  • In my years of teaching different kinds of students ages 2-55 years old, I realize that it is not the student’s job to adjust to you and your preference. It’s the other way around, you, the teacher, must adapt to different personalities and situations. For this video commentary, I will be sharing with you how to effectively teach RUDE and BORED teenagers. #ESLtips #Acadsoc #TeachaKaren

    Teacher I also experience a rude 7 year old student, the worst part is she called me "You're ugly"🤣 what I did I typed "Teacher is beautiful" and let her read it. She rolled her eyes🤣

      Hahaha that's the right attitude! One of my students told me, he wanted to kill me and I played dead HAHAH. We have to lighten up and stop taking things seriously. Just make fun of them in a subtle way LoL

    when she said "love you" i guess it was genuine bc teenagers nowadays are kinda bossy or like know-it-all but it's natural and sometimes they don't realize they're being rude or they don't consider it as a rude thing. i think it would be easy for me to ignore that and not make it a big deal. i still like her for saying she loves you bc i guess u didn't reprimand her owo. nice job teach!

      Oh my! I think you're right. Actually, to be honest, I am very pikon and irritable (natural personality), iba iba siguro lang tayo ng rude threshold, ako mababaw hahahaha What was just irritating siguro was her facial expressions, too bad I couldn't show it for student privacy LOL. Thank you so much for commenting and good luck on your application, if you need help, I'm just a comment away 🥰♥️

    Great points here, Karen. And while I do think I have great self control, there is always that one student who will eventually get the best of me and I don't mind telling them what I think of them. If they are disrespectful then I will say so. We are not their doormats.

    I've learnt that questions such as these are quite useful:
    "I see a problem in this sentence. Do you see it?"
    "Why can't we use this verb?"
    "Would you like a link to practise [topic]?"
    I've found that this places the ball in the student's court. It also gets them thinking and analysing their work. STT can also be maximised in this way.

    Teacher karen u have been my inspiration to do good in class! I adapted most of your ideas hehe..
    I’m a noob. However I was startled with the different Aclassroom setup.. i wasnt able to use some of the tools like the T to text or i may say trying to find the tools like to upload pictures. I recently learned there were 3 types of Aclassroom.. hopefully you can make videos about those. Thanks much cher!

    • @TeachaKaren
      @TeachaKaren  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yes there are many types of Aclassroom but only 2 that I know of, the netless Aclassroom is a headached LOL sadly, I cannot make a tutorial because Acadsoc might fire me if I expose their tools too much :( What I suggest is to explore the tools, enter the classroom 3-5 minutes in advance to explore and practice how to use the tools. :)

    I saw this video suddenly, first I’m really sorry to hear that then I would like to introduce myself I’m a student of Acadsoc. Probably the majority of Chinese students are single kids so they don’t wanna accept others’ advices. Don’t take them seriously! Secondly probably they got a lot of pressure from both schools and parents. By the way you Kareen you are a professional teacher The students who are studying with you are very Lucy keep going

      I TOTALLY agree. It's like the longest class ever, the longest 25 minutes. You just want to get it over with and never see the student. Though, we just get used to it over time (but it doesn't mean it no longer upsets us LoL)

    Fake it till you make it. 😂 Ride kung ride. Ito yung pinakanatutunan ko sa first few years ng work sa ESL. Huwag magsuggest kung di ka tinatanong, huwag maging overcorrective and sensitive sa mistakes nila. Focus on big mistakes nalang at huwag magcocorrect kung di mo kayang iexplain.

    You must have been very confused at this rude and desrespecful behavior. You have wisdom how to handle this situation.... truly you are a nice person. I would have argued with them. I should learn from you how to endure.

      by nature, I am an argumentative person LOL but that only applies to my friends and my loved ones. Over time, I have developed the patience and the skill to remain calm under these difficult situations. Maybe this is a teacher's true test of professionalism and skill hihih

    Hello, Teacher Karen! I have a regular student and we have more than 200 classes together and I can see that He's so familiar with me and my actions. I always try to ask him relevant questions but sometimes I feel like he looks down on me and he tells me what to do and shows disinterest in the class. It hurts me because I think of him as a good boy and we also shared great moments together. I feel gloomy because of this. π^π I always try to brush it off. But I really can't hide the fact that I'm hurt. I always try to give him my support despite of all of this.

    • @TeachaKaren

      We are just humans teacha, it really is upsetting when our "babies" turn into bad babies. But it happens, that's why it's important that from the beginning, you have already shown a little parent-like authority. For example "Uh uh, when you need something from teacher, you say it nicely and you say please" .... things like those, so they know that even though you are not an authoritarian figure, you are to be respected.

    In China it's very common for them to say "I know, I know." It's usually they don't know how to express themselves well. Instead of saying I understand. Lol

  • @ASafePlacePH

    I've dealt with both European and Chinese students for about five years in the past and have handled Chinese students who also cut me off with endless "I knows" during sessions. One of my students explained to me that when they repeatedly say "I know", he means to say that he "understands". Oftentimes, it's the language barrier and misunderstandings that get in the way and as teachers, it's our job to understand them and show empathy regardless of how rude, bored, or aggressive they are in class. I have to admit though, I have confronted some students (lovingly) on their bad behavior in the past.

      Thanks for your input 🥰 I've also noticed that in my 1.5 years stay with this company. You're right! ♥️ In relation to the video, it was the student's facial expression, register and tone that I was able to subjectively say she's rude. Hehe

    • @TeachaKaren
      @TeachaKaren  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just a few, maybe about 10-12 classes in an 8 hour shift, I am being prioritized for Trial classes that's why I don't have much VIP (regular) classes :)

  • @TheNin0007
    @TheNin0007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I always empathize with the student. This is what I mean: Try to imagine the class from their point of view, and think - did the teacher (you) do something wrong? Was he/she impatient, rude, inconsiderate to you in any way? If the answer is no, then it's obvious this child has inner frustration and it has nothing to do with you!

    • @TeachaKaren
      @TeachaKaren  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I loooove this mindset! ♥️ This is a great tip to stay neutral when faced with challenging students. Too bad I have low EQ hahah 😂 I easily get irritated by rude students so I summon all my fake smiles and enthusiasm instead HAHA

    • @purplepuma123
      @purplepuma123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree.
      I wondered if the student may have been beating HERSELF up about it. Like “duh! I know, I know, I know. I’ve learnt this but here I am, still getting it wrong …”
      That said, I can see the teachers frustration about being spoken over. Especially if this student’s constantly cutting her off.

      Hello teach, I honestly don't review it anymore since I am familiar with the materials already. However, when I was starting out, I would review ALL the materials before I start my shift. This helped me become more confident to teach and to prepare ahead of time. I highly recommend you to do this on your first 1-2 months. It will help you feel more confident :)
