. It's only heard inside the plane, not outside when a plane flys over.
Are we hearing a vibration or an effect from some kind of noise reduction insulation?
@@edkretchmer2167 you can heard the buzzsaw outside but only if the engines are facing you
@@wsx2000lolThanks-- I did not know that. I have not spent a lot of time facing jet engines :).
Sounds like a lot of money made of titanium and steel spinning at 20,000 RPM. :)
that engine sound is just incredible
Those Rolls Royce engines!
The spool up is one of the best sounds of any jet engine. RR RB211 is an excellent engine.
Of course it is, it's Rolls Royce
Even the BA 747s sounded this great before then
Them RR engines though.... sound so beautiful.
GE90s tho haha
No? Thats an RB211. You can tell by that beautiful roar.
VGM Mania! No, I ment the GE90s are way better
VGM Mania! Those massive sexy efficient, loud, buzzsaw GE90s ahhh
I really hope you are joking. The GE90s are only built for the 777 and as you can clearly see here, this aircraft is not a 777.
That engine note is in perfect harmony with itself, sounds like a freaking choir and I love it. Nothing will ever beat the sound this plane made
10 times better than a microwave
I would love to fly on one of these
I would just giveup everything just to fly one of those 3 nowdays
So blessed to have flown on this plane dozens of times. It has taken me to some of the most special places & to visit the most important people to me. Love the Tristar. Even a 757-200 w/ the RB211’s is a treat.
I flew an ATA L1011 to Frankfurt from Detroit non stop in 1989. Very cool plane.
except that time people saw a person vanish on that air craft
There was also the Saudia fire on an L-1011. But, the L-1011 did have the best safety record of the first-generation widebodies (DC-10, 747, L-1011, Airbus A300). It’s definitely an engineer’s airplane. The DC-10, by contrast, was a businessman’s airplane.

I logged so many miles on Delta TriStars, I can still remember every single engine pitch sound.
My miles were mostly on TWA L-1011s but I know what you mean!
Indeed, the L-1011 WAS glorious! My favorite aircraft of all time.
BradRoss63 Mine as well !!! just a beautiful airliner. The DC-10 was BUILT but the L-1011 was CRAFTED!!!
it was..... Definitely ahead of it's time...

@@pcguy619 Since you mentioned Delta 757's, those would have been the great PW2000's from Pratt & Whitney you were listening to.
Also think the engine sound at takeoff power sounds like a Delta 757. An intense sound that really adds to takeoff!
Delta 1011 was the very first jumbo I flew back in the early 90s. It was massive.
RB211, one of the best sounding jetliner engines ever made.

Happy day. I used to work for Delta's cargo GSA in the UK 1992 - 1998 and we got the all time cargo load record of general freight LGW-ATL 22,000kgs. I still have the load sheet somewhere. Unmistakeable engine note on takeoff. HAppy memories
The engines sound so cool
Thanks for posting this video. The L-1011 was leaps and bounds ahead of its competition.
This is possibly the best video ever posted on youtube. Damn, I miss these.
So thrilled to see the DLC (Direct Lift Control) in action during the approach. What a magnificent bird! Way ahead of its time…
My First flight ever was on a Delta L-10 11.1976 to Ft.Lauderdale in a snow storm.I was 11.I miss those days.
Not just technological marvel but one of the most beautiful commercial airliners ever made.
Lockheed doesn't exist any more.
I had the pleasure of flying on the L-1011 only once in my life (Delta, ATL to LAX) in 2000. What a beautiful aircraft! I just wish I had more opportunities to fly on her...
This is cool,
I flew from Manchester England to Atlanta Georgia US on schedule flights with Delta airlines between 1995 and 1996.
Brings back such good memories... thank you Caio! The L-1011 is my very favorite aircraft...
I remember flying on one of these beauties sometime in the mid 90's... I was only 7 or 8 years old at the time but I distinctly remember being excited because I had finally got to fly in a
Great Airplane… Used to work for TWA and remember flying to Tel Aviv on those birds from Madrid… was a great plane.
One of the greatest passenger planes ever built. It was a work horse for so many airlines.
Always loved the sound of those engines. This vid brings back lovely memories of flying on this jet (also Delta).
You are correct. There was more interest in the L1011 before the production delays.
Many customers who eventually operated the DC-10 instead said they would have bought the Tri-Star had it been available on time.
My dad spent almost his entire career at Delta working on that engine.
was he a part of rolls royce?
@@NegevLord he was a mechanic at Delta.
@@davidmartin6721 man that mustve been amazing, hearing the engine starting up all the time
My dad worked at Lockheed on the L-1011 program as a test flight instrumentation engineer.
Great Video with real engines audio. I loved it to hear the airplane´s sound. Thanks for share the video
Something about hearing that sound when you are flying is comforting. That is music I can sleep to.
Loved flying the Delta Tristar, smooth and safe.
I loved the Tristar too, It just looked right. Flew in several from London to Paris in the 1970s and then from Frankfurt to San Francisco in 1993. In contrast to the DC10, it was clear that the thrid engine was not an afterthought. And a Rolls-Royce, too :0).
God I love this video. I'm a kid again. I will always remember how excited I was traveling on a Delta L-1011
That noise at full thrust sends a shiver down my spine. Beautiful.
I FLEW THE tRISTAR only twice !! it was in 1981, TWA NY \ LA. THAT YEAR WAS MY 1ST EXPERIENCE ON A WIDE BODY JET- AND MY ONLY ONE ON A L-1011
First time I had ever flown was in a L1011 to Orlando. Great flight!
I was on a dead head flight in an L-1011 once.
There were only 25 people on board including crew.(very light)
The pilot went to the active runway and held the brakes and gave it FULL throttle!
I bet we didn't use 2000' of runway!
Greatest G Force I've ever experienced!
Brilliant, brings back memories of my first flying days, back as young as 18 months in 1989. Still get to see the L1011 occasionally flying into RAF Brize Norton. Still Delta however had the best livery for the L1011
my favorite trijet of all times!! . I flew 2 times in it from SJU - ATL and ATL - SJU. they were amazing!
I was fortunate enough to fly on a Delta Airlines L-1011 from Atlanta to Paris, and then back to Atlanta. Extremely roomy and comfortable!
flew on l1011s while working for lockheed in the middle east will always be my favorite widebody
Usually, I live in the present. But not while watching this.
I flew on one back in July 15, 1980 Eastern Airlines JFK to San Juan P.R. Good ride. Roomy. Miss them. I wish they would bring them back.
Ah, the glorious vibrating sound of the Lockheed TriStar buzz. Music to my ears :D.
Excellent video, the TriStar was one fantastic plane!
Ah..... the glorious sound of the Rolls Royce RB211... that wonderful growl. Just music!
